Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton at BFI London premiere: cute or unflattering?

Since it’s looking more and more like The Birth of a Nation isn’t going to have much of an Oscar campaign, it’s worth taking stock of what films are going to be discussed in the coming months for the awards season. One of the films on top of that list is Manchester by the Sea, Kenneth Lonergan’s much-anticipated movie starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. These are photos from the BFI London Film Festival premiere of the film.

For the premiere, Michelle wore Louis Vuitton. She wears a ton of LV whenever she’s on the red carpet these days, mostly because she’s an LV model and brand ambassador. As I said last week, I don’t think Michelle’s association with LV does much for either of them, and this dress is a perfect example of why that is. This dress is so… nothingburger. Maybe I would like it more on someone else, but I don’t even think that’s it. It’s just a nothing dress – I don’t find the touch of acid-green offensive or beautiful. The cut is adequate and yet not really flattering. It hangs well but it’s so boring. It doesn’t help that Michelle barely styled this look – she’s wearing zero jewelry, and that clutch isn’t even power-clashing.

I also have something controversial to say about Michelle’s hair: I’m so f—king over this look on her. The white-blonde is TERRIBLE on her. She doesn’t look cool or trendy, which is what I think we’re supposed to think. I’m also pretty much over the short hair on her, although if she had a darker blonde, you would be able to see that the style isn’t too bad.

As for the film… as I said, it’s still on a lot of critics’ lists for one of the best films of the year. It will be interesting to see if Casey Affleck takes any PR-heat for those 2010 accusations of sexual harassment and worse. It will be interesting to see if he gets asked about it all, especially in the wake of Nate Parker’s implosion.

I love her hair. The cut is nice and the colour looks amazing on her. The dress is nice, and I always appreciate when people wear the minimal amount of jewellery. It just looks better.

  2. Macheath says:

The trailer for this film did nothing for me. It felt like I’ve seen this type of movie so many times. I’ve also never really been in awe of Michelle’s and Casey’s acting. They both seem quite limited to me; in that they are good at what they do but don’t step outside that.

That said, I think she looks nice here, smart and cute/presentable.

  3. Boothang says:

She keeps her hair short because that’s how heath preferred it.

  4. Jk says:

LOVE the hair. Like the dress. LOVE the shoes.
The whole look says understated chic to me.

  5. ursula says:

    Try ‘vile’.

Hideous dress that is not beautiful, doesn’t look expensive or luxe, and has not style. Awful color, awful pattern, awful cut.

I hate what high-end fashion has become, or been reduced to, in the past 5-6 years. Beyond macabre.

  6. hey-ya says:

….casey’s gone all joachim phoenix…that look is what gets her parts.. a beautiful woman done up to look ordinary…I’m not fooled but male directors well maybe…

    • Lurker says:

Casey Affleck seems like such a skeevy guy, but those allegations were particularly nasty to read.

Also: Affleck may get asked about the allegations, but I don’t believe it will affect his career much – he’s seen as talented, a serious actor…Hollywood protect their own.

      😒

      • ichsi says:

Ew, I’ve never heard of them before, that’s just disgusting. But you’re right, he did and will get away with it all unscathed.

  7. The New Classic says:

I saw Michelle across a restaurant years ago and every time I see an interview or article with her the first thing I think of is how tiny, delicate, and beautiful she is in person. I like the hair, I think with the appropriate styling it actually looks quite chic and brings out her delicate features. Having said that, I don’t think this is really the right styling.

  8. Hannah says:

My best friend is over at the LFF and sent me a bunch of pics of her on stage in a black outfit. Said she was absolutely stunning irl.

  9. dr mantis toboggan says:

I really like the dress and think she looks great in it. I’m also a fan of the white blonde hair but I think it could benefit from a bit of texture, not the smoothed down look here

  10. I Choose Me says:

I think this is actually really cute on her but it needs accessories. Oh and while she’s been rocking this hair length for awhile, I’m in full agreement that platinum blond is all wrong for her as it washes her out.

ETA. Although a superior actor to Ben, Casey Affleck has always given me major creep vibes.

  11. deevia says:

#Grandma. And that’s not about the dress.

  12. saltandpepper says:

She’s beautiful and they’re both great actors. Can’t wait for the film, it’s going to be a big contender.

  13. vanessa says:

No many people can pull off this hair, but she does it perfectly. She has the face for it. What an elegant woman.

  14. Alix says:

She’s a talented and lovely woman, but as a brand ambassador, she’s a total snooze.

    • ichsi says:

I’d rather say LV is a snooze. I have had my problems with the direction they’re taking the brand and how they’re using their ‘ambassadors’ all year and this is no exception. This dress actually is one of the better ones but it still looks unflattering on a beautiful, tiny woman.

  15. Kate says:

I think the cut sort of suits her, but yes the blonde is way too light. She comes closer to pulling off that color than most I’ve seen though.

  16. shannon says:

She tries really hard not to show her teeth in pics.

  17. Fiorella says:

It suits her! I mean maybe if she had long hair she’d look more pretty /like a teenager .. but I find it really chic and the colour is perfect. Is showing your face unflattering ? 🙁 I feel other ladies much less cute than her are said to be gorgeous and stunning in online comments. The dress is nice too

  18. teacakes says:

I don’t know, she’s pretty with long hair (that saffron Vera Wang at the Oscars is iconic, and everything about her look there was perfect) but short hair really highlights her features. She wears it well tbh.

  19. kimbers says:

    1. Moisturize or limit alcohol bc she isnt aging gracefully.
    2. White blonde is truly boring AF
    3. She’s extremely over rated as an actress and people confuse her in the industry as sophisticated when she’s just another gal with holes in her socks…

    • SwanLake says:

I saw her on Broadway in April, and I left the play with three impressions: she’s tiny; she’s not a very good actress; she’s not particularly good-looking.

  20. Laura says:

I love Michelle Williams…she seems like such a delicate, serene and gentle soul.

  21. Nikki says:

I like her, but don’t like the dress or her platinum color.

  22. Tania says:

Wow, she looks significantly older than the last time I saw her. She looks unwell and her face looks very gaunt.
