Michael Phelps’ new Under Armour commercial: redemption or overkill?

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is making quite a splash in his latest ad for Under Armour’s “Rule Yourself” campaign. The idea behind the campaign, besides selling their apparel, is that “you are the sum of your training”. The campaign has enlisted some heavy hitters – American Ballet Theater’s principle ballerina Misty Copeland, golfer Jordan Spieth, Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors (Strength in Numbers!), Tom Brady, soccer player Memphis Depay and the US Women’s gymnastic team. With Michael’s ad, they are broadening the message to include, “It’s what you do in the dark that puts you in the light.” Phelps, who is engaged to Nicole Johnson and expecting a son in the next few months, is shown swimming laps in a darkened pool and putting in some serious gym workouts. The ad also shows him sitting in an ice bath and undergoing cupping, the process of mobilizing blood flow to promote healing by suctioning (with heat, in this case) localized spots on the body. The overall feel of the ad is fairly forceful:

Michael Phelps’ training regimen is extensive, brutal and really, really impressive. The 22-time Olympic medalist is featured in a 90-second Under Armour ad that shows just how much work the swimming legend puts in to stay in tip-top shape.

Phelps, 30, doesn’t just swim to get competition ready. In the spot, the ripped athlete sweats it out at the gym, shivers in a freezing tub of ice, swims several laps in the pool and eat carbs, carbs and more carbs.

Phelps’ new ad is part of the “Rule Yourself” campaign, which promotes Under Armour’s apparel, but also encourages athletes to dig deep.

“It’s about what our young athletes do in the dark. That means this idea of maybe you can’t go to the party, maybe you can’t hang out, maybe you can’t do the things that everyday kids are doing, but you’re sacrificing those moments to really step into the light, to really get that win and that championship moment that you really deserve,” she said at the time.

Here’s the ad:

Gah, watching him swim is like fine performance art. The feel of Phelps’ ad is more haunting than the ones prior, which focused more on training being manifold. Phelps’ message is particularly poignant because Phelps has not been the squeaky clean Wheaties boy we expect our Olympians to be. Before his record breaking 2008 Olympic run, he already had one DUI under his belt. After Bejing, Phelps was photographed smoking pot, which cost him sponsors in addition to begin penalized by USA Swimming. Another DUI in 2014 got him suspended. As he trains for what might be his last Olympics in Rio, Phelps appears committed to rehabilitating himself and his career. I really hope so because two DUIs is completely unacceptable for anyone.

When Phelps and Nicole saw the ad, they both teared up. Nicole said, “… it’s knowing what’s sacrificed and being able to see it on the screen, it’s cool… “. I get what Nicole is saying. We hold our Olympians to another set of rules. They are our heroes and we expect them to always be those heroes. I know I don’t consider what or how much they have to sacrifice to meet those ideals.

Now for the superficial – OMG does he look hot! I am not usually a fan of male facial hair but he’s like a wet, American Christian Bale/Liam Hemsworth hybrid. I really wanted to watch this ad for all of the emotion it is trying to convey but I kept hitting pause to stare at his back.

    22 Olympic medals.
I know I’ve heard it before, but it still blows my mind every time someone mentions how much he’s achieved.
    Chapeau, Michael 👏

    • Tonya says:

a lot of people seems to forget his great accomplishment… i have a lot of respect for him and hope he takes it all again 🙂

      • Carol says:

He is an amazing swimmer, and I hope he goes out on top in Rio. That ad is really powerful.

    • Lozface says:

Nothing or no one comes close to what he’s achieved. I’m an Australian and we love our swimmers but even i watch in awe at what he’s achieved and hope he is successful in Rio. Hopefully he leaves some gold for our fellas though!

I swam as a kid and what I did was horrendously hard at my level, 10 pool sessions per week, plus gym and dry land work and I was only good in my home state haha!

He would sacrifice so much to be where he is – he should be respected for that.

Damn Michael. Back at it again with those Under Armour ads.

The beard is making all the difference for me. Very nice!

  4. Rhiley says:

I know a few dolphins who wish they could swim like Mike.

I’ve always been a fan. Even through the mistakes and issues which I’m glad he rebounded from. He’s human but this just puts into light just how hard being an Olympian truly is. It’s amazing our country doesn’t have as much support for these guys that other countries do.

Rio is his last hurrah and much like London I’ll be watching with baited breath and sadness as a swimmer myself.

  6. Kir says:

As along time competitive swimmer (not Olympic level lol) I like the ad and I’m rooting for him.

    • Esmom says:

Me, too. My kids are now swimmers, too, and I have to show this to them. My older son, who has an unbelievable work ethic, will be especially inspired, I think.

    • Tonya says:

me too he is a great athlete

  7. Anon33 says:

As a Baltimore girl I support this whole heartedly.

  8. Tig says:

When he first broke big, I remember reading an interview with his then(?still current?) coach who essentially said that for swimming, weight training was a waste of time, time away from the pool was time you never get back. Maybe the approach has to change once you’re no longer 16/18.

He’s an amazing swimmer. Hope his transition after his Olympic career is a smooth one.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

I’ve nev heard that reasoning before. We used to weight train for at least an hour everyday when I was a swimmer.

  9. NeoCleo says:

Keep the beard. It’s an improvement.

  10. kri says:

Tbh, I don’t care about the weed. But the DUI’s…oh man. No. You are taking someone else’s life into your hands when you drink and drive. Please don’t. As for his accomplishments in his sport-amazing. And great ad. Cut loose all you want, Michael-just grab a cab next time.

  11. littlemissnaughty says:

I may cry when the beard needs to go for Rio. I can’t watch this with sound until after work but yeah, whoever created this ad is a genius.

  12. Chrissy says:

That is an amazing ad! I’ll be pulling for him huge in the next Olympics. What a swimmer!

  13. J-Who says:

I am mesmerized by this commercial. Especially the power coming from his body when he turns around and pushes off the side really fast ….awesome.

  14. Pants says:

I’ve always liked him despite the issues in his personal life. Or maybe even because of them. No one is perfect, it’s nice to see someone who can still find great success and who seems determined to rectify their mistakes.

  15. Lucy says:

I still remember that insane woman who claimed to be the first intersex person he’d had a relationship with a couple years ago. She wouldn’t stop talking about how in love they were. Anyways, glad to see he’s doing well!!! Hope he was finally able to find some peace.

  16. Miss M says:

What a powerful ad! I hope he does well in Rio!

  17. Anare says:

Ad is gorgeous, well done Under Armor. I’m usually not fan of facial hair but he looks really hot here. Wow!
