Julianne Hough won’t be working on any films ‘if it’s going to make me miserable’

hough redbook

I love King Cavalier Charles Spaniels. They have such grumpy little faces! Julianne Hough has two Cavaliers, I’m pretty sure. They feature quite heavily on her Instagram, and now one of them has made it to the cover of Redbook! GrumpyFace Puppy is a MODEL! Honestly, I would have preferred if this post had just been about the dog, but let’s go ahead and talk about Julianne. She’s currently promoting Dirty Grandpa (which was slammed by critics and audiences) and… she’s getting into the side-business thing. She’s doing a lifestyle website and an athletic-wear line. So, a little bit of Goop and a little bit of Kate Hudson. Some highlights from the interview:

Why she’s no longer afraid to tell it like it is: “When I was 21, I did and said things because I wanted to be accepted. But there’s a point where you grow up. Now I’m much more honest with myself and other people.”

Why she lets her fiancé Brooks Laich be her “leading man”: “Because of the nature of my career, it’s very easy for me to call the shots and ‘be the man.’ So it’s very nice to feel like a strong woman and still have my man be my leading man.”

On embracing the good and bad times: “I’ve always been positive. But trust me, I have my days when I just break down and cry—and I don’t even know why I’m crying! I’m all about embracing those times, too. If you never feel sad about anything, there’s nothing dynamic to life—and that’s boring.”

On learning to live life and love what you do: “A director once told me, ‘I’m getting too old for this s–t, so I only want to work with people who are going to make it fun.’ That’s true. Life’s too short. I’m not going to bust my butt on a movie just because it’s better for my career if it’s going to make me miserable.”

[From Redbook]

“I’m not going to bust my butt on a movie just because it’s better for my career if it’s going to make me miserable”
– I’m not sure what this means? She’s not going to take roles in movies that aren’t “fun”? She’s not going to work just to work? Whatever she’s trying to say, the result is that she sounds sort of out-of-touch. Millions of people don’t have a choice about being “miserable” on their jobs, you know? Plus, it’s not like Hollywood is breaking down her door, offering her great roles. She’s at a point in her career where she pretty much has to take whatever she’s offered.

As for the “be the man” thing… the entrenched gender stereotypes will get you every time. I understand what she’s trying to say, but she said it poorly.

All I have to say is that I love her King Charles. Looks exactly like my pup ❤
    They are the sweetest dogs!

The last picture has strange proportions.
I agree about the thing that many people have to go to work everyday and feel miserable but have to pay the rent. Plus there are a lot of talented and unemployed actors out there.

Yeah, that’s a bad photo. For a split-second, I thought the blanket-covered chair that she’s leaning on was actually some kind of dog (or maybe a goat?) with its butt to the camera. The folds somehow look like hocks (rear-knees). Weird layout decision.

    What?

    Adorable dog.

she means she needs to look up to her man and have him lead to be able to be attracted to him. its pretty commmon with succesful women, especially when they are using dating services they refuse to date down. its often blamed on men and there are certainly men who have problems with it but from personal experiences most women cant deal with a man who is less successful or makes less money.
what i found is actually that less successful women have more progressive views in relationships. for example when it comes to paying for a date they have less problems with spliting the bill or taking turns paying while “alpha” women want the men to pay.
which is ironic because successful women profit from eroding gender roles but wont allow the men in their lives to adopt new roles.

She’s very young and not well-spoken, much as she tries – she is coming into her own, though.
There has been a huge change in her since leaving Seacrest behind, no?
      That contract drained her.
She was absolutely enchanting as a pro dancer on DWTS – lord, can she dance.
Other than that, I’m not sure she has much star power.

  4. LAK says:

She has a face for those endless hallmark/lifetime movies. Definitely not a face for movies or even network/cable television.

She’s the acting equivalent of a catalogue model. Utterly forgettable, but will probably work all their lives if they stick to their lane.

      BURN!!!!!!😀

She did Lip Sync Battle and it was by far the FUNNIEST thing I have ever not expected from someone. First her song choice was classic and tongue in cheek, and inside the song she also performs one song line that if you know her history is really funny and shows she can take a shot at herself. I cake out of that really impressed with her ability for humour.

I also watched Dancing with the Stars this year for the first time, and I really loved her a a judge. I think she’s basically a good girl, who’s sweet and hard working but the Lip Sync battle definitely made me like her a hell of a lot more, like it made her cooler.

Is she very much in demand ? I have never heard of her .

  6. censored says:

Why is Julianne Hough even a thing ?

  7. Jayna says:

She’s such a cute girl, but her acting is bland, one-note acting, no range, in the couple of movies I’ve seen her in.

  8. Armenthrowup says:

They have grumpy faces but they are just the most loving dogs ever – I love them and you put a celebrity on the cover of a magazine with a Cava, I’m not even going to look at the celebrity. Puppies rule!

  9. Luxe says:

    She is so irritating.

  10. Skins says:

Love watching her dance. That’s all I got on her

  11. kri says:

She is a good dancer. And an annoying human being. The dog is a star.

  12. Snappyfish says:

I love her Fiancé. We see her at Caps games sometimes & she is v v sweet & approachable which is lovely

    • Axis2ClusterB says:

Brooks is awesome and they’re such a cute couple.

The Caps are having a hell of a season!

  13. serena says:

Really? I thought that after Grease live she would have much more roles offered.

  14. Nancy says:

She’s almost as annoying as her brother. She had her chance to break through as Seacrest’s beard and couldn’t even do that right. Buhbye

  15. Greenieweenie says:

Snore. Why are some women so preoccupied with who “leads/is the man” in a relationship? Is this because of Christian dogma or some other blather? Ever hear men talking about how its such a relief when their female partners ‘lead’? (Haha, more like most are just thrilled when their female partner is willing to ‘lead’ in the domestic realm, e.g. clean/cook, so they don’t have to).

    Boring.

  16. Kate says:

Julianne , we’d also prefer you not take film roles, as we will be miserable watching.

  17. Marianne says:

If she only wants to take “fun” roles then that’s fine, considering that’s all shes really going to get. Do you really think studios are knocking on her door for some important Oscar baity role? No. She probably will continue doing supporting roles in comedies/rom-coms etc.

  18. Lis says:

Wow lots of haters here. I love Julianne. She seems down to earth and and like a sweet girl to me. I enjoyed Grease live and some of her movies I’ve seen. She’s an amazing dancer. Is she well spoken? No, but I think she tries to be a positive role model and I enjoy her Instagram posts.
