Jon Bon Jovi on his daughter’s overdose: ‘A terrible speed bump’

Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation's 10 year anniversary

I feel an urgent need to get out the Aqua Net and leopard print spandex. Bon Jovi is back and I feel like a teenager cranking “Livin’ On A Prayer” out of the window of my beloved 1985 Firebird. The band, sans guitar player Richie Sambora, is back with their 14th album, This House Is Not for Sale, which hits shelves tomorrow. The title track was released as the album’s first single back in August. Along with the new album comes a 20-city US tour, which kicks off in February in Greenville, South Carolina.

To help promote the release, Jon and wife Dorothea sat down with People Magazine to talk about their family life and Jon’s career. The couple, who were high school sweethearts growing up in New Jersey (of course), have been together for an astonishing 27 years and have four children together: Stephanie, 23, Jesse, 21, Jacob, 14 and Romeo, 12. In the interview, Jon and Dorthea said that they do their best to keep their kids out of the spotlight. Dorothea said, “We never really drag the kids to things. I never pointed at the TV and said, ‘There’s Daddy!’ We try hard just to give our kids a normal life.”

Well, if they wanted to live like a normal family, they’ve succeeded – with the ups and downs every family has. Jesse is currently playing football for Notre Dame and daughter Stephanie is currently a senior in college. The family had a close call with Stephanie, who, back in 2013, was admitted to the hospital after a run-in with opioids while away at school. That’s pretty normal, if you ask me. Dorothea agreed, stating, “It happens to a lot of families that you would never know. We dealt with it as a family.” Jon said of the incident, “We couldn’t get any closer” and called it “a terrible speed bump we got over.”

Jon, who I still can’t believe is 54, possesses a great deal of humility, especially when it comes to his kids. Let’s just say his younger sons may not be into Dad’s music so much. Jon told People, “I asked if they wanted to go to the show and they said, ‘Um, no. No thanks.’ So that’ll keep you humble.”

That’s funny. I asked my friends if they wanted to go see the band when they hit Atlanta in February and, when they discovered that Richie Sambora was not returning, gave me pretty much the same answer. Unlike lots of inner-band squabbles, Richie just up and left the group in the midst of their 2013 “Because We Can” tour. According to Jon, “There was no fight or money issues, like the reports say. Nobody expected Richie to quit in the middle of the night for no reason. He wasn’t fired; he just didn’t come to work.”

Well, Richie or no Richie, Jon still enjoys seeing a million faces and rocking them all, but getting that initial kick start to get out on the road is still a little difficult for him. When it comes to leaving his family for life on the road, Jon confessed, “I go kicking and screaming. You see my fingernails in the driveway.” But the singer, who claims he’s no “applause junkie” says once he’s on the road, he can get to the rocking, stating, “Once I get to the first hotel I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m here.’”

The interview brings out the human side of a man many perceive as a larger than life rock star. I have always liked Jon and from all accounts, he’s a great guy. His Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has done a lot to help the homeless, by providing affordable housing and shelter for thousands of people in low-income areas across the country. That being said, Jon still has those rock star pipes and devilishly good looks. All I’m saying is could still lay his hands on me. Meeeow!

I loooooved Bon Jovi as a teenager. But in my 20s I lost interest, because I couldn’t get into their new music anymore. I still enjoy their music until Keep the faith, everything after that not so much. I saw an interview with Jon, Tico and David the other day and enjoyed the chemistry they still seem to have with each other.

I’m right there with you. My cassette tape of Slippery When Wet was permanently in my boom box for months and months! The backside of my clipboard for school was covered in photos of them that were clipped out of Teen Beat Magazine. Posters adorned my bedroom wall. Jon was my dream husband. When the video release for Dead or Alive had an every hour for 24 hours debut on MTV I was up in the middle of the night to watch it *again.* Yeah….they were it for me when I was in middle school (and partly into high school). 😍

And, of course, I’m glad everything turned out okay for their daughter! We’ve all hit stumbling blocks on our way to adulthood.

      • greenmonster says:

oh the days when MTV was having band related weekends… I was glued to the TV and recorded every little bit. My heart was set on Richie – now I wonder where my mind was 🙂

And yes to a bedroom wall full of posters. Sometimes I wish I could still be this excited about music as I was in my teens.

OMG, one of my BEST friends gave me “Slippery When Wet” cassette for Christmas that year! I played it til it snapped!

Oh my word I do hope he’s as good as he seems 💗 I loved Bon Jovi when I was a teen but lost interest afterwards. But still love him. We have to travel for work a lot and his description of leaving the house then hitting work and embracing it fits like a glove. Also really understood what he said about his daughter, tough stuff makes us closer provided we can overcome it as a family.

  5. Slowsnow says:

Aaaaaaaand he’s still lovely to look at.

  6. Esmom says:

They sound like they handled their daughter’s drug issue as well as any family could. I’m glad she’s ok. I agree that most families of college age kids are just a step away from confronting something like that.

Their music was never my taste as a college student in the 80s — although when I hear Livin’ on a Prayer now I do get nostalgic — but I have to say I really warmed to him when he joined the cast of Ally McBeal. He was so great!

And that’s hilarious that his kids declined to come to his show. Ouch.

    • MC2 says:

I agree. I think I missed Bon Jovie by age or genre or a mix of both. Never liked his music or shtick but totally grown to love him. What a wonderful man. Not my type to do the dirty deeds with but I’d love to sit by a fire & chat with him all night.

I’m 49 and still have love dreams with him !

  8. Konspiracytheory says:

I was never really a fan of their music, but they completely won me over with their reaction to Triump the Insult Comic Dog. This was almost 10 years ago, before Triumph hit it ‘big’ – I don’t think they had any idea what was going on, but they were great sports and seemed likely a genuinely fun group of guys:

That video was awesome. They all look good

    He still looks amazing!

  11. LizLemonGotMarried says:

Can we talk about his restaurant? If you’re broke, you can go there and get a meal and just work to pay for it. It’s also pay what you can…❤️❤️❤️❤️ Jon Bon Jovi!!!

    • MC2 says:

That deserves a lot of shot outs. That is amazing.

    • Marlena says:

      Amazing!

    • lucy2 says:

He has 2 of them now I think, both are kind of close to where I live so I see news about them occasionally. I think it’s great. He and his wife seem to be caring people.
I’m glad their daughter is doing ok, that had to be really scary for them all, and sadly it’s far too common.

  12. TT says:

I have loved JBJ since I was 12 years old. He just keep getting better.

  13. Rhiley says:

I have never liked their music, but I have always liked Jon, well, at least since he cut his hair. He really does seem to be a good person. I had no idea Richie Sambora left the group. That is kind of a big deal, no? Isn’t it kind of like Keith Richards walking out on the Stones?

    • Marlena says:

Me too, I had no idea! However, I cannot guess from what Jon says why he left. Maybe fatigue? Or maybe he is over the whole Rock Star thing? Does he do any solo work or has he quit for good?

    • JR says:

      @Rhiley & Marlena
Richie didn’t show up to a scheduled gig due to alcohol problems, according to Jon. And just never rejoined the tour. Apparently they had employed a band therapist off and on for many years to try and work things out but obviously that failed. It’s a shame though. I always thought Richie was the more talented one. Great guitar player obviously, but also a really good voice.
I respect Jon for carrying on with the band. It’s a big machine with a lot of moving parts and many people would no longer be employed if Bon Jovi had dissolved.
There was a really candid (for Jon) interview in the New Statesman where he discussed it.

  14. Jayna says:

It was a heroin overdose. So it must have been beyond frightening as a parent.

  15. PunkyMomma says:

He’s still gorgeous, made more so for me because he’s a family man.

  16. Olenna says:

Ageing like a fine wine. He can paint my house anytime.

  17. chaine says:

Eh. He does seem like a genuinely nice guy, but based on all the stories from the 80’s, his wife is long-suffering. His fling with Lita Ford comes to mind.

    • KiddVicious says:

Lita Ford was before they were married, so was Diane Lane. He and Dorthea may have been high school sweethearts but there were quite a few years in there where there weren’t dating.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

He admitted that he wasn’t loyal on the road. Not that I am defending Jon, or any musician, but let’s face it, when you marry a rock star, this is par for the course. Unless you go on tour with them, groupies are ruthless. So, when the cats away, the mice will play.

Also, nobody chained Dorothea to him. If she was miserable, she was free to walk at any time.

Finally, despite his rumored affair with Skeez Ann (which makes me violently ILL to even contemplate), I will always love Jon. Plus,, he does a lot of charitable things for his home state of, New Jersey.

      • DIRTNAP says:

@LEANN STINKS, thank you for bringing up what I have been wondering about. I had heard about Jon’s rumored affair with LeAnn, that she took their breakup hard and called his wife in retaliation. So with Jon’s People cover AND her exclusion from the CMAs (on it’s anniversary, too), yesterday may have been pretty rough for her. She did post on her Twitter something about #CurrentMood and surrendering. I’d be pretty bummed too if Sharon Stone was there and not me (a country singer!) and if a former flame and his wife were in the news.

    • Aren says:

I agree. There are pics of him naked in hotel beds with groupies, that’s far from what I would call a marriage of love and respect.

  18. Jen says:

Oh my gosh. Look at him. Always loved Jon Bon Jovi.

  19. Cupcake says:

Is it generally believed that he stayed faithful for all 27 years?

    • hil says:

      Hahaha

    • Johanna says:

In interviews he often refers to temptations and that he has been no saint. I think he even has admitted it that he is been unfaithful, but that they worked it out.

    • Granger says:

And who knows if she stayed faithful? He was on the road for weeks at a time. If she knew he was occasionally getting a little something on the side, she might have decided to do the same.

Having said that, it still makes me mad to think that a guy like that would cheat on a wife who is at home with their children, helping with homework, getting them out the door for school, making sure they’re eating well, bathing them, reading to them at bedtime. Dorothea obviously would have had a lot of help, but she was still the primary caregiver a lot of the time, and him getting his rocks off while she did all of that work is just… ugh.

  20. Cerys says:

I just love JBJ and have done since the band became first became famous. Like a fine wine, he gets better with age.
He and Dorothea seem like a lovely couple and I’m glad (but jealous) that they are still together. It’s also nice to see a celebrity keeping his kids out of the public eye and not parading them like fashion accessories.
I hope he can patch things up with Richie. He was a big part of Bon Jovi and still missed by many fans.

  21. Lucy says:

I love that he’s gone gray. He looks fantastic, always has.

  22. jinglebellsmell says:

I was born and raised in New Jersey, about ten minutes from his hometown. And of course my family and I still live here. Bon Jovi has continued to pour his resources into local communities and always, always, always helps the needful in some way, shape, or form. Whether his career was “hot” or “cold” didn’t matter…he is perpetually generous. A great guy, and a credit to our state.

  23. As a parent grandparent great grandparent we try and instill the right things to do in life. Most of the time it works. As you said times we hit a bump in the road and we learn Hopefully. I grew up watching and listening to the music of my 6 children. All differed. In time I got to listen just not to the music but the words and to the person or group singing. My daughter would swoon that was the word in my day over Jon bon jovi. I learned how caring a parent you and your wife are. For the kids and especially for the poor. One of my favorites is Hallaleugh. Exceptional. Wishing you and your band and a special shout out for your lovely family.

  24. Talita says:

My sweet Jon! I’ll love him forever ❤

  25. Kori says:

My grandmother was friends with his grandmother way back when. She would always say ‘He was the nicest boy’ very respectful with good manners. 🙂

  26. hayley says:

Dorothea looks the same as she did 20 years ago! What’s her secret, I wonder?
