Hailey Baldwin on the Instamodel crew: ‘We’re not saying we’re supermodels’

hailey1

Hailey Baldwin is a model. I’m saying that because I know there will be some WHO-ing in the comments. We’ve gossiped about Hailey before, actually. She was one of several girls/women in LA who dated Justin Bieber over the summer. Hailey is also trying to be part of the Kendall Jenner-Gigi Hadid nepotism-model crew, because Hailey is second-generation too (her father is Stephen Baldwin).

I personally don’t “know” Hailey as a model whatsoever – I’m sure she’s worked some runway shows or something, but it feels like she’s more of an Instamodel, famous for having followers rather than her superior modeling skillz. That being said, I don’t hate Hailey’s new Harper’s Bazaar Australia cover. She’s giving better “face” than Kendall Jenner, actually. Alhough… I pretty much couldn’t pick this girl out of a line-up, even with this Bazaar cover. Hailey is only 19 years old, so I guess… good for her for scoring a Bazaar cover, all things considered. In the interview, she tries to say that the original supermodels shouldn’t be scared of the Instamodels.

On the Instamodels being called “supermodels”: “The older supermodels sometimes don’t agree with the fact there is a new generation of models. We’re not saying we’re supermodels. I’d rather people look at us as businesspeople, and, yes, modeling is our business right now, but we’re not trying to take anybody’s spot and we’re not trying to discredit the past.”

She’ll never be a Moss: Baldwin also revealed that she’s always been told that she’ll never be as big as Kate Moss, but said she’s a “completely different individual” and wants to carve her own career in the industry.

Her BFFs: “If you start to BS these friends, they call you out. They’re ride-or-die for you, no matter what — they have your back.”

[From Yahoo]

Oh, honey. The OG Supermodels are not scared or worried or even concerned a little bit. And no, you’re never going to be a Moss. Kendall is never going to be Cindy. Bella is never going to be Linda. Gigi is never going to be Claudia. The OG Supermodels just want to remind everyone of those facts.

    She’s another one I don’t get…

  2. Bridget says:

We’re not calling you Supermodels either.

    • Dominique says:

HAHAH. I was typing that exact comment, then I saw yours 😛

    • Hudson Girl says:

I’m going to get attacked for defending her but, I actually have read a few references to the old supermodels whining in interviews about labeling them as supermodels vs models. The young crew isn’t doing it, it’s the designers and especially magazines desperate to manufacture some interest in their declining medium.

      • Bridget says:

“Supermodel” is a term that’s been bandied about to describe just about every model at some point for the last 20 years. And I don’t know that I’d say the “old” supermodels are whining so much as they’re asked a question and then answering honestly. Because they’re right, these young women aren’t. They’re Instagram models, their biggest assets aren’t strong portfolios but instead it’s how many social media followers they have, and the most successful ones are being tapped for fashion shoots. One of the things that I find most interesting that’s gone unsaid is that most of the Insta girls are nepotism hires who are serviceable models, and what separates them from the “real” Supermodels is that they really were unique, striking women who made it on the strength of their own portfolios and work.

Though I don’t think anyone is classifying Hailey Baldwin as a Supermodel either way.

  3. Green Is Good says:

That cover photo is awful. Not flattering in the slightest.

    • doofus says:

yeah, they whittled down her nose to the point that it looks like it could cut you.

the shot in the polka dots, her nose looks normal.

either way, she’s nothing special. not ugly, but not really “model” material in my opinion. pretty in a generic way.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. It gives her a horse face – way to long looking.

  4. gatinha524 says:

I actually quite like her as a model and find her look to be rather distinct. Her GUESS stuff is great, she is a good fit for the brand. She is gorgeous and, aside from some subtle lip fillers, she seems totally natural, unlike Bella, Kendall, etc. She looks the same to me from her before famous/after famous pictures.

    • Denise says:

She’s definitely got a Guess look. Since Claudia and Drew none of their campaigns have been memorable. The Guess girl is the pretty girl at the mall.

  5. Dominique says:

Her large jaw is bordering on Tori Spelling level….

  6. MissMerry says:

Isn’t the OG models saying over and over ‘well, they’re not us’ kind of make them look threatened?

Like, they’re so desperate for people not to forget about them just because there are other models that are popular now?

Has any of the newer, younger ones of Insta-fame ever said “we’re the ‘new’ claudia, or the ‘new’ somebody else’ or that they’re ‘better’ than the OG models?

or is it these new girls saying over and over ‘we’re not these OG models’ the reason the comparison started in the first place?

Im confused as to why it even matters…it’s a different era, different fashion, different faces…why do they need to even be compared at all?

  7. Astrid says:

So many of the younger “models” have dead eyes. I’m pretty sure I can sulk in front of a camera as well as them

    • Dippit says:

Yes, somehow they all lack character and certain visual distinction which comes with character. I look at this tier of Insta-models as each indistinguishable from the others in their blandness… and yes, especially around the eyes. They seem vacant and devoid of that qualifying ‘special something’, their special something seemingly just being a family surname.

    • Dominique says:

I’m going to say they are on a diet of xanax hence the dead eyes……that has been a rumor of Kim K for years.

      • squeezeo'lime says:

Xanax doesn’t make anyone dead eyed or zombified, please lets not perpetuate baseless rumours started by people who think they are being ‘real’ by ‘not choosing to avoid their feelings’.
(Completely agree that they are have horribly vacant stares except for probably Gigi)

    • blue banana says:

that’s because they didn’t learn to SMIZE from OG tyra banks

  8. Erinn says:

I don’t know. I think the OG super models ARE threatened in a way. If they weren’t we wouldn’t have had that article a while back where one of them was calling out the instagram models.

I’m not saying that they’re afraid of these girls’ talent – I don’t think that that’s what it is, and I don’t think most of these girls are anywhere near as talented.

But I bet you they’re afraid of aging, and afraid that the new generation of instamodels are being talked about more than they are now. They’re afraid of losing relevance – which, I think all celebrities are. And it obviously annoys some of them that modeling is so accessible now – these girls just take some photos, toss them up on social media – and they have a big following and an outlet to do it. They don’t NEED to try out for anything, they don’t NEED to book gigs – they just do their thing, hustle and people follow.

    • Alleycat says:

I agree with you somewhat, that some of the OG models are scared to age. I mean, that was their career, based on looks. But I don’t think they’re threatened by the nepotism models. I think they’re frustrated that these girls are getting the “supermodel” titles, without deserving it or working for it. And the magazines that are giving them this title, are doing it because they were paid to. I would be annoyed if someone took my job once I retired and received the same praise when they did nothing to deserve. They don’t hustle, they don’t know the meaning of hard work. So it’s mostly frustration, rather than being threatened.

      • Kitten says:

I don’t think Erinn was saying that it’s a conscious thing, though.

I don’t think any of the supermodels consciously look at the IG models and seethe with jealousy. I think it’s probably more of a subconscious “sting” to see younger models in the prime of their career, getting massive amounts of attention for their appearance, being the envy of many young women and the fantasy of many young men.
I think it’s perfectly normal to see that and feel a bit..wistful and slightly threatened.

And I also agree that it probably drives them crazy to see how easy it is to gain a modeling career with the right last name and enough social media followers.

FWIW, I’d take Moss and Crawford, Evangelista, Christensen and basically the entire group from George Michael’s “Freedom” over any of these women. But I’m 37 and very clearly biased 😉

    • teacakes says:

but the OG supermodels are now in their 40s….. in modelling terms they’ve “aged” at least two decades ago, and in real-life terms it’s a decade. They’re industry professionals commenting on a trend in said industry – why does it have to be that they can only be speaking up because they’re threatened or jealous?

    • milla says:

i think the original supers are actually pi**ed.

they did have to work on themselves to get those titles. pretty much all of them had some issues due to what they went through, so that 20 yrs later daddys little girls would be called supermodels. the press calls IG models the supermodels, even though that term is dead. it is about an era, from 1990 to 1997 to be exact.

as for aging, helena and christy does not seem to care. naomi does not age and kate moss never cared. not sure about cindy or claudia. linda has been out of the spotlight for ages. iman and paulina, they look amazing, even though they are a bit older than the supermodels.

  9. NeoCleo says:

Neither photo does anything for me. She’s pretty but bland.

  10. Squiggisbig says:

So…is it a requirement now that to be a model you have to have rich and somewhat famous parents?

  11. Penelope says:

The cover is horribly unflattering imo and she looks like she’s had bad plastic surgery. Honestly, I see 20 prettier girls every day where I work.

  12. Camille says:

I think it’s hilarious there is beef between current models and those that came before them. And everyone has totally joined the beef like it’s a real issue. The older generations are all pissy because the newbies got discovered on Instagram or some other social media platform, or they’re related to someone in the business. WTF! They got discovered in shopping malls or because their mums knew someone in the business. It’s the same righteous path to vapid shallow over-paid nothingness. No person with an ounce of humanity and humility would express or compare their struggles to be a model!

  13. Josefina says:

Nepotism has always been a thing in modeling. It just happens now that the nepotism models are the most succesful.

I don’t mind the fact they made a career out of Instagram. It’s just that they are soooo plain and boring looking. I miss when models had unique, striking faces.

    • teacakes says:

The only one of the instamodels who has a memorable face, is Gigi Hadid. The others look like a dime a dozen.

  14. deevia says:

She’s at Paris Hilton-level kind of modeling.

  15. elle says:

At least she doesn’t have her father’s perma-dumb expression on her face.

  16. MellyMel says:

I just think it’s funny that she includes herself in the same group as Gigi, Kendall, Bella & Cara. Say what you want about them but they are working. They’re booking jobs, getting covers & have huge followings. She’s not there yet as least in terms of her job.

    • Sarah says:

That is exactly what I thought. She may hang out with those girls but she is not “one of them”. They have walked in high fashion runway shows and had Vogue covers. The closest Hailey has got to a high fashion runway is as a guest of Kendall or Gigi at the after party.

  17. Anilehcim says:

LMAO, I’m glad her self esteem is OK, but she is delusional. No one is calling her a supermodel. No one puts her in the same category as Kendall or Gigi, and that isn’t saying much. She is famous for being a hanger-on to the Jenner girls and their friends, and she is the daughter of a Z-list Baldwin.

Can we even call her fame the product of nepotism? I mean, her dad is Budget Baldwin.

In regard to comparisons between these new girls and the OGs… Bella Hadid looks EXACTLY like Carla Bruni… I mean, they could be twins. That’s besides the point, but I’m just saying. IDK if Carla was ever a big time model, but they are nearly identical. Example:
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ci-uAHhXEAE0_LS.jpg
This is a picture of Carla, but I think it looks exactly like Bella.
