Kate Hudson believes in journaling, eating 5 meals a day & indulging

KH1

Kate Hudson covers the new issue of Self Magazine… to promote her athletic line, Fabletics, and her beauty/fitness book, Pretty Happy. It’s a lot like the situation with Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Alba – the movie roles aren’t always there, so some actresses have branched out to side projects, and now those side projects get those actresses the magazine covers and publicity they crave (and despite their complaints, they do crave it). Kate’s recent publicity blitz reminds me a lot of Cameron Diaz’s blitz a few years ago when she promoted her beauty/fitness book. There’s a lot of “lifestyle advice” and “how to keep your life centered” sort of stuff. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

The perils of doling out advice: “I’m finally at a place in my life where if someone wants to know what I do to stay healthy, why not tell them? Why not put it out there?”

Always change: “I change my routine. I change my look. I change my mind… [with fitness,] I really switch it up. I’ll do Tracy Anderson, I’ll do Body by Simone, I do everything. Nothing, literally nothing, makes me feel like I’m back to my body more than pilates. I’m one of those people who, it’ll be early in the morning and I’ll be in a robe getting my hair done, and I’ll use my Hot5 app—and do push-ups for five minutes!”

Her diet: She goes for five small meals a day, sticking to unprocessed and plant-based foods for the most part. “I’ve pretty much cut meat out. I don’t remember the last time I ate a steak… The hardest thing for me is eating right when I get up, because I don’t like to. I’m not one of those people who wakes up hungry. I wake up and I want coffee and even a green juice, but everybody says you’ve got to eat something, even if it’s little. So that’s sort of the hardest, but I realize that when I do, I eat less during the day or late at night.”

Indulging: “If I want to go out and eat at a restaurant with amazing food, I’ll do that, like, once a week where I’m not thinking about it. I want to indulge! I want to do things that are not necessarily healthy sometimes.”

Journaling: “Journaling keeps me centered. When you jot things down, you can really see what’s going on. What are you eating? What are your food patterns? You can get clued in to the things that are going on with you. It’s proven that people who express gratitude, people who make that a practice in their life, are more joyful. Any sort of affirmation is a very simple way of reframing your thoughts, removing yourself from the negative.”

Societal pressures: “Find the place where you feel really good in yourself. We’ve been programmed to feel like we’re under this great obligation as women to look and be a certain way. And that’s not our fault. That’s what culture and society have gifted us as women. Thank you but no thank you.”

[From Self]

I feel like CB would probably enjoy Kate’s thoughts on fitness a lot more than I’m enjoying it. CB likes Zumba and spin and she likes to work out with other people, which Kate talks about a lot in this interview, that fitness is best enjoyed in a group, when everyone is dancing or sweating together. That, to me, sounds like hell. I hate working out in groups. I’ve taken one class in my whole adult life and I HATED it. What I do like about Kate is that her message is very positive – she’s not saying there’s just one way to work out or be centered or diet. Her overwhelming message is: do what works for you, find what makes you centered, find what makes you happy. It’s very non-judgmental and I appreciate that.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, I don’t have much to say about these groundbreaking revelations.

      • Kitten says:

This is good 3AM reading material for when you wake up and can’t fall back asleep.

What was the last movie she was in?

      • minx says:

Kitten, that’s what I was going to ask. She’s been on the long, slow downward slide ever since Almost Famous.
She must have a very good publicist, and coming from a famous family can’t hurt.

  2. Maum says:

    Indeed.

Since when is celeb fitness/skincare regime a thing?

    • littlemissnaughty says:

To be fair, they ask these women a LOT about that stuff. I don’t know why, it’s not like we ever learn anything groundbreaking. But of course they think the world is dying to hear their thoughts on diet/fitness/beauty and possibly so much so that they should write books etc. The thing is, Hugh Jackman gets asked all the time as well. I don’t think he would ever dream of writing a book.

She does look frickin’ awesome though. But we all know exactly what it takes to look like that. Frankly, I don’t want to pay the price. For looking like that or for the book.

    • PearlClutcherNeedNotAppy says:

Celeb fitness has been a thing forever. Jane Fonda ring any bells? She’s the first one I can think of. Tons of magazines, skin care products, fitness products and clothes sell every minute because of celebs endorsing them.

      • Maum says:

Yes but Jane Fonda was all about her fitness videos that served a direct purpose.

Now you get random celebs lecturing us about their exercise regime, their diet, skin regime, general lifestyle. It’s so tiresome.

20 years ago we had actual models who sold perfume and beauty products. If you look at ads in magazines these days how many real models are there left? They all seem to be celebs.
Goop is launching a skincare range when she admits that she doesn’t use sunscreen and untouched pics in the Mail today show how terrible her skin really is. And people really want to buy these products?

Latest ‘coup’ is Pamela Anderson’s son modelling for Saint Laurent. WTF?

      • mp says:

and Jane Fonda has had back surgery, and hip and knee replacement and a very good amount of plastic surgery!

I will *never* take “health” advice from a celeb, as they are gifted with good genes, time, and money, even if they “work hard” for their body, food, money, etc.

Kate Hudson would still look awesome because Goldie Hawn does and you can’t convince me otherwise.

    • Maum says:

And let’s not forget that they have chefs, nutritionists, trainers, beauticians, stylists and unlimited funds.

      • my3cents says:

        This.
And let’s face it- this her full time job.
She goes to the gym, and has other people take care of her earthly needs-home, kids, food, shopping etc.
So this is what’s become of her?
I’m a little bit sad. I used to remember her as fun and the sort of person you’d have a good time hanging around with.
Now- so boring …with her goop squad and health obsession

  3. OSTONE says:

I hate working out in groups too but enjoy doing Zumba at the gym. I still have not found a balance when it comes to eating right the majority of the time, and balancing a very busy life with healthy choices.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I did this class once called “strip fit” which was not nearly as racy as it sounds, but it was so much fun. You learned parts of a routine and then put it all together, and the hour went by really fast. I liked Zumba, too, but I felt uncoordinated.

  4. Little Darling says:

She’s going to be launching a lifestyle/wellness website that is going to also include travel, which will set her apart a little.

  5. Kitten says:

She lost me at Tracy Anderson…

I like group classes but I don’t like having a “workout partner” and I HATE running with other people. Running is a solo activity for me and another person is just a distraction.

So she doesn’t eat meat and only eats plant-based and unprocessed foods. How Goopy. But yeah, that’s pretty much what it takes to have a body like hers.

    • Jayna says:

I hate running with other people also. I do it here and there, but try to avoid it. I love to solo run and be with my own thoughts, music, or daydreams, or just quieting my mind if I’m in a bad mood. I like finding my own rhythm in the run,

Some days though I need someone to push me, as I don’t want to be out there, and that’s when a jogging partner helps. I had a friend we would do intervals that made you keep increasing speed every minute or so until eventually you were terribly out of breath and start over. Doing it with a friend was necessary to keep pushing each other because it is so hot where I live and drains you.

    ….and purging

  7. QQ says:

Kate Hudson Believes in Showing up to the opening of a box of cereal and being as much as possibly in a skimpy outfit * to calm her Thirst, Forget water, this is the most revolutionary way to refresh you when you are parched

    * and Young tender up and coming dudes in the peak of their refractory periods!

  8. Josefina says:

I like what she’s saying about finding what’s best for you. My workout routines are not ideal because I’m a lazy ass and I take a lot of breaks, but I get fatigued very easily. I’d rather go at my own slow rythm making little improvements over the weeks. It may sound bad but hey, I started working out with this method 2 years ago and haven’t stopped since. I’m sure if I pushed myself harder, I would’ve quitted shortly after.

  9. lila fowler says:

I think you should eat only when you are hungry, not when others tell you that you should. I am at work at 8a and normally am not hungry until noon-ish. I have never had a weight problem. Gotta listen to your body and what it wants.

    • Jayna says:

I agree. I rarely eat in the morning because I don’t care to most of the time. Other times, if I”m hungry, I do eat. Sometimes I do only because I know I will be busy all morning and won’t be able to eat later.

Somedays when I start eating in the morning I just continue grazing all day. It sets me off for some reason. I just do better eating very little if I do.

      • Pandy says:

I’ve switched eating habits a few months ago. breakfast is almost noonand lunch and dinner follow. I agree with you. When I ate breakfast when I woke I felt like I ate all day long. And I’m betting Kate spends a few hours exercising every day and stringently watches every bite.

    • yellow says:

I’ve been doing similar. Just wait till I am ready for breakfast, and it can often be as late as 11 am (at work by 8:30am).

  10. swak says:

I don’t like classes either. I’m pretty much a solo person when it comes to working out. I change it up also, treadmill, outside walking pushing a stroller, arms workout, legs workout, abs workout, rowing machine, etc. I go with my daughter and we each do our own thing. Her workout gear has popped up on my FB page. When you see the back of some of it, there is not much support. It may be good on her or someone with little boobage, but anyone over B cup would bounce around in it. JMO. I only saw one piece and hope she has a variety that will be good for all.

Edit – Just went to the website and the sports bras don’t look like they can support much.

  11. islandwalker says:

What are her thoughts on employment based on merit?

  12. Lisa says:

Holy shit, I’m getting dizzy from how revolutionary this is. She’s turning the world on its head.

I’m the opposite: I love and look forward to breakfast. I drink water beforehand, but after that, give me food.

  13. elle says:

I don’t understand that cover garment at all. An offset crotch snap? How’s that going to feel when you drag it over and actually snap it?

  14. JenniferJustice says:

The headline had me thinking she was journalling and I came in to read with great cynicism how she logs her thoughts, you know, her deep philosphoical thoughts – and then read that she writes down what food she ate during the day – Ha!

she says no to societal pressures regarding the standard of beauty and yet here she is trying to tell the world how she keeps her body fit, how she eats, and her skincare regime. Ummm…Am I the only one seeing the hypocracy in that?

Enough with her already. Make a movie or STFU!

    • mp says:

haha me too! I was like, “oh, you mean journalling to relieve stress and think about interesting thoughts?” wow! kate hudson? rly?

  15. sofie says:

Kate, gwyneth, aniston, diaz and the rest of their clique should be called the paint drying club. Not one of them has anything interesting about them, aside from beauty and exercise they have nothing else to talk about.

  16. brooksie says:

I don’t get the hate for her here. She seems to be in a good place and we can’t fault her for doing what she is passionate about.

  17. Sofia says:

Why should we take lifestyle advice from a celebrity that is pretty much just that at the moment? These people live lives far from the average citizen. Kate Hudson doesn’t have concerns and worries that most of us deal with and we probably don’t truly understand the pressures these celebs have to manage. That’s ok. But selling books like she has something groundbreaking to share annoys me because she just doesn’t.

As an example of something different and valuable we have Mindy Kaling and Shonda Rhimes. They both wrote books but what they share was honest, they were both honest about their privileges and about things that no matter who you are you’ll probably identify with. It wasn’t vapid or showy. I would even say that it was empowering.

Maybe I’m just reaching a point of exhaustion about these superficial side projects from actresses that just want to tell us how to live.

  18. Sarah01 says:

She looks healthy and takes care of her body. She really looks great!

  19. Alix says:

Why is this woman in the news? She hasn’t done anything relevant in the entertainment world for eons.

  20. raincoaster says:

In tangentially related news, I’m not loving the new Self magazine. It looked at first like the new editor was going to change it into a Glamour/Cosmo clone, but they seem to have dialed back on the pointless fashion stuff without going back to the lifestyle/health/wellbeing stuff that gave people a reason to buy Self. It doesn’t seem to know what it is anymore.

I AM glad we aren’t seeing prominent product placement from the editor’s pals anymore though. Dylan Lauren has no place in a health magazine.

  21. Anonymous says:

I’m going to sound like a right royal bitch here, but it bugs me when Kate talks about gratitude and joy and balance and blah blah blah. This is a woman who was born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth and has had everything in life handed to her on that proverbial silver platter. Everyone always talks about how fun and light-hearted she seems to be, and yes, she does — I bet she’d be great to share a bottle of wine with! — but … well, of COURSE she’s fun and light-hearted. She’s had a damn easy life. Comparatively speaking, I mean. She’s never had to worry about money, her career was practically gifted to her, she has a lot of help, she gets to travel all the time and stay in spectacular places… Hell, I’d be pretty happy-go-lucky too.

And I’m not saying you can’t be light-hearted and fun if you DO have a harder life. I’m just saying that it grates on me when someone like Kate makes it all sound so easy when that’s exactly what her life is — EASY.

Otherwise? She strikes me as exceptionally shallow.
