Melissa McCarthy fights for her characters to be realistic: ‘I get psychotically attached’

Above is a photo from an Elle Women in comedy event last night in LA with the ladies of Ghostbusters. When I first saw these pics I got excited and assumed they were of the premiere, but alas Ghostbusters is not coming out until July 14th! Dan Aykroyd was there and looked to be in good spirits, which is reassuring because he had to be hospitalized for abdominal pain over the weekend. He has spoken very highly of the reboot and has called it funny, “breathtaking” and “outstanding.”

Elle has four covers this July for their first ever “Women in Comedy” issue, each featuring one of the reboot’s stars. You can see those below. The excerpts from the interviews they sent focus on their work and comedy, which is refreshing but not highly quotable. I do like what Melissa McCarthy said about trying to nail her characters to the point where she gets attached to how they’re portrayed because she feels like she knows them. Plus Kate McKinnon said she learned to embrace the fact that she communicates by doing impressions and characters. She’s so skilled at it so that’s not surprising. Here are some more quotes from the piece:

Melissa McCarthy on fighting for the characters she plays, Interviewed by Brian Atwood
Brian Atwood: “You’re having a ball. What is it about your comedy that makes people really get it?”

Melissa McCarthy: “I get so psychotically attached to all of my characters, and I fight for them in probably the most annoying way. I hear myself saying to Ben or Paul [Feig, Ghostbusters’ director], “She wouldn’t phrase it that way.” I know it’s such an actory thing, but I feel it to my core: I have to represent the woman I’m getting to be. Even if she’s fictitious, she’s always real to me: three-dimensional, flawed, loving, screwed-up, as real women are.”

Kate McKinnon on understanding herself differently these days, interviewed by Lizzy Goodman:
“I came to a reckoning that [pretending to be other people] is in fact such a real, huge chunk of the way I communicate. I thought it was something I was putting on to disguise something else, but it’s not.” So, what she’s saying is that in real life McKinnon is, in fact, Justin Bieber?, Goodman writes. “That is what I am telling you, yes.”

Leslie Jones on knowing she was funny, interviewed by Ben Dickison
“I just knew that I was funny, and I knew that it was just a matter of time. I didn’t know what was going to actually happen—this is definitely way bigger than I thought—but I knew there was no way I was going to be that funny and nobody was going to notice it.”

Kristen Wiig on her SNL firsts, interviewed by Will Ferrell
Will Ferrell: “So, Saturday Night Live. What was the first thing you got to do on the show? Was it all almost too enormous to be nervous?”

Kristen Wiig: “My very first show I got on something that I wrote. I was weirdly less nervous for that than I was for the first sketch I was in, which was about someone being pregnant in their butt. I think it was Poehler, and we had a baby shower for her and –”

WF: “God, that’s good.”

KW: “I was scared that I was going to freeze or swear or pass out.”

I have my fingers crossed that Ghostbusters will not only be good but that it will make bank at the box office. We have to wait another five weeks though to find out.

In terms of the editorials, my favorite cover photo is of Kate McKinnon in that killer black Dolce & Gabbana pantsuit. Do you recognize the sparkly bolero jacket that Kristen Wiig is wearing on her cover? That’s by Marc Jacobs and we just saw it on Adriana Lima at the CFDAs. It does look like something Kristen would wear on the red carpet, she doesn’t have the best taste. Case in point:

I think Melissa’s dress would have been cuter with 3/4 length sleeves instead of bell sleeves, but it’s cute regardless.

I REALLY hope it actually turns out to be FANTASTIC. But I seriously have my doubts. I just can’t see a scenario where this does super well.

  2. Ninks says:

I just really want this to do so well. And my crush on Leslie Jones is growing tenfold everyday.

I couldn’t agree more. Leslie Jones has a commercial on right now and I’ve seen it at least a dozen times. But I stop and watch it again every time it’s on and I start laughing. She just kills me and I’m so happy about her success. All those pictures are gorgeous!

  3. Lucy says:

Leslie Jones is so tall! Love it. And her cover is stunning! All of them are, actually. I’m really rooting for this movie, in case you couldn’t tell hahaha.

  4. Locke Lamora says:

Kristen actually looks great in the jacket. Lima looked awful. Adriana hasnt got a waist and the jacket wasn’t fitted properly, so maybe that’s why it looked so bad.

  5. Bex says:

I so hope that this is amazing. I too covet Kristin’s jacket.

Can we all promise to go see it on the opening weekend??? Even if it’s bad, let’s all go and tell those whiny babies on the internet to suck it. They are only mad because they are women, the movie had bad reception even before they released any trailers.

It’s a bit silly to suggest that the only reason people have for being pessimistic about this movie is sexism. People get really touchy about beloved classic nostalgic movies getting remade, that’s a pretty big factor in the disapproval. I’m not denying there are people who are put off because of the all-female cast (or that there would be somewhat less vitriol if it weren’t an all-female cast), but it’s definitely not the only factor. There would have been strong backlash no matter what.

Ghostbusters isn’t nostalgic to me but I think a remake is highly unnecessary. I don’t enjoy Melissa McCarthy’s comedy so this movie is really not aimed at me. I don’t have anything against the rest of the cast so I might wind up seeing it, but whether I like it or not will really be decided by the comedy in it and the performances.

    I love all the covers!
I hope this does well too. I plan on going to see it, even if the reviews aren’t great. I love the cast, love the director, loved the original.

  8. Betsy says:

Usually when there are multiple covers, I always find the “ugh, her?” cover. There is no “ugh, her?” cover this time! I’ll be overjoyed to find any of the four.

God, I love that pink dress on Melissa.
