VP Joe Biden will attend the Oscars, he’s introducing Lady Gaga’s performance

Do you think VP Joe Biden sort of regrets not running this time around? I mean, this was his last chance. Regardless of who wins what in 2016, Biden will never run for office again. So… I hope he has fun with his last months of public life. And it sounds like he’s going to try to have some fun. Ol’ Joe Biden is coming to the Oscars this year. He wants to fist-bump Matty D and bro-out with Leo D. He wants to drink champagne out of Charlotte Rampling’s belly button. He wants to have an open-mic gaffe with Chris Rock. No, no, no. In all seriousness, Vice President Biden is coming to the Oscars so he can introduce Lady Gaga for her performance of “Til It Happens To You,” the song from The Hunting Ground about college rape. Biden has been involved with legislation and advocacy work around issues of sexual assault and violence against women for decades. Those are some of his signature issues, so it makes sense that he would come out to support this documentary and Lady Gaga.

The Obama administration is making an Oscar comeback this weekend. Vice President Joe Biden will appear as a presenter at Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles, three years after first lady Michelle Obama announced the best-picture winner via satellite.

He will introduce Lady Gaga’s performance of her original song nominee ‘Til It Happens to You from The Hunting Ground, a documentary about campus sexual assault.

“Vice President Biden is going to the Academy Awards for primarily one reason, which is to raise awareness of an issue on which he is quite passionate, which is stopping campus sexual assault,” said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest. “The vice president has done a lot of important work to lead the effort to end violence against women and end campus sexual assault. This is an opportunity for him to stand at a rather high-profile podium, when millions of people across the country and across the world will be watching.”

He said Biden’s remarks would be “relatively brief,” and that he was not expected to address the controversy over the lack of diversity in Oscar nominations.

It’s widely believed that Gaga has the edge in the Best Song category, and Biden’s presence reinforces that. I mean, would Biden show up if he didn’t believe Gaga would win? That being said… I hope she loses. The cause is worthy and raising awareness is a great thing. But please, I really hope Gaga doesn’t win the Oscar. It can go to Sam Smith or The Weeknd or whomever. Just not Gaga. Not this year. She’s the same old Gaga, she’s just been repackaged and resold and she’ll be so smug if she wins.

PS… I hope Biden sticks around for the Vanity Fair party. I predict lots of uncomfortable shoulder-rubs and awkward nuzzles for Brie Larson and Michael Fassbender.

Is Gaga wearing the the same type gloves Amal Clooney has but in red?

  2. minx says:

    I’m a big Joe fan.
Despite all of the tragedies he’s endured–and there have been many–he stays upbeat.

+1 I wish he would’ve run for this election, It would’ve been interesting & I’m sure he would be the favorite candidate. I understand why he didn’t, with the tragedy of his son being so recent & needing time but he would’ve made a fine president.

didn’t Joe Biden successfully lobbied politicians on Obama’s behalf many an occasion and successfully too?
the Oscar voters are surely patsy in his hands. expect Gaga, Oscar Winner.

  4. Luxe says:

That’s so great that he’s an advocate, but I don’t understand why he would want to attend #oscarssowhite.

Met Joe years ago while lobbying for the anti-violence against women act. He’s the best politician we have. It’s sad he’s leaving the “arena” but he did a great job and American women (and women throughout the world) will be losing a friend when he leaves office.

LOVE me some Joe. Too bad he decided not to run…he’d have had my vote. He and his family have been through so much that it was probably the best decision for them.

  6. Bridget says:

Okay, how much are Gaga’s people paying for this? Are they calling in every favor they have to make her happen again this year?

  7. Insomniac says:

I love Joe Biden. Wish he wasn’t there for Gaga, but oh well. I am guessing that the Onion is going to have a ball with this news — their fake Biden stories are hilarious. Even the real Biden likes them.

I live in Maryland, near the Delaware border. The Bidens are, for the most part, universally loved and revered here. Really disappointed when he said he was retiring from the circus, but totally understandable.

Back in 2006 I was on an Amtrak going from DC to Philly. I sat in the front row, and an Amtrak employee asked me to move for an older man who had his leg in a cast. I jumped up and smiled and exchanged pleasantries with the guy, who seemed to know everyone on the train, and everyone seemed to like him! I realized later that it was then-senator Biden heading home for the weekend.

HA! idc about Gaga but Uncle Joe Has my heart! i say this with zero snark

  11. Lucy says:

I don’t know much about him as I’m not from the USA, but I really felt for him after his sons’ passing. As for Gaga, I highly doubt she’ll win. For me, it’ll go to either Sam or Abel (The Weeknd).

  12. Grant says:

Sorry, but Gaga won me over with the Sound of Music medley and the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. I hope she wins and she can be as smug about it as she likes.

And I hope it’s not Sam Smith because that song is DREADFUL.

    • Ozzy says:

I desperately hope not. This is a woman who worked with R kelly and Terry Richardson in a disgusting music video. And now she’s up for an oscar for a song about raped women? If she cared so much she would never have worked with those people, especially for that gross video. She should gain absolutely nothing from this. She clearly isn’t genuine in her support for raped women and she had almost nothing to dowith writing the song.

If it was just Dianne Warren I would have liked to see the song win, but Gags doesn’t deserve it and her hypocrisy should not be rewarded.

      • Bridget says:

Not to mention, Gaga shouldn’t even be nominated as she provided no substantial contribution to writing that song.

  13. Dorky says:

Ironic, because he’s always given me the creeps and seems like a lecherous old man. Sorry, he just gives off that vibe. *shrug*

  14. jesb says:

I don’t know the song she is nominated for but i totally agree with kaiser, you perfectly articulated what’s been bugging me about gaga lately. It’s the smugness, even before the GG win she just really seemed to be smelling her own farts as of late. And it’s really annoying.

  15. msd says:

I think it’s awful that they stopped two of the nominees from performing in the song category. The “time constraints” excuse is total garbage. This also means they’ve cut the only trans nominee, as well as (probably) the only Asian woman. So much for diversity. Stay classy AMPAS. Gaga and Sam Smith and The Weekend should have stood up for their fellow artists but they didn’t.
