Chris Hemsworth on Liam’s relationship with Miley: ‘I’m happy if he’s happy’

"There's Nothing Like Australia" Campaign Launch

One of my favorite Australian imports (after INXS and Courtney Act), Chris Hemsworth, lent his considerable talents and charm to Tourism Australia’s celebration of Australia Day in New York’s Bryant Park on Monday. As if Australia needed anything other than its culture, gorgeous landscapes and friendly people to attract tourism, Chris lent his silky smooth voice to Tourism Australia’s new ad campaign. Watch this video and try not to book your ticket to Sydney right now.

While on the red carpet for the event, Chris was asked about younger brother Liam’s “re-engagement” to Miley Cyrus. He took a very diplomatic, big brotherly stance, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I’m happy if he’s happy, whatever he’s doing in life. I can’t confirm any of that but, you know, he’s smart [and] he’s happy.

Also at the event, Chris took part in a game of “Would You Rather” with fellow Aussie ambassador Curtis Stone. When asked if he would “rather perform with KISS or Miley Cyrus” Chris picked Miley. Liar. Even people who aren’t KISS fans would rather take part in a rousing pyrotechnic-laced rendition of “Rock ‘n’ Roll All Night” than joining Miley wagging her tongue onstage while singing “Wrecking Ball”…or is that just me? Chris later confessed that he’d rather win an Oscar than surf a huge Aussie wave and declined to answer when asked the (off-the-wall) question of whether he’d “rather dance naked for Donald Trump or have Donald Trump dance naked for you.” Is this something the world has been dying to know?

I like that Chris addressed the Miley/Liam relationship with what I can only think is cautious reserve. At least Chris and Miley can now really talk acting, as she was just cast in director Woody Allen’s new series for Amazon. (Side note: that is the most bizarre casting news. I couldn’t come up with anything more unlikely with an entire pad of Mad Libs.) Now, if you’ll pardon me, I have to visit the Quantas website and check airfares.

    I call Bullsh!t!!!

Yeah me too but what could he really have said that wouldn’t hurt Liam’s feelings in a public forum? You know Liam and everyone else is reading between the lines. But their family seems very close so maintaining civility was the right move.
It’s bullstink but it’s also pretty class on Chris’s part not to air family laundry to the media.

So everyone’s forgotten about him and the Mrs. Dressing up like 1st Nations people for a party? Who cares what he thinks about anyone’s relationship.

  2. Nancy says:

He took the high road and that’s smart if he wants to maintain a relationship with his brother. Sometimes adults can be like teenagers and fight harder when they know their version of loveliness is being challenged. IMO, this brother is a lot brighter than his sibling and has better taste in women unless he’s dating or married to a Miley clone.

    • OhDear says:

Yeah, with that kind of stuff you have to tread really carefully – you don’t want to make it so the person doesn’t feel comfortable discussing things with you if/when [doodoo] hits the fan. Even if you do say something negative, you (1) can only do it once and (2) the comments on the significant other has to be in the context of how the s/o is affecting the person (e.g. “I noticed that you’ve been more worried about saying the wrong thing when you’re around s/o, is everything ok?”)

  3. lunchcoma says:

Isn’t that the only thing you can say about a sibling’s relationship, especially if it’s been on and off?

  4. Annie says:

Lol please. He talked in interviews about how he basically adviced Liam to stay the hell away from her and how some relationships are a terrible idea when you’re young. Miley is not liked in the Hemsworth family, and after all the embarrassing things she’s done lately (I still can’t get over her naked performance wearing a strap-on) I doubt they’re crazy about her now.
Liam’s career is stalling. He needs attention again. What better way than to get back together with the ex that went crazy without him. They’re both asses Liam and Miley. Especially Miley. She lost her damn mind without him. What good can come of this?

    • TrixC says:

Really? I seem to remember an interview he gave when they were previously together where he talked about how much they loved each other, even if they were young. And even if he isn’t wild about her now, he said the only diplomatic thing in the circumstances.

    Mmmm, Curtis Stone….

    *dabs corners of mouth*

  6. Astrid says:

Maybe us Celebitchies can take a road trip together to Austrailia

    • TrixC says:

You do know it’s not possible to drive to Australia from the US, right?

      • Ducky la Rue says:

I think they probably meant a road trip IN Australia, rather than TO Australia. 😀

I think an Australian road trip would be amazing, because I love road trips (at least, from my experience of driving around Canada and the US), and I’ve always wanted to go to Australia. First step, though, got to actually get there. Someday!

    Well played, CHems!

  8. ferdinand says:

Love him, I lust so much after him.. … I wish he would engage more people to see his movies but as long as he keeps working steadily, I’m happy.

  9. Insomniac says:

Heh. “I’m happy if you’re happy” is what I say when I’m not actually all that happy about something but would just as soon let it alone.

  10. Mimi says:

haha. Not only months ago he was saying how stupid Liam was going down that path. Imagine how awkward must be that Liam is diving back into it with full force? he is taking the high road. He won’t ever trash her in public. He got to watch his younger brother being stupid again.

  11. sienna says:

Wow he is so skinny right now. I thought that it was Liam!

Amazing ad. Between that and the Aussie Open tennis, it makes me want to go back. Loved living in Sydney.

  12. Marty says:

He should be thanking Liam, if it wasn’t for his brother’s love life, that story about his offensive New Year’s Eve party would have gotten a lot more traction.

  13. funcakes says:

    Ouch!

  14. kelly says:

    FORGET Australia Day.

If you know ANYTHING about Australia’s history – or if you’ve even been there as a poc – you’d know better.

    • Cranberry says:

      Yup.

    • SKF says:

Actually it’s not about forgetting Australia Day at all. It’s about changing the date to something more inclusive so that everyone can happy about it. It’s a huge conversation right now in Australia and one that dominated the day in news coverage, on social media, etc. #changethedate

  15. A.Key says:

Well what else can he say….

  16. Violet says:

    Who’s that other hot dude?

  17. Cranberry says:

He doesn’t look as good with dark hair as he does as a blond. Or maybe it’s the dark beard too.
