Billy Bob Thornton on Angelina Jolie: ‘I never felt good enough for her’

Billy Bob B&W

Russell Westbrook covers the December issue of GQ, but I don’t really care about him (sorry). But inside the issue, there’s a great interview with Billy Bob Thornton, who is currently promoting Bad Santa 2. I didn’t know the first Bad Santa movie – where BBT played a drunken louse and verbally abusive Santa – did well enough to earn a sequel, but here we are. This chapter of BBT’s career is somewhat interesting, in that he’s probably doing the best acting work of his career these days. Following his amazing turn on the first season of Fargo, he’s also doing a new Amazon series called Goliath, where he plays a disgraced lawyer looking for vengeance. Anyway, you can read the full GQ story here. Some highlights:

Why his marriage to Angelina Jolie didn’t work out: “I never felt good enough for her. I’m real uncomfortable around rich and important people,” he adds. But Billy didn’t feel any pressure from their relationship to change. As he says, “I like how I am.” He and Angie are still friends, though, he says, and they talk every few months.

His band, The Boxmasters: In true Billy Bob fashion, he’s blunt about what he wants from the music: fans to respond to the songs he writes not just the band. “You like my band?” he says. “What was I, just f–king masturbating up there? I wrote every f–king word to those songs.” Another pet peeve: When people approach him after the show with a Sling Blade DVD to sign. “Sure, I’ll sign your Sling Blade DVD,” he says now. “And you can go home and f–ck missionary like a metronome and never have an original creative idea in your life.”

He’s done with directing: It’s the heartbreak from flopped films in the aftermath of Sling Blade’s success, films like All the Pretty Horses (2000) or Jayne Mansfield’s Car (2012)––“Nobody saw it. Nobody cared”––that have driven Thornton to his decision not to write and direct movies anymore. “I’m just going to be in the Boxmasters. I’m just going to be in a band and be an actor. That’s it,” he says. “It takes too much out of you to write a movie and direct it and spend you know, a year and a half of your life on it and then have people either shit on it or not see it. Maybe if I make it to 85 or something, I’ll sit around and write a novel.”

On shock-comedy: “People have made sure of that, that you can’t shock anybody anymore,” Billy says of his upcoming film Bad Santa 2 and the growing need to shock viewers due to the rise of dark internet comedy since the first Bad Santa release in 2003. “It’s not just because of movies and TV. It’s because of what’s happening in the world. It’s like, well, surely no one’s ever, like, killed a bunch of rabbits with a hatchet and then ate them in front of a group of kindergartners, and you look it up and, sure enough, somebody did it.”

He’s sure the critics will hate ‘Bad Santa 2’: “’Oh, my God, did you see Joe Dirt 2? It’s atrocious.’ Who gives a sh-t? Then don’t go see it. Don’t write about it, you know? You take away people’s right to like what they want to like by influencing people who are very easily influenced.”

[From GQ]

I don’t think Angelina and BBT broke up because Angelina started hanging around fancy rich people. I think they broke up because Angelina outgrew him – they were fine when she was the wild child, but when she grew up and began working with the UNHCR and traveling all the time and discovering herself through her advocacy and activism, that was the beginning of the end. Plus, I’m pretty sure he cheated on her. As for what BBT says about critics… what? “You take away people’s right to like what they want to like by influencing people who are very easily influenced.” No. I disagree. People who are easily influenced will still want to see dumb, stupid movies because of course they will!

  1. Lennox says:

    He sounds charming.

  2. BJ says:

So he has a fear of antique furniture and is uncomfortable around rich people,I wonder if the two are related?

  3. Ana says:

Angie back with BBT would be Epic. LOL

    • YepiSaidit says:

He’s seems very much in love with his wife and kid. She’s said the men she married were better as friends – she’ll probably say the same about the last one she married …

I’m guessing She’ll stay single for years and go back to having lovers !! That’s another thing she said back in the day- that she knew she’d end up single with friends and lovers to keep her company.

    • Butterscotch says:

      I loved them together.

  4. notgonnalie says:

    He’s so unattractive.

    • Amy says:

Seriously? He takes my breath away. (And I’ll never understand making a comment just to say something negative about someone’s looks.)

    • Shambles says:

      I think he’s sexy.
Plus, in every picture I’ve seen of him with Angelina, they look like they spent every waking second of their time together having insane sex. So there’s got to be something there.

    • aang says:

I find him quite attractive. And his acting is top notch.

    • Nameless says:

I never got his appeal either. Slingblade was terrible and dude seems to have serious issues.

    • BubbaMagnet says:

It’s funny how someone elicits responses in folks that are the direct opposite of each other. My first response to the photo above was “Damn, BBT really has it going on!” While watching Goliath a few weeks ago I kept finding him charming and attractive too. . . .

      • BonnieJean says:

I think he is an incredible actor & he definitely has the sexy going on.

      • Pamela says:

It IS funny how divisive some people can be looks-wise. I find him soooo sexy (though not so much once he opens his bratty mouth). That said, in his case, I can see why some people really don’t like him. There are other celebs where if I find them attractive, I can’t see WHAT someone else hates about them, if that makes sense.

      • Raquel says:

He’s gotten better looking over time. He looks great now.
Ha, I hate that that’s often the way for men. Sometimes for women too, but not as much.

    • susiecue says:

I’ve always found him dirty-hot. I’m glad his plastic surgery has settled because he was looking weird there for awhile.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

I have to disagree about that, notgonnalie. I was once at a gathering he was at, and he really is oddly, unconventionally, magnetically attractive — and maybe the most genuinely, effortlessly, I-don’t-give-a-shit cool person I have ever been in the same room with.

    • Pandy says:

Yes, tiny man that I could bench press and ugly on the inside. He’s a tool.

    • Fl girl says:

      I think he is hot!

  5. detritus says:

Bad Santa 2 is kind of a cult classic weirdly.

I keep forgetting about BBT the musician, with his fun ideas about music and being a creative musician. I wish I wasn’t reminded.

  6. Arock says:

hes lucky to be working. If he had any this else to to offer, other than stories about his ex lover, then fine but I doubt anyone leans into hear about how he went all method for bad santa. Eyeroll

  7. Locke Lamora says:

If someone comes up to you to sign anything you’ve been in, sign it and be happy someone cares. I hate when these people complain about that.

Out of all of Angie’s husbands, he seemed like the best fit.

    • Bettyrose says:

IKR? What the actual f**k! Someone wants his autograph so they must have a boring sex life??

    • detritus says:

Don’t listen to the radio broadcast where he talks about his band and how he doesn’t want people talking about his acting any more. It will kill any remaining sex appeal.
That was years ago though, I’m surprised he’s back to movies.

I do think he was a great fit with Angie. They were hot together. I thought she was great with Brad too though, so not sure on my judgement.

    • Ana says:

JLM was her best fit IMO

      • Artemis says:

Nah, he was one of the 2 men she was having casual sex with and it didn’t turn into something serious. Dare I say they were more than FWB because they were spotted together quite often too, with Maddox present so I think there was a flicker of trying to make it work as a couple. They certainly didn’t hide themselves from the paparazzi (see them visiting a tattoo parlor and making out).
But she ended up with Pitt instead. At the start of MAMS, she was still seeing JLM.

I think it’s because she wanted to have a lot of children and she was travelling a lot because otherwise he is big into charity work too, they even worked together for Gilley’s Peace One Day and Jolie’s ‘A Place In Time’ around 2004-2006. But other than that his life is quite calm and low-key. He’s working steadily in TV now and all those things would not have happened with Jolie. She still is quite extreme, moves around a lot for work and because it’s in her nature to move on quickly to the next thing, she needs it. She says she loves it. Loads of kids and charity work. And throughout it all she knows how to control and maintain her brand/image. JLM is not here for all of that. During the ‘Peace One Day’ press conference he even stated he was stunned by all the flashing lights of the cameras but that it was needed to bring awareness.

Plus, he’s been through Jolie’s crazy. Even if her crazy now is healthy and productive, I don’t see how he would fit with her current crazy lifestyle. He moved on from Jolie in 2006 which again indicates they probably were trying to get serious and she moved on with Pitt so he moved on too. Only has 1 kid and his wife like him, works low-key and steadily.

Jolie choose the Moviestar lifestyle, they are just incompatible, always have and always will be. Don’t forget, JLM always praised Jolie and they remained friends but it was Jolie who divulged tidbits about their wedding and marriage, how she fell in love with Jenny Shimizu during the marriage, her FWB years later and claiming JLM was basically the one who got away (but then she ended up with Pitt shortly after so why even speak on an ex-husband when you fell in love with another man?). Now what do we know about JLM’s current marriage, family and lifestyle? Or for that matter, details about his marriage to Jolie? Right…People forgot how OTT in oversharing Jolie is, past and present.

      • YepiSaidit says:

JLM said Angelina is a sweet girl and nothing like the wild woman she portrayed herself as back in the day!! Can’t find the old quote…
I’m pretty sure she lied -to freak out the interviewer- about wearing his blood on her shirt during their wedding- once saw photos and she was wearing a black haulter dress to wed him

Yes, I agree that JLM was her best fit- she explained that they were too young at the time but back then she hoped they would be together when older…

  8. BooBooLaRue says:

    bitch please

  9. Bettyrose says:

Those comments put the cheating a lot more in perspective, though. I was stunned by it at the time because she was so out of his league, but it makes twisted sense that you’d cheat on someone out of insecurity.

  10. Shambles says:

I once dated a guy who started treating me like I wasn’t important, stopped giving me any attention whatsoever, would barely listen to me, and made me feel like I literally had to beg him to have sex with me.
Turns out he felt like he wasn’t good enough for me so he started treating me like crap. It happens.

    • ShinyGrenade says:

I never got that excuse : you are too good for me.
Mostly, it is just arseholes giving shitty excuses.

  11. Ariel says:

I totally concur with the she outgrew him theory. Her humanitarian work changed her. So did becoming a mother. To quote my favorite line from Overboard: When you have a baby, you can’t be the baby.
And I think becoming a mom to a real baby (as opposed to a man-child) cut through everything else.

  12. Jen says:

    Mad much, Bro?!

  13. CityGirl says:

I put off seeing Bad Santa for years because I just knew I would Hate It. Saw it and have to admit, I laughed out loud a lot….I’m not sure what that says about me -_-

  14. Jayna says:

I remember going to see Bad Santa on Christmas evening. LOL

I loved him in Goliath. We just finished watching the full series on Amazon.

    • Bonbons says:

Ha! It’s a day after Christmas ritual at my house. Time to rinse the saccharine of the holiday away with black humor!

    • Flora says:

I made the mistake to watch this with my Mum during Xmas. Needless to say I changed channel as soon as BBT mentioned anal sex.

I met some people who worked with him on the the ill-fated London Fields film. They had nothing but good things to say about him. He was very friendly, unlike Amber Heard.

  15. Freddy Spaghetti says:

He’s a great actor. But am I missing something because I thought he sounded more than a tad batty during the interview?

  16. hey-ya says:

…did he write & direct The Gift…what a misfire that was …a gossipy charlatan sends an innocent man to jail…but anyway…he still looks good…I had to duck out of BS1 though …being mean to lonely kids isnt nice to watch…

    • Pamela says:

“…being mean to lonely kids isnt nice to watch…”

Spoiler Alert- He ends up being nice to him later in a twisted but heart-warming way. I like the movie, I think because it is so dark compared to traditional holiday fare. Obv YMMV, but just wanted to let you know it doesn’t stay mean the whole way through.

  17. Hon-ey says:

He always looks so dirty but not in a good way.

  18. HK9 says:

Someone needs just a little bit of therapy.

  19. atorontogal says:

Why is he still talking about her? To stay relevant? I don’t like him after his comments about Canadians – I really don’t like him for talking about someone he once loved when she is down.

    http://www.mtv.com/news/1609026/billy-bob-thornton-booed-onstage-cancels-canada-tour/

  20. Olenna says:

Really, Billy Bob? You need to own your feelings. Don’t blame her or anyone else for your sense of inadequacy.

  21. Frosty says:

I really like him as an actor but he always comes off as such a disagreeable, peevish d*** in interviews.

  22. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Great actor and while i know he can be a bit odd in real like i think I still would, there is something compellingly sexy about him – i can see what the attraction was for Jolie. When they were together they came across as passionate and intense people.

  23. ShinyGrenade says:

“Sure, I’ll sign your Sling Blade DVD,” he says now. “And you can go home and f–ck missionary like a metronome and never have an original creative idea in your life.”

    Such a charming person. Not.
He sounds like a massive prick.

    Great actor, but disagreeable dude.

  24. Nibbi says:

i feel like he’s just stating the obvious, there.
