Kendall Jenner’s homemade skincare involves lemon juice & egg whites

wenn29482201

I’ve never been a believer in “home remedies” for skincare. Some women swear by their homemade skincare stuff – like the new thing of “just slather yourself in coconut oil!” – but I’ve never gotten into it personally. I tend to think that if your skin looks amazing after a homemade facial, then you’ve probably got great skin to begin with. Well, someone with youthful, healthy skin is trying to give us some recommendations for homemade facials. That someone is Kendall Jenner. I think I remember hearing about this homemade facial many years ago, from… like, Jane Magazine? Sassy? It was the ‘90s and retro-hippie stuff was all the rage.

As one of the today’s most sought-after models and the face of Estée Lauder, it’s safe to say that Kendall Jenner has unlimited access to virtually every beauty product on the market. And as someone who has suffered from acne, she’s figured out what works to prevent breakouts (an “incredible dermatologist” and laser treatments aside). As far as Kendall’s concerned, acne can be resolved with just a few ingredients in your kitchen — and she’s breaking down her recipes on her website.

Jenner shared her at-home skin-clearing secret — a DIY acne-face mask that she says will shrink pores and balance your PH levels — and it only requires two ingredients, both of which are most likely already in your cabinet. The 20-year-old star mixes one well-beaten egg white and the juice from half of a lemon, and advises leaving an even layer on the face for 30 minutes.

But if a full mask isn’t what you’re after, Jenner also recommends a DIY spot treatment, made of 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1 TSP honey. The baking soda and lemon will work to dry out blemishes, while the honey will soothe the area.

[From People]

If I put honey on my face, I would break out. I suspect I would break out if I put egg whites on my face too, although I’m not going to experiment with that. Of course, I’m a 30-something woman and I’m still getting breakouts ahead of my period and it still SUCKS. So maybe I should try Kendall’s home remedies? Eh. I don’t want to smell like lemons, baking soda and egg whites all day.

This is so bad for your skin long-term. Lemon juice can definitely dry up zits, but it’s so acidic it can damage your skin. The same goes for toothpaste and baking soda. Stick to products that are specifically formulated for delicate facial skin!!!

    • Jennah says:

Yes, toothpaste and lemon juice were the worst things I ever put on my face. I absolutely experienced rashes from both.

  2. Fran says:

Bullshit. She’s using the best dermatologist and face creams out there. This is to try to convince 15 year olds to buy her app so they can “be just like her” but will be disappointed for the next 15 years when these home remedies don’t work. Retin A and sunscreen ladies. I just solved most of your skin concerns. An omelette on your face will fix nothing.

“And as someone who has suffered from acne, she’s figured out what works to prevent breakouts (an “incredible dermatologist” and laser treatments aside)”

Sorry incredible dermatologist and laser treatments aside? THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT FIXED HER SKIN.

As someone who has to save up for laser therapy, and now layers probably 12 scientifically proven things on my face daily to avoid breakouts (also as a 30 something woman) I am annoyed at this journalist and Kendall.

The egg whites, honey and baking soda are not the cure. The derm and the laser therapy are.

ps. saving for BBL like there is no tomorrow.
pps. I cannot rep beautypedia enough for helping me find stuff that doesn’t irritate the crap out of my sensitive skin.

      • meandi says:

YES! I love Paula’s Choice products and I can vouch for Beautypedia being a godsend. I read their articles a lot on the PC site too and this is crap. To anyone reading, DO NOT EVER PUT LEMON JUICE ON YOUR FACE. It ruins the Ph balance of skin, increases photosensitivity and can lead to permanent damage. Same goes for baking soda. Eggs and honey can actually be ok but well-formulated products with no fragrance or dyes are best. She is so irresponsible for saying this, but like all of the K Klan, she just spouts mindless crap with ulterior motives to shill sh!t.

    • Madailein says:

Kendall is such a transparent liar–no surprise, since she’s Kim’s half sister, but WOW. I would be willing to bet that *she* sees a dermatologist weekly, when her acne flares up, and uses only her Dr. prescription drugs on her skin, and/or VERY high priced lotions and creams. Probably has regular laser treatments and peels, as well–things that most of her followers simply can’t afford (nor do the majority of them need to.) I’m far less interested in her “home remedies” than in how her lips, like Kylie’s, have swelled up overnight…Apparently, it *is* a highly genetic condition, as it has happened to all the sisters’ lips now, and to their mother’s: a kind of a congenital bloating of the mouth. (If only this rare medical condition could stop them from speaking!)

  3. swak says:

Receipts that she actually uses these home remedies – please.

  4. QQ says:

Nope nope nope nope .. i haven’t looked back since trying Deciem’s The Ordinary.. i’m shocked but telling every girl with troubled skin in their 30’s (like meee)

    https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/52747f/reviewish_first_impressions_of_deciem_the/

I ordered more already even as im not done with what I have yet (Plus the company seems to have pretty cool chemically structured products). I’m truly a convert https://www.instagram.com/p/BLlnVn-AZOv/?taken-by=qqbeans&hl=en

    • Nicole says:

      I love Deciem’s Vitamin C!

      • QQ says:

OMG I’m IN LOVE with their stuff already! I keep making the gf that started me on send me Progress pics of her skin!, you can feel that Retinol stuff overnight pretty much

      • Nicole says:

Have you tried that retinoic oil for the body? I use on my hands, neck, chest, stretch marks. LOVE!! And they constantly have great sales.

    • INeedANap says:

Would it work for someone with rosacea/large pores/oily skin/a disgustingly gross, hideous, dull and discolored face that always looks sickly and run down? I am desperate for anything that would work.

      • Decapoda says:

@INeedANap These Deciem products have ingredients that would irritate rosacea. I would be careful with them. If you are suffering from bad rosacea, talk to a dermatologist and get a prescription for Soolantra cream (ivermectin), especially if you have the papulopustular type of rosacea. It is the only thing that has cleared up my skin, and I have tried everything over the years.

      • Nicole says:

I second the dermatologist for rosacea, etc. Also, be an ingredient hound. It takes time, but you can figure out the ingredients that cause flares, etc. I know people that have used metrogel and finacea for their’s. Both RX, but there are other things that can help. I would try to find a good doc that is generous with samples until you find a great fit.

      • detritus says:

try Paula’s Choice, they have a line specific for rosacea and eczema. Also it’s all anti-irritant, fragrance free etc etc.

      • Nicole says:

Paula’s Choice is actually really expensive and laden with irritants. I’d do the derm first before wasting money.

      • detritus says:

Interesting about the irritants. I don’t use anything with certain ingredients because I have prescription strength stuff, but its one of the few brands I’ve found that hasn’t irritated my skin and has scientific backing on their formulations. Which products are you talking about? Or just in general?

I firmly second getting to a dermatologist and ingredient checking everything. Alcohol and fragrance murder my skin, so just cutting those out has really helped, but its hard to find products.

      • Nicole says:

Honestly it depends which particular line is used from her. I don’t like how in the last few years, every single thing in her line has gotten smaller and the price has skyrocketed. She has shady business practices, but if it works for you, awesome. Her ‘natural’ line is filled with too much stuff. All of her products have too many ingredients for my skin to handle. I used to be in love with the CLEAR regular strength 2% SA toner, but it got so small and pricey and anything with over 10 ingredients is bad news for my literal dang baby skin. YMMV! Your mileage may vary!

      • detritus says:

So far I haven’t branched out much, because of the price and shipping to Canada is expensive, and because my skin is rarely happy and needs babying. I only use the calm line plus the vitamin C booster.

Compared to the products my derm is trying to sell me, its about half the cost, but I’m open to other recs. I’m going to check out decieme and see what their ingredients are. I’m dying to find a cheap pure oil line, one for quality argan and almond oil.

Drunk Elephant is a line I have my eye on, but they only sell it in certain boutique locations here.

      • Wren33 says:

This is late, but the only thing that helped my skin was IPL laser treatment. Prescription creams from the dermatologist only irritated me more. I now wash with Cera Ve hydrating cleanser and moisturize with Welada almond face lotion. During the day I wear mineral powder.

    • akilah says:

I’ve tried these and they’re amazing. The retinoid, hyaluronic acid and vitamin c are great.

General note: if niacinamide, listed as being good for breakouts, is making you breakout more: quit it. Some people are not receptive to this ingredient for some reason and it can actually make you breakout even more or raise dormant acne. Instead try the arbutin serum or the lactic acid serum.

When you know what works for you, and you find the right ingredients, you do become weirdly evangelical!

      • Nicole says:

Dormant acne= purging. Nothing causes purging except Retin-A and other hardcore ingredients. If niacinamide or any other ingredient is breaking you out, it is irritating your skin and not helping.
I do love niacinamide for repairing skin barrier though.

      • detritus says:

        Haha, yes you do.
It’s like finding a miracle, you just want to share with everyone.

I think its because anyone with previously bad skin knows how destroying it can be.

      • meandi says:

@nicole, actually BHA (salicylic acid), when used as an exfoliant as it should be, can cause a “purge” of sorts too, however it is honestly only pore congestion under the surface that would have become acne being catalyzed to its fruition by the ingredient. Otherwise, you are correct that retinol and retinoids can also bring acne to the surface or cause some breakouts due to the increased rate of cellular turnover 😉

    • detritus says:

So I finally had time and went through Deciems site, holy shit. I want all the things.
The Originals line is insane. I am going to buy every damn thing and it will still cost less than two things from Sephora or PC.

      • Nicole says:

Yes, go for it! I do believe Drunk Elephant is insanely priced for the ingredients offered and also the one thing I will pay the dang high price for is Replenix CF Green Tea serum, but I am under the sun all the time in Georgia. Oh, and compare Replenix with Drunk Elephant. Same ingredients! On a good bit of them. you are awesome. Skin sisters!!!!

    • meandi says:

They have some of the best, cheapest raw ingredient-centric formulations. I have been dying to try their stuff. Glad to here that you are loving it Q. I am now going to commit some coins from the next pay check *squeals excitedly*

  5. Clare says:

My homemade face mask of ground aspirin (or aspirin powder) and honey is my fave. I know someone will tell me I am destroying my face in the long term (seriously, tell me if I am?), but I learned it from my mama whose been doing it since, like, the 60’s, and its a fantastic exfoliater and costs next to nothing.

Also, coconut oil and egg whites (not together) in my hair. Just don’t wash with hot water, because no one wants scrambled eggs in their hair!!!

  6. Size Does Matter says:

Honest question – how can people stand having hair in their eyes like that?

    • swak says:

I can’t and I’ve warned my hairdresser that if my bangs get too long that he is going to have a mess to clean up at the next appointment. The reason I go every six weeks – more than that and I’m ready to take a scissors to them.

    • pinetree13 says:

I’ve always wondered that as well. Though my kids never seemed bothered even though I force them to cut it at that length.

Also the day I take skin care advice from someone THAT young!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!! No honey. Show me someone in their 40’s that looks amazing and then maybe I’ll buy what their selling (but that’s still a big maybe).

Also, I can just imagine the giant mess of stickness using honey on my face would cause. UGH! Bathroom counters just….too much mess.

    • atorntogal says:

I still want to know how she is a model? Seriously?

  7. Alleycat says:

It’s called being rich and young. Why does Kendall even have a blog?

  8. Sarah says:

You ladies are brainwashed by the beauty industry. Honey is gentle and moisturizing, lemon juice is a super gentle cleansing acidic “peel”, apple cider vinegar is the best toner ever, egg whites are full of nutrients for the skin. Lastly, raw milk is a wonderful moisturizer for the skin and whey is the only face wash I use. It’s strange that you would be dissing using these types of products if you have never tried it. Besides, all this stuff is in your store bought beauty products anyway.

    • INeedANap says:

I tried a honey mask on my face and had to go to an urgent care facility to be treated for burns and bleeding. Lemon made it peel off in sheets. Coconut oil gave me full blown all-over acne.

Not all of us have pretty skin that responds well to fairy princess nonsense.

      • Nicole says:

Any coconut derivative is a nightmare for me as well. Lemon juice and ACV are torture to your skin’s PH levels. No beauty industry taught me that. Chemistry did. Honey is a great ingredient, but bees are dying. And raw milk is filled with lactic acid. So. the beauty industry came in there somewhere. Agreed, I don’t have fairy princess skin either!

      • detritus says:

Yes. Much agree here. If you have fairy princess skin you can put whatever the snake oil strikes your fancy and it will be fine.

It’s those of us with shitty skin that need to be careful of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and the likes. Honey and avocado and egg whites and milk are OK though.
Science has taken a look at all those ingredients to determine what part of them works and then to distil that part. Capitalism then takes the science and bastardizes the everlasting shit out of it, adds a nice box and fragrance and then we are back to square one with an irritating product that barely works.

      • Nicole says:

I REFUSE all fragranced products. I am an ingredient psycho, but my skin is fine after years of practice.

  9. Radley says:

Sounds like PMK is fishing for a skincare line for Kendall. Therefore they’ll put stories out there that she experimented at home and came up with the perfect product and now she wants to share it with you. Because she’s a giver, of course. Meanwhile a squad of high priced skin experts are the ones who really keep her looking like that.

The Kardashian/Jenners are always chasing a buck, so I tend to side-eye.

  10. ashley says:

honey is actually super anti bacterial and doesn’t clog pores at all – it’s great for your skin. Lemon, when I was using just a half lemon and rubbing it on my face every morning, then splashing it off, lightened my acne scars. It was insane! And egg whites really do shrink your pores. I prefer buying products that are already made but a lot have these ingredients in them and are seriously the best ever.

But then, I also love retinol and glycolic – I could never go all holistic

    • Lena says:

Lemon is brightening but using it pure like that can damage your skin. It’s great if it worked for you but for many others it can be too much. In General if you want to make homemade skin care products it’s better if you read up on the science, purchase ph strips to make sure your products are in a good range and sterilize your things with 70-90% alcohol.

  11. Nicole says:

First, lemon juice wrecks your PH as well as baking soda. Honey is an anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and humectant. It is best used when doing a mask with uncoated rushed aspirin since aspirin breaks down into salicylic acid. I no longer use honey because I want to save the bees. Kendall I guarantee gets all the helps she need from Retin-a!

  12. Mainie says:

    True @Sarah,

The only thing I don’t like is having to mix things like honey, because it’s messy and then I hate finding containers that are kitchen and bathroom friendly.

Coconut oil ruined my skin. I didn’t know that we have a yeast on our body that eats oils and if the yeast gets out of hand it looks like red, white or dark patches of skin.

I’m finally getting my skin back by embracing antifungals for athletes foot, and antifungal shampoos, and Vaseline and Cerave.

I absolutely love using my salicylic acid shampoo as a face wash too! It’s the same stuff as aspirin, but easier than crushing tablets.

  13. jerkface says:

She also used a butter knife and her reflection on the side of her toaster to cut those bangs.
Get your arts and crafts on kid thats alright.

  14. Nikita says:

Lemon juice, and on the opposite end, baking soda, are terrible for your skin. You never want to put anything that acidic or basic on your face, ever. Lemon juice will burn your skin and cause damage, even if you don’t see it. It doesn’t bother Kendall right now because she is young and her skin is still youthful and resilient, but trust me, pure fruit acid is death for your skin like that, unless you’re using an alpha hydroxy treatment, or getting a peel from a professional.

  15. AnnaKist says:

Mmmm. I’m not buying all this home-made skincare advice from her. I think she’s trying to sound down-to-earth and relatable, so her young fans think she’s “just one of them”. It’s all part of the KJ machine.

I can’t stop looking at her new pillow lips, and wondering why her entire face looks bloated.

  16. Bronson says:

I make all of my own personal care products, except for my makeup. This way I can customize them for exactly what I want them to do for me. No damaging acidic lemon juice or baking soda, just lost of high quality organic nutrient and vitamin-rich oils + essential oils. My skin looks better now than it did when I was 20 (I’m 33) and I not only spend a fraction of what I used to on products loaded with chemicals, I know exactly what goes in to these because I source the ingredients myself.

  17. Molly Fulton says:

I’ve tried plenty of lotions and potions, but I have started slathering myself with coconut oil after I shower, and my 52 year old skin has never felt better.

  18. LA says:

I started using coconut oil about a month ago on my face and it has worked wonders. My oily/ dry skin is hydrated and has a much more even completion now. Coconut oil also removes dirt better than any cleanser I’ve ever used. I was very skeptical about using oil on my oily face but wow.. I love it and get compliments all the time on how young I look, which has never happened before. I’m done with expensive, over priced beauty products.

  19. Take another look at those pictures–Kendull’s face and neck are one color, and her chest is another color.

  20. Can’t tell if my comment is here or in outer space–just wonder why Kendulls face and neck are a different color than her chest?

  21. Jade says:

Try going off the pill, Kendall. The natural remedies may still not work after that. I suspect her career will suffer if she goes off the pill.

But, if she stopped taking the pill and her acne is under control, I’m very happy for her. I really wish nobody had acne.
