Super Bowl trailers: does ‘Jason Bourne’ look better than ‘Captain America’?

wenn23460099

The Super Bowl is the time for many companies to spend millions of dollars just to get 30 seconds of air time. At this point in American life, I feel like many people just watch the SuperBowl for the commercials, and these days, studios are trying to get in on the action by previewing some of their biggest future releases. So at SB50, there were several new trailers and teasers shown.

Here’s Jason Bourne, the new Jason Bourne film (I know, shocking!), in which everyone tries to pretend that The Bourne Legacy never happened. Personally, I liked The Bourne Legacy (the Jeremy Renner one), although it probably shouldn’t be considered a Bourne movie. We get a glimpse of Julia Stiles playing the same character, and Tommy Lee Jones as the new shadowy CIA-type. We also hear (but do not see) Alicia Vikander’s character.

Here’s the new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse. Oscar Isaac is Apocalypse, the super-old mutant with blue skin. We also get a good look at Michael Fassbender’s ginger Magneto beard and Jennifer Lawrence doing something as Mystique.

This was our first look at the live-action version of The Jungle Book. I liked the cartoon when I was a kid, but I don’t know if a new generation of kids will enjoy this.

Wow, this Captain America: Civil War teaser is SO GOOD. It’s a proper “teaser” in that it leaves you wanting more. Sebastian Stan looks great, and once again, we get a glimpse of Black Panther. And poor Don Cheadle!

Is anyone else kind of over the Deadpool stuff?

Independence Day: Resurgence trailer… Jeff Goldblum is… very… ominous.

What is 10 Cloverfield Lane about? Something something monsters. I don’t know.

Here’s is the absolutely absurd and dumb-looking Gods of Egypt. After this one, I can only say… I’m done. Totally done. This is ridiculous.

10 Cloverfield Lane is suppose to be the lead up to events in Cloverfield.

Captain America: Civil War question- I thought Black Widow was on his side? Or does she switch sides at some point in the movie?

    • embertine says:

Nope, she’s team Tony. The longer trailer explains why, sort of… but one of the great things about that is that she and Cap are total snark-buddies and have learnt to really trust one another, but she just thinks he’s profoundly wrong on this issue. I’m looking forward to seeing how that plays out because the development of their friendship in CA:TWS was excellent.

      • M.A.F. says:

That’s why seeing her on that side was confusing. Plus, at the end of the last Avengers movie she was at the new headquarters. But then again, that was only the headquarters.

      • H says:

The Russo Brothers have hinted she may be a double agent and not betraying Steve. I hope so. But if not, I’m looking forward to the epic Hawkeye vs. Widow fight you know is coming.

  2. LadyMTL says:

I am very excited for Captain America, and on the fence about X-Men. I loved the Age of Apocalypse storyline (in the comics anyway) but there’s something about this trailer that leaves me feeling a bit cold. Maybe Oscar Isaac isn’t menacing enough for me, IDK.

As for the rest…eeeehh. Jungle Book looks like it might be fun, but Gods of Egypt? Yeesh, no.

    • Lurker says:

Yeah, I can’t quite figure out why X-Men leaves me so cold lately. I didn’t hate First Class, but the last one, Days of Future Past, I thought was a mess. And the whole world seemed to love it.

Civil War, on the other hand, I am all over. MCU never lets me down. The films are great, the Netflix stuff is awesome, and I even like Agents of Shield. Is there a Marvel fangirl card I should be carrying or something?

Really like Jungle Book trailer too. That bit of Bare Necessities? Come on, that just warms the heart! Clover field Lane and Independence Day didn’t do much for me, but Christ on a bike, Gods of Egypt looks WOEFUL. OFFENSE TAKEN.

    • Rachel says:

I hated Days of Future Past. But I’m pretty excited about the new one. It’s really weird, but I’m looking forward to Olivia Munn as Psylocke. She’s never even pinged my radar before one way or the other, but I do know from reading about her on here that she’s studied martial arts for a very long time, so I hope she gets plenty of chances to show off her stuff in the new movie.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Civil War hello there! So so good, I’m excited for that one. The trailers/teasers haven’t let me down at all. I feel like I should be excited about X-Men but I’m not, I mean it looks ok but I don’t know if I’m going to buy tickets for that one yet. As for the Jungle Book, I was not expected to be that excited to watch it. The last bit of the trailer was funny, I might have to drag my 8 year old nephew to watch it with me. Cloverfield Lane is about what? I thought it was a kidnapping story but I’m actually not sure anymore. I know this might be the sequel(?) to Cloverfield but I didn’t watch it so I have no idea about what this is about.

Gods of Egypt….white people as Egyptians. Hard pass

XMen looks good. I can only hope they don’t give a big F U to fans like X3 did

Jason Bourne is proof that they should’ve given Matt what he wanted for the last movie. I mean did anyone SEE that last one?

    Captain America…YES.

    • Lillylizard says:

DNA tests on a range of middle to upper class ancient Egyptian mummies conclude that although a reasonable % were of mixed african races they were mostly of semitic origin (Mesopotamian, Assyria,Sumerian, Chaldeans, Medes, Persians, Scythians) in the earlier mummies with a good sprinkle of central Mediterranean arriving around 1000BCE , so white isn’t such a long stretch just not Celtic white.

    • milietan says:

I grew up in Egypt (American but my parents were International teachers) and I promise you there are Egyptians with blue eyes, fair skin, and light brown hair. The percentage is low (about 1/20) but there are definitely white Egyptians! And then the Coptic and Pharaonic people are what most people (including themselves!) would consider “white”, albeit more olive toned. Many of the Pharoahs and royal families of the ancient times were of Greek origin. Do you think Greek people are not white?

  4. ell says:

lmao at gods of egypt, it looks like a terrible film from the early 00’s.

i’m excited for deadpool, don’t care for anything else.

  5. kri says:

Welcome back, Matt Damon. Also………Gods of Egypt. Wow. That is some awful movie-making. Whose idea was that, and I bet even his mother is humiliated and has finally kicked him out of her basement. Jesus!

  6. H says:

    Bite your tongue, Kaiser. 🙂

The Civil War trailer was the talk of my FB feed most of the night. Nobody commented about Bourne, or mansplaining!Matt. Sorry.

    • NUTBALLS says:

I love Bourne, but Civil War is what’s getting me excited this year.

X-Men is the only other trailer that looked interesting.

      Deadpool looks ridiculous.

    • Jellybean says:

Civil War for me too. It is interesting that the Bourne stunt guru Dan Bradley is not working on the new Bourne film – change of direction, lack interest from Mr Bradley or falling out? Jeremy Renner’s production company has hired him to make an action film with Michael Penna in the lead, so maybe he just wanted to do something different.

  7. Cs says:

Against all odds I’m really excited about Deadpool. I didn’t want to be since I’m trying to keep my expectations low, but Ryan Reynolds looks like he might actually be doing a GREAT job at it.

  8. Barbara says:

Quite the opposite, I’m nowhere near over deadpool. Can’t wait til Friday!!!!!!
It’s going to be amazing and as many critics are saying, will redefine the comics movies. One of them said it’s going to be BD and AD – as in superhero movies before and after Deadpool. Excited!!!!!
I’m a huge Bourne fangirl, so I can’t wait and I can never have enough of Sebastian Stan, so yay CA Civil War

  9. RuddyZooKeeper says:

The voice actors in Junglebook – I knew I recognized Idris! And Bill Murray! The casting for Mowgli looks amazing. And just visually speaking, the way his little legs dangle, jump, and swing is spot on. I’ve skipped the other live action remakes, but I’m there for this one!

  10. Nicole says:

I don’t care. I will be seeing Deadpool. No one will see it with me. Its gonna be my splurge. Cannot wait for Bourne and Captain America. Jungle Book looks kinda good.

  11. Miss V says:

The new Bourne movie looks really good. But I love Matt Damon. Don’t care about the X-men movies. Never have, never will. And I CANNOT WAIT for Captain America CW It looks amazing. My hubby and I will be seeing that on opening weekend. Date night with Cap!!!

  12. Jsilly4e says:

I liked the Bourne Legacy but as a stand alone movie, not a Bourne one. And Oscar Isaac was a welcome surprise. That’s when he first came on my radar. That and Robin Hood. And by the time I saw 10 Years I was hooked! Very jealous of Kate Mara.

Excited for Bourne, Deadpool and Captain America. I’m looking forward to Xmen too but I may not get a babysitter for that one. I’ll wait for On Demand.

ETA The Jungle Book looks so good. Gonna take my son to see that one. He’s so upset he can’t see Deadpool. Poor little guy.

    • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Jsilly4e, who wrote: “I liked the Bourne Legacy but as a stand alone movie, not a Bourne one.”

It was ‘supposed’ to be a stand alone movie, the introduction to a spin-off series about a different asset from a different Agency because Universal didn’t want to close the door on getting Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass back to the “Bourne” franchise. Universal was very explicit about this when the film was announced 1 year prior to “Legacy’s” release, but they were also all about the Benjamins (e.g. getting butts in the seats) so they waited until the 11th hour to ‘explicitly’ correct the misconceptions that had grown, such as: 1) Matt Damon would somehow be in the film as Jason Bourne and 2) that “Bourne Legacy” was a continuation of the “Bourne” series. By the time Universal got around to explicitly denying these things, about three weeks before the film opened, it was too late … no one listened.

Even after seeing the “Bourne Legacy”–in which the ending of “The Bourne Ultimatum” was completely destroyed by Tony Gilroy out of spite, there was ‘no’ Jason Bourne, and it was explained in great detail that Aaron Cross was from a different Agency program which used ‘enhancement drugs’ to get their assets close to the level of the C.I.A. Treadstone and Blackbriar assets–people still labeled “Legacy” the 4th Borune film and started dreaming about a Jason Bourne Aaron Cross Team up.

It’s my understanding that the title of this 4th “Bourne” film is simply “Jason Bourne.” I assume that the Ludlum Estate finally gave Universal permission to create an original script using the Jason Bourne character. Paul Greengrass, Matt Damon, and Christopher Rouse wrote the screenplay for this 4th film. Damon and Greengrass are also co-producers of the film with Frank Marshal. I am SO stoked! 🙂

Here is the awesome poster for the 2016 “Jason Bourne” film:

  13. Chinoiserie says:

Gods of Eqypt looks so bad it could be good. And it is kind of colorfull to look at. Not that I ever see it, probbaly among if not the worst flop of 2016

  14. Breakfast Margaritas says:

Well it looks like there will be lots of movies to drag the nieces and nephews to see, oops, I mean take them to see. I’m super hyped to see Sansa Stark in X-Men. 😉

  15. dAsh says:

I love the Bourne series except that Renner one so I am so excited for Damon to be back! The cgi and special effects on that Xmen and Independence Day trailer looks fake AF.

  16. Bonnie says:

I am 100% done with Matt Damon.

  17. Size Does Matter says:

I’m not sure how this happened, but I haven’t seen a single one of the Bourne movies. Worth it to catch up?

  18. DesertReal says:

Mmm… the Winter Soldier beats them all hands down.
But nope, not seeing the Bourne Identity. I will be there front & center opening weekend for X-men (finally Apocalypse is in a movie!!!) Civil War, & Independence Day.
    Nostalgia trip here I come!!

  19. Kristen says:

The Bourne movies are decent action movies, but the trailer for this looks ridiculous:

“What? It’s Jason Bourne? What does he want?”
    “I’m Jason Bourne.”

It’s like the Matt Damon puppet saying his name over and over again in Team America.

  20. petitehirondelle says:

Seriously, go for Gods of Egypt, it seems a true fun film to watch… For Bourne, I have that strange feeling that it will be something “already seen”

  21. Holmes says:

What a load of WTF. What is Oscar Isaac doing in this trash? Who asked for an Independence Day sequel? How is it possible that this Gods of Egypt mess get all the way through all the levels of approval and production and apparently not one person, at any point, questioned it?

    • petitehirondelle says:

take it for what is: fun… i think we must not search in that version of gods of egypt any clever part or truth about history…. Curious about the boxoffice, it must be expensive to product

  22. Melanie says:

Yes, it does. I love the Bourne franchise. This is one of the few movies I’ve actually been excited to see in quite a long time.
