Donald Trump’s last act: claiming Tom Brady & Bill Belichick endorsed him

It seems completely reasonable that on Election Day, hopefully the final 24 hours of Donald Trump’s candidacy, we’re wasting our time dissecting some bulls—t that Trump said at one of his final rallies. Trump spent the last 24 hours barnstorming (if you want to call it that) the swing states and making wild, outlandish claims. He whined about rigged systems, he threatened to throw all of his real or perceived enemies in jail, he spewed some racism, and of course, he talked about how great he is (and how America is a hellhole). It seems like Trump was still pretty mad that Hillary Clinton got endorsements from cool people like Beyonce, Jay-Z, LeBron James and Bruce Springsteen. So Trump decided to make one of his final campaign speeches about how Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have secretly endorsed him. Because why not? Sure.

Donald Trump spent the weekend grumbling about superstars like Jay Z and Beyonce endorsing Hillary Clinton, but now it’s her turn to jealously ramble about her opponent’s celebrity supporters at every campaign stop. On the eve of the election, Trump announced that he’s received glowing, last-minute endorsements from the greatest sports figures on the planet (to New England voters, at least).

“Tom Brady, great guy, great guy. Great guy, great friend of mine — great, great champion. Unbelievable winner,” Trump told the crowd at a Monday night rally in Manchester, New Hampshire. “He called today and he said, ‘Donald, I support you, you’re my friend, and I voted for you.’ And I said, ‘So Tom. You voted for me, you support me, am I allowed to say it tonight at this massive crowd in New Hampshire?’ He said, ‘If you want to say it, you can say it.’ Okay? Tom, that’s what a champ is all about.”

The crowd roared at the mention of the New England Patriots quarterback – but there’s more! Trump revealed that while sitting on his plane today, his aides handed him a letter from the team’s coach, Bill Belichick. Trump said he asked if he could read the letter at his rally, and Belichick asked to reword it. Trump expected the coach to tone down his praise, but instead, “it was much better, it was stronger.” He read the revised letter in its entirety:

“Congratulations on a tremendous campaign. You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media, and have come out beautifully – beautifully. You’ve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Your leadership is amazing. I have always had tremendous respect for you, but the toughness and perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable. Hopefully tomorrow’s election results will give the opportunity to make America great again. Best wishes for great results tomorrow. Bill Belichick”

[From NY Magazine]

It would not surprise me in the least if Tom Brady is supporting Trump and voting for him, although there’s some evidence to suggest that Brady doesn’t understand the concept of going to the polls and actually casting a ballot – he was asked yesterday if he voted early and he said no, but he was also unclear about when he should vote (hint: today). As for Bill Belichick, the Patriots’ coach… sports writers were saying on Twitter that the “letter” Trump read sounds nothing like Belichick, and that Belichick has actually quietly supported (BIGLY) progressive/liberal candidates and causes for years. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Incidentally, we are going to do an Open Post later this evening for Election Night! We’ll have updates as information comes in, and I think everyone hopes that this sh-t gets wrapped up quickly. We’ll also have full coverage tomorrow!

In MA, Brady could have filed an absentee ballot yesterday but he hadn’t at the time he was interviewed so that means today. Early voting closed here last week. So, no, at the time Trump was claiming it, Brady had not voted for Trump. Doesn’t mean it won’t today but as of yesterday, just another Trump lie.

    • doofus says:

Drumpf lied?! I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!

I wonder if Coach will make a statement?…because, though I don’t know what he sounds like enough to make a judgement, when I read the letter, it sounded a LOT more like Drumpf than Coach B (from what I DO know…).

I mean, “tremendous”, “unbelievable” and “beautifully” sure sound Drumpf-like to me.

      • lightpurple says:

I don’t think “beautifully” is in Bill’s vocabulary. That letter did not sound like him at all.

      • Teebee says:

Oh yeah! That letter was almost verbatim how Trump speaks in his speeches. He’s such an idiot… I can’t believe he thinks he can get away with his fibs when the world is fact checking him in real time. It’s like he’s making calls on a rotary phone and before he’s even dialled the number the world is shouting “WRONG!”

    • sherry says:

Giselle responded to someone on her Instagram who asked if it were true she and Tom were voting for Trump. She said, “NO!”

  2. Sam says:

Except Tom Brady is apparently an inactive voter and is not associated to a political party. According to public records that is. So something tells me that Trump is a liar (no surprise there) and wanted a last ditch effort to try and win over the New England area. Something also tells me that this whole time folks were asking Brady about the election and when he never commented it’s because he really doesn’t care hence why he’s inactive.
Also in regards to Belichick or however you spell his name…he’s always been a liberal and sending out political endorsements which are a distraction isn’t his motto. That letter sounds nothing like him. Like I said above, I am 99.9% sure Trump is lying about this. Out of all the people he would pick, Brady and Belichick are the least vocal about stuff like this and never want to bring in outside distractions during football season. So yea I’m not buying it.

    • lightpurple says:

He has never endorsed a candidate and Trump is only the third presidential candidate he has known. He plays golf and bike rides with John Kerry.

      • Lady D says:

There was an article on the MSN home page this morning titled, Tom and Gisele do not support Donald Trump. I just went to read the story and it is no longer on their page. I’m going to have to hunt.
edit: Ryan Wilson CBS sportswriter has the story and a picture of Brady apparently voting in Brookline per CBS Boston.

  3. Nancy says:

Brady supports Donald, what a shock. They both have “hot” wives and wasn’t Tom the one who deflated footballs to win a championship. Birds of a feather I guess…

  4. QQ says:

Ok Hitler’s Mentee (per Luvvie) Satan pestilence and NYC Rats surely also endorsed you but we dont see you running ads on THAT

  5. LiterallyaShambles says:

How fitting. On the last day of her campaign, Hillary shares a message of togetherness. On the last day of his campaign, Cheese-Dusted antichrist shares delusions.

    • vaultdweller101 says:

I live in Florida, and the amount of people voting for this soulless orange garbage dumpster fire is terrifying. If I hear: “well, he’s a real man of the people!” one more time, I will punch someone.

Trump can’t win, right? So scary. I keep hoping that reason and sense will assert themselves at some point, but they never do.

      • Erinn says:

I work for a company based in Florida (I’m in Canada). A few of the higher ups came up to our office last week and said “well, we’re here for official business but figured we’d scope out some property while we’re here in case Trump wins”.

I was SUPER surprised they went there because honestly – I figured at least a good chunk of the CEO’s/CFO’s/Directors of the company would be pro-cheetoh.

It gave me a glimmer of hope.

      • Melly says:

The “blue collar billionaire” thing annoying the living hell out of me. Have they seen Trump’s home? The Vatican and Trump seem to have the same interior designer. Or how about his track record of screwing over small businesses? Or not paying taxes? Grrrrr.. There is nothing “blue collar” or “man of the people” about him. Blue collar people work hard and pay their dues. A man of the people actually care about people and their interest.

  6. Pedro45 says:

Ok, that letter is absurd. Belichick has never been that enthusiastic about anything in his own life, including Super Bowl wins and probably the births of his own kids.

    • lightpurple says:

Well, now, he was excited about the birth of that grandchild two weeks ago but otherwise, championships and everything else in life, a brief smile is about as enthusiastic as Bill is about to get.

      • Pedro45 says:

I know, I was being hyperbolic about kids/grandkids. But it’s absurd to claim that letter came from a man as famous for his terse communications as BB.

      • Carol says:

I need to hear Bill read that letter out loud. I cannot even imagine the word “beautiful” passing through his lips.

    • Sunnydaze says:

The repetition of “beautifully” sounds like Trump…why does he repeat words/phrases so much? Its so strange….he really speaks like a toddler just learning to string fragmented sentences together.

  7. Bageera says:

Gisele replied to someone on her Instagram recently to say that she did not support Trump. It was on the Guardian’s live rolling coverage this morning.

  8. Louise177 says:

The letter sounds so fake. But I do believe Tom and Bill are supporters.

    • Melly says:

If the letter is fake, could Tom or Gisele sue Trump? I know they never would, by theoretically could they?

  9. Brittney B. says:

Note to Donald: when you’re pretending to be someone else, drop the multiple occurrences of “tremendous” and “beautifully” and “remarkable”.

I mean, “your leadership is amazing”?! The delusions are so basic it’s almost embarrassing.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Sounds like that medical “report” from his doctor claiming he had the health of a titan.

      • Brittney B. says:

        Exactly like that!!

      • Whyme says:

Who Are These People: LOL! You’re exactly right. I don’t understand how his supporters let him get away with that and so much more. I just always imagine Clinton or President Obama doing that and how they would be ripped apart. Yet he doesn’t need to show anything to support all his lies. No real doctors health evaluation, no tax returns. It boggles the mind.

      • Melly says:

Or when Trump pretended to be his publicist or whatever. He was talking on the phone with a reporter saying Trump could get any woman he’d like.

  10. boredblond says:

‘Amazing’+his campaign slogan in a letter..yeah, right…is there nothing this man can be truthful about?

  11. trollontheloose says:

I suspect many celebrities pretending to be pro Hillary but secretly voting for Trump. And I also suspect that some celebrities think that there is a special day to vote exclusively for celebs.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

People in the arts tend to be more liberal-minded, lower and upper case “l.” I don’t think there’s any reason to doubt anyone who has come forward in public.

  12. stella in nh says:

the alleged orange sex offender will say anything to get elected. Because he was in New England and Tom and Bill are demigods, of course he used their names in vain. I don’t think that it will do him much good.

  13. Belle Epoch says:

I SO HOPE WE NEVER SEE THIS DERANGED S.O.B. EVER, EVER AGAIN! Melania should dump his ass. His brand is ruined and future hotels will be called “Scion.” He has 3500 lawsuits against him and I hope every one of them gets a chunk of gold toilet.

    • Christin says:

About Scion — I hope Toyota strongly objects to any attempt to trademark that name. Even though I don’t think it’s a standalone vehicle brand, it certainly mars the name for a respected company.

  14. Christin says:

I just finished reading a WaPo article about a disabled boy named JJ who can speak with a computer-aided device. He wanted to go to cheeto’s rally, and ended up being kicked out by the orange one himself. A 12 year-old boy with cerebral palsy — not only kicked out, but the crowd actually booed the boy and kicked/shoved his wheelchair.

He later got to briefly meet Obama at a rally, so the story has a happy ending. JJ feels he made a difference, by going to orange one’s rally and ‘saying’ DT mocks the disabled.

So if anyone doubts what we’re dealing with, look up JJ’s story.

    • doofus says:

      I saw that.

even if the kid was there to protest with a sign on his chair, how f*cking LOW do you have to be to kick a CHILD’S wheelchair?! I’m honestly surprised that Drumpf didn’t mock the kids electronic voice. SMH…

      • Christin says:

If I understood the story, the boy had two phrases in his electronic voice program, which his mother said were not that loud when played. Yet cheeto actually bragged that his crowd were always louder and drowned it out.

The lack of empathy is astounding.

    • Kay says:

I read that article and it made me cry. Trump and his deplorables are an absolute disgrace.

      • Christin says:

I wish the story had gotten some coverage yesterday, but it was posted late in the day. Yet I doubt it would matter to deplorable attitudes.

  15. Eric says:

Be prepared for Trump TV. It is set to launch after the election (I mean after Clockjerk Orange loses). On it you will be able to watch all the witchcraft from Breitbart and co demonizing HRC, Bill, et al. Or not.

  16. Snowflake says:

The daily mail has an article saying the plaintiff in the rape case against him made up the story. But if you read the article, it says she dropped the lawsuit due to death threats. So the daily mail made the conclusion she fabricated it and made that their headline. But supposedly according to trump, the media is biased against him.

    • vaultdweller101 says:

The Daily Fail is an utter joke. They love to shame women and enforce ye olde gender norms, while couching their gross opinions in quaint British-isms.

    • I Choose Me says:

Saw that on Yahoo and made the mistake of reading a few comments below the article. Why? WHY did I do it? I should know better. I know it’s not good for my blood pressure. Not surprised the always misogynistic Daily Fail has put that spin on it.

  17. Sansa says:

Kaiser finally the campaign is over thank you for helping to celebrate with this amazing story. It is the funniest story I have read on your site I laughed for a few minutes. Great piece thanks for what we can only hope that now Donald will go away, I doubt it. I would imagine the letter to DT was more along the lines of “leave Tom Brady alone he has to play Sunday’. Peace to all today and VOTE> .

  18. AJ says:

I live in NH and voted this morning. I had one of my daughters with me and was so proud to vote for (hopefully) our first woman president. It was such a special moment to share with her and explain the significance. Not to mention after voting in MA all my life, it was kinda cool voting in a swing state, where my vote might actually determine the outcome. We’re with her!
I really hope NH does the right thing. I feel like I’m living in Trump country. His signs are everywhere. It’s repulsive.

    • stella in nh says:

My daughter is coming home to NH from college to vote. She could have voted absentee (has in past elections) but this is her first Presidential election so she wanted to experience it live. Poor kid is so stressed out over this one.

  19. Lady D says:

So when do we know the outcome? Soon, dinner time, midnight? Please don’t say it’s tomorrow.

    • Christin says:

Could be as early as 11 PM Eastern. Depends on several toss-up states, mostly in the Eastern time zones.

  20. Kori says:

If it’s untrue (and I hate the Pats so I’m hoping is IS) this is a new kind of lie even for Trump. It’s one thing to say Brady supports him, blah blah. Words can be twisted around. But to actually compose a letter and say BB wrote it? I hope its just a huge sign of his desperation.

  21. Olenna says:

WSJ Headline: Donald Trump Says Loss Would Spell ‘Single Greatest Waste of Time’. As if it wasn’t already confirmed, this just says he doesn’t give a fuk about anyone but himself.

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/donald-trump-stakes-claim-to-florida-as-home-turf-1478542526

  22. Rhiley says:

I caught like 2 seconds of some of the stuff Trump was saying yesterday, and it was just so sad. Stuff like, “If I don’t win, this will all have been for nothing. This would have been a complete waste of my money and my time.” No praise for the people who support him. Nothing. It was doom and gloom. It was awful.

  23. Erica_V says:

So WEEI is reporting/confirming that Bill did in fact write the letter but have yet to name their source. I’m disgusted honestly.

Also they are confirming that TB voted via absentee ballot on Monday morning just after 10AM.

    • Kori says:

A reporter posted a photo of Tom posing with workers in the polling place but Brady said he missed the deadline. Very weird.

  24. CF98 says:

    The jokes write themselves.
