Robert Pattinson debuts a scraggly goatee at the NYFF: hot or not?

wenn29684919

It feels like forever since I’ve covered anything having to do with Robert Pattinson. He’s had a very quiet year! These are photos of Rob at the New York Film Festival premiere of the long-gestating film The Lost City of Z. TLCOZ had a million casting changes (at one point Benedict Cumberbatch was supposed to star in it) and it felt like once they actually started production, it took forever to film. But now it’s done and making its way through some film festivals, although the release date isn’t until April 2017. Rob, Tom Holland and Sienna Miller all made it to the NYFF, but the lead actor did not: Charlie Hunnam was stuck in Montenegro filming another movie, but he did send a video message for the audience (which you can see here).

As for Rob… I haven’t seen him with this goatee before. Usually when he does facial hair, it’s the five o’clock shadow – which is probably closer to a two-day growth for him – and it’s all over. This seems like a conscious choice to grow a goatee. It’s okay. It makes him look less “pretty,” if that makes sense. Sparkles has always been such a pretty, delicate-looking man, so I think he feels the need to try to butch up his appearance in whatever way he can.

What else? Rob and FKA Twigs are still going strong – they’ve been pap’d a few times in the past month. While they did postpone their wedding (which was supposed to be last year, then maybe this year), it seems like they’ve been together this whole time. I also find it interesting that Kristen Stewart has been in New York for several weeks, and she’s had a few films premiere at the NYFF too. Do you think Rob and Kristen go out of their way to avoid each other at this point, or do they not even worry about it? I legitimately don’t know.

As for TLCOZ, it was actually well-received, from what I can see. Uproxx and The Hollywood Reporter both said it was a pretty good movie. On the red carpet, Rob talked about his terrible facial hair in the film – he had a full, bushy, gross beard – and Rob said: “Oh god, it took forever to grow. I was so happy to get rid of it. It was disgusting, the whole thing was disgusting. And I had lost so much weight by the end of the shoot — nearly 35 pounds, we weren’t eating the entire time — that when I shaved it off, it was like I had no bottom half of my face. I was like a small, strange squirrel.”

Bonus pics of Sienna Miller in a truly heinous Prada ensemble.

i never thought Kristen would end up working more between the two. She’s clearly the better actor to

    • Luca76 says:

And she’s not a very good actor either so that just goes to show how little talent he has. That being said I think usually men’s careers peak in their mid to late 30s so he is probably going to be fine. They both have a pile of money, good looks, and nominal talent and a loyal fan base, they will both always be working .

    • Another Anne says:

I think he very deliberately pulled back, and is selectively choosing small arthouse films. He knew it would take some time to shed the Edward Cullen character and is going out of his way to avoid typecasting. He’s been avoiding romantic leading man roles like the plague. Probably a very smart strategy.

I actually think he’s shaping up to be quite a good actor, judging by his more recent roles. He’s shown quite a bit of range by choosing very different parts. That’s the biggest complaint I have with Stewart. She can be good, but her range is narrow.

    • Anname says:

Yes, he is definitely going for character actor parts, not traditional leading man parts. It’s nice to see critics recognize what he is capable of. The common theme in his LCOZ reviews is how he just disappeared into the character. That’s the highest compliment you can pay to the guy who was Edward Cullen.

    • mia girl says:

Having watched many films with both these actors I have to disagree that she is a better actor. If anything, neither of them are quite good yet (yes that includes her performances in Clouds of Sils Maria and Still Alice= one note).

I admire them both for taking parts in indie films, working with talented directors and rejecting a career path with big box office films.

But I get the sense with the parts she’s been choosing that she is mindful of working with directors whose films are often in mainstream awards contention. Like she’s looking for that “one part” that will propel her upwards into awards. From that perspective I think she currently she has more of traditional career plan/goal than he does.

Pattinson is picking a variety of parts working with directors who lean more art-house indie and up-and-coming directors with critical success. These choices to me seem more about learning and improving that about landing a showy part. We will have to see if his acting has improved as these films begin to be released.

I also agree with poster above, as a male actor I do think he can have a slower pace with trying to find success again bc male actors peak in 30s and 40s. Stewart has to hit while the iron is hot. I just wish she would take some formal acting classes. It would benefit her.

      • D says:

Mia girl, she’s winning awards , getting terrific reviews and getting great roles.

Why on earth would she take formal acting classes when she’s this successful? It makes literally no sense.

      • mia girl says:

D – Makes total sense to me and a lot of others who don’t think her acting talented has caught up with her hype. Maybe it will soon. It makes no sense to me why you believe she wouldn’t benefit from real acting classes. They are only going to help make her a better actress.

And by the way, the majority of great actors continue to work with acting coaches throughout their entire career.

      • D says:

Sorry to say that you really don’t matter. You are never going to be a fan and she will never please you. Her career is as good as it has ever been. Her reviews speak for themselves.

      • mia girl says:

D – ha! Don’t know why you take opinions so personal.

Sure guess I don’t matter inside your fan bubble. I don’t wish her anything bad. I’m just not on the “she’s a great actress train” right now.

        Good luck to you.

    • notlistening says:

      lol, gtfo.

    • FF says:

Kristen has a very short timeline on HW finding her attractive in a way that they want to sell. She isn’t going to be young and nubile for long, hence the more work now. (Even less time on that if she’s into substance use.)

She’s box office poison though, and thrives on rabid fan word-of-mouth and overendowed award pitches.

If she wasn’t being pitched awards for her no-money-making-but-critics-gave-it-good-words-knowing-most-people-wouldn’t-see-it-anyway cred would be out the window.

They’ve invested a lot in this Fetch and they’re going to make it work, dammit.

So if she’s not bringing in money, throw exclusive awards at her projects and hope that can stick until they figure out a way to market her messy image in a way that audiences will spend money on. It’s all for future industrial investment and her willingness to get naked and maybe/maybe not sleep with directors/producers will superficially ‘help’ her.

But again that’s a finite timeline and it’s basically all in the advertising. They’ve really been boosting her for too long to let it go now, and she’s really photogenic and great in fashion spreads. People go hard to ignore/minimise her indiscretions, so it’s too tempting not to try and see if she can replicate her Twi-phase moneyspinning potential.

I find it more interesting that people keep giving them jobs when their projects more often than not ostensibly flop.

They’re probably building to getting them in another film together. I’d lay odds. That would get people in – even just out of morbid curiosity.

      • D says:

        ‘kristen kristen kristen’

If you seriously think Kristen’s career will be affected by getting older then you haven’t been paying attention. She is building a career for longevity. Not for being a 20 year old hot thing.

The rest of your comment is not worth commenting on. Kristen’s career is great. Sorry!

      • G says:

I can’t reply to ‘D’, so I’m just going to reply to you because I essentially agree with you.

        To D: hahahahahahaha

      • Verona says:

To D: you keep coming to this board which has nothing to do with Kristen just to argue with people about her “talent”. Look at your choices, sis
And yes – Kristen is being hyped up by middle-aged critics who jump to overpraise hot young things like JLaw and Alicia Vikander. I was surprised they barely mentioned Eisenberg in that woody Allen movie and Nic Hoult in that other movie with KStew, so dudes don’t have perks of hot young actresses but if they have talent they have longer careers not based on their looks and fleeting “hotness”.

  2. Aiobhan says:

This is the first time I have actually found him attractive. Maybe he has just grown into his face or I just forgot what he looked like and am pleasantly surprised with his appearance.

Miuccia really needs to retire from Prada. She is ruining her legacy by letting crappy clothes like this out into the wild.

    • ell says:

‘Miuccia really needs to retire from Prada. She is ruining her legacy by letting crappy clothes like this out into the wild’

nooooo, she still has it. admittedly sienna’s outfit is nagl, but she still makes beautiful clothes.

    • YES! My first reaction was like, hmmm, better for sure. I’ve never found him attractive like that but now it’s like, okay.

  3. Ali says:

He looks hot! I think it suits him.

  4. Wren33 says:

I like it, but I also like that Prada outfit, so clearly I am not to be trusted.

  5. Esmom says:

I think he looks great, although I generally feel like goatees are kinda dated looking these days.

Sienna’s getup looks like something my preschoolers would put together with the random dress up bits in our classroom.

  6. Veronica says:

He looks good, actually. Better than he’s looked in a long time.

If he and Kirsten avoid each either, I imagine it’s because they aren’t up for encouraging any of the Twilight conspiracy dating theories anymore than necessary.

    • ell says:

i always got the feeling they didn’t part in the best of ways and anyway didn’t stay friends.

      • D says:

Well his best friend went to Kristen’s premiere and was seen hanging out with him so i don’t think there is the drama people want there to be. His other best friend was in an IG photo with Kristen’s friends over the summer too. Pretty sure they wouldn’t be hanging with her if Rob hates her and vice versa.

As for Kristen being in NYC for several weeks? Not true. She arrived last week and been back to LA and to Paris for a Chanel campaign in between her premieres.

      • Deidra says:

He never talks about Kristen in the interviews and whenever she mentions him it always sounds cold and formal… they’re totally not close anymore and don’t want to be linked in any way for whatever reason, but I don’t believe they go out of their ways to avoid each other, they’ve been at the same events a few times and there was absolutely no drama…

      • D says:

Because you know what will happen if they talk about each other…

    • Fallon says:

I fell down an internet rabbit hole last week on a site that swears that those two are married and have babies. It was terrifying.

  7. Lucy says:

He seems so happy and relaxed these days (and has for quite a while) that yeah, of course he looks great.

  8. ell says:

he looks like hugh grant, so not attractive. he’s a nice enough lad though.

    • Sasha says:

I find Hugh Grant to be very attractive and charming. He is a cad, though.
I like how Robert looks here as well.

  9. purple prankster says:

I don’t like the goatee. I think it would look good to me if it were darker.
facial hair looks good on most men, it adds gravitas and kind of contours the face .. but they have to pick the right style. in his case hair on the cheek area would probably look nice

  10. TotallyOld says:

Actually I was there Saturday night and Sienna’s outfit looked much better in person. It was different and had a very high-fashion vibe. I liked it very much and she looked great.
Rob is such a sweet and humble man and a totally gorgeous man. He always has some kind of facial hair and I suspect, as Kaiser said, to make him seem older and less “pretty”. His acting in the movie stood out as the best of all, he was singled out by many critics as the best part of the movie. The movie itself has received critical acclaim and is currently ranked 90% on RT as opposed to Billy Lynns Half Time Walk at 14%!
Kaiser I think it’s obvious which side you took in the divorce. 🙂

    • D says:

AHEM. Charlie Hunnam begs to differ!

And Kristen was praised for her acting in many reviews. The issue with Billy Lynn is the technical side. Nothing to do with her. And besides, she can afford a flunk, Certain Women just won Best Film at London Film Festival and she won a Best Actress award in a Mexican Film Festival. 😉

  11. Anname says:

He is growing out his hair, he keeps it short if he can. So I wonder what role he has up next.

    • Another Anne says:

There’s talk of that Assayas movie filming soon, the one that got cancelled at the last minute. Don’t know if he’s still attached.

      • Anname says:

I thought the same thing – that 70s hair may be coming back. And he has time to squeeze it in before High Life, so it looks like a real possibility.

    • TotallyOld says:

I agree Anname, I believe it’s for a movie role that he has the goatee. I’m not sure he would be able to squeeze in Idol’s Eye (Oliver Assayas movie) before the Claire Denis movie High Life. I am on board with him doing both but if he has to choose between Idol’s Eye and High Life, I hope he stays with High Life. I still don’t trust Idol’s Eye to come to fruition after that debacle 2 yrs ago.

  12. D says:

    Sienna looks ridiculous.

Hate the goatee but he looks better than he has in a while. He really did go through a phase of losing any attractiveness but it makes sense that he needed to look rough for a movie. It’s a relief because he does need his looks to have any hope in the business. Look at who his rivals are – Redmayne, Gosling, Garfield, Eisenberg, Hardy etc .

PS: Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Rob and Sienna hooked up, imagine the drama with his bff being her ex!

    • Sasha says:

Out of your list I think only Hardy has a universally attractive look, even though it is spoiled by his ” bad boy” vibes. I also find Garfiled attractive. The rest I find highly unattractive.
Luckily for men, the looks are not the decisive factor.

      • D says:

I talked about those guys in terms of talent. Rob is going to come last in that list, or near to last depending on a director. Lets be realistic here. He might bring some Twihards along with him if he keeps his looks. That’s my point.

    • Elba says:

Isn’t Sienna the mother of his bff’s child? I think he would never ever go for this…

      • Another Anne says:

Agreed, he would never go there. I think she’s seeing someone anyway, and he’s still with fka twigs.

  13. Insomniac says:

That’s as good as I’ve seen Rob look in a long time. Nice!

  14. mia girl says:

I think he looks great, even with the goatee. I like the length of his hair.

From a fashion standpoint, he always wears a suit really well and I kinda love that tie!

  15. Elba says:

I think he looks great – fresh and mature at the same time. Not a fan of his goatee, but I appreciate that he tries different looks… out of his buzz cut at Met Gala and Caesar haircut at the Dior show I still prefer this Edward Cullen look – his hair is full and shiny, I’m envious…

  16. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

    1) Yes, sure! Like a hammer on a nail.

    2) What in the marabou f&ck is that?

  17. Tig says:

He looks great. He always does in a suit, and I am OK with the “goat”.
I do want to see this movie- the book was great.
While he’s clearly working with the folks he wants to work with, I wish he wouldn’t avoid leading man roles like the plague. Or maybe a comedy, tho sure that’s getting more and more unlikely.

    • Anname says:

He filmed Damsel this summer, which is described as a western comedy, about a guy going west to meet his fiance. I agree, it will be nice to see him do a lighter role for a change.

  18. dana says:

He looks hot. I saw this Saturday and he’s much hotter in person. Whew the pretty is real. As for roles, a reporter there mentioned he was taking his time with well crafted roles and departing from tween actor. He was excellent in LcoZ. I’ve always thought Kristen and Rob were pretty good actors, just stuck in a shitty franchise. He’s got total range, and his reviews prove it.

    • Anname says:

Jealous you got to see the movie! Lucky you. Love your comment about his range, I agree completely.

    • sleepless says:

Rob looked great on the red carpet on Saturday. I also saw the movie and he was excellent in his role and if you read the reviews, most critics agree. One critic even called him a scene stealer who completely lost himself in his role. They will both have great careers and no one needs to pit them against each other.

  19. Carmen says:

I always liked him. He seems like a genuinely nice person.

I can’t stand KStew on any level.

    • TotallyOld says:

Rob is one of the good guys for sure. And as Dana said, he looks absolutely stunning in person. I saw him up close Saturday night and I was blown away by his looks. Has cheek boneslooks likes the gods of old. He does “bring the pretty”.

    • G says:

Yeah, I like him a lot. I haven’t watched many of his movies, but in interviews he’s always genuine and funny. Not into goatees, but his hair is great, so there’s that.

  20. FF says:

He looks better because – I’d say – he’s actually happier. The busker-chic look stopped when he started going out with Twigs. I remember back then being legit suprised that he could actually smile and look happy and relaxed like a normal person.

A similar thing happened to Ryan Gosling when he started seriously dating Eva Mendes.

Don’t love the goatee but he looks hella healthier.

  21. kennedy says:

Even though Charlie wasn’t physically there, this post should really just be pictures of the glorious Hunnam Hump which are FAR better to look at than Robby P.

From what I saw, many movie critics were pleasantly surprised by Hunnam’s performance and called him great, incredible, etc. Look – I’m not going to hide my Hunnam bias but I do recognize that he hasn’t been received as the greatest actor ever thus far (and in some cases, some critics have found him to be flat out bad in the past which… just breaks my little Hunnam heart). I found his work on Sons of Anarchy to be great and I loved him in Children of Men but the former was such a genre-ridden show that many film critics never tuned into and the latter was celebrated for Cuaron’s impeccable directing and the main actors (and rightfully so). So short story version: I am just really glad that so many folks are praising Hunnam’s performance and HOPEFULLY this is the start of him picking really solid films and working with great directors (so… no more King Arthur, Hunnam).

  22. Verona says:

Rpatz looks great here, I like that he keeps staying out of spotlight for the most part, but whenever he pops up he”s always an eye candy and his hair is gorgeous.
