Duchess Kate in a mod, retro Tory Birch in Bhutan: surprisingly fabulous?

150644PCN_Bhutan002

Here are some photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Day 5 of their India-Bhutan tour. On Day 5, they arrived in Bhutan, and Kate wore that yellow Emilia Wickstead for the arrival. Then Kate changed into a long skirt and caped blouse for the day’s activities, and then the Cambridges went back to their hotel. They changed into their evening wear and set out for an “informal” dinner with the King and Queen of Bhutan.

For this dinner, Kate wore her hair down, which… sure. I’m not going to bitch about it too much because even though she’s wearing a long, formal-ish dress, she’s not going to a super-formal evening event. I mean, William isn’t even wearing a tie! She can wear her hair down. Kate’s dress is Tory Burch and it costs £1,100. I don’t know, you guys… I sort of like it? I like that it feels vintagey and mod. I like that Kate made the orange in the dress pop by pairing it with an orange shawl too. All in all, I’m totally fine with this.

I’m also including some photos from Thursday’s day activities with the Bhutan king and queen. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t do commentary on each photo, but I can’t help myself. I call this photo “Kate smiling at fruit” and now I can’t stop laughing.

150644PCN_Bhutan009

I think Kate just heard the translation for “the cup from which you just drank is where we keep the national supply of LSD.”

This laugh looks really natural. You’re absolutely a peasant and a hater if you think this gaiety looks forced and uncomfortable.

You know who looks much better in those dinner party photos? William. Looks like he just had a roll in the hay and has a little swagger to his walk.

    • PinaColada says:

+1 I thought he looked surprisingly nice in the pics without the tie. My eyes actually went to him for like the first time ever! Lol

    • Sarah(too) says:

If your wife is wearing a long dress (which I LOVE!), then put on a damn tie, Wills.

    • dawnchild says:

yes, I totally thought that when I saw him! Afternoon delight…lol!

    • CynicalCeleste says:

The mismatched navy blues though… no, no, no
I must say, I think Kate looks great in both these outfits.

  2. Emily says:

I love this look! Although to me it looks so very un-Kate-like.

    • Ravensdaughter says:

She finally stepped up with a more festive look with both outfits. Hooray!
The smile is genuine-Bhutan is one of the happiest nations in the world (really).
I would have enjoyed seeing what the Dragon King and his lovely wife were wearing. I’ve seen
pics of him-in Britain, I think- in a Saville Row type suit and he looks strange.

      • Trashaddict says:

You have to wonder if she was sick in India. She didn’t look well. Is Bhutan a cooler climate?

  3. Gee says:

She’s very cute when she’s being herself. She loves sports and it shows.

Also, love the dress but I’m way more into some of her outfits than most people.

    • Locke Lamora says:

There is a picture of her smirking at William attempting archery and is hilarious.

  4. Alix says:

Love the outfit. Looks like something Megan would’ve worn on Mad Men!

Also, refreshing to see W&K actually enjoying parts of their visit instead of looking like kids suffering through a too-long class field trip…

The Dragon King and Queen of Bhutan are gorgeous, period.

  5. Bettyrose says:

I like it. It makes me think of a 70s pool party in the Hollywood Hills. Oh, like in the LA episodes of Mad Men. Which feels more authentic for these two than the Eat, Pray, Love I’m finding my true self in the East looks she’s been wearing all week.

    • Vava says:

The dress is growing on me. I initially didn’t like it because the beadwork at the neck was red and not orange. (I like things to match.) But yeah, she looks good in this. William needs an underwear overhaul, just wait until you see the photos from today’s hike.

I wish we could have seen what the King and Queen wore to the dinner!

      The laughing photos……….geez……..no…………..

    • KK2 says:

Haha, yes. And I love how you described both looks. Very apt. I like this dress- it’s still sister wife conservative and all, but it’s interesting and unexpected. Best thing she’s worn so far in my opinion.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

oh me too, I like her outfits a lot and I would wear them happily, Bhutan or not.

  6. HollyG says:

I love everything about this look–the dress, the shawl, the sandals, the sun-kissed makeup. Especially the dress with the orange shawl.

Did Kate slip on her nude hiking boots and go up to Tigers Nest today? I’ve lost track of how many days remain on their trip.

  7. Hudson Girl says:

I LOVE the comments on each photo! It would be great if you could do that more often? At least on the Royal posts?

  8. Splinter says:

The first picture with the bow is so unfortunate. Not only there is the crazy laugh but her waist looks twice the size of her arm – scary proportions.

  9. Eleonor says:

Like it. And I like she is wearing beatiful earrings.
And the long purple skirt: was it too difficult to tailor it in a way it would have not opened?
I am in love with the chemise.

  10. sensible says:

Off topic I know, but if we are going to give Kate crap about her skirts flying up, then can I just have a word about Will’s underpants situation? He needs to wear a brief to keep his meat and two veg all neat and contained, he is obviously a boxer man, but I really don’t need to know that he dresses to the left in every pair of pants he wears. If Kate gets in trouble for showing her knickers or lack of them, then he needs an underpant makeover.

    • Kaiser says:

Agreed, I’m really tired of his bulge situation, it’s as attention-seeking as Kate’s Marilyn Moments.

      • Hudson Girl says:

I agree. Partly, his issue is that he hikes up his pants too high. They need to sit lower so the rise in his pants gives his package some room. Maybe he really does like the attention? Weird couple.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Meat and 2 veg? Thanks for that. : )

Celebitchy enriches my vocabulary nearly daily.

      • bluhare says:

I’ve also heard it referred to sausage and potatoes too.

      • serious says:

You are welcome, I married an Englishman, its what they call them for a laugh.

      • antipodean says:

The royal todger situation has been tragic for a long time. I can only think that he is more than aware of it, and won’t change his underwear situation just to please the peasants, very public school of him, and what a jolly wheez, dontcha know. The crown jewels are on display for all to see, or you might say his frank and beans! I think I seem to know entirely too much about this situation than is entirely good for me.

    • Magnoliarose says:

I am sick and tired of him parading his Princely package all over the place. He’s not sexy, hot, desirable or attractive in the least. Most of it is a result of his boring personality. He has to be doing this on purpose.

    • Breakfast Margaritas says:

I’m so glad someone else has noticed that the royal package is ALWAYS on display! Shouldn’t Charles talk with him about finding appropriate pants? He is tall so maybe it’s that the crotch in his favorite slim cut pants are too short? I never see this on President Obama or other dashing world figures.

    • Beth says:

Oh my stars!! It’s 2:00 a.m. and I’m having a nice quiet evening reading the wardrobe reviews and all 3 of my huge dogs are/were sound asleep until I just read the meat and 2 veggie quote!! Now I can’t stop laughing and the dogs think I’m totally insane! I have tears in my eyes! 😆😂😀😄😂😂😂😂😂

  11. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I love it. She looks really pretty in those colors and her shoes are reasonable and her hair even looks nice. Very elegant but laid back.

  12. Betti says:

See this is the Kate that the public would like to see more of – she’s engaged, relaxed and having fun while at an engagement. Nothing wrong with that.

I like the Tory Birch dress, the colours suit her – her Buhtan fashion game is, in my opinion, better than her India fashion parade, thou am bored of the theme dressing.

  13. Goats on the Roof says:

I actually don’t like it! From the print, to the wrap, to the earrings and the hair, it’s just SO busy. I usually like what she wears (when she’s not flashing The Royal Beave, that is), but this just isn’t doing it for me.

    • Hudson Girl says:

I’m with you. But, then again I can’t stand orange and brown together- it’s too 70’s for me. I would be curious to see the dress in a different color palette, and styled a little differently.

      • Olenna says:

Agree, it looks like the 70’s to me, but I do like the silhouette. I can see Peggy Lipton wearing this and looking fabulous.

  14. byland says:

Okay, I never comment in these threads (just read them, because hi, hilarity) but she doesn’t look terrible for once. I could do with less hair curling, but that’s a minor quibble. And she resisted the urge to pair it with those nude court shoes. Glory be!

  15. mellie says:

I love the Tory Burch dress, you can almost never go wrong with anything in her line. Kate looks awesome!

  16. kcarp says:

The last picture. I am innocently scrolling, I see that and giggle like a 15 year old boy. Oh my, that’s one for the mantle.

  17. missmerry says:

i know she’s dressing this way to kinda fit into the place she’s visiting, but i think her outfits and the prints on them have been gorgeous.

that cape/top, to die for. and she does look likes she genuinely enjoying herself, so that’s also nice to see.

  18. rosie says:

I am still mad that Kate cancelled the St Patrick’s day event but I feel these photos are a bit unfair. When you watch the videos of Kate, she is really engaging, friendly and tries hard to put people at ease. The pictures that the papers and sites use are the worse they can find. Not taking into account their recent behaviour, I am really liking them, and particular Kate on this trip

  19. potatopie says:

There is a picture, on dailymail.com, of Drew Barrymore wearing the same dress and in all honesty, it does not look as good on her as it does on Kate – mainly because Kate is so thin. I wondered, yesterday, when I saw the picture of Kate in this dress what the “average” person would look like in it – now I know. Just not as “catching” looking.

    • Pandy says:

Was just coming on to comment about Drew. She looked fugly in it especially when you have Kate to compare with. Bad choice for Drew. I love the cape and skirt as well. According to the DM she had the skirt material sourced from Bhutan and made up for her. I loved the combo. These two outfits and the “cheap” peasant dress are terrific.

  20. Sharon Lea says:

These are my two most favorite outfits from the whole trip, so thank you Kaiser! Love the Tory design, color etc. The cape is unique.

  21. OSTONE says:

    Love Tory Burch!

  22. bucketbot says:

“Kate Smiling at fruit” is the funniest thing I’ve heard all day. The more I look at it the more I feel like laughing. Its so bl–dy dumb. Oh kate, never change. Worth a pin to my lmao board.

    • Tough Cookie says:

I love Kate Smiling at Fruit almost as much as I love Kate with Helicopter Hair. (That is to say: Very Much!!)

  23. JudyK says:

    TRULY Fab!

  24. Lucy says:

I must say, I love it! And while it does look good on her, it’d look regal on someone like Cate Blanchett. William doesn’t look bad either.

  25. kri says:

That Kate With Fruit thing is gonna be a great meme. re the dress-I like it. I am surprised at myself.

  26. Cee says:

William looks underdressed next to her. I want to see what the Queen Consort wore.

  27. anne_000 says:

The DM reported that this Birch dress had mid-thigh-high slits. They’re on both sides of the dress. The DM has a photo of the front flap up and showing leg on each side as well as how high these slits were.

I dunno, but since this was a dinner with the more conservatively-dressed Bhutanese, I think she should have worn something more akin to the conservative style her hosts and other guests would have worn, just out of respect for the unwritten dress code expected for this work-related event.

Unless there were other women there wearing mid-thigh-high slits too, she shouldn’t have been the only one there wearing such a revealing dress. I just think that out of respect to her dinner companions, she should have tried to fit in rather than stand out and play to the cameras and her exhibitionist tendencies.

I wouldn’t have minded this dress so much to a dinner party with a crowd of people who dress more provocatively, like she likes to do. I actually like this style of dress, though not the print. I just think that the mid-thigh-high slits to this particular party was her making a message that it’s all about her and not about her hosts and fellow guests.

    • Llamas says:

I completely agree with you. That one picture where nearly her entire leg was on display made me sad. I really don’t know why she does it so often. I absolutely love the dress and I would have loved it more with out the two giant slits.

    • Llamas says:

I just saw that her latest dress, while absolutely gorgeous also has a thigh slit…

      • anne_000 says:

I just saw the latest red dress on her and on a model in an ad. The model shows that slit is higher than mid-thigh with both the red and pink fabric having the same high slit.

Also, it has a low-cleavage, not as low as she’s worn before at work-related events, but it’s still very low for an event involving a room full of monks.

Again, it’s all for the cameras and all about her, not respect for her hosts and their guests.

    • Katie says:

      Annnnd *there* it is!

  28. KiddVicious says:

I love the Tory Birch, which surprises me, I don’t usually like Tory Birch. If I saw it on a hanger I wouldn’t like it at all, but it looks really good on Kate. I need to find the Drew photo to compare.

They look like they had a great day and are actually enjoying themselves.

ETA: That guy standing behind Wills and Kate in the last photo is kind if hot. I wonder what he as on under that skirt.

  29. Hazel says:

I love this dress. Love it! And for once, I think she accessorized just right.
It’s just that by now, the whole trip just seems like a really lovely vacation for the two of them. Lots of new clothes for lots of new activities at new & exciting places, plus dinner out. I just…I don’t know. It all seems wrong.

  30. Zimmerman says:

That LSD cup picture is a classic! I hope Celebitchy uses it again and again!

  31. TyrantDestroyed says:

The Kate “smiling at fruit” will be from now my favorite photo ever. It even seems that the cup was containing a special milkshake by the way she was cackling during the bow competition.

  32. Magnoliarose says:

The dress and styling remind me of Sigourney Weaver in the Ice Storm. Very nice and no snark except for the scene stealing family jewels touring India and Bhutan. Get that man some panties. I mean really.

  33. MLouise says:

First time I say it: She NAILED it! Even the shoes!!!! and the orange on the shoulders was the accessories that made all the difference! With the earrings. This is a gorgeous dress, that looks splendid on her frame, give her curves, shows her legs nicely, and all accessories are perfect. 10/10 and even 13/10 as I would wear that look anytime and for the first time ever: I want Kate’s shoes!!!!

  34. what's inside says:

I think she looks wonderful in these pictures and that again, they are happy.

  35. Meadow says:

First time I saw her in this dress I thought OMG, I can’t believe it absolutely fabulous.Twice in one day she nailed it, I’m in shock.

  36. kori says:

The LSD photo–she had found out what the chant being performed said. It’s tradition to sort of talk smack. It apparently went ‘you’re bald. You’re nose is big. Let’s hope you private parts are big too. ‘

  37. Harry Lime says:

Her dress reminds me of that old The Price Is Right game Plinko, but she still looks nice, and, praise be, she didn’t wear the nude pumps.

  38. Chris says:

This is the best post! The photos and comments are priceless. Hilarious stuff!

  39. Melissa says:

Did anyone else notice, the first dress is the same as the one Drew Barrymore was wearing in a post a day or two before?

  40. tw says:

Yowsa, she looks fantastic. I think this is the best she’s ever looked. I wish she would take more chances like this.
