Michelle Obama made a beautiful, historic & emotional speech at the DNC

I was surprised when I learned the line-up for Day 1 of the DNC in Philadelphia. They packed some big-name speakers, from Cory Booker to Elizabeth Warren to Bernie Sanders and yes, First Lady Michelle Obama. It’s always exciting to see MObama speak on a national stage, partly because she’s one of the most beloved and popular figures in the Democratic Party. And partly because we’re already sad and nostalgic that we won’t have her as a FLOTUS anymore in another six months. But after Michelle made me cry with her speech last night, I have to wonder: does anyone else believe they should have saved MObama for Day 3, or even Day 4? Because poor Liz Warren and poor Bernie Sanders, they had to follow Michelle’s excellent speech, and for real: it was the best speech of the night, possibly the best speech of the convention. I love Liz Warren and even I felt bad for her because she had to follow Michelle. Here’s FLOTUS.

What’s amazing is that she dismisses Donald Trump thoroughly without even saying his name. That’s an art! But this speech was full of amazing quotes. This is a favorite: “How we urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language that they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level. No, our motto is, when they go low, we go high.” Here’s another great quote: “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great. Because right now this is the greatest country on earth.” And this: “I want someone who understands that the issues the president faces are not black and white and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters. When you have the nuclear codes at your fingertips and the military at your command, you can’t make snap decisions. You can’t have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out.” I can’t even type the line about living in a house built by slaves. *sob* What a compelling, brilliant and amazing woman.

Speaking of brilliant and amazing women, here’s Liz Warren’s speech too. It wasn’t as emotional as Michelle’s, but I will never fail to be amused at Warren’s utter contempt for Donald Trump.

  1. Pinky says:

“Leaders like Hillary Clinton who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those cracks in that highest and hardest glass ceiling until she finally breaks through, lifting all of us along with her….

“That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.”

It was one of the best speeches I’ve seen anyone give in my lifetime. Got choked up. I know Melania was furiously scribbling down notes. But she does not compare. No disrespect, but our current FLOTUS is in a league of her own.

      Michelle Obama 2024 <3

      Let's make it happen!

      • SusanneToo says:

        MObama/Warren 2016, if only!

      • Neelyo says:

Doubt it. I think after the last eight years she wants nothing to do with politics anymore and who’d blame her.

I think she’ll still continue to work for charities and such, but public office not so much.

      • Neha says:

Accordinng to Jon Faverue, Obama’s ex-speechwriter, he would bet a lot of money she is never going to run for office. I bet she’s sick of politics and just wants a normal, quiet life after Obama leaves office. Can’t blame her. It’s ridiculous what they have had to deal with.

      • Snappyfish says:

She commands respect & adoration. Last night she mic dropped the #DNCinPHL So brilliant. I will sincerely miss The Obama’s as our First Family. They have brought pride, dignity & respect back into the White House

      • notasugarhere says:

The job nearly killed her husband, I don’t want that happening to her. Esp since she doesn’t seem to want it.

I want her to continue on the global stage. UN position? Running Invictus Games or Sentebale? She and Harry are buddies. Let’s keep that going. They could be a power friendship that globally enacts great change.

      • Annetommy says:

Great summary Snappyfish, she’s an inspirational woman and a great role model.

      • mee says:

She’s such an amazing and inspirational person! Although she probably won’t run for office, she SHOULD give the speech at every DNC from now on.

    • Sparkles says:

Absolutely fantastic speech. When she speaks, you actually BELIEVE what she says because SHE BELIEVES what she says. What a stark contrast to that Bot that spoke last week. Brava Michelle!

      • mandy says:

THIS!!!!! She exudes sincerity.I Love her!!!!

      • Megan says:

I was sobbing I was so moved by her words. She is incredible.

      • nicole says:

Completely agree, this women is an amazing speaker with real emotion, love everything about her, she is going to be missed. Imagine Melaaania Trump as first lady, i cant, i just cant.

    • hogtowngooner says:

“today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves”

That line gave me goosebumps. Even if you don’t agree with President Obama’s politics, I can’t believe people have such vitriol for such a smart, accomplished, graceful woman. Yet, she rises above it all, with dignity and poise. I’m going to miss her and her husband so much.

    • Tiffany :) says:

One of the best speeches EVER!

    • Aren says:

What an amazing woman. I’m crying now.

    • allison says:

Even my normally very stoic husband who not into politics at all was like “wow”.

It was a beautiful speech. The only one I think that could (maybe) top it will be her husband’s.

      • mandy says:

IMO she is far better speaker than her husband- she manages to hold my attention the whole time she is speaking.

      • Original T.C. says:

I gave up trying to stop the tears flowing listing to Mrs. Obama. Such an intelligent, graceful and sincere speaker. Prez Obama has always praised her as his secret weapon and his better half! From this speech, it’s obvious that she can also become Hillary Clinton’s secret weapon. Rock on FLOTUS!

    • Thaisajs says:

I got choked up at that line, too. Because it’s true: whether you like her or not, Hillary Clinton is poised to break the biggest glass ceiling in our country. And that’s a huge, huge accomplishment. Women don’t have it easy in the working world and her victory would be hugely inspirational to the next generation of women.

    • anniefannie says:

This is why I love this site… a much needed respite, in the despair of living in Kansas. ( don’t judge )
The First Lady’s speech made me sob. I insisted my 8 year old watch and she clutched me and said Mommy why are you crying…she’s wonderful? Ohh to be young again!!

      • Mari says:

I agree that this site has been a respite. I was so moved by MObama’s speech and it’s great to see so many who appreciated it, too. She knocked it out of the stratosphere. Proud of our First Lady! If, with no political aspirations of her own, she likes Hillary, count me in! (I was already in, but she is persuasive!)

    • Ronaldinhio says:

      100000000++++

      She is an amazing woman

    • Cookiejar says:

While the symbolism definitely stands (and I’m beyond curious on what is original and what additions were done when) the white house actually went through extensive refurbishment.

An interesting page in its own right, just eerie of seeing the interior stripped bare, with no floor, ceilings or walls.

      Thought I’d share.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Reconstruction

      • Hazel says:

Interesting! I had no idea. ‘Dismantled & rebuilt’ sounds like a lot of what was ‘original’ was retained. IIRC, the original original was burned to the ground by the British.

    • mary mary says:

Yep spouse was wiping tears from his eyes. Aww.

Donald Trump’s aides and “speech writers” are taking notes for Melania’s next “speech” reading 🙂

  2. minx says:

    FLOTUS moved me to tears.

    • Little Darling says:

Right? I was moved to tears the first time, the second time, the fifth time I watched it.

Michelle Obama just keeps getting better and better. At everything.

    • Cdoggy says:

Me too. It was honestly one of the most moving and compelling speeches I have ever heard. It will be remembered in history books and quoted by others (Melania) for years to come.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She’s just awesome. I wish we candidate with half of her intelligence and integrity.

    • Crowdhood says:

GNAT I’m with you. I would not choose Hillary if the alternative was not nuclear war epic spray tan meltdown. But I wish either option had the clarity, vision, honesty and poise as FLOTUS.

      • Cdoggy says:

What she said about how dangerous his “thin skin” could be was spot on. And scary.

      • Snazzy says:

“nuclear war epic spray tan meltdown.”
So funny, but so so true, sadly

      • Fallon says:

Agreed with GNAT and Crowdhood. Michelle Obama epitomizes grace and class. She is compelling and straightforward. I wish we had better choices this election, and I wish someone like her was one of them.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Well said, and funny.

    • Betsy says:

You know, I know you don’t like Hillary, but there’s really no need to insult her intelligence or integrity when accord into the people who have worked with her she is incredibly intelligent and a person deep integrity. Frankly I am beginning to take the constant jabs personally.

      • Jayna says:

        #I’mWithYou

I’m proud to be a Hillary supporter and admire her.

      • Crowdhood says:

@betsy- who was insulting her? I genuinely do not think Hillary is a good candidate, I don’t think that is an insult but simply my opinion. I do think she is a better candidate than Donald Trump and thus I will vote for her. If people can’t be free to express opinions that differ from yours than you are no different than those spewing hateful speech in other parties.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Betsy
It’s pointless for you to take my opinion, developed over YEARS of living with the Clintons, personally. I’m as entitled to my opinion as you are to yours, and I will thank you not to say otherwise. It has nothing to do with you. I am a Democrat and I have a huge problem with Hillary’s integrity, as does EVERY other Democrat I know personally. I think it’s better to acknowledge her shortcomings and give reasons to vote for her anyway than it is to whitewash her history and blame HER actions on Republican persecution. At least I’m objective and honest about it.

      • allison says:

Paul Begala lost it a little last night on CNN when Trump supporter Jeffery Lorde made a crack about Hillary being responsible for the Chris Stevens death. I was so happy when he slapped back about 66 deaths due to embassy attacks under GWB and zero inquiries. HRC is not a perfect political figure, none of them are , but there has been a witch hunt against this woman since day one and I am really, really sick of it. #iamwithher #ivebeenwithher !!!

      • Twodollars says:

Man, that was an amazing speech. They put it far away from Hillary and Tim Kaine’s because neither of them are capable of giving a speech even 1/100th as good as that.

The Obamas have spent 8 years being classy, incredible role models and leaders. Whichever of the terrible candidates we have to replace them will be a huge step back for this country.

      • anniefannie says:

Amen Allison! The scrutiny on Hillary has been a long running shill game of the GOP that unfortunately has stuck. No one that’s been in politics that’s fought for devisive issues is going to come out unblemished but the measure of attacks on her have been unwarranted. I’m mystified as to how she keeps a game face and marshals on but will be forever grateful in the face douche-bag Von hair piece!!

      • nicole says:

Betsy, I admire Hillary as much as I admire Michelle, both smart and well spoken women, and its great that we have them, when you look at what is on the other side, we are lucky.

      • Tiffany :) says:

” I was so happy when he slapped back about 66 deaths due to embassy attacks under GWB and zero inquiries.”

Wow, I haven’t heard it laid out like that before. Interesting!

      • allison schaffer says:

Did a little reading this morn to make sure…13 attacks and 60 deaths..according to politifact.com…

Filed under things that make you go hmmmm…

      • Betsy says:

GNAT, I’m not as old as you, but I have not lived Clinton-less.

I also didn’t say anything about right wing talking points in my post, but since you brought it up – many of the points that you have made about Hillary do sound like talking points. She’s not perfect; I doubt anyone thinks that. But according to people who know her, including Republicans, she is a person of deep intelligence and integrity.

  4. Maya says:

Wow these two ladies are amazing and Hillary, another amazing woman, is lucky to have them on her side.

    Keep breaking those ceilings ladies..

  5. Aussie girl says:

It was an amazing speech. Both her and the POTUS excel in public speaking. You guys have been lucky to have Michelle, I don’t think you could imagine a better First Lady.

    • shoochai says:

We analyzed her speech this morning in the public speaking class I’m teaching. I was so excited this morning to have something this fresh and great to use! I almost cried again when I played it in class. The only thing that could have made it better is if the class wasn’t (1) at 8AM (2) during the summer…

  6. mia girl says:

    First Lady Michelle Obama slayed.

    • Mia V. says:

      Now ladies get in formation.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

This is what happens when we Let Girls Learn: women like Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren, and Hillary Clinton.

As an aside, Hillary’s ad showing kids watching Donald Trump’s worst soundbites just came on TV. Chilling and appalling. I am not totally pro-Hillary, but after seeing that, I cannot imagine how anyone in their right mind could vote for the Morally and Financially Bankrupt Oompa Loompa.

      • pinetree13 says:

That commercial almost made me tear up. The part with the young appearing to be latina girl and what Drumph said about Mexicans. I don’t know why but that just got me in the feels all of a sudden. I watched it on youtube and at this time it had around 6000 thumbs up but around 8000 thumbs down.

  7. Farah says:

Those whiny Bernie Bros who yelled “WE TRUSTED YOU” during Elizabeth Warren’s really got on my nerves. She’s on your side. She agrees with Bernie on 99,5% issues.

I hate that the Bros have taken over the narrative from real progressive Bernie supporters. Bernie changes the race. He didn’t win, but he helped shape the party. He’s a movement, and that means being bigger than a single person. A poll showed 90% of Bernie are going to vote for Hillary.

Someone pointed out that since Bernie fans skews so young, they don’t remember the horrors of a Republican president. That’s so true.

    • minx says:

They don’t remember 2000 at all, evidently,

    • Jayna says:

      All true.

Many of his supporters in the audience were young college students and their first election primary and so passionate about a candidate. He brought that to the youth, which is a wonderful thing, and I get being heartbroken over him not being the nominee. But what they are doing at the convention,, the continual disruption, is so immature, even after he begged them not to throughout the day earlier. I have no excuses for the older Bernie supporters out in the audience doing something so egregious like trying to ruin Elizabeth Warren’s speech. Grow up.

    • lilacflowers says:

They also don’t remember that Warren never endorsed Bernie. In fact, whenever asked, she dodged the question. She told no lies.

      • FingerBinger says:

They don’t remember she didn’t endorse Clinton either. She stayed neutral.

    • Kelly says:

Most of the younger Bernie supporters would have been in elementary school during the GWB/Cheney presidency. I graduated high school in 2003, shortly before the start of the second Iraq war. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the messy 2000 election and the GOP’s hard tilt to the right on women’s issues have made me a lifelong Democrat. This country can’t afford another warmongering GOP president.

The older Bernie supporters who haven’t gotten behind Hillary as the nominee I just don’t get. They either were behind his absurd cult of personality, weren’t really Democrats, or have a more nihilistic political temperament. I will say that having lived in some very GOP dominated areas in the US makes you more pragmatic and less interested in ideological purity as a Democrat. I think some were disappointed that Obama was progressive and liberal enough, but there was only so much he could do with an obstructionist GOP Congress during most of his administration.

      • supposedtobeworking says:

I think the older ones remember all the inquiries into things touched by Clintons from Arkansas to DC. I think the Clintons have been complete opportunists for their political ambitions. None of this takes away from Hillary’s intelligence and political acumen, but does leave people with doubt and concerns about her integrity. I think she had big ambitions, for the right reasons but has walked a fine line to get there.
The Republican party has been dogged in its witch hunts over the last 20 years, so there is a lot of animosity to Hillary, even though there hasn’t been anything they can be charged with. This doesn’t mean she hasn’t been manipulative and shady, for lack of a better term.

    • hogtowngooner says:

Exactly. I voted for Bernie in my primary, and while I’m not as wild about Hillary for God’s sake she’s better than that thin-skinned buffoon who will put a would happily throw us into WW3 to feel like a tough guy.

Also, not only is there a Supreme Court slot open, it’s highly possible that two or three more justices would retire before the 2016-2020 term is up. Just think about what kind of slimeballs Trump would nominate. The American people would be saddled with that for decades.

To throw your vote away because you’re pouting your guy didn’t get the nomination is incredibly short-sighted. Bernie started a conversation that will continue through to the next election and beyond. The Bernie Bros booing at the DNC are immature and only serve to embolden Trump supporters who think they’re all a bunch of childish millennials.

    • Twodollars says:

Some polls are showing Bernie supporters voting in a much lower % for Hillary. She still hasn’t sealed the deal. Plus, there was the WikiLeaks which showed the DNC was actively working against Bernie when they were supposed to be neutral. I understand their anger and I think the Clintons have done a piss poor job trying to unite the party. They keep saving it is all up to Sanders. It isn’t. Obama had to win over Hillary supporters in 2008 and Hillary has to win over Bernie supporters. Platform language isn’t enough.

I did get a laugh out of Rachel Maddow just not being able to understand why Bernie supporters still don’t support Hillary. It’s a trust issue. There is a reason that she has the lowest trust #s of any presidential candidate since polling began.

I’ll vote for Hillary but she is certainly doing everything possible to alienate me and other progressives along the way from hiring Debbie Wasserman Schultz on to picking Tim Kaine as VP. She’s better than Trump but that is a low standard to hold a Dem to.

      • Betsy says:

The emails haven’t shown the DNC actively working against Bernie. They just haven’t.

    • EscapedConvent says:

I agree. Very well-stated. I remember my first election,
and how I thought the world would come to an end if my noble candidate didn’t win. And he didn’t. This kept happening until I got completely discouraged and depressed about the way things were going. Then The Obamas came along, and I felt my first hope in years.

We just cannot have an orange clown President. God help us if we do.

    • isabelle says:

I’m sick of the men in this country acting like big babies period. me, Me, Me and I’m not the important person in the room anymore syndrome. Sick.of.it. There is a LOT of misogyny behind their butt hurt.

  8. Crowdhood says:

She is an incredible person. I am so thankful for her speech. I hope it was heard by all those who needed to hear it.

  9. Jane says:

This was a “drop the microphone” moment if I ever saw one. She SLAYED it last night.

  10. popup says:

My affection for FLOTUS is beyond measure. She is simply awesome. She is all the goals.

  11. Nancy says:

She was eloquent and breathtaking. She spoke from her soul. Fortunately, her speech came after Trump’s wife, so she couldn’t pilfer it. She would make a great leader. Proud.

  12. amunet ma'at says:

It was a lovely speech. Her comment about living in a space that slaves built really hit home. As a WOC who attended a PWC, the same sentiment hit. The reality that slaves built those buildings on campus and the knowledge that privileged male students brought their slaves to the same building I attended class were overwhelming. By the time I realized that slaves had to stay in the basement during class time, I lost it. It gives you a sense of gravitas that your presence means something. America has not lost her greatness even when people are attacking her, she has simply marched on to assume the legacy of her birth. I loved Obama’s tweet it was #relationshipgoals #blacklove. I will truly miss Michelle Obama as she embodies #blackgirlmagic, she was a positive and beautiful light for a lot of little black and brown girls to look up to as a role model.

    • Kay says:

What a lovely and thoughtful comment. It made me cry this morning!

      • amunet ma'at says:

Oh wow, thank you Kay. It is such a part of my awareness, I seriously do not realize how haunting that experience can be. We are all in this together.

    • lisac says:

You said it better than I could. I think that FLOTUS’s speech will be the best of the convention. I wish we could keep the Obamas for another term.

I was at my grandmother’s house in 2008 to watch the returns. My sis and I wanted to watch it with her. She was born the year before women got the right to vote and she lived to see a woman and a black man running to be the Dem candidate. She was so proud. And when Obama won, we just hugged each other and cried. I will never forget the look on her face when the news proclaimed him the next president. It’s not something that can be adequately described. I just wish that she could have lived long enough see a woman become president too.

      • amunet ma'at says:

You know the 2008 election I cried. I was wearing my UNC Tarheel hoodie pulled over my head and I just wept. The next day, I rolled out of bed and this lightness was in my spirit. I started to dream big that day. I didn’t even know I was dreaming small. I didn’t even realize how much I internalized the glass ceiling, but when Obama won I straight pursued my dreams.

      • lisac says:

        @amunet ma’at
Me too. That was one of the happiest and most hopeful days of my life. You know that there is a glass ceiling and you’ve felt the hard edges of it your whole life. But, I don’t think that you fully feel the weight of it until its broken. At least for me. I’ve never felt freer than the moment I witnessed a black man become president. It meant, it could really happen. We could actually reach those heights and grasp the dream that Dr. King and Rosa Parks and others fought so hard for. That all of us fought for. I won’t let Trump take that from us.

Yay for you pursuing your dreams! That’s the best legacy of all! 🙂

      • Betsy says:

I was at Inauguration and despite having preferred Hillary in the primary, I too cried happy tears at an actual black man being elected to the White House. It has no personal meaning for me, but it was such a wonderful sign of progress (not perfection, but progress).

    • sanders says:

amunet ma’at…fully agree with your comment. Her speech was amazing, wish she was running.

      • amunet ma'at says:

Me too, but it appears that she is a private person willing to be in the spotlight support her hubby. Le sigh.

  13. KatM says:

It was a truly beautiful speech and she made me beam with pride for our country.

  14. Jayna says:

It was the best speech of the night, and I thought the same thing at first, that it should have been the last speech, because how do you top that? I was in awe listening to her. As one news report said, she was Hillary’s secret weapon. It fell like it looking out into the audience as she made her impassioned case for Hillary and as she gave such an inspirational speech about her own experiences and about her children and the future of all children. I did tear up throughout her speech. What an amazing First Lady. And on a superficial note, that dress was fantastic on her. The color was beautiful on her.

I did feel sorry for Elizabeth Warren going after her, as it came off low energy at first. But I can see why Bernie was the last speaker. Bernie deserved the respect of the last speech, and his speech was a important moment for the convention. And I felt Bernie’s speech truly did what it was supposed to, let him have his moment, which he deserved, and then pivot to why Hillary needs to be supported and what is at stake. It was a very important speech as he had 13 million votes and obviously has ardent supporters. And he has made a difference, as he was instrumental in making the DNC platform more progressive by working with Hillary. on them. His Bernie-or-Busters need to heed what he is saying.

    • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Jayna, who wrote: “What an amazing First Lady. And on a superficial note, that dress was fantastic on her. The color was beautiful on her.”

Wasn’t it a fabulous color? Michelle Obama was so gorgeous last night, even her hair was glowing. What a passionate, charismatic speaker! I think she should have followed Elizabeth Warren (whom I love) because she had the audience in the right emotional state for his (attempt at) Unity speech.

  15. Macscore says:

Goosebumps all over, and moved to tears. MObama is *fantastic* – articulate, eloquent, intelligent, humane and charismatic. What a difference to the vitriol-spewing hatred coming from the RNC.
It is breaking my heart that she and Barack won’t be there guiding the ship of state much longer.

    • SusanneToo says:

I feel like crying already. I can’t remember the last time when we had so much grace, class and intelligence in the White House.

    • Betsy says:

Instead of mourning the loss of the Obamas, we can look forward to Madame President and to the Obamas getting out of the world’s tiniest fishbowl. It’s an awesome fishbowl, but I bet Mrs. Obama and the girls might like to feel a little more normal.

  16. LinaLamont says:

    Hillary, Michelle, Elizabeth….. girl crushes.

Gonna miss seeing the Obama family; excited to see the Clinton family.

  17. JenB says:

First Lady Michelle Obama you are a national treasure. I haven’t been so moved by a speech in a long time. And I agree, let’s get to work!
P.S. I was ready to come through the TV if the fools tried to disrespect the FLOTUS.

  18. Susie says:

Michelle Obama is so good, that she had a speech on BOTH conventions!!

  19. Insomniac says:

Can’t add much to what everyone else said, but I really think Michelle Obama might have just won the election for Hillary. She did a better job of talking up Hillary than Hillary has done for herself up to this point.

And I heard that even the Bernie boo-birds shushed each other while she was talking.

    • isabelle says:

Its possible. Bill C’s good speech in 2012 showed a big point jump in the polls after he spoke at the DNC for Obama. Speeches do matter.

‘When they go low, we go high’

This. They have done this the entire eight years and I love that about them the most. They have not responded to any of the mud that’s been flung at them which has driven their enemies insane.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Yes. The Obamas are a study in class, and have always appealed to the better angels in everyone. I’m going to miss them, too.

  21. Tiffany27 says:

    I cried. For real.

    • lucy2 says:

Me too. That was an incredible speech, heartfelt, empowering, impactful, and ON POINT. I’m so proud to have had her as our FLOTUS, and will miss her terribly. I hope she stays involved in public service (after a much deserved break of course).

    • Sparkles says:

Did you see Barack’s congratulatory Tweet to Michelle? That made me teary eyed as well.

“Incredible speech by an incredible woman. Couldn’t be more proud & our country has been blessed to have her as FLOTUS. I love you, Michelle.”

      • amunet ma'at says:

I saw that tweet and was so proud and happy. It’s rare to see a loving, supportive marriage between AA play out nationally. It was a sweet moment that spoke with a 1000 unspoken words.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

Oh man, now it’s got ME tearing up. : 0

      • supposedtobeworking says:

It was the most retweeted tweet last night : )

    • Olenna says:

No lie, me, 3. Tears came out of nowhere–caught my own self off guard. She knocked it out the park.

  22. alexc says:

She is the total package. She represents the very best of this country. An amazing woman and the best FLOTUS ever. Viva Michelle!

  23. lilacflowers says:

She will be sorely missed. First Gentleman Clinton will have a tough act to follow.

  24. Nona says:

I’m no flag waver—we have a lot to fix in this country—but I was so proud to be an American last night. Thank you, Michelle Obama, for your intelligence, grace, integrity … you will be sorely missed. That speech was perfection. The part about her daughters playing on the White House lawn? It makes me cry every time.

  25. Miss M says:

    What an incredible speech! Wow!
    She is incredible!

  26. mellie says:

Say what you want about President Obama, but Michelle Obama is amazing…the epitome of class. I will miss her!

  27. Addison says:

Michelle’s speech was so amazing. Better than anything we heard last week.

As far as those saying the system is rigged. Hilarious! If that were so Obama would have never been gotten the nomination for president. Obama was not supposed to win. He left all the others in the dust with their mouths hanging open.

Sorry Bernie supporters. If the message didn’t resonate it was not because of conspiracies. People spoke with their vote and they voted for Hillary. Just like 8 years ago Obama was first choice.

    • Twodollars says:

There is a big difference between 2008 and 2016. In 2008, from the DNC head down, the DNC was neutral and is pissed off Hillary immensely. They didn’t play favorites. The DNC in 2016 absolutely played favorites from the short debate schedule to scheduling debates on obscure nights so no one would see them. And now WikiLeaks has shown that they also were leaking negative articles/questions to media about Bernie. Bernie supporters have every right to be angry. Now was it enough to hand Hillary the win? Probably not though there is an argument that the debate schedule could have. But, his supporters have a right to be angry. They donated money and time to a race that was supposed to be fair and the DNC was not honoring that. That said, they need to get over it already. We are stuck with two crap candidates and we have to pick one of them and vote already.

      • Jwoolman says:

I don’t think the political parties have control over the slots provided for debates. The networks are reluctant to interrupt popular programming and the ads that come with them, especially since they no longer have captive audiences and people can just flip to a cable show if their fave is pre-empted by dull politicians. . The Republicans didn’t get choice spots either.

Plus nowadays, just go on YouTube and watch debates or speeches whenever you want. There is also this newfangled thing called recording tv shows. The actual tv spot is pretty irrelevant today. People will watch on their phones at their own convenience. The politicians should just tweet links.

Only a few e-mails out of how many thousands showed a small number of people speculating on things that obviously never went anywhere. Obnoxious, apology-worthy, but not really evidence for a huge conspiracy. Bernie got a lot of votes on the same playing field as Hillary, he just didn’t get as many as she did. Unless you want them to run as co-Presidents, somebody has to be selected as the nominee and that’s Hillary. Bernie can do so much more good right where he is in Congress and in the campaign, plus those votes were powerful proof that the issues he raised were important and cannot be ignored by the Democratic Party. He didn’t get the nomination, but he certainly was very successful in gaining influence. I wouldn’t want him wasted in the VP spot, same for Warren.

      • ls_boston says:

$2.00: I was a Bernie voter, too, but never found it that difficult to get Bernie’s message.

I don’t understand what you’ve been reading/seeing if you think that Hillary is of the same ilk as The Donald. I don’t even know how / where to start to refute this. Trump seems to have a disdain for our Constitution in his attempt to establish this new order that salutes at the altar of division, partisanship, IN-equality, misogyny, absolutism and inarticulate anti-intellectualism.

Hillary … okay, her laissez faire attitude with her SoS email handling was appalling; but the fact is that the FBI investigation revealed that Secs-of-State have historically taken these kind of liberties with their emails and that her conduct – although unbecoming – was consistent with past performers. The truth is that she is getting skewered because she is a Clinton. If there is anything I’m not looking forward to in a Hillary presidency it is that it will be a return to a salvo of investigation after investigation much as it was in the 90s. But that’s got nothing to do with her …

  28. B n A fn says:

This will go down in history as one of the best convention speech ever. I have listen to it three times and I love it more and more, I have to admit I shed a tear. On Monday the dem convention started out shakey, , but ended up great.
Thank you Michelle for saying what I have known, this country is great and nothing like the third world like Donald is trying to tell his followers with his gloom and doom nonsense.

  29. Green_Eyes says:

Michelle Obama’s speech this morning on the Political shows this morning was being called one of the best speeches of our time. It was compared to the President’s speech in 2004 & Ronald Reagan’s in 1980. I was in tears!

She is true class.. I noticed The Orange one went after Corey Booker (another moving speech), Elizabeth, & Bernie last night. But, Trump didn’t dare go after Michelle Obama. It definitely was a drop the mike moment.. but you know she has too much class to even go there. Hubby & I agree, one of the most loving, classy, and seemingly approachable First Ladies ever!

    • ls_boston says:

“It was compared to the President’s speech in 2004 & Ronald Reagan’s in 1980.”

Eh? Dubya’s speech? His was considered one of the great speeches of … well, anytime?! Seriously, you could knock me down with a feather if that’s the case.

      • Say Whaa? says:

@Is_boston, Green_eyes is referring to the speech Obama (then Senator Obama) made at the 2004 Democratic Convention that introduced him to the nation.

      • ls_boston says:

Say whaa, thank you for elucidating! That makes so much more sense. I should have been able to put two and two together. But 2004 and Prez led me down a road where, well, let’s just say that your handle paraphrased my state of mind.
So relieved to have the Earth tilt back on its axis.

  30. mazzie says:

    I’m going to miss her.

  31. Bonzo says:

She won the night, hands down.

  32. Nibbi says:

the DNC is already proving to be a balm to my soul after the ugliness, crassness, ignorance, cynicism, and incompetence on display at the RNC last week. i watched that and was like, these are national leaders?, and felt real fear for our country. last night, notably FLOTUS, showed us that there are still thoughtful, intelligent, moral human beings at the helm. may it stay that way

  33. Who ARE these people? says:

Goddess. Hers are the speeches I’ve shown for my daughter when she came home from school or camp, and now this is the one I’ll show my daughter when she comes home from work. Eight years of the best role model ever, in every part of her life.

  34. Kk says:

Yes I’m going to miss her. I am a 32 year old white woman and wife/mom/attorney, and she has been such a role model to me. And all these posts have also made me tear up a little, remembering when pres obama got elected (I could barely watch that victory speech in Hyde Park because I was so scared of snipers). I think whoever we get next will be a downgrade unfortunately, but I’m happy that the Obamas can go back to a more private life. I’m sure they’re ready.

  35. Heather says:

She was amazing, and as the reporters covering it for prime time on the networks said, it was THE speech of the conventions. It made me cheer and it brought tears to my eyes. Michelle is amazing and she is an excellent orator. She had fire and grace and incited people to feel pride in our system – despite this nasty email leak that threatens to derail our election in favor of the Republicans. We Democrats have to strike back and move the people with this convention so that Hillary is back on top of the polls, and Michelle just may be Hillary’s ace in the hole! Bravo, First Lady, you make us all proud!

  36. Jana says:

Regardless of your politics, you have to admit that Hillary and her followers handled (a much closer) loss than Bernie and his people have. I was embarrassed for the speakers to have to deal with booing from fellow democrats and independents. It may as we’ll have been a group of Trump supporters in there, for the atrocious way they behaved. Not everyone can win. Not everyone can get the trophy. Deal with it, it’s called life.

    • lisac says:

I just have to say: that’s not representative of most Bernie supporters. They are an ugly minority. Most of us are reasonable, rational creatures and we have turned our support to Hilary. I’ve already signed up to volunteer for her campaign, after volunteering on the Bernie campaign for six months. Nearly all of the Bernie supporters I know are fully behind Clinton/Kaine now. These Bernie or Busters are an embarrassment to Bernie, the Dems, and to us all. I am heartily ashamed of them. They are not true progressives at all.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

The “not everyone can get a trophy” thing makes one wonder about the impact of everyone actually getting a trophy due to the misguided ‘self esteem’ movement. It would freak me out to think a whole generation is Not Used to Losing sometimes.

As parents, we’ve been known to say soul-crushing things like, “Life isn’t fair” and “It isn’t always about you” and “Sometimes things don’t work out.”

      • Mae says:

I don’t think all that many people got trophies. I’m supposedly part of the generation that got these trophies, but I didn’t even get one if I won. It was ribbons, and no one actually cared about those, just about what winning meant for advancement purposes.

For myself and everyone I know, the self esteem movement basically amounted to letting kids know they can achieve things if they work hard, and that starts with believing that you can do something and believing in yourself, which translates loosely to having high self-esteem.

This myth is a bit annoying tbh. Many (most) people in my generation are familiar with loss, it’s kinda inescapable. So no need to be freaked out . .

    • boredblond says:

It was bothersome to hear those background noises during the speeches..it always comes off as amplified..luckily it didn’t diminish the incredible words and emotion of the first lady

    • Twodollars says:

That is some selective memory there. There were plenty of Hillary supporters who went full on PUMA and launched a series of racist attacks against Obama. Many of them went on to be prominent supporters of McCain. They didn’t boo at the DNC because they had already left the party because a black man beat their candidate.

  37. Luca76 says:

Such a moving speech I love how even all the bros knew they couldn’t mess with FLOTUS because Michelle is a brilliant woman.

  38. meh says:

Why credit Michelle for a speech writer’s work?

    • B n A fn says:

Sometimes it pays to keep your mouth shut so people will think you are a fool than to open your mouth and let them know you are a fool.

    • Ciru says:

Do you honestly think that an attorney with TWO Ivy League degrees has no input at all in her speeches? Are you really that clueless??

    • Breakfast Margaritas says:

I’m sure a speechwriter helped her tweak it, but her sentiments about living in a Whitehouse built by slaves, her interest in doing things for children and her admiration for her husband’s public service are things she has repeatedly spoken about on talk shows, at graduation ceremonies, the campaign trail and various public appearances. Those key thoughts have always been Michelle’s. Frequently president Obama wrote his own speeches. Michelle is an ivy league educated attorney capable of doing the same thing.

  39. Craig says:

I hope Melania took good notes!

  40. Roxane says:

    She’s an inspiration.

  41. Ana says:

Strong women! Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren and Hilary Clinton!

When they go low, we go high!

It was a standing ovation from my husband, my daughter and I in our home. Very proud to have voted for Obam/Biden twice!

    This time #iamwithher #nevertrump #

I also have great admiration for Sanders and I hope we continue his vision.

  42. Craig says:

A bit off topic but I never felt MO cared much for HRC…..remember the 2008 convention when MO made that not so subtle attack on HRC in her speech, saying something like “how can you take care of the White House when you can’t even take care of your own house”…..ouch.

I personally think MO secretly loathes the Clintons, particularly after all the dirt they threw at her husband during the 2008 primary.

    • B n A fn says:

@Craig, did Michelle sound to you like she was phoning in her speech or did you see the conviction of her words. I believe she meant every word she said. ” I’m with her”, end of story.

    • Guesto says:

If the case, all the more reason to admire MO, that she can put personal feelings aside for the greater good. She has shown throughout her time in the public eye, to be a glass half full woman, always focusing on the positive, always refusing to go low, always rising above, always on the side of the things that actually matter.

Knowing what the alternative is, she doesn’t have to like or even respect Clinton to support her. She’s just doing the right thing she’s always done.

    • Jayna says:

That was a hard-fought battle. Emotions are high.

Hillary worked in Obama’s administration and was a vital part of his administration. President Obama very much admires Hillary Clinton and they have a good relationship. I’m sure that eventually spilled over to Michelle. Bill Clinton had a tougher time in the beginning, not wanting her to take the SOS offer. But he came around. Obama was going to have a very tough election for his second term. His numbers were down. People forget that Bill Clinton was integral in going out there and stumping for him. Don’t ever think that President Obama and Michelle aren’t grateful to him.

I found her speech extremely genuine, extremely, and I believe everything she said. I think she came at the speech from an honest place as far as what she wanted to say, because it was definitely not a rote speech that she gave. It was a passionate speech for Hillary.

    • Keaton says:

I think Michelle did have issues with Hillary but changed her mind when she got to know her. Same with the President and many other people who were part of the 2008 campaign.
Michelle Obama is not that good of an actress. She’s a convert.

  43. mire usted! says:

Senator Warren was great but Michelle Obama stole the show!

“When they go low, we go high” has resonated with some people people! She didn’t use Trump’s name but we all know who she was talking about. Her delivery was so effective and touching.
Senator Franken was hilarious too. I’m so thankful he brought the Trump University scam.

  44. K says:

I am truly heartbroken that the Obamas are leaving soon, the country is losing so much. I truly believe when it all shakes out Obama will go down as one of the best most accomplished presidents in history.

But beyond all the political accomplishments our first family represented the best of America and presented our country to the world with class, grace, empathy and intelligence. Michelle proved that all last night again.

  45. Nona says:

Great speech. Especially emotional when she mentioned the ancestors of her race who were slaves. POTUS & FLOTUS recently visited Argentina to support the newly elected president of the country, who by the way, owns textile factories with slave labor along with his wife. But … Business is business. Right? Michelle Obama should act according to what she says are his convictions. Otherwise, she is just a good talker and nothing more.

    • mary mary says:

      “Business is business” Right? Trump
says he will bring jobs back to America. while he is selling his Trump line clothing manufactured in third world countries. Ivanka’s clothing line is also manufactured over seas.

The Trumps need to act according to their convictions as well as every other politician.

  46. Craig says:

@BNAFN, I have no doubt Michelle supports HRC for president, but that doesn’t mean at all she likes her.

    Politics makes strange bedfellows indeed.

  47. Keaton says:

I’ve actually replayed this multiple times. Favorite speech of the night on a night with several great speeches – Elizabeth, Bernie, Cory, Luis Gutierrez, etc.

One thing I think alot of people forget is that Michelle was not a Hillary fan in the immediate aftermath of the bruising 2008 campaign. But when she got to know Hillary and interact with her she changed her mind. That was a full throated PERSONAL endorsement from a no-bullshit woman of integrity. I think that says alot.

  48. Craig says:

@Keaton, I’d like to think you’re right. But where was it ever said or written that MO started to like HRC “when she got to know Hillary and interact with her”?

It’s not like they spent the last 8 years hanging out together or even interacting much.

Like I said I have no doubt Michelle supports Hillary 100% for president. And Michelle has way too much class to air any dirty laundry.

    • Keaton says:

That speech went far beyond “not airing dirty laundry” @Craig. It was a full throated personal endorsement. Michelle could’ve emphasized the threat of Trump and largely played down discussing Hillary. The vast majority of speeches at the GOP Convention took that tactic. Hardly anyone gave a positive personal speech about Trump. They simply attacked Hillary as a crook, liar, someone who needs to be locked up, etc. To me that says a ton about Trump’s character or lack there-of. Alternatively, Michelle could have emphasized where Hillary is good on policy. That was what Bernie emphasized (and even he got in a few positive personal comments too).
But instead of doing either of those things Michelle went personal.

Michelle is a straight shooter. She doesn’t bullshit. Nor is she an actress or a fraud. That emotion was real. So yeah I think it’s fair to believe she changed her mind about Hillary Clinton. Are the Obamas close personal friends of the Clintons? No. But we aren’t privy to all their interactions. Plus we know the President sincerely likes and respects Hillary after working with her. That’s indisputable. Maybe she connects with Hillary as a former First Lady and mother? Even the biggest Hillary haters admit she’s a good mother who did an excellent job with Chelsea. Maybe Barack’s opinion has influenced her? Maybe her opinion of the Clintons went up after Bill’s amazing 2012 convention speech and passionate campaigning on Barack’s behalf? That all sounds more reasonable to me than believing Michelle is an amazing actress that essentially lied to the American people last night (which is what is implied by saying she secretly loathes Hillary).

I know alot of people are married to the idea Hillary is the evil so it’s hard for them to fathom how their beloved President and First Lady could think well of her. But it’s true.
I think President Obama’s speech is going to be even better.

  49. K.C. says:

Michelle Obama is a class act. I have felt lucky to have her as America’s First Lady these past eight years. I’m going to miss this family in the White House terribly. They’ve accomplished some wonderful goals and have been fantastic representatives of the U.S. I’m just sorry President Obama endured so much unnecessary hatred and difficulty from Congress. More times than not he tried very hard to do right by us—I really believe that.

These last eight years I felt truly PROUD to be an American when I heard Barack or Michelle speak. Their loss will be felt by me.

  50. Ann says:

Can’t we clone Michelle and have her be president of every country? She’s one of the most compassionate and intelligent people I’ve ever seen and comparing some politicians to her actually physically hurts.

  51. Isobwl says:

    Inspirational woman!

  52. Lady D says:

Just want to say thanks for posting Michelle’s speech, Kaiser. I missed the beginning of the show on TV last night, and was just crushed when I realized I had missed her. Michelle is the closest thing to a hero I have right now.

    • Jwoolman says:

YouTube. Whenever you want to hear a speech, check YouTube. Everything seems to get on there somehow eventually. The political parties really should just archive such things so people can access them any time they want. Maybe they already do, but they need tweet links and otherwise advertise their availability. But googling for whatever speech you’re looking for should bring up direct links also.

  53. Guesto says:

The only quibble I would reluctantly have with MO’s speech is the idea that America is the greatest country on earth.

I appreciate where she was coming from and the ‘Trump’ context, but it’s really not.

  54. I Choose Me says:

Michelle Obama’s speech was everything. EVERYTHING!

    • Deeana says:

What an absolutely wonderful, inspiring speech. There were so, so many lines within it that just made me catch my breath!

I was a very early member of NOW. I cannot tell you how proud I am that a woman is finally in a position to become the President of the United States!

Please, do whatever you must do to vote for Hillary Clinton. (Breathe through your mouth, hold your nose, whatever.)

Do not allow our country to fall to the Orange Nazi.
