Duchess Kate in a Catherine Walker coatdress at St. Paul’s: cute or cloying?

wenn24552122

Here are some photos of the Duchess of Cambridge and other royals today at St. Paul’s Cathedral. They attended a service of thanksgiving for Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, which is funny because today is actually the Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday. But today is the start of a three-day celebration for the Queen, her birthday and her historic reign. In addition to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, this church service was also attended by the York princesses, Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales, the Countess of Wessex, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Duchess of Cornwall, Zara Phillips, Tony Blair, David Cameron and John Major. You can see the Daily Mail’s photos here.

While the Queen wore a bright yellow, Kate decided on a more muted palate. She chose this light blue Catherine Walker coatdress, because Kate is obsessed with coatdresses. The white, lacy lattice-work down the front is not my cup of tea, but I think the look is appropriate for a morning church service. The thing that bugs me most of all is that I believe with all my heart that Kate had the hem raised so she could show off more leg, and whomever did it made a hash of it – look at how uneven that looks! Kate’s hat is by Jane Taylor, and Kate paired the ensemble with a pair of much-beloved nude heels. I have to say… the York princesses looked fantastic this morning. The Duke of York, not so much.

You English people are so lucky that you get to wear coat-dresses in June. It’s 35 degrees here and I’m dying. God, I hate summer.

I like Kate’s lookm but then again, I love frilly stuff. The nude pumps are awful.
Beatrice looks nice, Eugenie not so much.

    • Sixer says:

17C here, sorry! But I am 300m up in the clouds. Might be a bit more stuffy in London.

I find it odd that there is such a thing as church fashion.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Why, God, must I live in a Mediterranean climate?

Maybe it’s a royalty thing? Here people don’t really dress this fancy for church. As long as it’s not too revealing or sweatpants, you’re good.

      • Sixer says:

It’s probably better than it being so rainy that even when it isn’t raining, the air still feels wet. High up here, as we are, it sometimes seems like that!

I think it must be a royalty thing. Although I confess: I have no idea what plebs here wear to church. Nobody I know actually goes.

      • Rapunzel says:

It’s been between 38-41 in my neck of the woods lately. Kate’s dress is making me long for cool weather.

      • Cee says:

Locke Lamore – I live in Buenos Aires so I understand you sooo well!. Presently it’s 10:25 in the morning and 0°C. At 7 in the morning I thought I had been transported to a freezer. In two months Spring will be here and the temperature will be so high I will probably melt and die.

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

South of Portugal, some nice 95 ºF (35º C) all week long… Though right now, it’s slightly cloudy and windy, and the temps have dropped to 77º F (25ºC)…

      • Ripley says:

Registered at 50* today… That’s 120* to my peeps. I live in a scorching hellscape.

      • Egla says:

The weather man promised 40 degrees C here next week so…pray for me as between my work clothes, no air conditioning in my office or our transportation I don’t think I will survive

    • spidey says:

It has been well up in the 20s here in the Midlands all week. Now it is throwing it down!

    • What was that says:

It’s funny you would not say that if you lived here!!!…the Brits don’t have a tan ..its rust!!
Just as I sometimes wish for a hot summer ..and from what you say the reality isn’t than much fun!!!!
I do appreciate the seasons here though..despite the ‘changeable’ weather..
I do remember an ex flat mate who had lived in the USA And returned constantly complaining about the grey days..and it is true…but that’s why I try and treasure the sunny days..and so many Brits retire to Spain!!!

      • Locke Lamora says:

I don’t tan, I burn. Aaaw the joys of being pale. And I like rain and grey days. Seems like Britain is the place for me, weather wise.

      • What was that says:

I feel for you Locke Lamora..I have a Celtic skin too..
When I go on holiday to Scotland or the North of England in the summer I take my Wellington boots(galoshes) ,cardigans and sun tan cream..plus mosquito repellant..they are not dangerous but do bite !!
The saying is you can have four seasons in one day in Bonnies Scotland…
Or if you don’t like the weather wait an hour and it will be different!!!

      • Birdix says:

You’d be happy in San Francisco too. Feels like living at the bottom of a lake of fog this time of year.

    • HollyG says:

The cream colored hat does not match the ice blue dress does not match the pinky-nude pumps does not match the golden beige clutch. Did George pick out her outfit or something?

      • CMiddy says:

Thank you! The coordination is terrible! Also, the flouncy hat with the very detailed coat completely off-kilter – something simple such as pillbox sans flowers and crap would have been much more elegant.

    • Clare says:

Wouldn’t quite call it lucky! We are having a warm-ish week in Cambridge, but expecting cold again by Sunday! No one wants to wear jumpers in June 😩

    • Elizabeth says:

Really? You think Beatrice looks better than Eugenie? I’m just the opposite – I think Eugenie looks really elegant in her red dress and Beatrice looks like a sherpa. That coat is so stiff-looking!

    • balticstar says:

I thought just the opposite! The red dress is very elegant, the dress Beatrice is wearing looks like my grandmas old curtains. Does not flatter her at all. Eugenie looks sensational (for once), IMO.

      • Danielle says:

Eugenia looks wonderful in the red dress.

      • Redgrl says:

I think Eugenie would look better If she stood up straight & bought a proper bra. But that’s minor; she does look lovely. Beatrice’s dress is too garish for the event imo.

      • Fire&Blood says:

Eugenie looks the best out of them all, tbh. Well, aside from HM The Queen of course. But red is definitely her colour. Co-signing the need to improve her posture and get a better-fitting bra though

    • Ronaldinhio says:

I hate how she dresses. She could dress fashionably and elegantly but always misses the mark.
I would love her to showcase British fashion in a way that would drive people to purchase it. Catherine Walker is deathly dull and v mother of the bride.

The York Princesses are chunkier girls which, in strict fashion terms, should work against them but I love that they try. I would rather a horrible fashion faux pas than Kate’s bland blank space.

  2. UCatwoman says:

The burning question here is, what on earth does the queen carry in that ever present pocketbook?

    • spidey says:

      Tissues, lipstick, definitely no cash!

    • potatopie says:

      dog biscuits

      • Ankhel says:

A miniature, but functional, jewelled cattle prod for the Cambridges. And a roll of lozenges.

    • What was that says:

Here that is called a handbag ..and became a verb after Prime Minister Thatcher ..it was claimed she did some damage with it..But if you were ‘handbagged’ I think the interpretation is that you have been verbally or politically out manoeuvred !!..
The temptation to handbag her family must be great!!

    • VegasSchmagus says:

Werthers candies, the keys to Buckingham Palace

    • HollyG says:

A handful of medals for her various patronages. When Kate shows up at an event, the queen whips one out and throws it like a bolo before Kate can deflect it with her magic clutch.

    • notasugarhere says:

Among other things, a hankie, lipstick, pen, mints, and a compact given to her by Prince Philip as a wedding gift.

    • Deedee says:

Some sort of GPS tracking device, in case she’s kidnapped. And a sausage for the Corgis.

  3. Beth says:

I must say: she looks lovely. And Beatrice and Eugenie look like dorks!

    • Chrissy says:

LOL! I think Beatrice looks like she’s wearing a skeleton dress and that full skirt does her no favours.

      • Alix says:

Eugenie looks fine, but what was Beatrice thinking??

Don’t mind Kate’s coat dress so much as the crumpled Kleenex on her head.

Damn, I wish summers where I live were cool enough to wear long sleeves!

      • Ankhel says:

Beatrice looks like a less favoured courtier in Wonderland. Eugenie looks better, except for the wet tie some guy tore off and threw on her head.

        Wow, I’m cranky today.

      • Yellowrose says:

This . . . she looks like she’s celebrating Day of the Dead. Good lord, does she even HAVE a mirror? And the dress and shoes Eugenie has on are at least within the realm of reasonable – but the giant blue bow on the head? What is she, eight years old?!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She looks horrible, but then she always does.

      • Sharon Lea says:

I agree, the sleeves look like something Janet Jackson would wear for a video or performance. This isn’t very ‘churchy’ to me.

      • Eleonor says:

        THIS ONE.
        Seems Halloween stuff !

      • Melly says:

I don’t care what any of you say, Beatrice’s dress looks freakin awesome! I would buy that in a heartbeat, assuming I could afford it!

      • ms-mich says:

I agree that Beatrice looks like she is from Alice and Wonderland,

      • Megan says:

They both have such nice figures. Why do they hide them under miles of fabric?

      • Redgrl says:

        Chrissy – agreed re Beatrice

    • Rachel says:

I thought Eugenie killed it in her red dress. The DM seems to agree – a full separate article on ‘stunning’ Eugenie, whereas Kate’s rather bland ensemble did not receive any special mentions.

      • This Face Believes You says:

She did look amazing but totally out of place. Everyone else was in pastels and she wore a sexy hot red number. She looked great though!

      • Sharon Lea says:

Yes, I like Eugenie’s look too, very 1950s. The hat and shoes go nicely with the dress.

      • Cee says:

Sexy hot? Look at her hemline. She can’t help she has large breasts, unlike Beatrice and Kate.

She dressed for her figure and looked both stylish and beautiful.

      • This Face Believes You says:

I have a similarly curvy body so I understand what goes into dressing appropriately and still looking stylish. For a church service in honor of your grandmother’s 90th birthday you either wear a form fitting dress that doesn’t show too much skin in a less attention grabbing color OR you wear a fire engine red dress that skims (like a sheath) but can’t be described as va va voom. Were it a different occasion I wouldn’t classify that dress as too sexy, but come on. Her grandmother’s 90th birthday church service?

      • kaiko says:

Love the red dress and her styling, for once. Kate definitely prefers the same sort of look, but this one wasn’t her best. The front pattern/placement, and lack of an artificial “waist” elongated her already long torso.

      • Nikki says:

Eugenie’s dress would have been perfect for a cocktail party, but bright red with a chest slit accent just wasn’t a great choice for this church service. Her sister has the most appalling taste- as in, NO taste at all. It’s beyond me how she could pick such wildly unflattering ensembles. Kate looks SO much better than either of them, whether her hem isn’t perfect or she wears beige shoes. I also don’t see those as so terrible. If she wore white or blue ones, everyone would scream “Matchy Matchy!!”

    • Fire&Blood says:

At least Beatrice and Eugenie have never been caught flashing everyone their cooch multiple times during state visits 😀

  4. Megan says:

    The Queen looks fabulous.

  5. LadyMTL says:

I don’t hate the coat-dress but I’m not in love with it either. The length seems a bit weird to me, and with the fascinator it borders on frou-frou. That said, I do like the color.

    • VegasSchmagus says:

looks like a bird smashed into her head.

    • AtlLady says:

I wonder if Catherine prefers the coat dress because it can be tailored to give her some shape. She has a rather boyish figure with no real curves.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Hmm. It’s not awful, but I don’t love that color on her, and I hate that hat with the coat dress. I’m tired of her confusing me. Is that a coat or a dress? Nobody else makes me constantly question my basic knowledge of garments the way she does. And enough with the nude shoes. That is also disconcerting. I like the Queen. She doesn’t confuse me. Or disconcert me. You can tell what she’s wearing – a cute and happy hat, a dress, a matching coat, matching shoes all in a great color for her, a small, classic handbag and some kick ass jewelry. Long live the Queen.

    • LAK says:

This looks like a coat-style dress. No dress underneath.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thank you. I will come to you in the future for clothing explanations.

    • LAK says:

GNAT: her coat dresses and or adherence to this style above all else is puzzling. Sometimes it IS a coat and a dress, sometimes it is a dress-style coat, sometimes it’s a coat + dress suit and other times she appears to wear an actual coat zipped from hem to neckline without a dress underneath – tends to be her green coats.

When she wears a coat-style dress as above, it’s a head scratcher. She chooses the same design and silhoutte repeatedly that it is hard to tell which is which. Like you, i spent a few minutes trying to figure out what this outfit is.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You are very patient and kind. She does adore that silhouette!

      • Egla says:

I think I saw some kind of a dress underneath but I might be wrong. I think someone told her THAT is the look and she goes on to wear those coat-dress-dresscoat- leggins-blue-stripes -whatever.
Actually if you look closely everybody has a “personal style” or “comfort clothes” more or less. I know I have mine. You would see me dead in a minidress ore transparent clothes and after work I wear jeans and a t-shirt and no make up.
She for sure has no desire to experiment and to dear. I LOVE Queen Letizia of spain and Queen Rania of Jordan. They are true fashion icons and some of their clothes aren’t as expensive as hers at least it’s true for Queen Letizia. She could copy, no shame there.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I think it may be a piece of wearable Wedgwood!

  7. Megan says:

Beatrice looks ridiculous. Can someone hire her a stylist? She just gets it wrong almost every time there is a formal occasion. As a member of the royal family her only purpose is going to formal occasions. Kate looks lovely!

    • spidey says:

Looks like a piece of leftover lino flooring.

    • Sharon Lea says:

I’ve read they have a stylist, for a couple years now. Makes you wonder if Beatrice doesn’t like what is picked out and says ‘no, no, no’ to each thing and the stylist has to find stuff to Beatrice’s liking.

    • Melly says:

I guess i’m in the minority because I love Beatrice’s outfit. I think the black and white coat dress looks awesome.

      • Yup, Me says:

I like it too. It’s striking and has some personality. I wonder if some people are bothered by the fact that it doesn’t hide her curviness and, in fact, plays it up a bit.

      • Chicken says:

I like it, too! The pattern is so interesting. The only thing I don’t like is that the fabric looks so very heavy, and I feel like that much pattern in a summer dress should feel a little lighter. But still, it’s an actual fashion choice, something Duchess Kate just doesn’t do or understand.

    • India Andrews says:

I love Beatrice’s craziness. It livens up the event like Cher back in her day of crazy hats and sequins.

      • Vava says:

I was just thinking the same thing. Cher. I don’t mind the Yorks, at least they aren’t boring……………..like Kate.

  8. Tiara says:

Well of course Tony got invited – he is more Tory than the Tories, notice how none of the actual socialists do though, you know the opposition Leader who SHOULD be invited ….this always reminds me to not give an inch to the establishment, despite liking Betty

  9. Barrett says:

Old lady like, bad color for her. Andrew and Fergies daughters look young and fresh, especially the one in the orange/red dress.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Interesting. I think the Queen, who you so charmingly refer to as “old lady,” looks lovely in yellow, while the York girls look matronly and ridiculous as usual. I guess there’s no accounting for taste.

      • Susan says:

I think she was calling Kate old-lady like based on her coat/dress. Not the queen

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, sorry. Ahem, then I have to agree with the color remark. I am such a tool.

    • magnolia says:

I completely agree Barrett! Beatrice is at least taking a chance on fashion, which is more exciting than Kate’s blah style. And I would buy Eugenie’s dress in a heartbeat.

    • Fifee says:

Completely agree! Looks like something that Camilla would wear. The Queen looks lovely, I love seeing her in bright colours. Love what Eugenie has on, Beatrice not so much.

      • CuriousCole says:

Exactly, my immediate thought was Kate’s coat would be better worn by Camilla! It’s far too old for a supposed thirty-something woman.

      • Tina says:

Yup. Kate has a tendency to dress like her mother for formal daytime occasions, and this is very Carole.

    • Sarah says:

I agree. And I noticed Kate doing it again – as Harry is looking back at someone, kate looks like she’s trying to pretend he’s talking to her. He doesn’t seem to talk to her at all anymore.

    • Hazel says:

The overall silhouette is similar to Camilla’s outfit that day; color, too. Kate’s too young for such frumpiness, which on Camilla is not frumpy,

  10. Ankhel says:

The colour of Kate’s shoes makes her look like she’s got Barbie feet. That’s not a compliment.

  11. Vava says:

I wouldn’t be caught dead in that outfit. Kate looks ridiculous.

    • India Andrews says:

Kate looks like a pensioner as usual. That dress would be great…on Camilla or the Queen.

  12. What was that says:

If ever there was a case for revolution the Yorks are it..Just as well he is out of the line of succession now..

    • Cee says:

He is not out. He is 6th in line…

      • What was that says:

Sorry I meant ..he is further than he was..I remember when it was Charles then him…
        Less likely now ,Thank God!
        ..
But doesn’t he still remind them all of Who He Is!

        Come the Revolution!

    • LAK says:

6th is still not far away enough to breathe a sigh of relief. Afterall, this entire family is technically 51st in line if Catholics hadn’t been banned.

Not to mention the many times spares, even those unlikely, have taken the throne. Victoria was technically 6th in line.

      • What was that says:

Please don’t depress me even more….it’s bad enough as it is without thinking of the possibility of him….
Still ,as history has shown all it takes is one crappy monarch to irk the commoners to pitchforks!!
The only thing is I just can’t bear the thought ..it’s like Trump without the ballot box…

  13. Yellowrose says:

Nah, she looks great. Lovely coatdress, totes appropriate. No, the real story here is how Princess Beatrice yet again displays the dress gene she got from her mother. She also appears to have lifted 20 pounds from the formerly chunky awkward younger sister, who now appears, if not well dressed, much less badly dressed and newly slim.

The dress Beatrice has on is so heinous, and makes her look so awful, that it reminds me of the one her mother wore to Ascot in the months before her wedding to Prince Andres, that drew howls of “Frock Horror!” in the papers the next day.

    • LAK says:

Beatrice is wearing a coat, not a dress.

    • Melly says:

I’m really surprised by all the hate towards Beatrice’s coat dress. I think it looks awesome and I would totally rock that in the Autumn months (too hot where I live to wear it now). It does add a little weight to her but she isn’t some stick figure like Kate, she has a few extra pounds.

    • cindyp says:

Please stop on the Beatrice hate. At least she tries vs Kate who could cure insomnia with her boring coat dresses. B rocks!

  14. lala says:

Oh Katie…I have no hope for you any more. Boring, plane and clueless. That is all I can say about Kate after all these years.

  15. LadyJane says:

She has become such a connoisseur of beige shoes that she has found a pair of shoes that matches her leg colour, exactly. The resulting effect is no shoes at all, only her leg elongating into a single, pointy toe.

    • MinnFinn says:

Some of shoe companies maybe Manolo Blahnik will custom mix and dye your shoes to match your skin tone.

  16. Starlight says:

Very nice pastel blue, Kate certainly lightens up in Harry’s company, not sure why she has to laugh so noticeably when he makes a joke at such a ceremony. I wonder how much influence she has on him regarding girlfriends. Happy birthday Prince Phillip and the Queen belated birthday highly praised for her stoical solid reign in the ceremony and her hard work. I couldn’t see Wills fidgeting but he has big shoes to step into if Charles shadows his mother as a hard working Royal. Mind you Wills next to Camilla in the seating plan not sure if he looked comfortable.
Bea and Eugenie giving some personality to the morning with their outfits. Sally Bercow the parliament speakers wife needs a haircut and Samantha Cameron showed of her bohemian personality again.

    • Sarah says:

Harry used To seem friendly with Kate, but there’s been a real chill there. Now she often is looking at him laughing when he’s talking to someone else entirely!

  17. This Face Believes You says:

I want the ladies from the other European Royal Houses to adopt Kate. All the Royal ladies who married in started off sartorially weak. Eventually though, their style grew as their confidence in their roles did. I’m sure it will happen for Kate too, I just wish it was accelerated just a bit and those women are masters!

    • paddyjr says:

Yes, there really needs to be some sort of princess welfare service that helps the sartorially-challenged. Kate seems to swing from fading into the background to being the focus of attention for all the wrong reasons. I don’t hate the individual pieces she has, but when she puts an outfit together, something seems to be off. The alterations to the coatdress are no bueno. You can see the lace is longer than the dress; alterations should be clean and unnoticeable.

    • India Andrews says:

Would Kate listen to any of them? My gut says no, she wouldn’t.

      • paddyjr says:

Of course she wouldn’t, I just like the idea of princess sorority helping each other out 😉

  18. khaveman says:

Eugenie for the win! Love the red. She looks wonderful. And Lady Amelia’s dress was great.

    • India Andrews says:

I loved Eugenie in red and thought Lady Amelia was a hot mess. Too much going on there. She needs to learn to edit her clothing.

    • Mika says:

Eugenie looked lovely but I don’t think her dress was appropriate for a morning Church service. Although stunning, it is not the right colour or style to wear IMO at that event.

Kate looked her usual boring 60 year old self – no pizazz – no proper co-ordination – wrong hat, wrong shoes, wrong clutch. I understand her fashion choice in the coatdress style, but her choice of colours and fabrics are awfully old for someone so young.

  19. The Original Mia says:

Kate’s dress is boring. As usual. She could have recycled the same light blue Catherine Walker coat dress she wore while pregnant with Charlotte. No need to buy and butcher a new one.

I like Bea’s coat dress. I would have preferred a different color, but the pattern is at least interesting.

Eugene looks fantastic! So does Anne. Summer looks ill. Zara looked good too.

    • cindyp says:

Totally agree, Kate is so nondescript, no one would notice her if she wasn’t the Duchess. Her clothes look so cheap. Sophie looks so elegant; Kate really should use her stylist. Even Camilla looks nice, the pearl necklace is fabulous. That’s what Kate needs, a bright color, bold print &/or striking piece of jewelry.

      • Amber says:

In one, just ONE of the half a dozen articles the DM has written about this, they casually mentioned that the coatdress is bespoke and pieces by Walker tend to START around £15,000. They embedded it in the article in a box under the title “Kate’s 15,000 Triumph”. I don’t know where they got that figure from. But even on the lower end it would cost at least $5-10K. So that cheap looking, nothing of a thing may have cost as much as a car. And Kate just keeps unveiling one unstylish, interchangeable, unremarkable (red, blue, royal blue, navy blue, pale blue, green, etc.,) piece after another. And none of them are ever tailored well or look worth their price at all.

  20. HyacinthBucket says:

That coatdress would be probably looking really fabulous. On Camilla.

I have to admit, however, to being totally anti-Cambridge these days. They make quite a pig’s ear out of their roles and I’m fed up with their entitled attitude. Harry looks like thunder alonside the two in most of the pics, no matter how often DM says he was in good spirits.

  21. ZIZABET says:

Maybe its the way the camera catches her or maybe because of the length of her heels but whenever I see Kate pictures, I get the distinct feeling that she is hopping along.
I also totally love the York princesses’ dresses especially Beatrice. I am a bit full figured and would totally rock it.
I also love Eugenie’s figure and the dress accentuates it beautifully.
Lady Louise looks totally mature even though I don’t like the dress on her.

  22. India Andrews says:

Kate is dressing like she’s sixty-five again.

  23. MinnFinn says:

The coat dress is appropriate, so yeah Kate because she so often gets just that wrong. I really dislike the zipper front. It just screws up the lacy delicateness. Oh well, I think it’s a really frumpy dress anyway, so who cares if the zipper is a bad choice of fastening device.

  24. mellie says:

I don’t hate that coat dress, I’m not sure what a good shoe choice would have been, if not something nude/beige. I love the red dress, but the black/white ensemble just looks like very, very starched curtains. This may have been answered before, but why is it that Kate takes so much heat on this site for not working (which I agree, she’s far from killing herself), but those two York sisters get relatively little shade thrown their way for their lifestyle? I know they aren’t going to ever run the monarchy or anything, but it still appears that they spend money like they made it and really don’t seem contribute much. Plus, their fashion is way, way worse than Kate…IMO anyway.

    • MinnFinn says:

Kate and Willy get criticized because they have spent millions of pounds of taxpayer money renovating their flat at Kensington Palace. The Brits have a tacit agreement with the core royals that in exchange for taxpayer funded perks like protection and luxury housing they do charity work. Bea and Eugenie don’t get taxpayer money for their housing.

      • What was that says:

I wouldn’t look too closely at Andrew etc finances ..blood pressure will rise ..and pitchforks may come out!

  25. neocleo says:

The shoes are terrible. Otherwise she looks great.

  26. burnsie says:

At least these nude shoes are actually nude, so there’s that…otherwise it’s same ole Kate as usual

  27. Joannie says:

Kate looks lovely and appropriate. I can’t say the same for the Yorks esp Beatrice.

    • Mika says:

I noted upthread that Eugenie’s stunning red dress is actually quite inappropriate for this church event. Although she looks lovely, it’s is the wrong sartorial choice for such an event. Beatrice’s coat would be more suited to winter.

  28. Minxx says:

I love Eugenie’s look – the dress is gorgeous on her!

  29. vreeland says:

The York Princesses — just NO. With their money, they could afford a stylist.

Duchess Kate — meh. The coat dress was pretty, if a bit bland, but she would have been criticized if she had chosen a bold colour, like Eugenie did, and it would have been said she was upstaging The Queen. I laughed at the description of her awful hat (a leftover from Princess Charlotte’s christening), as a crumpled Kleenex.

  30. Apples says:

We haven’t seen the Middletons in a while, none of them. Are they attending this event? Or any other state functions where Kate was present for that matter? I miss seeing Carole – I like that stylish woman.

  31. PoliteTeaSipper says:

Don’t kill me, but I would wear Kate’s coat dress. It would have to have a longer hem though.

    • Mari says:

I like the coat/dress, too. It’s the hat and hairstyle with it that’s the problem. Like most, I’m sick of seeing her hair down, but she should either wear it like she did for her wedding or in a ponytail. That bun makes her look 100.

  32. Olenna says:

Oh, geez. Another David’s Bridal ensemble. She’s looking more and more like Carole, and it’s not just the matronly clothes. She’s lost too much weight and with it her youthful, fuller face.

  33. cerys says:

As usual, too short and quite frumpy. More suited to a mother of the bride except for the length. Also someone needs to tell her that talking and giggling with Harry is not appropriate in church.

  34. SamiHami says:

I’m starting to think that Beatrice is deliberately trying to look as frumpy as possible. She just has no clue what looks good on her. Eugenie looks okay, but I hate her shoes. They just don’t look right on her.

As for Kate, love the coat dress, hate the hat. Actually, the hat is fine; just not with that dress. Other than that she looks alright, although she’d look much better with her hair down.

  35. KiddVicious says:

I love Princess Ann’s outfit. I wish they had shown more pictures of it, it seemed to have a slight art deco feel to it.

  36. Sunsetsnow says:

She looks terrible! Another ugly coatdress for the lazy Duchess.

  37. ClaireB says:

I thought Kate’s lace was quite pretty until I zoomed in and saw all the pom-pom dots on it. I hate those! And her cream hat with the white flowers doesn’t match itself, much less the dress. I agree with GNAT above that I get so confused about whether she’s wearing a coat-dress or a coat as a dress or a coat with a dress. She wears the same thing over and over.

That one picture of Beatrice looks awful, like she’s in a Day of the Dead parade. Maybe it looks better from a different angle? Eugenie’s dress looks pretty, and I don’t mind her hat except that it looks navy while her shoes are black. That drives me bonkers because I like matching accessories. Apparently nothing pleases me today except the Queen’s traditional bright color, so I’ll show myself out.

  38. hmmm says:

What more proof do we need that she can’t dress herself in a tasteful way? Imagine worshipping this lame excuse for a fashionista. This all fits with the flatness of her personality and presence.

  39. Amelie says:

Kate’s outfit is fine apart from her shoes. Usually the nude heels don’t bother me but today it looks really bad. The shoes match her skin tone so closely it looks like she is barefoot almost. Black heels here would have worked just fine!! And she put her hair up at least.

    • Polly says:

That’s the point of nude shoes though, to elongate the leg. I think black would be too heavy with this outfit and white would look tacky. That said, I think the whole outfit is ugly, mismatched and too mature for her.

  40. l_invo says:

Awful as usual. And again that shoes. She don’t have any stile. No imagination at all. She have 2 pare of nude shoes and wear them with everything all year round. She absolutely hopeless. And when finally someone teach her to get out of the car like a lady? She always spill out of the cab. Duchess…. She is pathetic.

    • Vava says:

LOL………….she does exit a vehicle rather oddly.

I think her coat looks like Wedgewood blue dip jasperware. Never liked that, either.

  41. Dean says:

I thought this site was supposed to be smart

  42. MrsK says:

    1. Prince Philip looks good. I think he is quite fragile, so kudos to him for pulling his act together to be the dashing escort to his wife, who is still clearly ga-ga over him even after all these years.

    2. HM looks ok, but what is the crease in her coat? She is always so impeccable that even a slight deviation is noticeable.

    3. I am surprised that after all this time, no one has been able to convince HM to switch to a lighter-colored handbag (or even a nice straw tote) and shoes for summer months.

    4. All the others, forgettable.

  43. Emily says:

Eugenie’s look is giving me young Queen Elizabeth II vibes in these pics.

  44. Dee says:

I know it’s tradition but when will the fascinators die? Proper hats good. Head doilies Oh so bad. Not modern or classic.

    • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

This, I hate the fascinators too, they’re horrid, it’s a stupid fashion (or better, lack of fashion)

    • Redgrl says:

Noooo! Love fascinators – they’re so fun!!

  45. Reece says:

I agree the York Princesses looked great. One critique I would had have broken up the pattern of Bea’s dress/coat dress with a solid color belt. Black, cream or even a color would have been awesome. The matching belt doesn’t help it.
Eugenie looks Flippin’ Amazing! I love everything.

  46. Betti says:

Chutney and Chopper must have been on a ‘secret’ trip to Mustique – they both look rather tanned. Can’t see them sunbathing in Amners garden.

  47. Redgrl says:

Autumn Phillips looks like she has a pineapple on her head. Ill-advised. Sophie has a lovely smile. Cameron’s wife is too casual for the event. Duke of York looks like he is pondering his next shady move.

  48. I think the hemline of Kate’s outfit should be a touch longer. I don’t want to see her knobby knees.

  49. Goodnight says:

I think British people are insane for moving to Australia because of the weather.

You’ve gone from a place where 37 degrees is an unprecedented heat wave temperature to somewhere where 37 is an average day from November-March. I’d swap climates in a heartbeat.

  50. Citresse says:

Eugenie looked the best, after HM of course.
Kate? Well, at least her hair looked controlled- that’s all any individual can say at this point in time about her given her ongoing reluctance to public life ie giving speeches etc….
