Celine Dion on fashion: ‘You start thinking about comfort, you’re getting old’

Celine Dion performing live on NBC's 'Today' show
Celine Dion has been bringing her fashion game lately, although she’s still veering into fug territory often. Whatever you can say about Celine’s style, she brings a kind of humor to her looks, so that even when she’s dressed like a 70s nightclub singer she kind of pulls it off. Celine has a new brief interview with Vogue (where she’s wearing a yellow blouse with pleats and ruffles coupled with a black loose bow tie). They ask her some “this or that” questions and it’s cute.

Pajamas vs. pantsuit
Oh my God, it’s got to be pajamas. It’s got to be like a pajama you can go to the Oscar[s] with.

Tattoos vs. piercings
I’ve seen so many people, they have tattoos when they’re young and they get older and the name changes. It used to be Louise and now it’s like Louis. It’s gravity baby, it’s going down. I’ve got to admit that since my husband passed away, I might have his heartbeat [tattooed] on my body for the rest of my life.

Balenciaga dress vs. Vetements Titanic sweatshirt
I love the Balenciaga dresses, but the Titanic was like special.

Fashion vs. Comfort
I don’t care about comfort. The day you start caring about comfort you’re getting old and I’m just starting so I’m not getting old.

When Celine said she might get her husband’s heartbeat as a tattoo she started choking up and it was sweet. She also wagged her finger during the fashion vs. comfort question like she was schooling us. My personal style is more of a hybrid of fashion and comfort. I like wrap dresses, wedge shoes (sorry Kaiser!) and easy to wear pieces which are fashionable and still allow you to move around, sit without having them ride up too far, and breathe. It sucks when you’re in an outfit that pinches or when you get a gorgeous new pair of shoes and then end up with painful blisters. I’m not that old, Celine! Some of us are just practical about fashion.

I like that she seems to find joy and fun in fashion, especially after what she’s been through.

  2. HH says:

Fashion vs comfort – This debate pisses me off on so many levels, not least because (like much in society) it is mostly a discussion among women.

That aside, I love her heartbeat tattoo idea.

    • Wren says:

Exactly. A suit and tie with dress shoes isn’t exactly pj’s but it’s a helluva lot more comfortable than a tight dress, shapewear and heels. I’m always pissed off when men get to wear shoes they can walk in while women are expected to be in teetering heels. Or the whole shapewear thing in general. If I’m supposed to corral my bits and bulges to “look my best” then where’s the man-girdle so I don’t have to see your gross beer gut? If I’m suffering for beauty then I’m grumpy, bitter and generally bad company. I’d rather enjoy myself instead of counting down until I can change clothes.

But I’m 99% about comfort and have been before anyone could remotely call me old, so there’s that. My dressy heels are a pair of cowboy boots so take that for what it’s worth.

“But I’m 99% about comfort and have been before anyone could remotely call me old”>>> Please get a table for 2. I’ll be joining you.

It pisses me off too, though I think for me it’s because so many people consider it an “either-or” situation. You can’t be comfy and look good at the same time? Bullsh*t.

I have lots of really cute clothes that I look amazing in that aren’t sweatpants / yoga pants / PJ’s AND that are very comfortable. I wear what I like, and what I think I look good in, and aside from my bra I’ve never really been moaning about being uncomfortable in my clothes.

  3. Kay says:

Huh, guess I’ve been old my whole life then!

  4. QQ says:

  5. Mrs. Welen-Melon says:

The day I take fashion advice from Celine Dion is the day you dress me in nothing but a gold thong, kill me, leave me butt cheeks up in the garden, and call the paps.

    Signed,
    Helen Welen-Melon, age 59

  6. Ennie says:

Well, it seems I’ve been old forever.

  7. Aussie girl says:

I love, love, loooove celine. Not so much her music but her as a persons. She looks great and watching her watch a fashion show is a must!!! Oh and Comfort wins and I’m old and happy!!

  8. Nev says:

Celine was with Kathie Lee on the Today Show recently for the full hour. Must see.

  9. perplexed says:

I don’t have an issue with her answer because I think she was semi-joking, but I do think comfort allows you to carry yourself more confidently. Whenever I’ve seen women walk in high heels that are too high or a skirt they keep pulling down, they do look a little awkward to me. The ones who look the best in those clothes are that can handle it.

  10. freewhitebaby says:

It’s stupid comments like this that keep women’s fashion uncomfortable. You don’t have to be miserable to look good. Looking good means a woman is stepping out with confidence and wearing things that are age and body appropriate. And tbh, if these pictures here represent Celine’s sense of style, she needs to have a seat and quit trying to tell other people how to dress.

    • LAK says:

Fashion has never been about comfort or even looking good.

There is a difference between function and art. People keep insisting the art be functional when that was and has never been the intention.

Fashion has always been about showing off and wearing ridiculous things that no one else would wear.

  11. serena says:

So then, I must be born old lol.
