Lupita Nyong’o in Boss by Jason Wu at the Tony Awards: lovely or boring?

Lupita Nyong’o didn’t win a Tony Award last night for her work in Eclipsed. Unlike the film awards and TV awards, I actually don’t have a sense of who the “favorite” Tony nominees are, or whether people expected Lupita to win. But she didn’t. She lost to Jessica Lange, who is now a Grammy short of an EGOT, I believe. As for Lupita, she was on-theme with this floral look from Boss by Jason Wu. I love it.

Here’s Lupita’s costar Eclipsed playwright Danai Gurira in custom Rosie Assoulin. Very bright and pretty. Lupita would have looked great in this yellow too.

Here’s Lupita’s new nemesis (!!) Jessica Lange in J Mendel. She won for Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which is easily one of the most depressing plays ever.

My girl Lucy Liu wore Zuhair Murad. Too princess-y for Lucy, I think. I usually like her style a lot, but this is not the best. I think the color is wrong too.

Allison Williams in this smart DKNY suit was honestly one of my favorite looks of the night.

And here’s Glenn Close with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Close is wearing Paule Ka.

Jessica was definitely the favourite, she was almost a lock for the award. I like Lupita’s dress here a lot- it’s not her most adventurous look, but she looks stunning in it.

Right. Lupitas dress has great shape for her figure, but what’s up with the floral obsession? Spring is pretty much over where I live.

Her style is usually hit or miss ( more miss) but this looks great. I’m not a huge fan of the off the shoulder neckline, but Lupita makes it work.
Danai looks amazing. What a beautiful woman.

Danai’s look is my absolute favorite. I think I have a weakness for dresses reminiscent of Belle. And I love yellow and can’t wear it because it looks awful on me. So this dress on her is like my dream. Absolutely beautiful, classy and vibrant and I’m so jealous.
I like the suit next best, and think I would love Lupita’s dress if it was different colours.

I love GC’s hair! I adore the fact that she just leaves it white. Looks gorgeous.
That dress, well, let’s just focus on the hair 🙂

    • StormsMama says:

I worked with her years ago and my guess is that is a wig. She has a hair person who works with her for everything. And she always always wears a wig. Even when it looks like it’s not, it is.

      • amilu says:

Really? Her hairline looks natural and uneven, and the hair overall looks pretty thin. I guess that makes it more believable.

  4. Brea says:

I LOVE Danai’s whole look and I wish her writing got more love but it was a tough category for plays this year. Lupita looks pretty but the dress is kind of uneventful. Also I need to know Lucy’s secret because she hasn’t aged a day.

Most people on this site knows that I’m not a fan of Lupita but she looks pretty here. Danai looks amazing and beautiful. I think my girl crush from many years ago is coming back for Lucy.

  5. Hudson Girl says:

I am obsessed with Lucy Liu, great actor and she’s gorgeous.

    • CuriousCole says:

Lucy is great, I like how she’s styled and her dress +you can tell she absolutely loves wearing it!

    Love Lupita’s dress.

I absolutely love Lupita N’yongo. I think she is an incredible actress and I wish her all the best for a miraculous career she is having but this dress is meh. I think she has incredible style but this dress is too safe for her especially her beautiful black skin.

….except that Alisons suit seems to have half a coat flap…huh????!…

    • amilu says:

I noticed that, too. I’m not a fan of that detail. At all. I also don’t like her shoe choice.

  9. QQ says:

I LOOOVVEEE how good Lupita and Danai look!!!! amazing

  10. MI6 says:

LOVE Lupita. She is luminous. The most beautiful woman in the world right now.
And Danai’s blue shoes are the end. Period. Beautiful.

  11. Original T.C. says:

Lupita, Danai Gurira and Allison Williams for the win. Beautiful women making designer outfits look good. Love it!

  12. Moon says:

Danai wasn’t and isn’t a costar on eclipsed, she wrote the play

  13. AnnieRUOk says:

Something about Lucy’s dress reminds me of Easter egg hunting, babies, and some fairies too. I wish it had a more flattering neckline.

  14. lucy2 says:

Not usually a fan of yellow, but Danai looks great in that dress. I like Lupita and Allison’s looks too.

  15. Almondjoy says:

Love Lupita’s dress, fits her like a glove. I would have liked a different hairstyle, though.

Danai and Lucy Liu are gorgeous!

Alison Williams is killin it in that suit 😍

  16. LannisterForever says:

I actually like all the looks in this post! Lupita’s and Lucy’s especially.

@Kasier — “Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which is easily one of the most depressing plays ever.” Plus it’s soooooooooooooooooooo long. But Mary Tyrone is one of the greatest roles created for an actress.

  18. Chinoiserie says:

Glenn Close looks kind of that she is wearing a bathrobe I have to say, her look is not very awards show either.

  19. teacakes says:

Danai’s dress is pure buttery heaven, her accessories are perfect and she’s absolutely glowing.

and I love Lupita’s too – the florals aren’t groundbreaking, but they bring a nice freshness to a classic silhouette.

  20. Carol says:

All the ladies, except Lange, look terrific here. Blue is a hard color to wear, IMO, because it can look cheap and washes out the wearer. You have to find the perfect shade of Blue and Lange’s dress isnt it.

  21. Bxhal says:

    I want Lupita’s dress! ❤
