Lupita Nyong’o street style: what do you think of this Kibonen NY dress?

As I keep saying, I’m enjoying Lupita Nyong’o and her sartorial choices for the Queen of Katwe promotional tour. For more than a month now, Lupita has been stepping out in some beautiful head wraps and African-inspired designs. These are photos of Lupita out and about on Monday in New York, where she stopped by Good Morning America to discuss the film. Lupita wore a patterned yellow and purple wrap, with this purple Kibonen NY dress. She also arrived at the GMA studio in a red fringed coat which is just adorable. In the thumbnails, I thought the coat was a robe, but now that I’m looking at it… my goodness, that’s a great autumn sweatercoat. I WANT IT. The dress, I’m convinced, only really looks great on Lupita though.

Meanwhile, have you ever heard of “dream charting”? It’s sort of like “mood boarding” but for your life goals. I’ve heard of variations of dream charting, but I’ve never heard it called this before now. My first thought was that Lupita’s mom wanted her to chart her actual dreams, as in “last night I dreamt I was naked at school again.” But that’s not what it is. Lupita explained to USA Today:

“I was very lucky to have unconventional parents. I remember my mom used to make us do dream charts in the summer holidays. At the time it felt like homework, but she would have us envision things we wanted, in the short and mid and longterm. Then we’d look through magazines and find images that represented those things and we’d stick them (on paper) and we’d put them on the wall. And we’d face our year with those things in mind…No [I didn’t dream for an Oscar]. I didn’t even know to dream for that. I had like, a bicycle – which I never got. But what that taught me is the power of envisioning your own life.”

[From USA Today]

Now I’m thinking about doing a dream chart. Although mine would probably just be photos of Clive Owen?

Last thing… to celebrate the fact that she now has 3 million Instagram followers, Lupita thanked her fans by posting a freestyle rap. This is super-cute.

She looks great, but I still don’t understand why she never wears any Kenyan designers. She has succh a platform to promote them, she could wear them at least once.

I saw the dream chart thing in an Dr Oz episode. I do not trust anythin I saw in a Dr Oz episode.

  2. BeBeA says:

    Omg loves it!

  3. Sixer says:

My dream chart would be a series of dartboards with my top ten annoying things superimposed on them. Then I would throw darts at them.

Oh. That takes it out of the realm of dreams, right? And is a bit on the worrying side because wanting to throw stabby darts at annoying things isn’t really something I should advertise about myself.

I think I will #epicfail at dream charts. Never mind, I don’t go for all that think rich thoughts and you’ll attract riches to you stuff anyway. It’s guff. Sorry!

On the upside, I really like that dress.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Think bigger Sixer, I took up archery this year and it is so satisfying to shoot at the target while imagining annoying people/things/bad cups of tea (weak, too milky) and people who will not co-operate with Build-a-Bear dreams.

      • Sixer says:

Oh, Zapp. I thank you. You make me feel less alone!

      • SilverUnicorn says:

Yes, archer here too. It’s great shooting at targets, right? 😀
(don’t think I’m doing something wrong now, targets are made of paper and straw lol)

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

@SilverUnicorn yes it’s great. I was suffering from bad depression for a year and a half and it was a last ditch attempt at trying to find something to coax myself out of the house and start properly interacting with people again. I am not joking when I say it was life saving for me, I shoot recurve with a really great bunch, mix of adults and kids from 7 years up. I would recommend it to anyone.

      • Sixer says:

I am glad I made this daft comment now because that is a really uplifting story, Zapp.

      • Micki says:

May I add arbalest too? I like the feeling and can bring home my own meat-caveman style if I need to.

  4. V4Real says:

I actally like the purple outfit. She looKs good here. And, no my feelings haven’t changed on her being the prettiest thing ever. I think she’s attractive but not earth shattering beautiful.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I think she’s the prettiest thing ever. Maybe the prettiest young actress working today, along with Carey Mulligan.
But them whenever I see an interview I get the feeling she’s stuck up, ever since the Bafta interview during her first Award season.

  5. Carmen says:

When it comes to clothes she can do no wrong.

    • Megan says:

      She has incredible style.

    • Pansy says:

      Oooooo me too!!!! She’s flawless.
I wish I could pull off a head wrap. I’m super tall, so maybe I could…….can white women wear them without upsetting WoC?

      • Alix says:

I seriously doubt it, Pansy. Wouldn’t even try. Love, love, loving them on Lupita, though. And that purse in the bottom pic — want it!

      • Nn says:

Of course you can wear them! I am a black African woman just like lupita and it makes me sad that social media makes it seems we all think this way when majority of us do not care! Please dont take what social media says seriously, they are a loud minority, that is all. And furthermore, Americans, yes even black ones, do not get to say what is ok or not when it comes to African clothing. They do not speak for us.

      • Annetommy says:

Well said Nn. I think Lupita is so gorgeous and I love this style.

  6. SusanneToo says:

I love the dress. She looks great in it and the headwrap. I’m really looking forward to Queen of Katwe.

  7. Carebare says:

It’s not hard to look good in everything when you have zero breasts (which is not a knock on her but just a fact)

    • Naya says:

It is hard to look great, if clothes just hang of you. She is a toned slender girl with a curvy shape (hips, rounded thighs and apple shaped booty). She couldn’t pull this off if she was flat and straight all over, particularly given how short she is.

      • Carebare says:

Also true, but it’s just a fact that most designer clothing is made for women with small breasts or no chest at all.

      • Justjj says:

Yes I hate being chesty. The older I get, the more I hate it. She looks pretty and classic. I love her head wraps and think they look so cool! But I’m white so appropriating isn’t cool. I wonder what their cultural significance is or if they mean different things depending on how they’re worn? They’re beautiful. She is too. Love the blue dress and lipstick!

  8. Livealot says:

It’s similar to a story board or writing your bio or obituary at a young age, which I had to do. It’s not really a new concept in fact once Pinterest hit the scene and yogis and blogging I thought the concept became on trend years ago…?

    • Naya says:

It has. Oprah mainstreamed this over a decade ago. I think she was calling it a vision board.

    • Fiorella says:

It’s not a new concept no but most parents didn’t get their kids to do them! Know anyone who did?

    • Yup, Me says:

I’ve been doing vision boards for years. I’ve achieved pretty much everything I’ve put on them (with the exception of a winning lottery ticket- yet). They’re a great way to focus the mind and be intentional about your year and actions.

  9. Louise177 says:

I love what Lupita has been wearing during promotion. I love this outfit but not the headwrap. It’s not bad but the others have been great.

  10. LinaLamont says:

Something’s off. Either take off the headwrap, or, wear different shoes with the dress . Although, the shoes look great with the coat.
    Either way, she’s beautiful.

  11. Brittney B. says:

Her body is unbelievable… usually I’m distracted by her face, but that dress is tailored so well!

I’m so excited to see her back in the spotlight. This film looks awesome.

  12. ncboudicca says:

I have a soft spot for Kibonen NY after she was on the Humans of NY Facebook page.

  13. I Choose Me says:

    Love everything about that outfit.

  14. Mar says:

She killed it with that Nas beat! I love this woman. I love how natural she is also. In a world of plastic, she is my breath of fresh air.

  15. iralagi says:

Thinking to copy that head wrap style for my hijab. I hope there’s video tutorial available on youtube.
I’ve always love Lupita’s style. She can do no wrong in my eyes.

  16. QQ says:

Gahhhh She looks like a dream! and so does her skin!! *swoon*

  17. Fiorella says:

I like it all! Those colours are perfect on her

  18. spaniard says:

    Just Wow!!

I would ditch the coat though. The dress, the shades and the head wrap are the most perfect outfit ever. Like a 21th Century Ava Gardner, a goddess.

  19. Laura says:

This woman is gorgeous. Such style and class. The rap is awesome!!

  20. Lbliss says:

    Stunning and beautiful.

  21. Micki says:

I like the dress, the colour is beautiful on her. I don’t like the lenght and I don’t like the shape of the coat either ( for this dress)

  22. NGBoston says:

Like it and looks great with the red shoes. Not everyone can pull of a dress like that but it suits her perfectly.
