Liam Hemsworth on his relationship with Miley Cyrus: ‘People will figure it out’

liam1

Uncomfortable opinion: neither Liam Hemsworth nor Chris Hemsworth is worth a damn as an actor. They are both beefcakes who mostly sleepwalk their way through their roles. But I’ve always thought that Liam is the “hot Hemsworth,” and I actually think Liam is the more watchable, compelling Hemsworth. So I was happy to see Liam on the cover of July’s GQ Australia. He’s promoting Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the wildly popular ‘90s film Independence Day. Unfortunately for all involved, Liam spends most of the interview bitching about fame and the attention he gets for being back with Miley Cyrus. Whom he doesn’t even mention by name.

He doesn’t listen to the gossip: “I don’t read or listen to the press – and these days I don’t base my decisions on it at all. I base all my decisions on what’s happening in front of me and I’m much happier by doing that.”

He has a huge spread in Malibu: “Living here is just so much better for my mind… I grew up by the beach, surfing, and I’m much more conditioned to that sort of lifestyle… I wanted to get back to the beach, I needed it, to be by the water and to be able to go surfing.” Miley, too, has recently entered Malibu’s 90265 postcode – said to have purchased the property adjacent to his.

Meeting Miley when he was 20: “I guess when I feel something, then I just feel it and I go for it. I make my decisions about what’s going to make me happy, what I think is right and what I want to do – and I don’t worry too much outside of that.”

Splitting with Miley in 2013: “Of course it was hard, man. But at the time we were going in different directions and it’s just what needed to happen. We were both super young and it was a good decision at the time – we both needed that.”

Where he is with Miley now: “People will figure it out, they already have… They’re not dumb.”

The fame that came with the Hunger Games franchise made him retreat:
“Definitely – especially when you start to first experience the paparazzi bulls–t. You’re less inclined to go to public places.”

[From GQ Australia]

I sort of stopped covering the back-and-forth drama between Liam and Miley because it was pissing me off. I think whatever happened between Liam and Miley back in 2013 really messed her up, and I think she really loved him. When they got back together late last year, the narrative was “Miley is going to settle down now that she’s back with Liam” and “Miley had to change to earn Liam’s love again.” Is that what really happened? I have no idea. But I do think that Liam had conditions and Miley was still so hung up on him, she would do anything for him. And that’s not a great basis for a relationship of equals. I guess I’m just worried that Liam is secretly a douchebag who “blames” Miley for being famous (or more famous than Liam). Does that make sense? Eh.

I don’t even notice their acting. They’re the Australian Channing Tatums.

I can’t stand Miley and their relationship is never going to work but it will be entertaining to watch.

  2. Kezia says:

What the hell is with that cover? It’s like they mixed Chris Evans face with Liam Hemsworth’s. They’ve made him look wizened, I’m 29 and look 20 years younger then him!

    • OriginallyBlue says:

Right! He looks bad and his lips look dry. I also considered him the hot Hemsworth, but that cover is garbage.

    • Melody says:

Yes! Total jowly Chris Evsns vibe here. Not good.

  3. InvaderTak says:

Yeah I will give his big bro Chris some credit; he treats Elsa with a level of respect and deference (and I mean that in a good way can’t think of a better word) that I just don’t see in Liam. Agree with your last paragraph. Liam just seems like a jealous jerk too much. Between his brother being Thor, his character in the Hunger Games being lame and Miley being a superstar he always seems to be clinging on to someone for fame.

  4. Jen says:

I just assumed it was because Miley Cyrus was seriously intolerable there for awhile?

    • Willa says:

      Lmao!!! Right?!

    • Lex says:

Miley’s current persona is all for her career – it’s an act. It got her new found attention and was an image for her new album at the time.
But as a young woman, it could have been hard for her to know how to separate that from her ‘normal’ at home life. For her partner to then have to deal with all of that at home, yeah that’s tough!

It’s entirely possible that she now knows how to keep her lives separate (I imagine similar to being with Lady Gaga) – she still is wacky in public but is chill at home and keeps her tongue in her head. Much more tolerable.

    • HH says:

Exactly. I don’t think it was necessarily about “image,” but the need for Miley to splash her new image EVERYWHERE. Liam is clearly a more lowkey, private individual and Miley was doing way too much for a while. I don’t think she changed her image, but she’s calmed down in terms of publicity. Whether that’s due to people getting way too much of her or her falling back, I’m not sure–maybe a little of column A and a little of column B. However, hopefully things work out for them.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

Yes! I mean, I was flummoxed he didn’t jettison her much, much sooner. I had a kneejerk revulsion for her at the time; I can’t imagine how excruciating it would have been to be her romantic partner and see her grinding her butt on Robin Thicke, being a drama-hound instead of a singer, and flapping her Molly-dried, coated tongue at the world.

  5. Almondjoy says:

I seriously don’t get him and Miley as couple… But maybe they’re more alike than I realize. Not sure.

    • CharlotteCharlotte says:

The only thing I know of them together is through this site (and I usually don’t click on their stories) and through the GFY Girls doing a “fug recap” of the movie they made together, which is where they met.

It’s a good read. Love the fug recaps.

Also, still laughing at “Australian Channing Tatums”. Hahahha

  6. OriginallyBlue says:

Of course people figured it out. Miley made sure everyone knew that they were back together. I figured something was up when she dumped her girlfriend, the thing with her getting him to adopt a dog. It all happened very shortly after the other. I know when they were broken up she had a girlfriend and claimed to have had sex with people of varying orientations. I really wonder how that will affect their relationship. He seems to be a very vanilla traditional type of person and she was claiming not to be that for a long time. I agree he has some conditions on their relationship so it will be interesting to see how she acts once they have been back together for awhile and possibly make it down the aisle.

  7. meme says:

    he’s sooooooooooooooooooo boring.

  8. laulau says:

He is pretty and did seem nice enough on the Daily Show a few years ago but I completely forgot about him which I think might be true for many people.

Him and Miley seem so different and while she isn’t my cup of tea I feel a bit ragey at the thought of anyone thinking they need a complete image overhaul to be ‘worthy’ of someone else.
Like just date other, more compatable people; Liam could go for someone not in the industry and Miley could go for someone more comfortable with her flamboyance.

  9. Lilacflowers says:

It sounds like Liam hasn’t figured it out yet.

And I think Miley was messed up BEFORE the breakup and her antics were the cause of the breakup.

    • mp says:

oh come on, stop blaming her, as far as gossip goes, he’s the one that allegedly cheated, not the other way around.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

If he cheated, yes he was in the wrong, but she was seriously whack-a-doodle for a while there.

I mean, she was taking drugs like crazy and acting like a different person. No excuse for him to cheat, but a genuinely good reason for him to be running away as fast as he could.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I blame her for the disgusting behavior she was exhibiting prior to and after the breakup. And if I recall, he dumped her.

    • Kate says:

It sounds like he’s almost embarrassed of it and won’t come right out and say what they have going on

  10. I’m not getting sexy from either of those pictures. I’m getting, ” Yeah, I’m hot, and I hate your guts.” His come hither look needs a little work.

  11. Mia4s says:

They won’t last. “I’ll change for you! To make you happy!” is a dreadful basis for a relationship. That said, they’re young. As long as they don’t do something stupid like get married or have a kid, it’s fine.

I’ll give Liam this; he isn’t trying to stretch. Big dumb blockbusters can make a lucrative career. If I hear he’s decided to take on an Inarritu pic, then my eyes will start rolling.

  12. BFDL says:

    @MIA4S They’re engaged.

Yeah Miley was always a little…eccentric. Even as a teen she was taking pictures of herself wearing only a wet t-shirt in a shower.

She was never going to be America’s Sweetheart.

I don’t know why they can’t see what others see (you’re not compatible, it’s never going to work!) but love has always been blind.

I think she’s in love with him and he’s in love with what she could be.

    • OriginallyBlue says:

Sounds like he’s in love with Hanna Montana. Miley had her moments, but she was fairly subdued and “normal” when they were together. Then she cut off her hair. I think Liam might miss that old Miley. If she is changing or surpressing her real self for him it is going to crash and burn. Since they got back together she has been fairly quiet. I still think they are too young to be be thinking about getting marriage again.

  13. Izzy says:

I think Chris has far more potential as an actor. See: Rush.

    • Cranberry says:

Agree. I’m not even a fan of Chris, but I think Kaiser’s a bit harsh on him. I don’t think he has a lot of range, but for what he can do, action hero lead, he is good at. Those over the top character roles are not that easy or fun to pull off. They’re usually very one dimensional but still have to be sold by someone that can embody those mostly symbolic traits. For an actor those roles can be difficult because they’re unrealistic, unrelatable and even boring. So I give him credit for that, and think he’s been cast well in all the roles he’s been in especially Thor.
And Kaiser needs to adjust her spectacles. Liam better looking than Chris – me thinks not. He’s generally an attractive, strapping young man, and maybe very young women and perhaps pre-teens might find him more attractive because of his relative youth compared to his family-man older brother. On top of Chris just having nicer features and being a bit more studly than Liam, he also has more personality in his expressions and a sparkle in his eye and smile. Maybe it’s cause he’s older and has more confidence and is happily settled as a family man. Like I said I’m not even a big fan in that I don’t follow his doings or regularly post on his threads, but I got give credit where credit is due.

    • lilacflowers says:

I really enjoyed Rush and others I know who have seen it were surprised at how much they enjoyed it too. He did a nice job of it. And he does have very good comedic timing so I’m interested to see what he does in Ghostbusters. He has been on SNL several times now and the writers really let him down because he seemed to be willing to do just about anything.

  14. ALEX says:

Yea Liam has the emotional range of a rock on screen…he definitely got the THG role because of his looks. His acting is pretty terrible. Chris as well but hey Chris has comedic chops that I’ve been really surprised by.

As for the Miley thing it seemed like it was a lot of things. I think Miley started shedding her image and Liam wasn’t down with it. Maybe he just didn’t like the person she became? Is that really so wrong of him? I don’t know if he cheated or if they were originally over before we knew it. I think Miley and Liam were each others first adult loves so they gave it another shot away from the press for months before coming out again.

  15. Jess says:

I agree with the writer’s assessment. Miley really loved this douche nozzle and that breakup messed her up. I remember watching an episode of ‘Punk’d’ where Miley pranks Liam. Before the prank, she mentions that Liam has a temper and says some other things that made it seem as if the dynamic was very much that Miley adjusted for him. All I’m saying is that: It didn’t/doesn’t seem as if he considers her as much as she considers him.

  16. na na says:

lol.. I think he looks like Nicholas Cage… And not in a good way. I don’t really care about his relationship with Miley, they are both very meh in my opinion… BTW WHAT is that beard??

  17. Amanda G says:

RUN LIAM RUN! He is way too awesome and hot for her…
