Emma Stone in Chanel at TIFF ‘La La Land’ premiere: lovely or twee?

Here are some photos from last night’s TIFF premiere of La La Land, the musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Here’s something that really happened: Emma won the Best Actress prize at the Venice Film Festival a few days ago. She wasn’t on hand to gather her prize in person, because she’s been hustling La La Land at TIFF. Emma’s win in Venice does improve her chances for Oscar buzz and a possible Oscar campaign too. So, Emma came into Toronto riding high: people love/like the movie and love her performance in particular. Plus, people love Emma paired with Ryan Gosling for some reason. Like, Stone-Gosling is almost as good as McAdams-Gosling, maybe?

For the TIFF premiere, Emma wore this yellow Chanel dress and a headband. It’s a little bit theme-y, considering the twee nature of the film. Only slender women like Emma can really wear dresses with all of that extra fabric/embroidery around their hips and thighs. If I wore that, you would think that my thighs were coming for your children.

Ryan and Emma also gushed about each other on the carpet and when they were speaking ahead of the premiere. Gosling joked (in front of the Canadian crowd) that “I like working with Emma because I think she’s secretly Canadian. That’s why we get along so well. She’s wildly apologetic for no reason at all.” There IS something vaguely Canadian about Emma Stone, it’s true. We should probably ask for her birth certificate. No, of course not! Emma Stone is ours, Canadian peeps. But you can have Ted Cruz.

    Love her hair color!

  2. lvw2 says:

    its cute…on her.

  3. OSTONE says:

I love Emma Stone! And you can tell that the vibe with them is a sibling vibe, plus they have great chemistry together. I never picture the Gosling as my internet boyfriend so I never obsessed with him + Rachel McAdams.

    • Original T.C. says:

In the pics she looks like a little kid and Gosling looks like an indulgent Dad. I never questioned their pairing until this picture. They look odd as a romantic movie pairing. Maybe because I associate Gosling with being the father of two children and mate to a an older sexy lady.

I was just saying this down below. It’s kind of weird to me that in real life some of these men actually ARE married to older women but on-screen their most famous romances are almost always with younger women. See: Jason Mamoa married to Lisa Benet but Amber Heard now cast as Mera next to his Aquaman/Emilia Clarke on Game of Thrones as Dany to his Drago. Chris Hemsworth married to a woman 8 years older but has he ever had an older love interest.

There actually are some kind of amazing guys who clearly aren’t intimidated by being married a woman a few years older but it’s so rare to see it on SCREEN unless it’s some kind of joke. It’s starting to reach a point where it really does bother me. It’s just so weird that it’s so hard to get romances in movies where the woman is a few years older and it’s not played as some kind of thing.

      • Chinoiserie says:

Well there is the Henry Cavill/Amy Adams Superman/Lois Lane at least.

  4. Myrna says:

    Gorgeous, charming, lovely.
    Perfect as always.

    • Locke Lamora says:

      Completely agree. She’s amazing.

      • Myrna says:

        Isn’t she?
I get such a Marion Cotillard vibe from Emma, no?
And that’s the ultimate compliment from me…because MC is my major girl crush.

      • Minxx says:

Myrna, I also love Marion and yes, Emma has a lot of her charm and freshness but more of an edge. I like her a lot. Cute dress!

  5. teacakes says:

It looks like she’s wearing a barrel. A fancy barrel with sleeves, but still. A barrel.

    • detritus says:

A very pretty, maybe Martha level crafted, barrel.
It’s only because shes super cute that she remotely pulls it off.

  6. Jess1632 says:

    Mcadams-gosling foreva!

What movie did Emma and Ryan star in together before? Because I have no recollection

  7. Lucy says:

Gosling-Stone lover here. Together and separate.

  8. Jegede says:

It’s odd much is made of their ‘chemistry’ because in the videos and stills of Gosling and Stone, he seems to talk of her rather like an annoying younger sister.

Maybe it’s in humour, but she’s more gushing/awe of him while he talks/acts like he tolerates her. That’s how I read it anyway.

By all accounts this outing for them is far more better for their chemistry, than the cringe inducing Gangster Squad.

    • Ji-yun says:

Agree. I don’t think they have chemistry. They work well together but they don’t have that spark with each other. Like you said, it’s a brother-sister geniality rather than a spark.

  9. minx says:

    No.
Although she is adorable as always.

  10. QQ says:

She really looks super cute here, it’s twee but *shrug* she IS twee!…. Also this movie It looks like something I could watch High but I hate musicals with the fire of a thousand suns.. but the palette in the trailers speaks to me… and I DID adore Swiss Army Man and the music there didnt Annoy me (YO that Soundtrack is gorgeous!) I’m conflicted

    • Maire3 says:

I’m not not much for musicals either. But this is the same director/writer that did Whiplash, so I’m hopeful it won’t be “typical”

Emma’s role in Birdman was such a trip. “It smells like f*kcing kimchee!”

    • Moonstone says:

Finally someone that hAtes musicals as much as I do!!

  11. Tiffany27 says:

“Thighs coming for your children” made me legit CACKLE. Thank you Kaiser.

  12. Ji-yun says:

Those eyebrows. Gah. She’s so pretty but the brow phase she’s going through lately is so distracting (and I say that as a fellow sparser-suits-me-better gal who dabbled in a stronger brow before I realised that fashion ain’t sh-t if it doesn’t suit you).

Other than that she looks cute, if overwhelmingly, as QQ noted earlier on, twee.

  13. JeanGenie says:

I think her makeup is horrible; she’d look better with at least half as much on her face.

  14. Jayna says:

I am so glad to see her back with that color hair. She may not have been born a redhead, but it is so flattering on her. She looks great here and pulls that dress off. I’m not a fan of the dress, but it works on her.

  15. Bex says:

People don’t just seem to like this movie, they seem to adore it! A friend of mine saw it in Venice and hasn’t shut up about it since. Must temper expectations…

I think she looks darling in this, even if it is off the charts twee.

  16. Shirleygail says:

They are both adorable. No thanks on Ted Cruz, by the bye. We appreciate your offer but must graciously decline. Sorry about that.

  17. Jusayin says:

I feel the color is washing her out and I don’t like the headband and I think her makeup looks awful. I think usually she gets it right and is usually stunning. This was all a big no for me.

    • Jusayin says:

I wanted to edit my comment but couldn’t. I saw pics on another website and her makeup isn’t bad at all. It seems it looks different in different light or photos ?? She looked beautiful on another site I visited. Still don’t like the headband or the dress.

  18. toni says:

The Oscars this year will be between, Asian actress Emma Stone and “I know the experiences black women go through”Natalie Portman.
Which one is gonna be more insufferable? I say Portman. She’s lucky to have Darren Aronofsky, he makes sure she still has some career.

    • Rocio says:

To be fair, Emma regreted her involvement and she probably said yes because she was/is a Cameron Crowe fan. Natalie Portman..on the other hand…I just can’t.

  19. Kathleen says:

I love Emma Stone but isn’t it sort of a commentary on Hollywood that in real life Ryan Gosling is married to a woman several years older than him (with whom he has two children) and in movies, his most famous “romance” co-star is a woman several years younger than him?

  20. PunkyMomma says:

I can’t wait for Lagerfeld to depart from Chanel. That dress is so bad, it’s mediocre.

  21. Rocio says:

I don’t like the dress per se but it looks great on her and it’s like movie themed, right? Her hair, lengh and colour, is so beautiful. She’s more beautiful than ever. Go Emma! Hope she wins a bunch of awards. Her fashion game never disappoints.

  22. hey-ya says:

…this movie sounds similar to that thing with Terri Garr n Fred Forrest…not for me but good luck anyway…

  23. Xav says:

Emma stone and ryan gosling look great on screen but mcadams and gosling were an adorable real life couple 🙁 sad that they broke up twice

  24. katie says:

The dress is not good. But she makes it look good.

  25. serena says:

Nope, I really hate her oufit, her eye make-up is also too heavy. She’s such a beautiful woman but really can’t dress.

  26. Ankhel says:

She’s so pretty and charismatic, she very nearly makes that silly little dress look great – but it just doesn’t fit right. It pulls and smooshes in odd places. The dress is a reworked 60’s style, those dresses looks best when they skim the body.
