Did Leo DiCaprio give the middle finger to his haters at the Oscars?

I have to wonder if Leonardo DiCaprio has spent the last 24-36 hours taking stock. I mean, what did it cost him to win an Oscar? Millions of dollars, easily. Several months of neediness and discomfort. The ability to laugh at himself. And that’s it. Was it worth it? Probably. Because now he’s Leonardo DiCaprio, Oscar Winner. And when he got on stage to accept his Oscar, he might have flipped the bird to all of his haters. While I don’t doubt that Leo would gladly tell most of the Academy to suck it, I don’t actually think he was giving the middle finger to his haters. I think he just holds thick cardstock envelopes with his middle finger.

Personally, I thought the sweetest thing to come out of Leo’s Oscar win was this short clip of Leo watching his Oscar plaque being engraved and mounted on the base of his Oscar. He looks so happy and child-like here, and he even shows some humility – “Do you do this every year? I wouldn’t know.” He also seemed surprised that he was given a pamphlet on taking care of his Oscar.

After the Oscars were over, Leo got down to some serious partying. By all accounts, by the time Leo rolled up to the Vanity Fair party, he was being treated like a conquering hero. Every single celebrity wanted to come by and pay their respects to Leo. My favorite part? Leo’s BFF Tobey Maguire confessing that he was really worried for Leo’s Oscar chances after Mark Rylance won:

Fresh off the red carpet, Ben Affleck made a beeline for [Leo and Chris Rock] and was greeted warmly with a hug from Rock and a kiss on the cheek from Leo. Affleck and DiCaprio held hands as they chatted while Maguire explained nearby that an early upset in the best-supporting-actor category had him nervous for DiCaprio. Experts were so certain both Sylvester Stallone and DiCaprio would win that when Stallone lost to Mark Rylance, Maguire said, he got anxious for his friend.

[From Vanity Fair]

Yes, truly, the P-ssy Posse would have been devastated if Leo had not won. The DiCaprio Kingdom would have been in a fragile state. Thankfully, Leo won and he finally got to unclench after months and months of holding it in.

  2. GlimmerBunny says:

If he did, who can blame him? He should be on his fifth win by now, and The Academy haven’t even nominated him for some of his best roles.

    • Nik says:

What were the four previous performances that he should’ve won?

Even in his best work there was always someone better that year.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

It was Tommy Lee Jones (the Fugitive), Jamie Foxx (Ray), Forest Whitaker (the last of Scotland), & Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).

      • AmyB says:

He was never nominated for The Departed and he definitely should have been. Apparently he did not want to campaign for the Supporting Role (I agree with that — he and Matt Damon were the leads in that movie), and he got nominated instead for Blood Diamond as Lead Actor that year. He should have won for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and The Departed was one of his best roles, in my opinion.

      • GlimmerBunny says:

Matthew McConaughey was in NO way better than him. I think his best performances which he wasn’t nominated for were: Shutter Island, Django Unchained, The Departed and The Great Gatsby.

I think he seserved the win for Gildert Grape and The Aviator too, but I admit the other performers those years were deserving of their awards as well.

      • V4Real says:

@GlimmerBunny I agree. He should have won over Matt M and I love Matt but his performance was not better than Leo’s. He definitely should have been nominated for The Departed and The Great Gatsby. And as much as I adore Tommy Lee Jones his performance in The Fugitive was not award worthy.

      • Jess says:

Nah. Chiwetel ejiofor was robbed by Matt m. Leo was not even up there that year
The truly great transcendent performance Leo gave was in what’s eating Gilbert grape. I dont know who was nominated in that year, but that’s his greatest performance. None of the other performance you mention have blown my socks off the way he did in that movie.

To be honest there are a whole bunch of actors just as good or better who never won oscars. I don’t know why Leo’s fans feels like him not winning every year is the greatest injustice in Oscar history.

      • V4Real says:

@Jess Of course we know there are good actors who have never won Oscars but it’s nice to see when the Academy finally get it right and give the award to one of those good actors and that’s Leo. I’m not even a huge fan of the man but I have seen all of his films mentioned in this post and he is good in all of them. And you don’t have to be a fan of Leo to recognize that he has some serious talent. Do I think Chiwetel is a good actor, yes. Do I think he was robbed of an Oscar, no. Between those three performances that year Leo, Matt and Chiwetel, I would chose Leo every time. Chiwetel would be second.

      • Anon says:

No there weren’t better performances. Different people, different taste. He was robbed more than once imo. I also would salute my haters by flipping the bird. Americans should be proud of an actor like him as the invasion of European actors won’t stop. Quality wise European actors are going to dominate the next years imo. But of course I could be wrong….

      • isabelle says:

Think Matt Damon was much better than Leo in The Departed, as well as Nicholson. Even in his best film, he didn’t deserve a win or a nomination.

      • Luxe says:

No, not for Gilbert Grape. He was incredible, but I’m pretty sure that’s the year that Ralph Fiennes was nominated for Schindler’s List. That’s the best performance I think I’ve ever seen on film. I can’t believe he didn’t win.

      • Valois says:

But even if Jones hadn’t won for The Fugitive, I still think there was someone worthier than Leo that year- ralph Fiennes.

    • Ariadne says:

He should have won for the Aviator.

It’s not the Oscar upset that bothers me most – Judy Dench should have won for Mrs Brown and they clearly knew it, which is why they threw her best supporting a year later for an eight minute performance.

    • SJO says:

Yes I am so sad that the head of the Pssy Posse had to wait so long for his accolades. He is a more than decent actor, but what a jerk. Like seriously who cares.

  3. Nancy says:

Yeah right he threw the bird at the entire auditorium that gave him a standing O. This was his moment to shine and he did so graciously and with humor. I sincerely believe he doesn’t give two f’s about the “haters”……everyone has them, but he’s a fairly handsome, extremely wealthy man who actually cares about the planet we live on. Grats Leo, you deserved the Oscar…..

    • JaneS says:

But doesn’t care enough not to use private jets and yachts et al. LOL at the idea that he cares about the planet. When he starts living like there’s a real climate crisis – and not contributing to it with his enormous footprint – I’ll start believing.

      • Mimz says:

I think it’s a bit hypocritical to expect him to go green with everything when – to my knowledge – there aren’t any planes that don’t pollute or boats that don’t pollute. Must he be filthy rich and just give all his money to charity, go by a “manual” boat (sorry cant remember the name in english) from country to country, and walk everywhere to convince you otherwise? The fact that he lives large yet tries to compensate his footprint, is more than most of us can say, really.

He’s putting his money where his mouth is, and that’s enough for me.

      • Fallon says:

I’m pretty sure I’ve read before that he purchases carbon offsets or whatever those things are to negate the private planes.

      • Kitten says:

Sigh. Everything Mimz, Nancy, and V4Real said. I don’t know why I click on these posts. I totally support the snarking on Leo’s dating life but I really don’t understand how people can question his acting abilities or his commitment to acting.

        I’m super-happy for him.

        That is all.

    • Decorative Item says:

As far are his concern for the environment goes, he talks the talk but absolutely does not walk the walk.

      • Hellohello says:

The fact that he has to take private jets to satisfy his film contracts doesn’t negate all he does for this planet. Do you want him to walk to Beijing for a film appearance? Seriously.

      • V4Real says:

        Well answer these questions.

Didn’t he go green with his houses? Didn’t he purchase hybrid cars? Didn’t he produce some documentaries about the climate? Didn’t he earn the Clinton Global Citizen Award? Didn’t he march with Ed Norton and Mark Ruffalo in New York City’s People’s Climate March? Didn’t the United Nations named DiCaprio a UN Peace Messenger, because he was helping to promote global action on climate change? Didn’t he pledge 7 million to help protect the ocean in 2014? Didn’t in 2015 he announced plans to build an ego-friendly resort? Didn’t he also become a partner in the Wildlife Funds to protect Tigers in Napal?

I don’t know about you but it sounds as if he is talking the talk and walking the walk. And of course we all do things that are damaging the environments does that mean we don’t care about it. I bet Leo is doing more than any of us on this post for the environment. Just because you drive a non-hybrid car does that mean you don’t care about the environment? Leo is not 100% steering away from things that causes harm to the environment but at least he’s doing things that could possibly balance it out if everyone else jumped on board and did their part.

      • Nancy says:

V4R: Again you answer with facts instead of emotions. You are a smart one, and I always read your posts, as I’m guaranteed an education on things I am not always aware of. Keep shutting down the negativity, you’re a pro!

      • V4Real says:

I think I left out The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. And that was supposed to say eco-friendly resort. But ego-friendly works too. 🙂

      • Sara says:

        Well said.

      • Magnoliarose says:

I am no Leo fan and find his acting very good sometimes and a few times just ok: Hoover. I’m not a fan of his dating and posse shenanigans but his dedication to environmental issues is real. Some celebs jumped on the bandwagon for PR but not him. His work dictates he travel the way he does and do some of the less green things he does but he does try and many do nothing when they could.

    • fiona says:

LOL Nancy, he really couldn’t give a crap about the environment. It was all a ploy to get his oscar. He’s a hypocrite.

      • V4Real says:

So he’s been on this ploy since 1998, the year he started The Leo DiCaprio Foundation focused on the environment.

Well let’s just see if all this cease now that he has his Oscar.

    • I Choose Me says:

Well said Nancy, Mimz and V4Real. I’m one who’s glad he won. I mean I get some of the criticism he gets on here but not the over the top hate. He’s a terrific actor and he does put his money where his mouth is when it comes to the environment.

      • Nancy says:

ICM: Thanks. For some reason there are a few actors/actresses who get blasted whatever the story is. Leo could cure cancer and some on here would ask why it took so long. I don’t dare name the others so as not to give the “haters”….God I hate that term, more ammunition. In general though, most posters are fair decent people. Hear that V4Real!

      • Kitten says:

YES. You are always a “+1” for me but today you’re really on a roll, I Choose.

  4. Betti says:

I don’t think he did but given that he’s a frat boy at heart I wouldn’t be surprised. He now has an Oscar but it won’t stop the thirst, he’ll want more. Maybe not for acting as I can see him move behind the camera, go down the George Clooney route. He’s ambitious!

    • tracking says:

Exactly. I don’t think he did it, but he is immature enough to. Right after lecturing us about the environment before hopping on his private jet to party on a yacht in Ibiza.

      • Naya says:

This mans lack of self awareness is baffling. I mean most celebrities are clueless but he is by far the most clueless. He is the equivalent of an animal activist who wears furs to her fancy cocktail parties.

  5. Marny says:

Yay, Leo! I love all the pictures of everyone happily and heartily congratulating him- no shade. He’s been one of my favorite actors since Growing Pains, This Boys Life, Basketball Diaries, etc.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I didn’t get the happy, childlike vibe from watching that video. Still smug to me, but I’m not a fan.

    • Tiffany says:

I saw it as nervous excitement. The way he was taping his hands on the counter, he was trying to contain it.

      • Plina says:

I’m with you Tiffany! I thought that was a cute and sincere moment. He was simply excited and happy and you can tell. Loved when he asked ‘I have to maintain it?’ REALLY cute!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I may be seeing what I’m expecting to see.

    • Wilma says:

I was hoping he would not win because of the thirst, but I do think he looks very happy here and a bit nervous and I like that.

    • Chris says:

I’m not getting childlike vibe either. I’m definitely seeing nervousness though. I think it’s more “Person used to calling the shots feels a bit like a fish out of water.”

    • SM says:

I’m not seeing child like happyness too. But I am not seeing smug too. I’m seeing exhaused. Like being Leo must be exhausing. in his own head more than anything else

  7. Lin says:

Maybe not to the haters but to the academy for taking so long. That he should have won it a long time ago does not mean he wasn’t the best in his category this year still. I know he’s not y’all’s favourite person but I love him very much, womanizer, modelizer and all. let him be people

  8. Eggland's worst says:

The body language and facial expressions on the 4 winners photo is priceless.

  9. Eleonor says:

I don’t think he is giving the finger, and if he is proud and happy I cannot blame him, he should have won 20 years ago for What’s Eating Gilbert, he gave an hell of a performance in that movie.

  10. platypus says:

Aww. He looks so genuinely happy and at peace.

  11. Allison says:

I was thrilled that he won, and he does look so happy there. Good for him!

  12. Tiffany says:

I see what he did this year as putting in the work to win it. He did the interviews, extended his PR, attended the events to network. The studio but money into the film for it to win awards. He listened and did what was advised and it paid off. Annoying, sure. But he put in the work and it paid off.

  13. smee says:

“I wouldn’t know.” Because he obviously thinks he should possess multiple Oscars by now bc he’s such great actor. He seems like a smug jerk, to me. Def a one-note actor now. He barely had any lines in Da Bear and that prob. helped him “win”. His smoking and dranking have cost him his looks (altho I never found him attractive – too baby-faced).

  14. Longhairdontcare says:

Y’all complain that Hardy didn’t campaign and whoever else but Leo does and hes an asshole? Damned if you do damned if you dont is real with this guy.

    • V4Real says:

+1. They say the thirst is strong with Leo but I think it’s just the dislike that’s strong with some people.

Seriously what has Leo ever did or said bad about anyone? You dislike the man because he wants an Oscar and because of his dating habits? Do you prefer he gets married when he’s probably not the marrying type which would lead to him cheating on his wife? If he’s not into long term commitments does that make him a bad guy? I know he likes them young but at least they are out of their teens now that he is in his 40’s. If the man was talking crap about other actors, stumbling out of clubs drunk, putting all his personal business out there to get you to like him like some celebs do, and my favorite smacking babies and kicking puppies then you might have a reason to dislike him. But what has he really done besides remained professional and doing his job which is acting. Oh and he’s also an environmentalist who puts his money and time where his mouth is.

      • Kate says:

He’s a fairly gross guy. I don’t give a crap who he dates so long as they’re legal, but the rest of his personal life is at best pathetic. After winning the Oscar he met up with his 40-something friends (most of whom he essentially pays to spend time with him, since they don’t have real jobs) who call themselves the Wolf Pack, and they spent the night howling and chanted Wolf Pack over and over.

Stories about his Wolf Pack (formerly Pussy Posse) have always been nasty. They make Justin Beiber look like an upstanding person. They’re misogynistic, entitled, rude, and spectacularly sycophantic. Tobey Maguires just a straight up sociopath. Who you spend time with says a lot about a person, and Leo has always chosen to surround himself with really gross losers.

To be behaving like a particularly immature and ignorant frat guy in your early 20’s is one thing, but to have gotten to 40 and not grown one bit…

    • Kitten says:

I was just thinking this exact same thing. I seriously can’t believe that people are pissed about Leo campaigning.

The comments on the last few DiCaprio threads of people saying that they hope he loses just so they can laugh at him struck me as oddly personal and vindictive.

And YES to everything V4Real said. It’s nice to see rational people around here..

      • Josefina says:

I’m not mad he campaigned. It was the tone of it that bothered me – it was a pity party. It was the victimizing tone of it, which was only heightened by all the stans who went along with it. Not just him – the whole marketing team of The Revenant who tried to convince me filming that 140M Hollywood production was worse than Syria.

Alicia Vikander campaigned even harder, but she didn’t bother me. She never tried to hide her thirst for the Oscar. She striked me as an ambitious young woman who had confidence in her skills and wanted things. Leo’s campaign was dripping with entitlement and victimization.

And what’s so serious about wanting him to lose anyway? He’s a rich Hollywood star and the Oscar is just a trophy. Win or lose, he will still live a much more comfortable and priviledged life than all of us. And, you know, people may actually think he didn’t deserve it for that performance because they have a different opinion?

      • MacScore says:

May I add my voice to those who are “happy for Leo and appreciative of his position regarding the environment”? So glad to see some rational comments here. Leo’s solid body of work over the years is testimony to his work ethic; many of us have really enjoyed and been very moved by his films. I don’t give a toss what he does in his private life, as long as they’re both consenting adults it’s their choice. Congratulations, Leo – can’t wait for your next projects – be it in front of or behind the camera.

      • Kitten says:

@Josefina-Sure yeah it’s ok if you don’t think he deserved to win for Revenant–except those weren’t the comments I was referring to. There’s a difference of opinion that is well-expressed and thoughtful then there’s just weird mean-spirited comments like “I hope he loses because, ha-ha” which is just odd and pretty juvenile TBH.

“He’s a rich Hollywood star and the Oscar is just a trophy.”

So if it’s “just a trophy” then I supposed you’re not concerned about the #Oscarssowhite controversy? I mean, why are people complaining at all when it’s “just a trophy”, amirite?
Everybody who works in film dreams about winning an Oscar, Josefina. Everybody. And anybody who denies that is straight-up lying. Leo is not alone here.

And while I think the Oscars are a sham, I still understand that objectively, they’re the highest honor you can get in HWood. Receiving an Oscar is enough of a distinction that they actually RE-release Oscar-nominated movies just based on the fact that they can now market them as “Oscar-nominated”.

I know you’re trying to make a point, but you’re really off-base if you think the Oscars aren’t an important form of acknowledgement and validation for the film industry. Don’t let your hate for Leo cloud your judgment.

    • AmyB says:

It seems to me that campaigning is unfortunately part of the Oscar game. Actors that don’t play the game right, usually end of empty handed. Not saying I agree with it (I don’t) but that is what is required. Leo’s campaign was hardly over the top — the man has a solid, consistent body of work and is a remarkable actor. He deserved the win period. But many other actors do as well — Glenn Close, Samuel L. Jackson, Amy Adams, etc. I really don’t get the hate for Leo but hey I guess the haters are gonna hate 😉

  15. KittenFarts says:

I’m not really a Leo fan but this win was way over due. Anyone who works very hard at something & succeeds, should be recongnized. He has perfected his craft & takes pride in it as well. Aside from it being Leo, any individual who performs the way he has in MOST of his movies deserves a win.
It surprises me that people don’t see that.

    • Tiffany says:

He and Alicia are ambitious and are willing to put in the work. I know they are not everyone’s cup of tea here, but I cannot throw shade at people who want to be the best in their field.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hear, hear! I don’t consider myself a Leo fan girl but damn if all the vitriol being flung his way isn’t making me #TeamLeo.

  16. Insomniac says:

I doubt that finger was on purpose, but if he was flipping the haters off, that would be awesome and hilarious.

And I had no idea Oscars came with care pamphlets. Not that I’m ever going to be in a position to know that.

  17. Fan says:

I can’t believe there are haters for Leo. Everybody loves him. Glad to see his family.

    • Josefina says:

People don’t hate him. He had the most invasive, victimizing and ridiculous campaign of the year and his non-fans are understandably sick of it. If it happened to Anne Hathaway I don’t see why Leo is off-limits.

      • Kitten says:

FWIW, I defended AnnE as well.

      • Mimz says:

So I guess it would be more acceptable to campaign for years – YEARS – talking about vomit, farts and peeing in sinks, because she’s “so relatable ” right? Well, I don’t pee in sinks, I don’t *talk* about farts or vomits to get a raise. I for one started off liking JLaw, but before the 1st oscar I was done with her. There’s being “self-deprecating” and just working with shock value.
He did interviews, they weren’t that many, and honestly, he should want it, he did a good campaign and still partied like he enjoys to do – just a little more low-key.

  18. msd says:

Be careful what you wish for … lots of actors’ careers go downhill after they win an Oscar. People stop being invested in what you can do next because you’ve reached the peak. Although maybe he doesn’t care about that too much anymore. I’m always half-expecting him to give up acting.

    • V4Real says:

Don’t l tell that to Cate Blanchet, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep. Unlike Adrien Brody, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Helen Hunt Leo has had a long standing fantastic career that I think will march on.

  19. Crumpet says:

He should have won SOMEthing for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. I haven’t seen him in anything since that came even close to that performance.

  20. DenG says:

Any actors who nurture their Artistry and The Craft are the Crafty Artists who will win.

  21. Lucy says:

It was just they way he was holding the envelope. Personally I’m happy for him. Say what you will about him, but no one can deny he’s hard working and talented.

  22. Josefina says:

… Haters at the Academy? Eh, not really. He’s 41 and has 5 nominations with 1 win. That’s a very good record. Gary Oldman was acting before Leo learnt to walk and he’s been nominated once.

I don’t think Leo’s a bad actor, even less a bad person. But I don’t think he’s all of that either (sue me) and come on, you seriously can’t understand why we’re so tired of him after all he campaigned?! You guys complain about JLaw and Taylor Swift being overexposed but the moment people start getting fatigued of the Leo pity party we’re all haters blind to his talent. K. Sounds fair.

  23. Christin says:

The finger thing is likely nonsense. I just picked up a large item plus a paper, and my middle finger ended up being the one my brain apparently chose for the paper. Possibly because it’s typically longer, and the index is usually the one we use to grasp heavier things.

  24. JFresh says:

    Brie carries herself so well.

    P.S. Love Leo forever!!!!!!!

    • frank says:

I think he deserved the Oscar didn’t even watch the film but watched all the other and he should have won at least twice. I actually noticed that this was one of the few times that even the other people in the category were elated and happy to see Leo win instead of themselves.

      • Anon says:

What was Fassbender nominated for? I watched the movie and I am just confused. The movie was bad. And Fassbender seems to prefer playing d****…. What exactly was so special regarding his performance? Same goes for Winslet. I am disappointed. Really. Haven’t watched the Danish Girl so far but it will follow. Leo, congrats! Deserved it.

  25. Breakfast Margaritas says:

His face is beautiful from the side profile. He is just beginning to get a bit of grizzled handsomeness. Full frontal face is still frat bro.

  26. iheartgossip says:

Come on now. He looks like he’s holding multiple items. We’ve all done it. But, carry on.

  27. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I just watched a snippet of his speech again, loved it. But but but….I think he had a wad of chewing tobacco in the bottom left corner of his mouth. Or does he have a slight speech problem?

    • Tiffany says:

I do not know if he chews but it always seemed like he was talking out of the side of his mouth.

  28. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Kaiser – thanks for posting that engraving clip. He does look super happy 🙂
Have you seen the pic of him starting to dig into the Girl Scout cookies? Tongue slightly out, lol. It’s cute

  29. Di says:

I dont know why, but every move and comment he makes screams “entitled douch” to me… :s

  30. Margo S. says:

I know he’s in the leader of the pussy posse, but I love him. He’s so cute. And tobey worrying about him!! Love it. Swoon! I like that he’s not fake and in the typical hollywood groups. He’s in his own crew. The same group of guys since the 90’s. That’s neat.
