Kristen Stewart on diversity: ‘The industry is old so the perspective is quite narrow’

I had to rewrite/re-edit yesterday’s Kristen Stewart post several times before I published it. Kristen was/is at Sundance to promote her latest indie film, Certain Women, and she spoke to Variety about some of the issues facing Hollywood today. Variety released their video with the journalist’s question edited out, and then they made the headline for the story something like “Kristen Stewart says words about diversity.” As in, Variety put it out there that K-Stew was saying artists of color are complainers who just need to suck it up and write their own stuff and that the whole conversation is “boring.” Variety corrected that version hours later – Kristen was talking about the wage-inequality discussion, and how it’s boring to talk about how women in the industry get paid less than men and female-led stories are undervalued.

So, there you go. She was rolling her eyes and wallowing in her privilege about women in Hollywood, not diversity. But it was only a matter of time before someone got her on the record about diversity. E! News was the outlet – they cornered her on a red carpet and got her to say some words about it.

Kristen Stewart doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but she certainly thinks there’s a diversity problem in Hollywood.

“I think an easy way to speak to it is just the industry is old so the perspective is quite narrow,” Stewart told me at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of Certain Women. “So I think on multiple levels everyone is pretty aware of that. How to fix that? I have no idea.”

Stewart did, however, point to how successful Sundance is at diversity.

“The cool thing about independent movies is we are kind of untouched,” she said. “The cool thing about Sundance is that we are fairly untouched by the political nature of who gets the pats on the backs.”

[From E! News]

Kristen’s speech patterns mimic Yoda. “I think an easy way to speak to it is just the industry is old so the perspective is quite narrow.” The hell? Narrow the industry is. Old the executives are. Anyway, what did you expect from Kristen Stewart trying to unpack a complicated issue during a quickie red carpet interview? I guess if we want to set the bar really low, we can give her credit for not rolling her eyes and saying “Diversity is so boring.”

Kaiser you made me laugh so much with the Yoda comment, thank you.

Not expecting anything for Kristen is the best way to go on, she’ll surprise you when she isn’t saying dumb s-t.

  2. Tiffany says:

    Ummmm..indies have the same issue.

    *sigh*

She really needs to look up the words that come out her mouth.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Talent and brain free.

  4. Naya says:

So in her assessment, independent films are inclusive? Its so manifestly untrue its funny. Besides, indies are governed by the same guiding principle that run the studios; to earn their money back. If casting Kristen Stewart over Gugu Mbatha-raw will help pay for the movie, guess who gets cast?

I defended this girl for years. I said “she isnt a great actress but neither are the guys on that vampire film, so please stop hating”. Then I said, “lots of actors cheat and still get to keep their careers”. And then I said, “the paps intentionally needle her and she is clearly an introvert”. And finally I said, “this girl probably has aspergers or something, just let her do her thing”. Well, I finally give in. She is clearly just a scummy person.

I don’t have that perspective on indie films at all. But I’m thinking about films without famous actors, not even films that cost 10 million, far from that. Often there are public funds and maybe tv channel sponsorship. And sometimes they lose money which makes it even more difficult to keep making them.

Making films needs to be sustainable, so yes, investors need to earn their money back. Is there other solution?

She is not dumb, just … awkward.

    • ny state of mind says:

Kristen dropped out of school around the 9th grade because her teachers didn’t have time for her and her special snowflake ways. Stew’s stage mommy and daddy (both with connections in “the biz”) allegedly set her up with a special snowflake homeschooling program, though who really knows how legit it was and if she really graduated or just says she did.
Your comment might be sarcastic, but in case it’s not, IMO she’s not awkward. Kristen just has an ongoing case of the stoopids, which really tends to flare up every time she opens her questionably educated mouth.

Before I even clicked on this story I thought “Ugg another edition of KStew says words” and there was that phrase in the first few sentences. I think you ladies might consider expanding the “Says words” idea to other celebrities. Kit Harington will always be the original but Kristin Stewart Says Words, Kim Kardashian Says Words and Goopy Paltrow Says All the Smug Words would delight me and make my sarcasm bone tingle!

  7. littlemissnaughty says:

    I’m sticking to #askthemless

It’s like she read this on tumblr and decided to memorize is it case someone asks. Should’ve gotten an Instagram quote for the wage question as well. Where’s a publicist when you need one?

  8. PunkyMomma says:

I can’t help but think that Kristen Stewart and Sarah Palin are related. The word salad gene is dominant in these two.

  9. HollyG says:

Her speechifying makes Sarah Palin’s look like Shakespeare. At least Palin occasionally stumbles over a subject-verb-object construction.

I am of the opinion that Kristin Stewart would have been much much happier under the old studio system of the 1940s and 50s where everything was entirely manufactured and an actress’ image was managed by the PR dept, allowing her to lead a relatively anonymous normal life. However, kstew lives in the age of TMZ and 24/7 opinion seeking, so she needs to make peace with that. In this case, blaming the olds is the easy way out. It’s also unfair, and it lets a lot of people off the hook.

  10. Miss Grace Jones says:

I don’t even consider this woman an actress so why she’s being asked about stuff involving film is odd in itself to me.

  11. Fiorella says:

I don’t mind her words at all. And I think she at least makes more sense than palin

  12. Nancy says:

Every time she opens her mouth I am reminded of why I dislike her so. Youth truly is wasted on the young.

  13. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Considering her level of ‘talent’ I guess if I was her I’d be happy with the level of diversity too.

I mean come on. You’re THAT bad of an actress, you have a poor temperament, you can’t give an interview that makes any sense and you STILL find ANY work?

Don’t ruin it for Kristen folks. She’s living the dream. Nuts to the rest of us.

  14. madi says:

    It’s a great comment.

  15. Jules says:

    Dumb, talentless, boring…

    Oh, and merciful Zeus…PRETENTIOUS.

  16. Jenna says:

This is going to be an unpopular comment, but I think she is very aware that people are going to jump all over every word that comes out of her mouth, and she is playing it safe.

When I went to university and majored in English Lit and Psych, I had to do a minor in women studies to find material that wasn’t written by long dead white men. The canon of English Literature is composed entirely long dead white men…. So I see her point in a roundabout way.

As to her comment on indie films – she is in Sundance promoting a film, I think she was choosing her words carefully.
I’m not a fan of her acting (it’s terrible) but I think she answers the questions diplomatically.

She’s been raked through the coals with public opinion on her behaviour since the Mini Cooper incident, can’t you blame her?

  17. Claire says:

Totally baffled as to what she means by the industry is old so perspective is narrow. Surely the perspective would be more ‘narrow’ if the industry was young… no? And a little more than a century is pretty young by most industry standards so… what on earth is she talking about?

  18. Katie says:

I didn’t know cardboard cut outs could give interviews.

  19. Brains says:

It’s funny to see all you hens talking shit.
