Julia Roberts in Armani at Cannes ‘Money Monster’ premiere: fab or drab?

wenn23851513

This promotional whirlwind around Money Monster is actually Julia Roberts’ first time at the Cannes Film Festival. I was worried that she was going to wear wall-to-wall Givenchy and it was going to be an unflattering array of zoot suit onesies and Kardashian-esque nude netting. But Julia called in some favors and actually turned up at last night’s premiere in a GREAT Armani Prive gown. Julia goes back a long way with Armani, so I don’t know why I didn’t realize that she would be able to call in some favors and get a great gown. This is one of my favorite black gowns thus far from Cannes – it’s got a great cut, it’s flattering, she’s not tripping over a too-long train (hey Amal).

What’s even better about this look on Julia is that she actually tried! I can’t remember the last time I saw Julia on a carpet and thought, “Yes, she actually took some time in hair and makeup.” Plus, that emerald necklace from Chopard is everything. That’s a great statement piece. *goose honk*

There are tragically no solo photos of Caitriona Balfe in her wonderful Louis Vuitton gown. This, along with Julia’s Armani, was one of my favorites.

Eva Longoria wore another Pamella Rolland Fall 2016 for her second night on the carpet. I think it would have looked better without the fabric “belt” effect.

I don’t really know why Susan Sarandon is only doing suits and menswear-inspired pieces at Cannes this year, but sure, I’ll take it… I guess. The thing is, there are so many great women’s suits and tuxedos these days. Why go for this 11-year-old Jean Paul Gaultier suit that looks totally ‘80s?

The dress fits Julia well, but in my opinion it is matronly, and she’s not a person who can carry so much black well. Hair and make-up looks good, but despite the cleavage she still seems dowdy somehow.

    • perplexed says:

That dress looks kind of similar to a dress Princess Diana wore once (the one she wore to the White House?). Diana didn’t look matronly in it at all, but she was only 24.

It kind of seems like Julia forgot to wear Spanx or something to give that enclosed look around the waist. Her necklace is kind of ugly.

    • Esmom says:

I agree it’s not great. I’m not sure if I’d call it matronly but it is pageant-y, as is her hair. Reminds me of Connie Britton in Nashville. It’s even more obvious when she’s next to her co-stars, who look so much more sophisticated.

    • Locke Lamora says:

The neckine/dropped sleeves ruin it for me. They look horrible on everyone. And I hate statement necklaces, but that’s me.

I actually think Jodie looked the best.

      • mee says:

jodie looks great – she always has a clean classic look. she’s aged very well.

i like the other tall dark haired woman’s look as well – cool and elegant.

    • lisa says:

julia’s look is very 80s to me, like what krystal would wear to go fight with alexis on the patio

      • Eden75 says:

I thought maybe it was just me. I remember people wearing that dress to proms back in the 80’s/early 90’s. All she needs is the big a$$ hair and we are good to go.

The necklace however? That needs to find it’s way to my jewelry box asap.

      • JenniferJustice says:

80’s which is probably why I’m getting “Mystic Pizza” vibes. The dress is better than the ill-fitting suits she’s been wearing lately. She should stick to dresses IMO. She does not have a fit body, shapely legs, or much a waiste line so dresses seem to look better on her than shorts or pants.

    • Carol says:

I think its the necklace that contributes to the dress looking matronly. She could have gone with more fashion forward jewelry that is not necessarily chunky.

  2. noway says:

Two extra cool things that aren’t mentioned in this post. Yes Julia looks great, and she is barefoot. Remember the supposed controversy last year where women were expected to wear heals, so Julia goes barefoot. Good for her and she looks great. Second why isn’t Jodie Foster getting mentioned. I love that dress on her she looks amazing also.

    • eo says:

I agree, Jodie looks classic and beautiful. Same as yesterday in the white dress.

    • Mgsota says:

I did see pics of her barefoot, I thought her feet just hurt, but I forgot about that stupid heel thing last year. Good for her! I would definitely be barefoot on the red carpet. I think she looks gorgeous! From top to bottom. Amal looks gorgeous too but all the fussing with her dress ruins it. Julia looks like a professional next to Amal…which she is.

    • tiny martian says:

Hmmmm. Sorry, but I don’t think it’s cool at all that she is barefoot. She can wear flats or heels or army boots, for all I care, but barefoot? That’s just disrespectful. Cannes is a formal event, and formal attire isn’t designed for comfort. If she wants to be comfortable, then she should sit at home on her couch. Even 7-11 won’t allow you in without shoes on, for crying out loud!

      • noway says:

Normally I would agree with you, but last year the director of Selma was there and wearing flats and supposedly told to have heels or she couldn’t enter. A minor big deal with these things, and as a statement I like the fact that she was barefoot for that reason. At least her toes were painted, and man she has big feet so now she has to put up with those comments. Also, I forgot as Richard Gere said to her in Pretty Woman she is really tall.

      • ohdear says:

@noway – but this won’t change the policy. It just highlights that Julia can be an exception, so it feeds her ego. I think it was disrespectful, and very typical Julia.

    • lisa says:

jodie looks wonderful, classic yet current

  3. Tash says:

I don’t know who Caitriona Balfe is but she is stunning!! That dress…I want it!
Plus, Dominic West looks like old Hollywood – dapper as hell.

    • denisemich says:

I love the leather part of that dress

      • noway says:

So do I. Normally I hate that type of cut as I think it makes your breasts look weird, but she has just the right size breasts to pull it off. She is stunning.

    • Kitten says:

I feel like it’s so rare to see an RC dress that I would actually wear, but this is one of those rare occasions. Gorgeous.

And Dominic West is one of my FDs, but I’m not liking what the beard and hair is doing to him here.

    • hogtowngooner says:

She’s the main character in Outlander and it’s awesome! 🙂

  4. DanaG says:

I love Julias necklace stunning and that black dress is lovely. Julia should give Amal some tips on how to wear a dress without constant playing round with the train and how to walk in a dress. I am glad Julia is back when she tries she can be stunning. I like Jodies outfit too and love Catriona she looks great. It really looks like Amal missed the memo. What is Susan Sarandon wearing that dress is just awful and I’m not keen on Eva’s either both meh.

    • Blue says:

Julia does look stunning. I love the picture of her laughing with George, they look like movie stars.

  5. anniefannie says:

I love SS but that dress is tragic AND dated. I think Susan’s one of those people that refuses stylists advice because she feels she knows best and she clearly doesn’t . Julia’s necklace almost makes up for the onesie she wore at the photo call.

  6. Lucy2 says:

I just generally don’t like that off the shoulder look, and that combined with the big necklace and the big hair is just a lot going on for me.
Jodie looks great. Susan’s outfit looks uncomfortable.

  7. Josefina says:

She looks more like Jennifer Garner than herself in that second picture. The dress is alright.

  8. Jade says:

Julia’s dress looks a bit Scarlett O Hara-ish. I can imagine her on a romance novel cover now with Fabio. Head back, hands raised to temple, wind-swept big hair…

  9. DavidBowie says:

Julia’s dress is really nothing special. Why is Eva Longoria always at Cannes? I don’t remember her being in a my movies that last decade or so.

  10. Sabrina says:

I like Caitriona’s outfit the best and love the necklace on Julia. I don’t think the Julia’s dress suits her. Jodie also looks great.

  11. OTHER RENEE says:

I don’t find anything glamorous about Julia’s look. The blonde makes her look washed out and the dress is boring. How is it she’s never been to Cannes before? And why is Eva there exactly? Yacht time aside…

    • Zuzus girl says:

Thank you. No one has mentioned Julia’s hair, that color is so harsh. It does absolutely nothing for her.

Sarandon needs to reel it in. She look so sloppy lately.

      • Jayna says:

Yeah, Julia usually has great color to her hair. Not this time. I don’t know what happened.

Susan has been sloppy, but she obviously just think she’s cool. At the very least, she should get all of these suits and this type gown tailored and get a better fit on her.

      • Kitten says:

I feel for her because her natural color has strong red undertones–this makes it very difficult to go blonde without a brassy result.

I had the same issue when I used to be blonde. I always had to color with a cool-based, ashy blonde to try to get rid of the brass–and even then the red/pink/orange tones would persist.

      • zinjojo says:

ITA! Is this color for a role? It’s really harsh and veers toward orange. As Kitten says, she has a lot of red in her hair naturally, and this blonde isn’t working for her at all.

    • Christin says:

She did the same thing last time she had a movie premiere — colored her hair a rather unflattering (on her) shade.

To show off the necklace and the neckline, I think her hair would have looked better in a half updo.

  12. missmerry says:

I saw a picture from Sarandons instagram of her in this outfit and thought it was photoshopped, her cleavage was EVERYWHERE, so much so I thought it was fake…nope.

  13. paolanqar says:

I thought she looked fantastic. But why no shoes?

  14. lisa2 says:

Julia’s dress is simple but the fit is perfect. I like the necklace but don’t like all the diamonds. I think that emerald is special enough on it’s own. I would have liked the dress more without the sleeves. But she looked good.

    • lucy2 says:

Good point about the necklace, I think I too would like it as a single stone piece.

  15. Dangles says:

I heard they also show films at this fashion show.

  16. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think Julia looks nice except that she doesn’t seem to have found herself as a (slightly) older woman. When she wants to look gorgeous, she clings to the younger version of herself – long and leggy with a mane of hair. That won’t work forever. She’s a beautiful woman NOW, and she should embrace and enjoy that and find a style that suits her. When you refuse to change you just look like an older version of what you once were.

    • perplexed says:

I don’t think Julia has ever really been into fashion that much like other actresses. I think her face and figure have always been enough to get her by so she probably never had to figure out style. She wore some really tragic outfits when she was 23.

    • Esmom says:

I think she’s tried to find a new style for her age — that menswear-ish stuff she seems to sport more and more, which doesn’t really work, imo. But then she defaults to her old look too often, too.

It’s too bad because she is beautiful but just doesn’t seem to have any innate style. Or anyone to advise or help her!

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

I was actually thinking kind of the opposite–She has wrinkles! Like, plenty of them! Instead of falling into the trap so many actresses do of freezing/ruining their face out of fear of getting older, Julia seems comfortable with her wrinkly eyes–and her arms. She’s never been a big fashion girl, so I think instead of clinging to her youth what she’s actually doing is just going with what’s comfortable. Sofia Loren still goes with long and leggy with a mane of hair, Susan Sarandon and Helen Mirren still work their cleavage, and it works for all of them.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Well, that’s an excellent point. Her wrinkles, I mean. And everyone else is right to point out that she was never a huge fashion girl. I certainly don’t mean she shouldn’t work whatever works, I just mean she looks exactly the same to me as she did fifteen years ago, and I think she could do more interesting things with all of her great features. But then again, I have like one great feature and I’m not exactly setting the fashion world on it’s ear. So maybe she comfortable and I was just projecting.

      • siri says:

I agree with you about her not really caring too much about style. To me, that’s a sign of maturity. I think she just doesn’t want to get headaches about what to wear when. So she ends up looking comfortable, and slightly boring when it comes to events like this. So what? She has a great smile (although I sometimes wish she would tone it down a notch), a pretty face, and an outgoing personality. Amal might have it all together style-wise, but next to Julia she looks insecure, and stiff.

      • Classy and Sassy says:

I agree, Scarlet – Julia is embracing getting older gracefully. I’m not crazy on the dress itself, but the overall look is great on her. Why change a winning team? She’s a knockout, and will be for many years to come.

  17. Boobaas says:

Ummmm did anyone see how she bucked the system and went totally barefoot?? No heels. No flats. Just barefoot! No one even knew until she lifted her gown to climb the stairs!

    • OTHER RENEE says:

Who can blame her? Hours in heels is torture. Remember when she married Lyle Lovett barefoot?

    • Esmom says:

I get wanting to ditch the heels but barefoot just grosses me out. I can see her cutting herself somehow and needing a tetanus shot. Little ballet flats or even flip flips would be more sanitary.

      • Starkiller says:

You get tetanus from stepping on something that’s been sitting in manure. I doubt that’s a concern at Cannes.

      • tiny martian says:

@Starkiller: But Paris sidewalks are full of dog poop, so there’s that. And every shoe worn to Cannes that has previously walked on that sidewalk is chock full o’ poop germs, I guarantee it. So barefoot at Cannes is a big nope for me!

  18. serena says:

Julia looks really great in that dress! Love the whole look! And especially the photo with George, it’s so cute!

  19. Jayna says:

Can I just say Julia rocked it last night. I didn’t expect it of her. And she’s selling it. She looked beautiful, and the gown was very flattering on her. Caitriona looked amazing. And Jodie, very classic.

And I watched the video of them all up there together, and the group was really glamorous. And like @Blue said above, George and Julia together laughing, it was truly a big movie star moment. You felt the chemistry and their glamour. And Julia has the most amazing smile ever when she’s turning it on. She was laughing with Dominic, the British actor, up there also, giving some great moments on the red carpet.

What I didn’t realize was she and George gave an interview together the other day for ET or some show like that, and she said she had never been to Cannes and was so excited after watching it on TV for so many years. He was asking her if she was nervous about the famously dreaded stairs. I think that’s why she went without shoes.

Everyone in that group looked fantastic They said the movie got a four-minute standing ovation, and that it looked like Jodie Foster was emotional and holding back tears from the reaction. I read an interview with her I think it was with the New York Times, and it was very moving. I will be there this weekend to support her as a female director of a commercial movie. The reviews are decent, but the one thing the reviewers said was that Julia and George were great in it, as were all the supporting actors also.

Jodie actually had the script revised several times to give the female character a meatier role than was originally there. The interviewer said he doubted that would have happened with a male director.

    • hmmm says:

Catriona looks like she’s thirsty. I’ve hated both her looks so far. This is beginning to taint my view of her character in Outlander. Looks like she doesn’t want to be taken seriously as an actress.

  20. QQ says:

Not a bad dress to go with her fresh crazy eyes!

Also Is NOBODY gonna point out that Eva Longoria and Clooney of the Delicious blind of last year are both in Cannes? and she was in Lake Como recent too?? no one??

    • Christin says:

I thought there was a blind about them from his ‘post-wrester/meeting the greatest woman ever’ era but can’t recall the details.

      • QQ says:

Around then.. before even that they’ve been dealing with each other for a WHILE like that is his secret thang… that she was all in Europe when he was doing Monuments men and no one was questioning why, but they are now partnered up so seeing them in the same location does make me wonder how does that work

      • Christin says:

That does sound interesting. Especially since he’s past his usual 2 year trade-in mark for this relationship.

    • perplexed says:

Oh good, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks her eyes look crazy lately.

      • QQ says:

SUPER! she is almost cross eyed? But with a Mix of whatever was happening to Courtney Cox the other day ?

  21. JustJen says:

The other day I was channel surfing and paused on an old movie, Warlock (1989), and I could not get over Lori Singer’s profoundly orange hair. Like she tried to go blond and failed miserably. It was about the color of Julia’s hair. Not a good color. That’s what your hair ended up as when you over did it on the Sun-In.

  22. helena says:

julia’s dress is stunning. the upper part especially. and she looks amazing in it. but I don’t like her in black. she’s too joyful for it.

  23. tracking says:

No photo here with Amal? I thought she looked really spectacular.

  24. Tig says:

Julia’s necklace is stunning! How big is that emerald?? And will never get tired of seeing emeralds paired with black-so dramatic. Agree she needs a new hair color STAT.

Ms Outlander looks amazing. I wish both she and Michelle Dockery could break through in a bigger way. They are both so lovely and talented.

And not to diminish the importance of all the WA threads/discussions yesterday, but this is a nice break- they all look great.

  25. Suzanne says:

Julia Roberts: look at me!!! Look at me!!! Look at meeeee!!!!!! I’m so cool! I’m so fun!!! Meeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

    • Shannon says:

omg yup – that is always the vibe I get from her. I think she seems like she’d be really annoying in person.

  26. Lucy says:

I must say…I really like that picture of her with GC.

  27. Twinkle says:

Julia looks drab. As always. Can someone please tell my why Eva is there? It’s not the first time either. She has no film screening there. She has no films screening anywhere.

  28. Cat'sMeow says:

She looks like the bitchy girl who’s always hanging on your boyfriend laughing like they’re having the best time.

  29. Joannie says:

She looks a mess! The dress did her no favours.

  30. Starkiller says:

Julia’s whole look is almost exactly what Scarlett Johansson wore to Venice a few years ago, right down to the necklace. I think Scarlett’s was a Versace, but I wouldn’t swear to it.

Sassenach can really wear a dress…not surprising since she was a model for years, but she looks great and I doubt I’d like that dress on anyone else. I’m excited that she’s getting film roles!

I absolutely love Susan’s. Her DGAF attitude makes it work.

  31. Tara says:

I love it. Julia looks stunning. Not too try-hard. The dress is flattering on her. This is one of her best looks. She looks like she is having fun. She also seemed humbled by the big standing ovation they got inside. She used to come across as not so humble.

Jodie looks fab too. Age-appropriate and elegant. I notice she loves to wear blue Armani. She sticks with what works for her.

  32. what's inside says:

I thought dress looked like a more severe form of the gown she wore when in Pretty Woman going to the opera. It looks great and I really covet that emerald.

  33. Jen43 says:

Jodie Foster looks amazing. I can’t stand Susan’s dress. The fit is awful.

    • Citresse says:

Not sure if it’s the fit. Sarandon is known for wearing young, trendy clothing. She looks great sometimes. It’s hit and miss with her.

  34. Scw says:

Ok. Julia Roberts has THE WORST stylist. She rarely looks put together and in fashion. Nor does she wear flattering clothes. She could look amazing but just never does!

  35. hmmm says:

Geez, At this point I wish Susan Sarandon would act her age. Which means, give up the sex pot vibe and look mature and grown up and classy. Seriously, she’s wandering into the desperation of Madonna territory.

  36. Anare says:

Julia’s dress is fine. It fits and is appropriate. I don’t like the drop sleeves. I dislike the color of her hair and her makeup was nothing special. I continue to find her annoying AF.

I have not liked the style of Eva Longoria’s dresses lately. They make her look short and boxy. I think she is beautiful with a great figure and I know she is not tall, but those fitted straight gowns don’t look great on her imho.

  37. SilkyMalice says:

Julia is a girl who loves to eat, and the dress is matronly. The only bright thing about her is her smile (as usual). It’s so interesting to see these photos, because you can tell who is really having fun and who is just doing their job.

  38. Classy and Sassy says:

Julie was superb in this film. Totally reaffirmed my love of her as an actress.

  39. Citresse says:

You know, there comes a time when women (esp nearing or in their 70s) don’t look so good in certain styles such high cut slit dresses and low cut revealing all, but hey Sarandon still rocks in most ways. It’s like when Kate Middleton’s mom doesn’t get proper support (bra) when wearing certain low cut dresses. Hey- aging happens, people can accept it and find the right style.
I don’t know if someone else commented on the high cut but I will make time to read all comments by end of day today.

  40. Tredd says:

She looks amazing. However, the necklace was unnecessary.
