Milo Ventimiglia on dating co-stars: ‘don’t sh-t where you eat’

Milo Ventimiglia is currently knocking ‘em dead on the NBC series This Is Us. I’m glad, as it’s a really good show, despite the fact that NBC kind of sold it to us by showcasing Milo’s bare butt in the promo for the show. I was thinking it was going to get its own credit in the titles.

On the show Milo plays husband to the lovely Mandy Moore. They definitely have lots of on-screen chemistry, even with Mandy rocking a huge pregnancy belly on that first episode. Does that chemistry extend off-screen? E! asked the 39-year-old actor about his co-star in the snarkily named segment “A Quickie with Milo Ventimiglia” (Me: If you’re offering, okay, but only if he shaves off that mustache.) Of course, he had nothing but nice things to say about her, saying, “Mandy is one of the kindest, most amazing performers and women I’ve met in my life. She is exactly as I’d heard. She is amazing.” But when the subject of dating his co-stars came up, Milo bluntly replied, “Bad idea—don’t shit where you eat.”

I know, as I’m sure you also do, that you don’t answer a question like that unless you are speaking from experience, and Milo has dated co-stars before. He was romantically attached to his Gilmore Girls co-star, Alexis Bledel, for four years. After that, he entered a relationship with his Heroes co-star Hayden Panettiere. The union turned a few heads in Hollywood as Milo was 31 and Hayden was 19 at the time they dated. Guess Milo finally learned his lesson.

In the E! video, Milo also discussed working on Fergie’s video for “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” which he said was “amazing” but confessed to being “mildly terrified” of doing romantic scenes with the singer while (then boyfriend, now spouse) Josh Duhamel was watching. He also offered up some sage dating advice for the ladies, including, “Be yourself” and “Contribute as much as you’d like to take.” I know, I know, just remember, he’s an actor, not a matchmaker.

Milo continued the press tour for This Is Us with an appearance on The Talk on Tuesday. Inevitably, conversation focused on the butt shot seen ‘round the world. Milo recalled, “When I first read the scene I’m like, ‘This is NBC, I’ll be fully covered and everything. Then when I showed up for our very first scene, first day of working on the pilot I walk into my trailer and I see flesh colored fabrics in varying sizes. ‘Okay that’s the kind of rodeo we’re doing today so here we go.’” Milo tweeted a photo of said “flesh colored fabrics” with the caption “Day 1/Scene 1. Amazing wardrobe choices.”

Mandy Moore was also on the show and recalled (perhaps wistfully) that Milo was eating pizza during the show’s table reads. I’m sure Milo loves pizza (who doesn’t?), but he was actually getting into character, in order to make audiences believe he was just your average 36-year-old 80s-era Dad. He admitted, “This was the first time in my career, in 21 years, where the producers said, ‘Stop working out.’” He must have resumed hitting the gym, because he showed off his toned torso on Ellen last week and that, my friends, was no “Dad bod,” 80s-era or now. Meow. But seriously, watch This is Us. It’s definitely my favorite new show of the season, butt shots or no butt shots.

He’s cute but that tache does nothing for him – it makes him look creepy but i guess its for the show.

    • AnnaKist says:

Your right, Betti – he looks as if he has a squashed caterpillar under his nose. And NOT speaking from experience, but from very close observation, that’s what I always tell people considering falling into a relationship – “Don’t sh*t where you eat.” It’s sage advice.

I really like “This is Us”. Went in with low expectations and was more than pleasantly surprised. It is worth watching and start from the first episode if you’ve not seen it.

On the subject of Milo, loved him in Gilmore Girls. Rory n Jess 4eva!!!

    • Froggy says:

Agree. Definitely worth watching. I watch it with my son’s girlfriend every week and we both love it.

    • AnnaKist says:

Thanks, hnmmom, I’ll have to check if it’s on in Australia, otherwise..BOOOOO!

      • Imqrious2 says:

AnnaKist, if you use Chrome Browser, there is an extension called “Hola” which you can use which will allow you to get an IP address from the US. Then you can go onto the NBC site to watch.

    • Esmom says:

Good to hear. I avoided it because the trailers struck me as cliche and sappy. But I’m always looking for something good to watch.

    • Zuzus Girl says:

Hated, hated him on GG. The new show is decent, have to see how it develops.

    • tracking says:

It’s schmaltzy, but I love it. Mr. tracking does, too.

he is an arse. he abused Alexis… there is a story on Google somewhere. I found this : http://jezebel.com/241717/jackass-of-the-day-milo-ventimiglia

    • Annie says:

      I remember this.
I loved him in Heroes and then reading this story, plus him dating a teen Hayden P always disturbed me and turned me off. The pictures where the fling was confirmed are so gross. Both making out on set and he seems so grabby and so… Pervy.

And now this mustache. I wish more guys knew that facial hair doesn’t suit all of them. Some end up looking like creeps.

    • pix says:

Thank you. Someone needed to speak up about his past abusive behavior. I think he’s gross and if Rory ends up with him in the new Netflix shows I am going to be very angry.

    • HeidiM says:

The Douche vibes are so strong from this guy

    • Eldy says:

He abused Alexis and also began his affair with Hayden when she was barely 17 and he 30.
I still remember how they tried to pass it as “We didn’t hook up until after her 18th birthday” . Riiiiight….

    • Erinn says:

That killed me when I’d read about it. Have either he or Alexis disputed it? I know it’s been a rumor for some time, but it’s not THAT well known either.

He was my first real celebrity crush based on Jess on Gilmore Girls. Like I was swoony over Milo for the longest time. There’s no excuse for that behavior if it’s true (and if nobody denied it, you have to wonder) and hopefully he’s gotten his sh*t together since then, and recognized how garbage his behavior was.

    • Shutterbug99 says:

I’m not disputing the claim, but if I remember, this all came from a Gawker sighting that was sent in by a reader who saw Milo & Alexis arguing on the street. I never read Gawker while it was around, but to use sightings that have been sent in to a site by random passers-by as concrete evidence of abuse seems a bit iffy.

That said, there could be more to this – and it might have been reported on other sites too (I don’t recall). Jezebel is a Gawker sister site, so no surprise that it was also reported there.

I found a link to the sightings: http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/6738063.html

      • Sarah says:

        I remember this.
I think at the time there was a blind item that people believed was about Alexis & Milo having an altercation on the street in NYC, and it was later said that he wasn’t in NYC at the time that it happened.
Lainey Gossip also mentioned that she never heard anything from any of her sources about Milo being abusive.

  4. Lisa says:

I thought for a second he dated Emily van Camp too, but that was Dave Annabel from brothers and sisters… I get them confused sometimes even though I have recently come over to #TeamJess for the GG revival!

  5. Nicole says:

Love the show it’s my new favorite alongside Pitch (created by the same person so they know what they are doing). Just so unexpected how they tackle the themes reach week.

    • notsoanonymous says:

I had no idea the creator was the same for both shows! That definitely explains for me why in my head, I kept thinking… It’s SO weird that two new shows this fall, on different networks, have these really interesting twists in almost every episode.

  6. Shutterbug99 says:

Milo and Mandy have great on-screen chemistry! I thought the first episode of This is Us was a little bit cheesy, but it has definitely grown on me, and I really like it now. It’s filling that Parenthood gap, for sure!

I’m not sure that I love off-screen Milo, I don’t know too much about him, and yet he has given me douche vibes from time to time, but I’ve always liked him on-screen. I definitely had a little crush on Peter Petrelli back in the day, although I had a much bigger crush on his older brother, Nathan – or the sexy guy with the scar – as I used to refer to him. Because scars are sexy. 🙂

    • ladysussex says:

Yeah, I’ve heard “Don’t get your honey where you get your money” but to refer to dating a woman as “shitting”. That just sounds crass and gross.

  7. anna222 says:

See also: don’t abuse girlfriends where you eat.

    • scylla74 says:

This is what I thought… also: I think the analogy in the context with women sound extremly dismissive.

      • Esmom says:

Yes, as far as analogies go, I side eyed it a bit, too. A simple “it’s not a good idea to mix business and pleasure” or something like that would have gotten the point across just fine.

      • anna222 says:

You’re right, I’ve never really stopped and thought why that analogy grates on me.

      • Annetommy says:

It’s crude. And it sounds like he needs an anatomy lesson.

  8. Adrien says:

Mandy Moore is around 5’10”, Milo is a short guy. I know this because I was once a member of the Jess Mariano fanclub. He is taller than her in the pic.

  9. Kiki says:

I like that quote he says, this is why you don’t date your co-stars. Milo finally learned his lesson, but real unfortunate that some of these celeb men would still date their co-stars. Someone should have told that to Michael Fassbender. P.S. I am over Michael Fassbender, I have had enough of him, he can keep his stuck up swedish Twinkle Toes co-star.

  10. I Choose Me says:

I like Mandy Moore and I’m glad she’s back on screen. No real opinion or feelings about Milo. About that flesh coloured sausage sling though. It’s um, optimistic non?

  11. Red says:

I have always LOATHED that expression. It’s so vulgar, and comparing dating to excreta is baffling.

    • boredblond says:

I’m assuming it speaks volumes about his umm, preferences. Always thought it was a gross expression.

  12. Happy21 says:

    I love this show!
I’ve seen him on American Dreams and Gilmore Girls as well and he did absolutely nothing for me and I really disliked him with Rory. That being said, the older Milo totally appeals to me. I liked him with the beard, with the stache, not so much.

  13. poppy says:

ita agree with everyone that doesn’t care for the poo where u eat phrase.
literally meant it is perfectly true. but the way he uses it is gross and says a lot about how he feels about relationships or work. either way meant is wrong.
my gut reaction to the headline was “how bout you just not be a sh*t” (at work or in a relationship).

  14. serena says:

I wonder what went wrong with Alexis Bledel, I was so excited for their romance at the time since I was a huge Rory x Jess fan, lol.
Anyway, he’s so hot! Please cover him more frequently? :p
