Finally!! and we didn’t even need 9 judges.

    • smith says:

Suck it Texas. Or more to the point – suck it Texas legislators.

Their faux concern over women’s safety because “reasons” was ridiculous. If not, then every medical treatment standalone (the MANY Urgent care clinics, plastic surgery centers, oral surgeons, colonoscopy and dialysis facilities, etc., etc.,) would ALL have to be upgraded or shut down if they didn’t meet the same criteria they were trying to push onto the Women’s Health Clinics (please don’t call them “Abortion Clinics” as this is just a small part of all the support and medical assistance they offer to the community.)

These aforementioned places were never looked at for compliance. It was all just a big ruse.

      • Susan says:

It’s not even a defensible position (that the restrictions are supposedly for women’s health). Women are 14 times as likely to die in childbirth and they are permitted to give birth at home!! You are nine times more likely to die of a colonoscopy than an abortion and you can have a colonoscopy in a doctor’s office. SCOTUS rightly saw through the bullshit cover story by the anti choice parties behind the Texas bill.

    • Pinky says:

And that’s what this election is about–what every presidential election has been about since 2000. Voting for the Supreme Court. They’re the only ones who matter anymore in our (US) government.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Yes, I agree.

      • Kitten says:

        Sadly, this is true.

It gives me great hope to see all the young people in these photos…makes me believe that the future can be better.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

This could not be truer, and I talk with my kids about this all the time. It is of ovewhelming and urgent importance.

      • lucy2 says:

        I agree as well.

      • Alarmjaguar says:

        Exactly! Vote, vote, vote!

      • Tiffany :) says:

So true. And their rulings have such long lasting impacts.

      • Scal says:

I would disagree and say this is why elections matter EVERY time. Every 2 years and not just the big presidential races. These laws are getting passed at the local level by state and county officials. Half the lawmakers in Texas involved getting this law passed in the first place were elected in 2010 when there was low voter turnout.

Local government are truly the ones making a (mostly negative) impact on people’s day to day lives. The supreme court stops some of them, but this shows why it is so important to not just vote for president, but for down ticket races as well.

    • isabelle says:

Conservatives really are getting kicked in the butt when it comes to the rulings.

      • EM says:

@isabelle – not really, I think the sides are about even. The immigration dead lock favored conservatives as did the gun decision. I’d be surprised if we don’t have at least 2 openings in the SC and hopefully Trump will not be involved.

      • Veronica says:

Scalia’s death balanced the ruling, that’s why. Before, the court had a clearer conservative majority. This being said, this is probably the most “liberal” stance the court take in awhile outside of shutting down DOMA. They tend to pretty balanced.

    • Cannibell says:

We needed some good news. I was so happy to read this…..

  2. Lynnie says:

Does anyone think the ineffective republicans will get voted out of congress, or will all this anger fade out. Ineffective congressmen on both sides are such a cancer to this country

    • Luca76 says:

Well it will be tough because of gerrymandering that basically put the fix in for Republicans.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

The goddamn district gerrymandering makes me want to scream. They are like a bunch of fragile egoists who will cheat to win. Disgusting.

      • doofus says:

@notso, it’s the only way they CAN win. cheating and voter suppression.

    • MandyPurr says:

      +1!!!

    • Lilacflowers says:

All politics is local. People don’t vote on how they think Congress is doing; they vote on how they think their rep is doing.

      • lucy2 says:

Yep – everyone says they hate Congress, and then vote their own rep right back in.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

My voting district was gerrymandered as a Republican “safe” seat and when the court challenged it, the Republicans made it even worse.

    • Sadezilla says:

@Lynnie, I share your concern. I am committing myself to vote in the local and state elections, lest Congress give me a rage stroke with their unwillingness to do their jobs. Something has to change, and Congress can’t be counted on to act like responsible human beings. It’s up to the voters.

    • annaloo. says:

SHOW UP FOR YOUR AREA’S MIDTERMS!

Sorry to yell, but here in NV, this is how our local government and congressmen and women were overrun by the Tea Party. The were all voted in during the midterm year

Also, expect the GOP to challenge the electoral college. demographics are no longer on their side so long as they keep propping the status quo of WASP politics.

( I will say this tho– millennial GOP are a very interesting group today bc they seem to be on board as their left wing counterparts for social issues..it’s strictly what is financial that the separations appear…)

      • Lynnie says:

I feel you on the millennial GOP thing. My best friend is one of those, and she’s absolutely disgusted with the way the GOP is now. That party is in for some interesting times.

Thank you for all the insightful replies everyone! =)

      • Veronica says:

I suspect more “moderates” in the United States would vote Republican if the current GOP hadn’t been highjacked by the high horse morality politics of the neocon movement. Plenty of people support limiting the size of the federal government. What they don’t support is the backhanded usage of the government to intrude on people’s lives when it comes to issues of gay marriage, reproductive rights, and minority freedoms.

      • DiamondGirl says:

It’s more than millennials – even older Republicans are conservative only on fiscal programs, but quite open on the social topics. That’s the only positive of Trump, that he wiped those fanatics out of the field.

  3. aims says:

When are these anti choice people going to realize that a woman’s body is her own and the supreme court has said that more then once. Quit injecting your religion into my own body and life.

    • TessD says:

Amen! Hands off of my body – it is MY business.

      • saras says:

Women need to have equal agency over themselves just like men. Stop interfering with women’s intimate decisions! If men could get pregnant they would have abortion pill vending machines!

      • Who ARE these people? says:

If men could get pregnant, a) the state of contraception would be so much further advanced and b) “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” would be covered by Kanye West.

      • saras says:

        Yeah so contraceptive wonder and
        Wha wha will yah
        still luv uv mayyy
        2 2 2morrowwwww
        Lol

    • SusanneToo says:

To answer your question, they are never going to realize it. It will be a continuing fight, never a settled issue. Now if they would only apply that “safety” issue to guns….

    • Veronica says:

Honestly, I don’t care if somebody has a legitimate ethical concern about abortion. I just wish they’d stop pretending it’s about taking care of women. Banning abortion will not stop abortion. Banning abortion will just push it into illegal back alley operations and desperate attempts at homemade remedies that will create far uglier scenarios.

      • aims says:

Agreed. Abortion will always be and I refuse to allow women to be shamed and put in dangerous situations to get one. We can’t go back to that. Also I’d like to add, when a woman decides that want to get an abortion it’s a thoughtful decision. They shouldn’t be second guessed or put on a waiting list. Their decision needs to be respected. It also drives me crazy that for whatever reason or circumstances that has woman pursue their right to an abortion they have to be harassed and shamed. Meanwhile, the guy gets off free and clear. It’s BS.

      • Veronica says:

I can understand counseling services for women getting an abortion because it *can* be an upsetting experience for some people depending on the circumstances, but otherwise, yeah, I agree that they need to cut the patronizing BS and stop making women run circles around getting them. (I also fully support arresting people’s “freedom of speech” when it comes to the kind of harassment and abuse I’ve seen go down at abortion clinics, but that’s not a fight I’m going to win.) I’m sure there are a minority of women out there who get abortions right and left without concern for themselves or the life they could potentially carry, but my feelings are a.) whatever is wrong with that person, a kid sure as shit isn’t going to fix it, and b.) why the hell would you want to put a child in the care of somebody that careless and with so little regard for life in the first place?

    • Erica_V says:

What’s really funny to me is the anti-choice people do not realize that even though they may not recognize abortion as an option, the option exists so they are still making a choice to have the baby.

  4. Marty says:

As a Texan and someone who is pro choice, I’m was extremely happy to see this in the morning.

    • Angelica says:

Fellow Texan here! +1 to what you said.

    • tx_mom says:

Mother of daughters here. Couldn’t be more relieved!

    • hplupoi says:

Texan here too…I am more center/right than most people here but I agree old dudes have no business telling women what to do with their bodies. What bugs me about the religious right is they want to force people to have these babies and then when they do they want to slash Medicaid. I have a daughter and I would hate for her to live in a world where she can’t have a say over her own body.

  5. Jenns says:

Between the GOT finale last night, this ruling and a long weekend coming up, I going to call this a good Monday.

  6. fee says:

I live in Texas and I am SO SO SO SO glad to see this ruling! If I am ever in a position where I want/need an abortion, it should not involve having to travel hours and hours and pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars to get one. It is a big win for pro-choice women (and all women really) in a state where women’s rights are fought against every step of the way.

  7. Angelica says:

Wait, how is R+L=J any kind of confusing? Of course he isn’t robert’s son, Robert would’ve worshipped and legitimized him stat. He has to be Rhaegar’s.

    • Rachel says:

Yeah, I’m wtf’ing that theory. Robert had a score of bastards and the only person they had to fear was Joffrey. And Robert was STILL mourning Lyanna the entire time he was on the show. No way Lyanna would have warned Ned against Robert if Robert was his father. However, Robert DID order the death of every Targ heir, so her fear was very legitimate for Rhaegar’s son.

Also with the other GoT link, how does anyone think Tommen’s death was the saddest of the show?? See Hodor. See Wun Wun (my god! The last giant!). See Grey Wind. See Rickon. See Mance Rayder. See pretty much anyone who’s died on the show who wasn’t a Lanister or Ramsey Bolton.

      • Northern_Girl20 says:

R does not equal Robert .. Its Raegar Targearian. He and Lyanna ran away together. Robert went to war to get her back from him… he was also Danny’s brother and the mad king’s son.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Totally agree. Plus I don’t think Lyanna ever had sex with Robert Baratheon. They were only engaged.

    CONGA LINE STARTING NOW!

  13. Barbara says:

I am soon to be 78 and I am happy for this decision. I have 2 single granddaughters in their 20’s who I informed when they were preteens about the benefits of planned parenthood. (actually lifted the curtain from what the parents wanted) They assumed they could keep them “pure”.
    Knowledge is power.

  14. Neelyo says:

This is great news! Now Planned Parenthood can open up that abortionplex next to the Houston Galleria.

    • Colette says:

Awesome! now I don’t have to drive to the Planned Parenthood clinic on the Gulf Freeway.

  15. frosty says:

I stay off GoT threads the morning after to avoid spoilers

  16. Carol says:

Finally some great news! Please, let this be the beginning of a roll-back in the anti-choice movement.

    • Fire Rabbit says:

I pray for Ms.Ginsburg health, happiness and wisdom everyday. No joke. We need her to hang in there until we can get sane, ethical and serious, hardworking representatives back in Congress again.

  18. Sadezilla says:

Thank goodness for this ruling! There is more work to be done, but progress is badly needed here, and this is progress.

  19. Naddie says:

1- This is my dream in my country, but it just won’t happen. 🙁
2- This lovely young lady looks like Hailee Steinfeld.

  20. tallo says:

Thank goodness there’s some good news for a change. I’m hoping some day in my country women will have the right to abortion instead of having to travel to another country. People need to stop being obsessed with the fetus and let women have autonomy over their own bodies.

  21. GingerCrunch says:

    Huzzah!!!

  22. PoliteTeaSipper says:

There is a possibility that my husband and I might have to move to Texas. I told him last week that if this ruling went the other way, we would have to budget for me to travel to another state for an abortion if our birth control methods all failed. Absolutely ridiculous that we would even have to consider going to such a hassle for private medical decisions that should only be between me, my husband, and my team of physicians.

  23. Lindy says:

I live in Texas (though I’m not by any means a Texan) and the faux concern for women’s health that this sham set of regulations represented made me feel angry and frustrated and demoralized. Today’s ruling was fantastic, and the way RBG blew through the fake “we care about women” rhetoric was refreshing and fearless.

  24. koolkitty says:

YAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! I was really getting worried about this!

  25. Veronica says:

My favorite part about this ruling was reading the dissent, mainly to see Clarence Thomas’s usual meandering word salad. I was not disappointed. Even more glorious in contrast to the other two dissenting justices who at least managed to make cogent points.
