Karlie Kloss in Louis Vuitton, with a bump-it, in Cannes: retro-chic or terrible?

wenn23872913

Here are some photos from Tuesday night’s Cannes premiere of Julieta. There was a strong assortment of models, many of whom have just arrived in Cannes ahead of what will likely be a MAJOR amfAR gala on Thursday. Expect lots and lots of photos on Friday! Anyway, the biggest name amongst the models for Tuesday’s premieres was easily Karlie Kloss. She wore this Louis Vuitton, with a BUMP-IT. Beyond the weird, 1950s-style hair, I don’t get this dress at all. Is this whole look retro chic? Or just weird and unpleasant?

Lara Stone in Prada… I would have liked to see this without the black belt and without the front slit. I think the dress would have been much more interesting without those design “tricks.”

Barbara Palvin in Philosophy… this is so girlish and “sweet.” It looks like something a grandmother would pick out.

Natasha Poly in Prada. This was honestly one of my favorite looks of Tuesday.

Izabel Goulart in Ralph & Russo Spring 2016 Couture. This is literally a corset, a pair of panties and a robe. It’s a very pretty, old-Hollywood robe, for sure. But it’s just a robe.

Petra Nemcova in shiny SAFiYAA. I don’t really get this dress? The extra fabric drape is just stupid.

Love, love, LOVE Barbara Palvin’s dress – the color, the softness of it…just gorgeous.

Who is the chica behind Petra in the see-through dress with massive granny-panties? No bueno!

    • Vizia says:

Lady Victoria Hervey. Known for her no bueno fashion choices.

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I just googled her. I thought she was in her late 50’s and she is only 39? That is not how skin of someone under 40 is supposed to look like.

  2. guest says:

K.K is another basic looking model. I never see the appeal. She’s attractive but not special looking.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I agree…I see much prettier girls walking around my town!

    • Lilalis says:

Karlie’s not beautiful but photegenic as f*ck and she can actually model. Her work before she started working with Victoria’s Secret was perfection.

      • Stella Alpina says:

Karlie succeeds because she knows how to pose and is tall and lanky. Like Gisele, she has these specific qualities that the fashion industry wants. But, like Gisele, Karlie doesn’t have any aspirational beauty that models decades ago had. She’s just cute, with a face that handles a ton of makeup and which is greatly enhanced by Photoshop.

And it seems we get even less with the new crop of models like Kendall and Gigi: pretty girls – not women – who are bland to the utmost.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I think she’s super pretty too, but yeah, she’s amazingly photogenic and has a great walk. I like her look here.
I much prefer today’s weird looking models than the models of yesterday. They were too exposed for models, and they all looked boring.
Natasha Poly is a rare model that is both incredibly beautiful AND interesting.

        What is “aspirational beauty” anyway?

      • Eden75 says:

She is extremely photogenic. I have said in other posts that there are models who are very plain looking until you put them on camera, then, wow. Linda Evangelista is one of them. She photographs extremely well and while she is not plain looking irl, she commands a room when she walks in, she is not near as beautiful as she is in pictures. Ms. Linda is very striking and her everyday walk is something that my short self would love to be able to copy. I don’t think Karlie is plain looking but the camera really sets her off in the same way.

As for her look here? I like it. Like the dress, like the hair, love the makeup.

      • believe says:

“Natasha Poly is a rare model that is both incredibly beautiful AND interesting.” Natasha is not interesting.

    • mellie says:

I was just thinking the same thing. There are some angles that she just looks very average. I know a lot of tall/thin girls that are much prettier from probably just about any angle.

    • Elisa the I. says:

+1, she is tall and slender but her face is so average.

    • MC2 says:

I am with Lilalis- Karlie is good at her job which is why she is so successful & I find it refreshing. She is great at posing for pictures & can look completely different per the job (reminds me of Linda E.). She shows up, does her job well, has respect & has done well. It’s nice to have to combat all the nepotism that is going around.

    • haley1020 says:

she’s lucky tay tay took an liking to her lol

    • G says:

Most of the time I think she looks pretty but borderline plain. The most I ‘get’ her is when she models sportswear or athleisure looks. She has that clean, healthy, streamlined look down, but all of this with the bow and the makeup and the space-femme… Not so much.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t understand Karlie’s dress, either. Is that a shirt under it? I don’t mind her hair so much, but it has nothing to do with the dress. So I don’t get it. I don’t find her pretty at all, though her legs are gorgeous.

The fabric of Laura Stone’s Prada gown is beautiful, but I agree the black belt is too heavy looking with it.

Barbara Palvin’s dress looks like an apron from the fifties.

I would like the robe if it wasn’t so sheer and looked more like a dress. As it is, I bet there are pink feathered mules on under there.

Petra looks pretty, though I don’t get the drape, either.

    • Esmom says:

Agree about Karlie’s look — the hair is inoffensive and the dress is pretty killer on her but the two don’t go togother at all.

  4. Lora says:

I hate karlies dress, its just terrible

  5. Alix says:

Karlie’s dress is something Alexis Carrington would’ve worn back in the 80s.

  6. Jegede says:

They are all L’Oreal models. L’Oreal sponsors Cannes.

Though I’m surprised Kloss showed up in the later days of the festival.

She’s one of the brand’s more prominent faces.

And her face looks different here.

    • Tiffany says:

Thought it was just me. Her face is….I can put my finger on it.

Maybe allegies, reaction to medication. Something is off.

  7. ell says:

so weird reading of people thinking kk isn’t attractive, i think she’s absolutely gorgeous. and i love the dress, the hair not so much.

barbara palvin and lara stones’ dresses are very pretty as well, but kk’s stands out more.

  8. Lex says:

Barbara Palvin is just so gorgeous, I don’t get why she hasn’t become a bigger thing. I heard VS dropped her after one year because she was too “curvy”. I would totally wear her dress.

    • SpareRib says:

She’s not good to work with. She used to hang around in the same crowd as my friends and I in Budapest. She is beautiful but girls like her are common in Hungary, she was just the pushiest. Her sister might have been a better VS choice.

  9. jennifer says:

Karlie’s dress reminds me of those awful gold veined mirrors.

  10. Barrett says:

Karlie looks horrible, as a super tall (6’1) women she does not need a bump it to add height. It makes her look like an alien.

I can say this I’m a regular tall women (5’10).

And the dress is not right for her, she does sleek, sophisticated better

  11. als says:

I love Karlie Kloss’ face expression and posture. In every picture.
She is so different and more beautiful than the dead eyed group made of Kendall Jenner and the Hadid sisters. In some pics Kendall actually goes into thriller territory with the look in her eyes.

  12. OriginallyBlue says:

I don’t like Karlie’s dress, it kind of reminds me of Alicia Vikander’s SAG dress.
I like the idea of the black bow breaking up Lara Stone’s dress, but I don’t understand why they placed it and the slit at the same spot. The ribbon covers the slit, so there is no point to it.

  13. tacos and tv says:

Barbara Palvin has the most beautiful face! Never heard of her before but she is adorable!

  14. meme says:

take the black thing away and I LOVE Lara’s dress. Natasha’s dress is gorgeous. Usually I hate Prada but these are fab. The rest I dislike intensely. LV makes ugly clothes.

  15. Dani says:

I truly do not find any of these women ‘remarkable’. Aren’t models supposed to be crazy beautiful while also having that ‘umph’? I don’t get it from any of them. They’re all conventionally attractive. I think the prettiest is Izabel, but even then, I couldn’t pick any of these girls out of a line up. I see prettier girls walking around NYC.

    • Jen43 says:

I was going to say the same thing. Izabel is the only one I would even call pretty. I know I am old, but back in the 80’s young me would have died to look like any number of models. Christy, Naomi, Linda, Cindy, Christie, Tatiana, Karen, and I could go on.

  16. Anon says:

I love 1960s-inspired hair, but the execution of this is horrendous. The proportions are off and the bow is laying in a weird position. Not flattering. Also, she probably isn’t wearing a bump-it. I’m sure it’s just backcombed. Bump-its are pretty pointless and an invention of the mid 2000s for people who don’t understand how to do a retro hairstyles correctly.

  17. Hazel says:

    ‘Bump-it’? Can someone enlighten me?

  18. TreadStyle says:

I kind of like Karlie’s look, it’s funky which seems fitting for the setting. I’m on the fence. I think the Barbara girl looks really pretty, the dress and her styling look great on her!

  19. Magnoliarose says:

Natasha Poly looks the best all around. Karli doesn’t look dead eyed and nowadays that is a plus. Her red carpet style is never great but she wears clothes well. Lara’s dress could have worked better without the sash thing whatever.

  20. Erica_V says:

I can never see Petra Nemcova and not think of how she cling to a tree with a broken pelvis for eight hours after she watched her fiancee be pulled away and carried off into the ocean. So sad.

Karlie Kloss is my spirit animal she’s so incredibly gorgeous and talented. Not to mention the charity work she does… anyone saying the opposite is mental. She’s stunning and a fantastic model.

  21. batata says:

    B Palvin is stunning
