Gwen Stefani’s NYC weekend: SNL, space pants and fishnet body stockings

Gwen Stefani, still promoting “This is What the Truth Feels Like” took the Big Apple by storm this weekend, and even had time to pull off an April Fool’s gag. I hate April Fool’s Day with a passion, it’s such a pointless “holiday.” Gwen marked the occasion by instagramming a ultrasound of a baby with the caption, “It’s a girl.” Fans of Gwen and beau Blake Shelton went gaga, until they realized she was just kidding. The prank backfired a bit, as some fans didn’t think the stunt was funny at all. Some of the comments she received from her followers included, “Used to be a fan, but you should know better than to make such an insensitive joke.” and “What about your fans that have infertility trouble or have suffered pregnancy losses?” It was just a dumb prank, I’m sure she probably didn’t mean any harm, it was just kind of lame. But so is April Fool’s Day.

Also on Friday, Gwen made an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert wearing a very WTF – and revealing – outfit. In a look that I’m sure was making a statement, that statement to me was “I overslept and packed really fast, hopefully I can make this work,” Gwen paired a black bra with a huge collar necklace, high-waisted fishnet stockings, camo capris and a long coat. Uhhh…okay. Say something nice: I like the shoes.

On Saturday, Gwen hit 30 Rock, where she was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, and took part in the most…unusual…sketch of the night with host Peter Dinklage. If you missed it, please enjoy “Space Pants”.

Well, that was weird, although Peter Dinklage’s wig and song stylings are kind of magical, don’t you agree? One person who certainly enjoyed the sketch was Gwen’s significant other, Blake Shelton. After the sketch, he tweeted, “Hey @gwenstefani… Please wear space pants when you get back home!!! Ha!!!!” I think, in the “fair is fair” category, Blake needs to wear that blond wig. And space pants, of course.

Gwen performed 2 songs from her new album on the show, one about her ex, Gavin Rossdale, “Misery,” and one about Blake, the insanely catchy “Make Me Like You.” Blake also tweeted his delight over Gwen’s performance, but the song he called out was a bit of a surprise. “Wow… @gwenstefani performance of ‘misery’.. Brilliant,” he posted.

Gwen posted photos on Instagram with SNL’s Pete Davidson and show alum Adam Sandler. And, yes, she also posted pics of the now infamous space shorts.

At the SNL after party, Gwen once again brought the WTF to NYC, in a Sheer top and colorful tweed skirt with sheer panels and a random ruffle. In a surprise move, Gwen swapped her trademark red lipstick with a more muted shade and paired her outfit with classic patent leather Christian Louboutin pumps – the only thing I dug about this ensemble.

I get it, she’s a fashionista, but the only thing I’ve even remotely liked that she’s worn this past weekend were the space shorts. I do think that Gwen has now hit every single promotional outlet, so maybe she and Blake could head off to Oklahoma for a while now? Please?

Misery isn’t about her Gavin. Misery is about being hot for her new man and she’s in misery waiting for him to come over. It’s the good kind of misery, not the bad kind of misery about her ex.

They were in Oklahoma at his place for spring vacation with her kids and her brother and his kids. She’ll be around for a while. LOL

Her performances were cute on SNL.

Blake’s performance on the music awards was fantastic.

    • Roxy says:

Yes, thanks for stating Misery is about Blake, not Gavin. It’s about love, not heartbreak. It’s easy for people to assume she’s writing about her ex without actually listening to the song/taking the time to read the lyrics.

  2. Zapp Brannigan says:

Space pants? Must resist joke about Uranus.

  3. JenB says:

The spacepants sketch was so random and weird…but then became really funny in its absurdness. Peter Dinklage was awesome. Sign me up for some spacepants.

    • Jenns says:

      Peter Dinklage totally sold it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Peter Dinklage slayed me in Space Pants. The skit itself was nothing until he came out. They kept cutting back to those non-funny guys and I just wanted more Space Pants. I think I stopped breathing at one point because I was laughing so hard

    • doofus says:

He was so wonderfully “SERIOUS” about it, it was great.

the Naked and Afraid Celebrity Edition was the best skit, I think.

      • Giddy says:

That Naked and Afraid Celebrity Edition was great! Leslie Jones has become my favorite cast member.

      • doofus says:

I don’t watch very often, but I happened to be up and home, so I did…

…and I agree, completely. she’s hilarious. she could have a career like Melissa McCarthy…her comedic delivery is so so good.

  4. Juliezzz says:

    Always loved Gwen

Is this relationship with Blake real? People seem to say they are happy together but something about him rubs me the wrong way. I don’t believe cheaters suddenly change.

  5. barca4ever says:

I hate pregnancy jokes for April Fools. It is an important life event and that kind of joke is a serious trigger for people who suffer from infertility or who have lost babies. She can prank her partner with a fake pregnancy if she wants but faking it for the public is so desperate and dumb.

    • Jayna says:

She did it in response to the covers on rag mags saying Gwen is 46 and having Blake’s miracle baby. One said she’s having a baby girl. It was obvious snark about the absurd rag mag stories.

      • Lex says:

I’m sure she’s so tortured by the media. This is what she wanted, unlimited press with Blake, so I highly doubt she’s fed up with the constant marriage/baby rumors. Still a ridiculous and insensitive joke.

      • Roxy says:

I agree with Jayna. Gwen was making a joke off of the constant rumors she is pregnant at her age. She not saying “she’s so tortured by the media,” simply playing off of the story line they have created for her and Blake. I’m pretty sure she has had a miscarriage herself several years ago. It was a joke ladies. Wow

    • Tifygodess24 says:

See I don’t get this one bit. Someone else’s fertility or lack there of shouldn’t impact anyone else to that point. There are things in life we have to learn to deal with and not get the “feels” all the time and be offended. For example I was born with a heart condition, so I get that it stinks when you want something so badly but can’t have it because your body doesn’t work as it should. And yes people do take everyday things for granted. But I don’t get offended when people joke or do things I can’t. That’s someone else’s life, and It’s not all ABOUT ME – just like this joke wasn’t about anyone else but her. So why make it about you? Why act like It’s a personal attack? I don’t know just seems like our society has gone a bit overboard with the “feels”. It stinks of course and doesn’t take away from anyone else’s situation or sadness but it’s also life and I don’t expect people to censor themselves because I might get upset. Seems silly.

      • Steph says:

Tify- You are awesome! I love how you articulated that. We all just need skin that is a tad thicker.

  6. Maggie says:

I thought her performance was awful. I’m not a big fan of her fashion either but she seems like a nice person.

  7. Mia V. says:

    This outfit is BANANAS, B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

  8. paolanqar says:

oh my gaaaahhhhh that face is scary.
I was about to say that her hands look nice without those talons in the first pic…. but the tip of her nails is black so it tricked my eyes.
    nevermind.

  9. JenniferJustice says:

I say that outfit was definitely planned – that’s totally her. Weird to us, but par for the course for Gwen. I love her. I can’t help it.

  10. Mabel says:

That was great. I’m going to have that song in my head all day now, “Space pants…” HA!

  11. velourazure says:

I know she’s got an album to shill but I’m all Gwenned-out. It’s too much and she looks riduculous. Her SNL songs were painful to watch given how little she can move her face at this point.

    • Mixtape says:

Yes! I’ve always loved Gwen but am burned out by this endless media tour. When will celebrities learn that nobody is immune to the curse of overexposure?

    • Redgrl says:

      Velour azure – yes! Agreed.

  12. Kate says:

I saw her in the morning shows today and I really had a hard time believing she is in her late 40s. She really seemed like a twenty something girl who wants to be taken seriously.

    • Juliezzz says:

She has spoilt her face imo
She looks so artificial now…you can see all the Botox and fillers she had had
She was so pretty before. Such a shame these Hollywood women refuse to age.

  13. miasys says:

The April fool’s prank was just not cool. I don’t think you have to suppress your voice to avoid offending everyone, but it struck me as immature. Full disclosure though, i know people who struggle with infertility & I’m not a fan of her in general.

  14. DIrty Martini says:

April Fools jokes are about as 2nd grade as you can get, Having said that I am OVER this whole “trigger alert” mentality. I’m truly sorry that you have (whatever) issue in your life, We all deal with something …..and the rest of the world goes on living. Grow thicker skin and realize that it isn’t about you. And being constantly hurt and offended by others’ comments that really aren’t about you is about as mature as April Fools jokes. It’s tiresome and exhausting to listen to whiners making what isn’t about them…..about them.

Now having said THAT…I REALLY don’t get this woman, She dresses like a Gaga-lite-wannabe, she seems immature for her age, and why is she trying so hard of late?
