Amy Schumer claims ‘Taylor this is a thigh gap’ post was a joke at her own expense

Taylor that's not a thigh gap. This is a thigh gap

A photo posted by @amyschumer on

Amy Schumer is a comedian, so she may get more leeway than others for saying and doing controversial things. I get that. Sometimes she missteps and puts her foot in it though. On Tuesday she Instagrammed the above photo in which it looks like she’s having a ball on the beach with a friend. (It made me wish it was warm like this so I could chill on a nice beach, but I’m sick of winter and I digress.) She captioned it “Taylor that’s not a thigh gap. This is a thigh gap.” Um ok? I guess her point was that Taylor had a thigh gap at the Grammys in that weird granny panty/open skirt crop top combo. I would have criticized Taylor’s fashion instead, but that’s what I do for a living. I don’t think it was necessary or funny to bring up Taylor’s body type and I didn’t get the joke. A lot of commenters on Instagram were questioning how the caption was funny and said they didn’t get it either. Some got mad on Taylor’s behalf (she has a lot of fans who tend to get indignant for her).

In response, Schumer Instagrammed a weird photo where she’s wearing a wig and a beard. She said that it was a joke at her own expense and that she’s a comedian. She also tried to equate her beard with the thigh gap comment which… no, that doesn’t work or make sense.

Can we just not bring up people’s bodies in a negative way? We have all sorts in this world. Let’s not shame anyone for their build, big or small. I remember when Schumer was on Kelly and Michael, she asked to touch Kelly Ripa’s waist and insisted on getting behind Kelly to compare herself to her. That’s not cool and she probably thought that was a joke too. People who are thin have feelings and it shouldn’t be acceptable to skinny shame. What was Schumer’s point? It’s similar to what she did to Kelly Ripa.

I saw it as a joke at her own expense. A thigh gap is apparently what people aspire to and she clearly does not have it (nor do i!!) I agree that sometimes women are skinny shamed and as a former very skinny person with no ‘meat’ on my legs and small boobs all thru high school, i get it!

On the other hand, i was shocked when i saw Taylor, she looks quite gaunt i thought? Has she always been this thin and i just didn’t notice?

    • paranormalgirl says:

Then she should have made it about herself and not about Taylor Swift. By including Swift in her caption, she drew her into the “joke”

      • Louise says:

        Yawn

      • Me ThreeI says:

I didn’t take it as a slam against Taylor. I took it as both a joke about her own body and a slam against society and how consumed we are with being thin. Thigh gaps are celebrated now. And, as someone who’s struggled with weight for most of my life, I must say while extremely thin people sometimes get grief for how they look, for the most part they’re not treated to the jokes and disgust larger people are everyday of our lives.

    • C says:

Taylor is like a saint these days. No one can say anything about her….not even a joke.

    • ladysussex says:

Thank you, Louise, for bringing that up! I was very thin all my life, and people were always quite comfortable pointing it out. “Skinny shaming” has always existed. I was naturally thin no matter how much I ate, and I was a healthy eater. Untrue rumors were spread about me in HS and even in college that I had to be “purging” all the food I ate in order to stay so thin and it just wasn’t true. I was just thin. Once on a college trip, one of the girls joked “We’re gonna kill the skinny bitch when she falls asleep.” because they didn’t like that I could eat so much and still be thin. It was a joke but it was still disturbing to me. Can you imagine if they said “We’re gonna kill the fat bitch…”?

    • Seya says:

Sure. She can joke and shame herself all she wants. She has no business dragging others down with herself. But she will. Because every Tom and Harry makes news everytime they mention Swifty because she generates that much fan interest. So yeah. Attention gained. Mission accomplished

  2. CityGirl says:

I would have liked Taylor Swift’s dress soooo much better without the granny panty revealing split ….that’s all I got

    • Jag says:

Agreed! It would have been so pretty if it were just a full skirt.

As for this post/article, I have no idea what any of it means. I don’t like Amy Schumer, so maybe that’s why I don’t understand?

    • J.Mo says:

      Those were some big panties

      • Breakfast Margaritas says:

Right? Those are the tallest panties I’ve seen since I had to help granny put on her church girdle. They’re almost turtleneck panties. I think it would’ve been much cuter if they were actual shorts under the skirt instead of these atrocious evening panties.

      • Janetdr says:

        “Turtleneck panties” *snort* hahaha!

    • Nancy says:

CityGirl: Granny panties, lol. You have to remember Swift wouldn’t expose her belly button for fear the paps would somehow exploit it! Everybody takes things so personally and have to be so politically correct at all costs. They would probably enjoy life more if they just lived it and stopped worrying about every little piece of sh!t. Amy isn’t stupid, she’s a comedian doing her thing, Swiftie’s fans should just do their homework with their idol’s music playing in the background and calm down.

  3. zan says:

It feels like she’s just jealous of thin girls… sad

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she was just kidding.

    • just me says:

lol I tend to think that Amy Schumer really doesn’t care about being stick thin

    • isabelle says:

Thin girls usually think bigger girls are jealous and some bigger girls think thin girls are jealous. Women being catty is a stereotype that we live up to, wallow in and then eat it afterwards.

  4. Snowflake says:

It’s a joke, sheesh! Making fun of the stupidity of the thigh gap thing. Much ado about nothing

    • Mari says:

Totally agree. She was making fun of herself! That’s part of being a comedian.

    • vauvert says:

But why name check? Make jokes all you want, but why call out people about it? Making jokes at your own expense doesn’t mean you get a free pass to bring others into it. I don’t care whether it’s Swifty or anyone else, that’s not cool.

    • Kitten says:

That was my first reaction until C/B described what she did with Kelly Ripa.

It’s just really weird when people do sh*t like that. She comes across as incredibly self-conscious about her weight.
I don’t know why, either. She’s normal-sized and has a hot boyfriend. Eh.

    • mark says:

I doubt people would be so blase if someone said something about amy or ashley graham

  5. aims says:

I’ve always said that we need to leave people’s bodies alone. Also, Amy’s not over weight, she’s normal.

  6. Alex says:

The joke was stupid and I’m beyond over Amy already.
And ugh that photo reminds me how much I hated Taylor’s outfit

  7. Hotpockets says:

I didn’t understand either what her passive joke at Taylor was supposed to be? funny? skinny shaming? trolling? making fun of her own body? I love how these types of women go on and on about body confidence and positivity, but at the same time put down slim figured women in order to elevate themselves and their message. It’s not about, “real women have curves.” Why should women validate themselves based on their body types. No one ever said real men have broad shoulders, it’s all so asinine. Yes, Taylor is skinny, that’s how she’s always looked and that is fine.

    • FingerBinger says:

These types of women what does that mean? You say you don’t understand the joke. You don’t understand the intent but then you go on to say things about Amy that sound unkind.

      • Hotpockets says:

Amy posed not too long ago in her underwear for a positive body image campaign and did a candid interview, which is great, but then she makes a passive joke at her expense and another woman’s expense. Why couldn’t she just say, this is what a thigh gap looks like in her caption, why did she have to bring Taylor into it? I guess saying these types of women is too general, but I don’t understand people who talk about the importance of positive body image and confidence, only to take digs at others in order to elevate their own messages? I am obviously not the only person who didn’t see the humor in her joke or the intentions of it, this is coming from someone who doesn’t even have strong feelings about either Taylor or Amy.

I didn’t really say anything about Amy that was unkind, other then she is being really petty and unfunny here.

    • Kitten says:

      I agree with you, hotpockets.

I don’t mind Amy–I’d say that I’m indifferent to her–but this was pretty weird.

    • Thisfacebelievesyou says:

I really do not think Amy meant anything negative to Taylor and probably only used her in the joke because that atrocious crotch-shot skirt is everywhere right now. She is doing what a lot of people do when they feel overweight or otherwise unattractive. They mock themselves before anyone else gets a chance to make fun of them first. Unfortunately (in their minds) they are never going to be the hot popular girl, but they can be the funny self-deprecating popular girl. After a few years it becomes natural and in a bid to make fun of herself she doesn’t realize it may come off as making fun of the other person.

  8. lem says:

She could have made the same joke without name-checking Taylor and people would have laughed. It’s like she name-checked her b/c she knew it would get attention. The thing with Ripa is gross too. I know Ripa takes pride in her fitness and being thin but to have someone make it seem like your body type (whether natural or fought for) is unusual/alien is bound to make even the most secure person feel a bit insecure. I know Amy is supposedly making herself the butt of these jokes but she could do it without bringing the bodies of other real women into on the joke.

    • perplexed says:

I actually thought she might have been complimenting Ripa while also being self-deprecating. Ripa said Schumer was the hugest thing right now and at another point said “you are so big right now”, and from there I simply thought Schumer did a self-deprecating play on those words. It kind of seemed like one of those openings the host (accidentally or not) gave to the guest, and which a really quick comedian immediately used to humorous effect, to talk about their own weight and then move forward into a monologue that wound up mocking industry executives for their tips on how to lose weight (i.e journalling about your smoothie).

  9. Anne says:

taylor looked ridiculous in her panty-dress. ridiculous. I think Amy’s just pointing out how absurd it was that we CAN SEE HER CROTCH.

also, i may be wrong, but I get the impression Swift is a bit . . . arrogant. Anyone else? I don’t think “skinny-shaming” is really an issue here.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, if something was being mocked, I thought she was making fun of the dress. The dress looked stupid, especially as she was walking up the stage to get the Grammy. I mean, she’s literally holding the curtains to the dress wide open for the underpants to be seen, which looked stupid and hilarious at the same time.

  10. Nikole says:

The ~friend~ is Bridget Everett, who is a sex goddess. I recommend googling her, if you’re not at work.

    • magnolia says:

Nikole – Bridgett Everett is the BOMB! I missed a chance to see her when she came to my town on tour. Damn I regret it 🙂

That said, Bridgett’s and Amy’s squad looks way more fun than Taylor’s.

  11. missmerry says:

if your jokes depend on you being bigger than another girl, and you dragging that other girl into your joke just so the joke exists…that’s kinda lame.

I remember being told ‘you’re skinny, like, anorexic skinny’ once and it hurt my feelings. I wasn’t anorexic and it made me look in the mirror and say ‘who are they seeing? i don’t see ‘anorexic thin’ in the mirror’

I believe that skinny-shaming isn’t as big of a problem as fat-shaming, but it’s still not cool to talk about somebody just because they’re thin. Especially when people say ‘oh you’re so thin you can wear anything’…yeah…I disagree and it makes you think ‘wait, i’m thin, i should like what i see in the mirror according to other people, but I don’t’

that causes issues with some people.

  12. Loo says:

Amy Schumer is a self deprecating comedian, comedians make jokes all of the time. I honestly do not see it as a shot at Taylor Swift. What Kayne said in his rap was a crude misogynistic shot at Taylor Swift, this is just a dumb joke.

Honestly I am as PC as all get out and proud of it but I think edgy jokes from comedians should not always be policed the way they are now or days. It’s not like she called Swift a skinny bitch or not a real woman. I do wish us non skinny women would stop using that disgusting language when talking about thin women.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah, I really hear ya and I do agree with your overall sentiment.

I don’t really have an issue with what she said (certainly not calling it un-PC or whatever) beyond the fact that as an observer, she strikes me as very insecure. It’s disappointing because prior to this, I thought she was a good role-model for body acceptance. Now she strikes me as someone who is always comparing herself to others, which is never healthy.

      • I Choose Me says:

Now she strikes me as someone who is always comparing herself to others, which is never healthy.

She does this all the time and that is why I can’t with her.

      • T.Fanty says:

She used to be really interesting, but now she’s very one-note. We get it, Amy, you feel like a cow in LA, and it’s funny because you’re normal. Now get some new jokes.

    • paranormalgirl says:

In my opinion, it wasn’t an “edgy” joke in the least. She name checked another woman, thus pulling her into her little world of self deprecation.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I don’t really understand the outrage. It was a self depreciating joke, using someone who has the idea feature as a comparison to herself who doesn’t.

It would be like referencing someone who has rock hard abs while making a joke about “check out my 6-pack!”, when you don’t have a 6-pack.

She might be insecure, but I’ll give her that. She’s human, and it’s there lurking in most people in different ways.

  13. taboo says:

Amy’s comments about her own weight were funnier, or more believable as self-deprecating, when she was heavier. She’s lost quite a bit of weight. Did you see TRAINWRECK? She was in great shape, and danced in front of cheerleaders, not looking much bigger than them.
The same can be said of Jennifer Lawrence. Her comments about her body and food might have been charming or refreshing before she transformed into an enviable glamazon. But now when J-Law or Amy make fun of their own bodies or talk about how much they like to eat, it seems like they are fishing for compliments…. or just mean to women who really do have weight issues — it’s like high school girls going up to heavier girls and calling themselves fat.

  14. lizzie says:

when beyonce wears hot pants and a weave she is heavily criticized. b/c you know – you simply can’t be a feminist when your ass is out and you can’t support black lives matter if you don’t have an afro.

meanwhile – taylor swift wears underwear and a shiny towel to a major awards show and makes one veiled speech for an award she didn’t deserve about a black man tweeting about her and is a feminist hero.

the national news covers beyonce’s “controversial” performance but comedienne isn’t allowed to make a joke about herself in reference to taylor swift? please. back and read the thread about beyonce at the superbowl and then check yourselves before commenting on how mean amy schumer is for body shaming.

  15. Otaku fairy says:

I think she was trying to make fun of the thigh gap thing, but still, dragging Taylor Swift and her body type into it wasn’t necessary.

  16. frivolity says:

“… Taylor’s body type”? The thigh gap is part of Taylor’s body type? Didn’t she lose a significant amount of weight when she got famous? I hardly think hers is a normal body type.

    • Kitten says:

Nope. She was ALWAYS very thin. You’ve really never seen a thin person with small build? I don’t mean that sarcastically…I’m just surprised as it’s not uncommon.

      • frivolity says:

There are definitely “naturally” thin people, but the majority of the little people in Hollywood achieve their smallness through very unhealthy means. Also, I could swear that Taylor was larger when she first came on the scene, but I could easily be wrong …

      • Kitten says:

Yes I agree that happens all too often. I can think of 6 or 7 actresses off the top of my head who dropped a ton of weight after they became a household name.

But Taylor isn’t one of them–she’s always been built like a beanstalk. It’ll catch up with her eventually. She’s still in her twenties and has that metabolism thing going for her.

      • OriginalMeh says:

She was naturally slim and lanky because of her height, but she got even skinnier as she got more famous. I can’t believe people think this is her healthy, natural weight.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Naw, she’s gotten gaunt skinny as of late. It started right around the time that the VS model said she wasn’t VS material and she started model collecting and pap strolling to the gym. We’re supposed to believe that her ‘metabolism’ is getting faster with age I guess.

      • perplexed says:

There are pictures where she looked chubby as a pre-teen (her only “awkward” phase?), but I’m not sure if her mom advised her as she was growing up to watch her weight if she wanted to become a successful pop star. She does have height as an advantage, so I’m not sure if she just naturally lost weight once she had huge spurt. I don’t know if she looks thinner than she did at 19, but she does look like she’s put on more muscle and tone in the arms and shoulder area. I think she looks less “soft” than she used to, even in the face, despite being only 25. That hair-cut doesn’t help either. I think some of her physical changes are the result of more gruelling work-outs, which make her body look fit, but the face slightly more severe.

  17. Fiorella says:

I like both of them and I hope Taylor is not sensitive enough to find this offensive.
It’s true that making comments about people’s bodies and appearances is never a good idea socially. (And that should include to pregnant pple! ) But comedians should have a different standard I suppose. meaning of the joke: Taylor wore a “dress” that is perhaps only cute on thin people and showed her long thin legs. This is amy having fun while knowing she won’t ever have those legs. Ugh I guess I can’t really explain the joke but I feel like I understand it and I can’t find an insult or attack in the joke. Maybe only the insult of Taylor (perhaps) being conceited and acting boastful (by wearing that thing) about her thigh gap.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

This. She says she made a joke at her own expense which could effectively be viewed as exalting the appearance of the person to whom she compared herself to. Let’s not go cray cray with the false outrage over Taylor Swift, Delicate Daffodil Who Is Eternally Above Using Others’ Names To Keep Her Name In the Spotlight.

  18. Nancy says:

She is a comedian, geez. I have to admit it does get tiring when the thin girls say they’re fat, the pretty ones say they were so ugly in high school and this and that. The fans of these girls get manic for no reason. Ms. Swift is a big girl and doesn’t need to fight with anyone else. Aren’t Katy and Kanye enough! No big deal. ****someone above said Amy was jealous and I just laughed….why must that always be the answer, she’s goofing on her not dreaming of being her….Lord

  19. Micki says:

I still don’t get that joke.

  20. shannon` says:

Meh. It was a joke at her own expense, I don’t see it as a big deal personally. I’ve had thigh gap and I’ve had thunder thighs both at times. That’s what comedians do; they’re not generally known for their sensitivity. I doubt Taylor or Kelly lost sleep over it. If they did, they’re in the wrong business.

  21. Gabrielle says:

Honestly, I’m not trying to be rude but I doubt Taylor Swift was offended by that, nor was Kelly Rippa. I’ve always been thin and have had people call me anorexic at times and I just chalked it up to jealousy, considered it a borderline compliment, and moved on.
The again, I guess I’m a product of my environment.

  22. Halvin Carris says:

Meh, she made a joke that missed the mark with the GP. Nothing less, nothing more. It’s not like we weren’t thinking something along the same lines about that dress. She just made her comments public. I’m MORE curious about her second post with the short bob wig and the “beard”!!!! Especially with all the rumors about Taylor’s sexuality and her DJ BF being nothing but a prop. Was Amy trying to tell us something? Hmmmmm?

  23. prissa says:

She really does resemble a cabbage patch doll.

  24. vanessa says:

amy is just so lame, i don’t have words to describe her. she is only successful because of PC.

  25. Goldmama says:

Thick or thin, gapped or round. We are all women. I am just reading this amazing books and looking at all of this I am just thinking we all need our wild woman. Ladies let’s unite, no matter what our personalities or bodytipes are. Here are the two books. “women who run with the wolves” by clarissa pinkola estes and the other book is “excuse me your life is waiting” by Lynn grabhorn.
We all need to find our roots and all need to love ourselves more. I hope those books will help you as much as they helped me as well as Amy and Taylor.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Wolves is a truly awesome and transformative book. I remember reading it as a teenager.

  26. shewolf says:

I cant stand her but I cant stand when a (stupid) joke is turned into a philosophical rant more.

  27. Sarah01 says:

Don’t find her funny, you can tell she’s joking. Now we live in the world where you can’t even be funny without stating your being funny.
Thigh gap is not exclusive to skinny girls, I’m slim not skinny my hips are wide and butt stick out which naturally cause a thigh gap. It’s a skelatal thing.
    Love your body it’s yours.

  28. Sez says:

You guys.. political correctness gone mad! ALL
comedians self deprecate! I took that Amy was making a joke at her own expense in the context of comparing her legs to Taylor’s. Let’s face it, in Hollywood Taylor has the more desired figure so I’m not sure where shaming comes in? I mean is self deprecation not allowed now because if you are bigger than someone else it insults them??. I also think it would be body shaming if Amy was referencing someone who had spoken about being chronically underweight or anorexic, or referencing a pap photo of an emaciated looking on a beach eg Nicole Ritchie way back when. As it stands, she was referencing a photo of Taylor Swift in a skirt designed to show off her thigh gap!! If Taylor had any issues with her thigh gap she would not be flaunting it at the Grammys! Does anyone actually think that Taylor doesn’t want to look like that?? I’d kill for those long legs btw… and you know I’d prob make a self deprecating comment about my shorter, chubbier legs in comparison.. but that would be considered body shaming I guess.

  29. Regina Phelange says:

This site is called celebitchy. Lol these comments!

    • SnarkySnarkers says:

I think its because of the super PC tone that is always set by the writers. There are certain topics that get handled with kid gloves here and female body image is one of them. Don’t get me wrong, some of the articles are hysterical but some I roll my eyes at the way such care is taken so as not to offend the delicate senses of a lot of the readers here.

  30. Veronica says:

I saw it as more of a joke about the industry’s expectations of women’s bodies than Taylor herself. Taylor wouldn’t have shown up to the Grammy’s in that dress if she didn’t have great legs, yeah? And the thigh gap is a big enough “thing” in Hollywood that they will actually photoshop into celebrity photos, so it’s something a celebrity woman would consider before putting something like that on. Taylor is what the industry tells us we should look like. Amy is closer to the reality.

  31. perplexed says:

If she actually was making fun of Taylor, which I’m not sure if she was, I would have thought she was making fun of the dress, not the body. That dress with the split through the middle to expose the underpants looks stupid. I mean, really, it does.

I didn’t think she was skinny shaming so much as shaming the need to share your underpants with the world on the red carpet. That dress is really easy to mock, no matter how great-looking a body Taylor has.

  32. Sez says:

Yes to all of the above. I also think it’s hilarious that this site (which I love!!) is so against so called body shaming in any form but it’s whole premise is to rip people’s personalities apart daily?!! I mean Taylor is called a mean girl and ripped to shreds here regularly but say she has a thigh gap and it’s nearly a criminal offence! Don’t get me wrong I enjoy the stories here and I agree with the slant in nearly everything but why is it ok to pour snark on Kate Middleton’s whole being but not to call her skinny?! It’s a weird take on the world.

  33. Caz says:

I don’t find anything interesting, genuine nor appealing about Amy. A one-gag comedienne.

  34. JJ says:

Is this for real that people don’t get the joke? Let’s spell it out: There is a beauty “thing” right now where having a thigh gap means you have a great body. Taylor clearly has a thigh gap, and her thigh gap pictures were all over the place after the Grammies. Amy clearly does not have any kind of thigh gap. So that comment was clearly self-deprecating humor on Amy’s part, posting a picture of herself supposedly smugly showing how much better her thigh gap is than Taylor’s.

It is not insulting to Taylor. It is a joke about Amy based on the assumption that Taylor Swift has the perfect body thigh gap that is in demand now.

  35. Sez says:

    This. Yes.
