Joe Biden officiated a wedding for two gay White House staffers: amazing?

One of the funniest things in the world to me is that Vice President Joe Biden has access to social media. He has his own official VP Twitter and everything, and he’s allowed to tweet! I assume his staff heavily vets his tweets though, or else every day we’d have shirtless selfies and photos of ice cream tagged #YOLO. Anyway, the biggest LGBTQ ally to ever sit in the vice president’s office has done something new and lovely. Joe Biden has officiated his first wedding… and it’s a same sex wedding for two longtime White House employees!

Vice President Joe Biden presided over his first wedding ceremony Monday, which saw the marriage of two longtime White House staffers. Biden posted a photo on Twitter with the message, “Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.” His wife Jill later tweeted, “Love is love!”

The two staffers, Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie, were wedded in an intimate ceremony attended by their families in Biden’s residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory, CNN reports. The Vice President obtained a temporary certificate from the District of Columbia to perform the wedding. Biden publicly endorsed same-sex marriage in 2012.

I love that he did this. I think it’s interesting that the ceremony went down at the Naval Observatory, which is the VP’s official residence. This wasn’t a White House wedding – it was a VP-residence wedding. And I imagine Uncle Joe was the one making all kinds of dorky jokes throughout.

In other Biden news, he’s going to make an appearance on Law & Order: SVU to highlight the testing backlog of rape kits. He’s also continuing his high profile work with sexual abuse on college campuses.

Hahahahahaha, yeah, right? Having this little blurb appear yesterday amidst all of the other absurdity just made me really happy for a moment. Also hiring the first deaf secretary in the White House. I don’t know if they were just doubling down for the Dems or trying to show themselves as being more inclusive, but I think it’s awesome.

      this.

Biden is a good man and should have run for pres but I COMPLETELY understand why he didn’t.

This is great. I love Joe Biden! I also refuse to believe that the Onion’s version of Biden is not the actual, real Biden. And I might actually watch SVU for the first time in years if he makes an appearance.

Crying a little bit right now. He has used his privilege to help millions get closer to equality, and I know he’ll keep fighting in the years ahead… but I’m going to miss this man so, so much.

He’s just such a decent person who’s also been through some sh*t in life, as most of us have. Whatever one may think of his political career (and to me personally it looks quite good, if not perfect), at the very least he has compassion. And then you turn on the TV and instead of someone like him, you see an orange, hate-filled buffoon who spews bullsh*t all day long have an actual shot at the presidency of the United States. I just need to lie down for a moment. If someone can reach the vodka, can you pass it?

How people can hate on this administration is beyond me. The POTUS/VP just seem like such good men. I really hate the idea of trump and his uber conservative running mate coming in and ruining all the good that has happened in our country over the past 7 years.

Love this! And I loved when Mellie Grant did the same in Scandal 😉

I wish he was running for President. I understand why he’s not, but he’d be amazing. With all the crap that’s going on, he makes me feel better about humanity.

One of my proudest moments was being matron of honor at my dear friend’s wedding. They had been together 28 years and married as soon as they were legally able to. Love is love is love is love.

Best, most feel good story in ages. But also, makes me think Joe is providing a good model to Bill C. on how Bill could approach being first husband. Joe has causes he supports, does both fun and serious media appearances, and it works. It just works.
