Simon Cowell says he was also astonished at Susan Boyle’s talent

Simon Cowell was on the Late Show with Craig Ferguson last night and gave quite a few memorable quotes. When asked what he thought of Idol emcee Ryan Seacrest Cowell didn’t mince words and compared him to a small yappy dog trying to get your attention:

Compares Ryan Seacrest to a “sausage dog”
“We have a relationship like… I’m a german shepherd, right? Ryan is like a sausage dog. You know how like the little dogs always try and get the attention of the bigger dog? It chews at the bottom of your leg, or gets on your leg?… ‘Oh just get off Ryan.’ That is my relationship… he’s kind of cute, but annoying.”

Ferguson also brought up YouTube sensation Susan Boyle. Some pundits have accused Cowell of knowing about Boyle’s phenomenal talent ahead of her performance on the show, saying that there’s no way he couldn’t have known about her. Cowell said that he had no idea, though, and he described it as just as much as a surprise to him:

On Susan Boyle: thought she would last 5 seconds
“We were in Glasgow and we weren’t having a great day… When we doing the auditions I don’t know who’s ever going to come on and on this show we have the audience behind us. This little old lady came out… she said she was 47. She looked about 80 to be honest with you…

“And the audience were laughing with her. I was like ‘oh this is going to last 5 seconds let’s get on with it.’ And then she started to sing and it was just one of those special special auditions.”

Cowell admitted he was lying when he said after her performance that he knew all along that she would be able to sing. When Ferguson asked who has the movie rights to Boyle’s story, Cowell raised his hand and said he was thinking of it.

Cowell confirms that couple offered to have him judge them having sex
As for the story that a couple wanted to have him judge them having sex, Cowell said that was true. He supposedly met the couple in a restaurant and they offered him $150,000 to go home with them. Cowell looked at the camera and said “If you’re watching, with inflation it’s now 250. I’m available.”

On Kara on the panel: Paula times five
“I like Kara… the only problem is you can imagine… Paula used to talk a lot last year. Now you’ve got Paula times five. We don’t actually get to say anything. Literally just sit back with the monologues these two come up with.”

Ferguson told Simon he doesn’t think he’s likely to ever get married because “they all talk like that.”

Cowell is definitely not a modern guy with high regard for women. When he judged Susan Boyle he called her a “little minx tiger” as if she had to have some kind of sexual appeal to go along with such talent. It’s like there was such a disconnect for him between her appearance and singing ability that the only way he could reconcile it was to make her sexy in his mind. He’s got a lot of personality, though, and you can see how the guy became so successful despite his smugness. He certainly gives a good interview.

In a few months everyone will be bored with Susan Boyle, shit i am already over her!

  2. geronimo says:

I don’t believe he didn’t know about Susan’s voice in advance…may not have actually heard her but I reckon he was briefed about it. Not that it matters.

Re the ‘little minx’ comment, saw that more as him acknowledging that she was a dark horse? In the mischievous sense, rather than the sexy sense? Don’t think he meant it in a demeaning way.

  3. Because I Say So says:

I agree with Geronimo. Simon’s never been shy about saying what he means, so if he meant to disparage her physically and/or make her out to be some sexual object, there’s easily another way he could have done so.

I took his comment to be one of surprise and just a bit cheeky, but not intentionally insulting.

I believe Simon called Boyle a “little tiger”, not a minx – I don’t think he meant it sexually, but that she’s not quite what she appeared to be, that her talent made her more formidable than how she presented herself. The comment just didn’t seem sexual in nature, IMO, although I can see how some might interpret it that way.

  5. Chiara says:

Susan Boyle was a product of good marketing, enjoyable to listen to … her 15 minutes is nearly up … no hits in her future.

  6. KateNonymous says:

I thought it was pretty obvious he was joking when he said he knew.

  7. ! says:

“a product of good marketing”? Um, what are you smoking? Pass it to the left! Susan Boyle has never been marketed in one single way!

That was a great interview, made me laugh several times. Gotta give credit to Ferguson, he’s great with the guests.

When Simon made the tiger comment, he had this look on his face as though he was just impressed by her confidence and talent, like a good surprise. In that business, it would be hard not to sexualize everything given that he probably has women coming on to him at every turn and with image being so intertwined with the entertainment industry.

At least he’s very genuine in his cynicism about whether he thinks someone’s product is crap or not. 🙂

But I still think that Piers Morgan was much more politely british and that his dinner invitation was a very sweet gesture. It came across as fairly sincere and it may seem like a naive thought, but I would so love to just see something really special and lovely happen to someone who deserves it and isn’t just taking off their clothes to run around naked with a fake body to get attention. (Example: The Entertainment page of the Huffington Post has Richard Branson and some naked anorexic supermodel chick kite surfing. Great.)

I’d like to see some actual reality in a reality show that makes a person feel good for a change.

I thought the ‘little tiger’ comment was charming and not at all trying to ‘sex’ her up.

He was blatantly joking when he said he ‘knew’ she was going to be great.

Whatever, she’s a great find for him and you can see the pound and dollar signs in his eyes!

this guy is always talking about how much paula and the other girl talk… quite frankly, they all talk the same amount… so why is he always bitching? he sounds like more of a whiny bitch than the two he’s calling out…

To!, are you bloody retarded? She’s been nothing bigged up by the media since the moment she appeared on TV. They, and every other sucker like you, have turned her into a damn God. It’s a vicious cycle, the more you read in the news that’s she’s great and should, or will, win, the more you think she’s good and will win, and the more you think that she’s good and should win, the more you media publishes these stories. I myself says she’s nothing that she’s made out to be. She not that good at all. She’s just a lonely, repulsive woman that’s come out of the back end of beyond with a bit of talent, and this my friends is the only reason she’s gone anywhere at all. If she wasn’t so damn weird and so insanely ugly, then people will have passed her off as just an average singer, but no, because she went on looking like she’d fell down the ugly tree and hit every branch along the way, everybody thought she was going to be terrible, but when she turned out to be QUITE good, everybody threw away the part of their brain that decides what i is they like and fell completely in love with the damn woman. If she would have been good looking and young, and not weird at all, people would have though “You know what, she’s probably going to be quite good”, and then after she sang, you wouldn’t have been surprised at all, and she wouldn’t have had any of this unnecessary attention. The way the show set her up wasn’t fair either, like they also do, they edited it to make her look the way they wanted her to look, absolutely awful, just to emphasise the reaction after she sang. It’s extremely unfair on other contestants, who aren’t being bigged up by the media at all. For example, right after the show showing Diversity and Susan going through to the final, ITV news immediately did an article about Susan going through, but didn’t mention Diversity at all. Why not? Are they not good enough to be mentioned along side the great Susan Boyle that can get through to the final, along with 9 other bloody different acts that are obviously just not good at all in comparison. Speaking of which, why aren’t these other acts as good as hers? Well obviously they just didn’t look terrible enough, or weren’t made to look terrible enough. The truth is though, most of them are better than she is, and nearly all of them put a lot more work and effort into what they do and have achieved. I really think she shouldn’t win and that she isn’t that good
