Cate Blanchett in Versace at the Costume Guild Awards: fabulous or fug?

Here are some photos from last night’s Costume Designers Guild Awards, which always seems like a fun night. Every year, actors and actresses come out to celebrate the costume designers who make them look amazing in films. And considering the 1950s drama Carol and the exquisite costumes in that film, Cate Blanchett came out to celebrate. Cate wore this stunning Atelier Versace which I HOPE HOPE HOPE is a preview of what we’ll see from her at the Oscars. Please let her gown be awesome. PLEASE. I always love it when Cate does slinky –she never looks trashy, always sophisticated.

Here’s Emily Ratajkowski in Andrew Gn. I’m sort of over ruffles, tiers and fringe, and this is an unholy alliance of all of that. Also: she should have worn her hair up.

Krysten Ritter in in Lela Rose… this is an absolutely terrible thing to do to a pale brunette. When will this nude-pantyhose-fabric die already?

Kate Beckinsale in Hamel. She looks lovely, but she looks the same as always. I would love to see her mix it up a bit with some more avant-garde styles.

Kiernan Shipka in McQueen. I love her, I love this dress on her, everything is perfect.

Jennifer Jason Leigh in Rodarte. I actually hope this is a preview of her Oscar look too, because this is maybe my favorite thing she’s worn during this whole Oscar season.

Cate looks amazing, except for the huge lump by her armpit, clearing showing this dress is tight as hell up top!

    • smee says:

Right! Are those part of her breasts? Must be uncomfortable. The dress is stunning on her. Is the silver part a necklace or part of the dress?

      • KB says:

It’s not really part of the breast but it becomes apparent when you’re wearing a really structured bra or a dress like hers. It should be tailored all the way up under her arm. I get it sometimes too and explained it more down thread. For people who gain weight in the chest/upper arm region, it can be a problem.

    • tegteg says:

Good lord, now I’m mesmerized by the lump. Also, it looks like there is a tear or something at the top of the slit…or maybe that’s just breathing room?

    • ell says:

she often gets that lump, they really need to start tailoring her dresses better. clearly there’s something wrong in the way it fits.

    • LadyMTL says:

Yeah, it definitely seems too tight across the chest / breasts. Still, I love the look overall, I think she’s just stunning.

    • mp says:

Isn’t some of that armpit lump normal for an aging woman though? I mean, I know we’re used to seeing some actresses of that age (Rene Zellwegger or Naomi Watts) down to almost zero body fat but I have no doubt that Sophia Loren or Helen Mirren have that armpit lump. I kind of like it – makes her human….stars, they’re just like us! and all that.

      • KB says:

I have to watch for that armpit thing too and I’m only 28. I have a naturally large bust, and apparently the same hormones or whatever that cause weight gain in your chest also cause it in your upper arms and I’m guessing that armpit area too. It’s incredibly difficult for me to tone my upper arms. Scarlett Johansson, when not in Marvel shape, is a good example of this.

Cate being so tall it isn’t so apparent, but she does have a larger bust considering how little fat she has elsewhere on her body. A dress like that needs to come all the way up under her arm. It’s not a great cut for anyone who has fat in that area.

      • Sarah says:

Oh god – that’s a normal thing I see on women every day! I’ve had that since I was a teenager – it’s not for ageing women or fat women. It’s regular!

  2. D says:

With the risk of sounding old and boring…I love that Kiernan dresses appropriate for her age.

  3. GingerCrunch says:

JJL all of a sudden looks like an 80 year old and that dress doesn’t help! WHAT happened to her???

  4. Neelyo says:

Blanchett’s outfit looks very similar to something she’s worn before. I can’t remember exactly what or when but I recall a similar dress except with a teal necklace or collar at the neck. This one is okay but the other was better.

  5. Deedee says:

    Wowzers, Cate!

  6. GlimmerBunny says:

Cate looks amazing! I can’t wait to see what she’ll wear to the Oscars, especially after the baby pink Globes barf.

  7. Wentworth Miller says:

Something about her reminds me of Blake Lively.

  8. Lucy2 says:

With the exception of Emily’s and Krysten’s I like all of these. The top is too tight on Cate but she looks amazing.
    Kiernan always dresses so well.

  9. Lucy says:

    Cate’s look is trascendental.

  10. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I feel like the collar of Cate’s dress and the material of the dress do not belong together.

  11. LadyElenor says:

    Cate – Flawless
Emily – i love the fringe/tiered bottom but the top looks like it belongs on a diff dress. i agree abt the hair tho, it needed to be up.
    Krysten – fire your stylist….
    Kate – smokin hot
    Kiernan – love it
    JJL – le sigh

  12. Anguishedcorn says:

Every single time I see Cate, I start singing the Cure’s “Why Can’t I Be You?” She is everlastingly amazing.

  13. OGBklynGirl says:

I like Ratatouille’s dress (even if it is slightly bipolar), but I too am ready for brunettes to start wearing color again.
The material and necklace part of Kate’s dress is killin it, but WTF on the fit?! Is that boob/arm fat squishing out?

  14. Camille says:

In these pics Cate is reminding me facially of an older Blake Lively.

  15. KiddVicious says:

I love the fringe dress! I want one. I’ve been trying to figure out an appropriate place for me to wear one. When I used to watch Dances with the Stars I would get so excited when the dancers wore fringe skirts. LOL

Kristen does need a new stylist, but everyone else looks gorgeous.
