Cate Blanchett is in talks to join Sandra Bullock’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ remake

I missed the initial announcement on this film, so now I’m sitting here with a giant “?????” thought-bubble over my head. Last year, there was a rumor that Sandra Bullock was interested in making an all-female remake/redo of Ocean’s Eleven. It was never going to be a strict all-lady remake, they were just going to loosely base the story on the 2001 Ocean’s Eleven movie starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Bullock was reportedly interested in playing the Clooney-esque lead role. And now for the kicker: Cate Blanchett might be joining the cast as the co-lead, or the Brad Pitt-esque part.

You’ll remember last fall we broke the news: Sandra Bullock would be starring in an all-female “Ocean’s Eleven” film directed by Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games,” “Seabiscuit”). The project was concocted by Ross, who brought the idea to original ‘Ocean’s’ franchise director Steven Soderbergh. He in turn brought it to the late producer Jerry Weintraub and with Bullock in tow, the team was off and running (though the project was secretly in existence months before we reported it). With a solid pitch from Ross, a longtime pal of Soderbergh’s, it was a no-brainer for Soderbergh to step aside and let Ross, director of the upcoming Civil War drama “Free State of Jones,” take over. However, there’s more.

Sources close to the project tell The Playlist that “Carol” star Cate Blanchett is currently in talks to join the film that is currently affectionately known as “Ocean’s Ocho” by the key creatives, which of course means eight principal thieves pulling off a heist, not eleven. Should the deal close, Blanchett would be playing the Brad Pitt role next to Bullock’s Clooney character at least as far as the outline goes. But neither actress is playing a female version of those characters. Instead, the roles are loosely modeled after the friendship/partnership dynamic established in the Soderbergh films.

Expected to be a star-studded affair, the film is aiming to shoot this late fall/early winter, but that may put the brakes on the rumored involvement of Jennifer Lawrence. Apparently, she may have a scheduling conflict. While Lawrence has a relationship with Ross (he directed her in “The Hunger Games,” and the pair had been developing a two-part adaptation of John Steinbeck‘s “East Of Eden” and an adaptation of Hannah Kent‘s bestselling “Burial Rites”), we’re hearing her name in connection to the film is early and her involvement may not pan out.

While there was some early talk that George Clooney’s Danny Ocean character could cameo in the film, that idea has been nixed for now. However, they have loose plans for sequels should the movie take off, and it’s possible the character could appear down the road.

[From The Playlist]

While I think it’s sort of cheeseball to constantly do all-lady remakes of all of these films, I’ve been thinking about this movie, where an all-lady group of thieves pull off some kind of major score, and I have to admit… it could work. It could work really well. I would have been in with just Bullock’s involvement, but add Cate Blanchett to the mix in a lighter, more comedic role and this could be really interesting. Bullock will probably produce this, and I trust her as a producer. I trust that she’ll bring in some interesting – and hopefully diverse – ladies into the mix. J-Law would be unnecessary. But Kerry Washington, maybe? Or how about Viola Davis? And/or Constance Wu? And Tessa Thompson! And Teyonah Parris. And Mindy Kaling. Throw in Emma Stone and America Ferrera. I hope all of these ladies and more get calls to come in and read for roles.

This would be awesome if they announced a female director for this. Gary Ross, really?

    • Lucky says:

Yeah…Elizabeth Banks could totally do it

      • LAK says:

She’s just backed out of PITCH PERFECT for family reasons. Given timing of intended shoot, i don’t think she would take this.

      • joan says:

I’d love to see some unannounced cameos of Clooney and Pitt and some of the other guys — in drag.

That could be such a hoot.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Ahem, the Frank Sinatra role. The Dean Martin role. The Sammy Davis, Jr role.

And Shirley MacLaine needs to be involved

But what’s next? The all-female Platoon?

    • Tiffany says:

I know Lilac. Have her at the bar, tipsy, reminiscing making out with Sam, while a muzak version of ‘Ain’t that a kick in the head’ plays in the background.

    • boredblond says:

Yup..it’s a remake of a remake..at least the first time they were wise enough not to have sequels

    • Lucinda says:

I think all-female remakes are great because they take take the argument that an all-female movie won’t work and turn it on its head. By taking a concept that was already a hit (twice), they immediately show that a good story will sell regardless of the gender of the leads. They are able to show that female leads can draw audience in too if given the right material. The problem is that currently the only female-lead stories tend to be stories with a narrow appeal to begin with while male-lead movies run the gamut. Gender-swapped remakes, in my mind, are a great way to prove that it isn’t gender that sells tickets.

    • Zuzus Girl says:

Thank you. Everyone forgets the Clooney/ Pitt movie wasn’t an original idea.

I wish the women would get together and WRITE an original screenplay.

      • Lee says:

Absolutely Zuzus Girl!! Though I do love the idea of Viola Davis in the mix and Mindy Kaling.

  3. original kay says:

    Lucy Liu!

  4. Neelyo says:

This kinda feels like the 60s when HELLO DOLLY was a smash on Broadway so they decided to run an all-black version down the street.

I dunno, there’s something about correcting course by exclusion that just sort of rubs me the wrong way. I’m all for more female representation but does that mean it only comes by way of making all-female remakes?

What’s most offensive is yet another remake of this shitty film. Has anyone actually tried to sit through the original? I dare you.

    • Tiffany says:

I did, given the colorful background of the lights of Las Vagas, the material was very dark compared to the Clooney version. I thought the original was fantastic.

    • Lucky says:

I just want to see these ladies over forty kicking ass and making fun of the genre. A gang of ladies over forty sounds awesome

    • jc126 says:

It’s so lame to just keep making the same films over and over. Yuck. Way too much of that for too many years now. How about people write some new movies?

  5. LMB says:

    Why even bother?

  6. Lucky says:

This is great news! Get Elizabeth Banks and on board too in addition to Davis, Washington and Octavia Spencer. And yeah Mindy Kalining would be perfect. Annette Benning.

Please keep us updated. This looks awesome!

  7. Guesto says:

No. Just no. No. Really, no.

Get all those kickass women together to do something new and fresh and original by all means, but not this.

  8. Lucky says:

    What about Robin Wright?

    • llee says:

oh she’d be great as the villainess. Or an evil sister to Cate’s character. They really look like sisters.

  9. Aiobhan says:

Gary Ross is a horrible director. I cannot think off hand one comedy film in the same vein as the first ocean films that were directed by a women, but I would love a female to direct this film if they are serious about it.

anyone but Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa McCarthy. J.Law sucks. Melissa needs something fresh to tackle.

Remove Cate because I find her distasteful.

    My dream cast:
    Sandra Bullock
    Sandra Oh
    Parminder Nagra
    Debra Wilson
    Shanola Hampton
    Michelle Pfeiffer/Uma Thurman
    Pam Grier/Angela Bassett
    Gina Torres
    Ali Wong

I honestly could sit here all day thinking of a diverse cast of women to put in this film. I have a strong feeling though that this cast is going to be very white and very predictable.

    • Tiffany says:

If they go with a male director, throw money at Paul Feig. If that is the case there is a possibility that McCarthy will be involved.

And you cast list is awesome.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, to Sandra Oh. And there must be a scene where she beats someone up with a motorcycle helmet. Because there must always be a scene when Sandra Oh beats someone up with a motorcycle helmet

    • Lucky says:

Ooooh Debra Wilson and Sandra Oh! That is an awesome cast list

    • Lucky says:

      Sarah Ramirez.

  10. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Ignatius? She named her son Ignatius???

All I can think of is “A Confederacy of Dunces.”

  11. sofie says:

Why not put money into small independent films with strong female roles instead of all these remakes &marvel films? At least they use their imagination.

  12. nicegirl says:

Nah, not with Cate Blanchett or Emma Stone. Not into the W. Allen lovers/apologists, myself.

  13. thecookingpan says:

    My cast:
    Sandra Bullock (George)
    Care Blanchett (Brad)
    Kerry Washington (tech whizz)
Lucy Liu (as the explosives expert)
    Melissa McCarthy (Bernie Mac’s character)
    Elizabeth Banks (Matt character)
    Lupita Nyong’o (acrobat)
Kristen Wiig (petrol head, I don’t think we need 2)
Viola Davis (as Andy Garcia’s character)
Shirley MacLaine is a must – love that suggestion – (Reuben)

    • cd3 says:

Ooooh this is a fun game.

      Here’s my cast:
      Sandra Bullock (George Clooney)
      Cate Blanchett (Brad Pitt)
      Wanda Sykes (Bernie Mac)
      Bette Midler (Elliott Gould)
      Archie Panjabi (Livingston Dell)
      Monica Bellucci (Carl Reiner)
      Ruth Wilson (Matt Damon)
      Adele (Don Cheadle)
      Mae Whitman (the acrobat)
      Carla Gugino (Andy Garcia)
      Timothy Olyphant (Julia Roberts)
Two really good relatively unknown female comics (Scott Caan / Casey Affleck)

  14. Bey says:

doing stale remakes of mediocore remakes is not going to help any woman in Hollywood. i think its even worse its like “you girls can film whatever we throw in the trash, alrighty?”

why would anyone want to see this? i can only hurt the cause for women if such big all female movies are not well received.

at least its not another comic book movie.

  15. lucy2 says:

I’d rather see them just write an original heist film for this cast, but at the same time, don’t want to complain if female driven movies are finally getting a little more traction.

  16. llee says:

I’d rather watch the original story movie Steve McQueen (12 years slave) is putting together with Gillian Flynn writing the script about a group of ladies that want to finish the heist job that their late thieves husbands left unfinished (or something like that) That’s more interesting than reboot a past hit with an all female cast, it will be bastardized just like Ghostbusters

  17. Lara says:

    Emma Thompson. Gotta have Emma.
