Gwyneth Paltrow feels like she needs to open her mind more, post-election

Did you know there was such a thing as the Airbnb Open conference? Do we really need a conference to talk about Airbnb, which is just a home-sharing company? Not really. But the conference happened and Gwyneth Paltrow spoke, which tells you a lot about Airbnb and the audience for this conference. Goop spoke and made a joke about how she needs to get boozy and Xanaxy to travel with her kids. But then the conversation turned to politics and Gwyneth seemed… different.

Parents need two things when traveling with their kids, according to Gwyneth Paltrow.

“Xanax and alcohol,” she joked during a conversation at the Airbnb Open conference on Saturday, before quickly adding, “No, my kids, actually, they’re great travelers.” The 44-year-old said she most enjoys traveling with her 12-year-old daughter Apple and 10-year-old son Moses because, “I love seeing things through their eyes.”

During the talk, the goop founder also spoke about issues closer to home.

“It’s such an exciting time to be an American because we are at this amazing inflection point,” she said. Expounding on her point, she continued, “People are clearly tired of the status quo, and … it’s sort of like someone threw it all in the air and we’re going to see how it all lands. It’s very important for me, personally, now more than ever, to create a community and to remember the humanity of everybody and to create love and … understanding.”

Of the country working together after Donald Trump’s election, she said, “The most amazing thing for me about this election is I felt … ‘I don’t understand the opposition well enough at all.’ I’m not going to tell you what side I’m on, but my big takeaway was, ‘I really need to open my mind and understand better because I don’t.’”

[From Page Six]

“I’m not going to tell you what side I’m on”?? Gwyneth has always been a pretty big Democrat. She’s given money and hosted fundraisers for Democrats in past years. But in 2015, there was a story about how Hillary Clinton didn’t want Gwyneth to host any fundraisers for her because Hillary thought Gwyneth would turn the fundraiser into some tacky-ass Goop-shilling production rather than a political fundraiser. So if Clinton did deny Gwyneth last year, did Gwyneth switch her support over to Trump? I seriously doubt it. But I do think she’s being pretty careful about what she says. I’ve thought about that too – when President Trump makes his list of Mouthy Brown People To Deport, I could be on it. But Gwyneth is a rich, blonde white woman – she won’t be on any of Trump’s deportation lists. Then again, she does speak Spanish. Maybe Goop is right to be careful!

Hilariously, during this same conversation, Gwyneth also admitted that as she shifted from Hollywood actress to Professional Gooper, “I had no idea how much I was in a career where everyone kissed my ass, and now people are like, ‘F—k you.'” Yeah, Gwyn. We know. We know that you lived in a bubble where everyone kissed your ass. And guess what, baby girl? YOU STILL LIVE THERE.

Also: Gwyneth published her annual Goop Gift Guide and it’s still pretty clueless/elitist, although it’s better organized this year.

A good amount of the white women who follow goop and buy her products were Trump supporters…she has to be careful, and she knows it. Although, I think she sounds a little too peppy about the “change” coming our way.

    • INeedANap says:

I agree — this seems like a business move. Rich white women (and aspirationally rich white women) have typically embraced the trappings of patriarchy because it affords them certain protections. This is her base.

    • Esmom says:

She sounds way too excited about the “change.” It has to be about not alienating her customers otherwise I’d call her insane.

      • mee says:

yes, love how she says it’s an “exciting time” to be american. terrifying, depressing, surreal, yes. but, exciting? sounds just like one of those white nationalists

      • WTW says:

Gwyneth is part-Jewish, and it’s really not cool that she’s choosing not to take sides when Nazi activity and reports of swastikas are rising. This is the time to have morals, even if it means taking a business hit.

      • Sunglasses Aready says:

She looks smug and ‘old’. Its time to cut that hair.

Do not be surprised everyone these celebs will now kiss the ring of ‘comb over daddy’ aka DRUMP

    • Rhiley says:

Also, I read, and it seems consistent, that a lot of New York celebrities are afraid to speak out against Donald Trump because they are worried about what it could do to their social standing within New York. I can buy that. I can see Goop and Ivanka being friends. Maybe not best friends but they are probably in the same New York social circle. Alec Baldwin can be a pretty abusive guy, but I have to say, I like how he is sticking it to trump. He knows just how to get under his thin thin thin skin.

      • Esmom says:

Really? I remember reading that Trump was not liked or accepted in the “right” social circles. That it was one of the reasons he ran for POTUS, so he could stick it to people who have rejected him. And somehow I’m don’t think the people he wants to impress are impressed or ever will be.

    • Alex says:

How exciting for white people to “see how it lands”. How nice to be so blase about the next 4 years.

    • GreenieWeenie says:

      Gwyneth is Jewish.

      • Sunglasses Aready says:

Under Trump the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer and die. The rich will always look out for their own interests always.

      • ol cranky says:

Her father was Jewish but she is not, nor is she a practicing Jew. I can see Gwyneth and Ivanka (who converted) both claiming their WASP heritage to protect themselves and their fortunes if we come under the rule of jack-booted thugs

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Yeah, it’s irritating how she seems to be trying to paint Trump’s win as a positive thing. “It’s very important for me, personally, now more than ever, to create a community and to remember the humanity of everybody….” How uninformed and sheltered (or worse) does a person have to be to think Trump, Pence, and the dangerous bigots who are celebrating them are going to do any of that?

  2. Sam says:

Please. She’s a woman. Blonde and tall. Trump won’t deport her. He will just use her for pleasure as her punishment if she spoke out against him. Anyways I hate Goop with a burning passion and I tell her to be quiet 99.9% of the time she speaks because she’s usually shouting off nonsense but I’m not going to tell her to be quiet or whatever in this case. It’s bad enough the most qualified woman lost to the least qualified man. I want to hear what woman have to say about this election and more. I am done having them be silenced. Jokingly or not.

    • almondmilk says:

You know, Gwyneth was on that ancestry show a couple years back (the network Lisa Kudrow one not the better PBS Skip Gates ancestry program). She’s from, as she described rabbinacal royalty (of course). Long line of rabbis. On her beloved father’s side.

Yesterday, Jake Tapper of cnn had to call his network and staff of his own show and ream then out, because while on vacation he tuned in, and saw that the banner under the two paneled guests read: “Alt-right Spencer Wonders if Jews are Human”

Abhorrent. Chilling. Jake was beside himself.

Yes, that was the discussion – the host filling in for Jake (a guy named Sciutto) was talking to two people discussing if it would benefit Trump to distance himself from the alt-right nazis who thought this way.

Jake, who’s also Jewish was appalled. As any decent sane person would be. Mostly at that banner.

This is where we are folks.

So if i were Gwyneth Paltrowich I would most definitely PICK AN EFFING SIDE!!

What a weak, sad example for her children that she gets all mush mouthed about people who regularly send Jewish reporters and bloggers images of gas chambers, where they are in them and Trump is pushing the button.

    • Madailein says:

Tall, blonde half Jews were killed in the Holocaust, too–all they needed was a Jewish parent, which Gwyneth had. I doubt the Alt-Right considers Gwyneth to be anything but a rich Jewish Hollywood type. She should most certainly be fearful, b/c she is far from “white” in the eyes of the Alt-Right, or their many connected groups. In fact, of all the “non white” ethnicities, neo-Nazis say they would choose to *exterminate* the Jews, while all other minorities, though allowed to live, would be displaced to their “home” lands. My half Jewish husband is scared for the lives of some of his family, as are my Jewish friends, and if Gwyneth had any conscience or clarity at all, and were less insulated, she would speak out against Trump and Co, herself. What a vacant, oblivious, uncaring shell of a woman she is.

  3. Sixer says:

    WTF? WTAF? WTUF? WTFF?

Yes, dear, scorched earth is such an inviting, exciting and stimulating prospect. Perhaps you could do some branding around it.

    • I Choose Me says:

I’m pretty well versed with WTF and WTAF but what does WTUF and WTFF stand for?

And yeah, Goopy needs to have all the seats. Every.damn.one.

      • Sixer says:

        A = actual, U = utter, F = effing!

Gwynnie thinks that the western countries crashing and burning is a new way to brand kumbaya. Even with the bar set as low as it for this one, I expected better!

  4. Bex says:

I get that she might have to be a bit careful so that she doesn’t alienate her base, but no Gwyneth, it is not ‘an exciting time’. It’s a terrifying one.

    • zinjojo says:

She’s excited about the tax break the rich people are about to get.

And I agree, it’s as terrifying a time as I’ve seen in my life, and I’m old.

  5. Ela says:

‘An exciting time to be an American’?????!!!!!! Proof #68955 of Goop’s privilege.

    • annaloo. says:

Truly, this is one of those times where she is the last person I want to hear opine on anything. No one needs her thoughts on anything except her employees and her kids.

  6. Clare says:

‘It’s such embarrassing/terrifying time to be an American because we are at this amazing inflection point,”

    There, fixed it.

  7. Misa says:

Really? It’s pretty clear to me that she means she voted for Trump. “The opposition”? Exciting time? Somebody threw everything up into the air? Come on! It can’t be clearer than this! Plus, as she used to be openly Dem, why not taking a side now? So she voted for Trump. And why would it be surprising? If you look at her blog, well, it’s the most white elitist thing one could imagine. The only non-white friend she has is Beyonce, and well, Bey is above and beyond any race, being a super-mega-superstar (who, in a not so distant past, did have her skin bleached almost white and her hair turned platinum in ads and music videos, so that people started saying that she wanted to channel Gwyneth… IDK, but I don’t want to irritate the Beyonce’s fans out there). And it’s not only a race thing, she is a class elitist, too. This is even more clear, looking at her GOOP and listening to her interviews, where she has repeatedly rejected any discussion of her privilege, never once acknowledging it. Gwyneth had any reason to vote for Trump, and she did. Americans need to be prepared for many “Dem” personalities to come out as, actually, Trump fans.

    • huh says:

I’m not a Beyonce fan in the slightest but these skin lightening allegations sound so ignorant. She is a multiracial woman. Her skin darkens and lightens depending.

      • Lee says:

Yeah. I’m mixed and go from a ghostly pale beige to a much deeper tawny over the course of the year. Getting darker and lighter due to climate/environment/etc. isn’t exclusive to white women.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

Exactly. And pointing those basic facts out don’t automatically make someone a member of the beyhive.

    • Lalu says:

I highly doubt she is a Trump supporter or that she didn’t vote for Hillary. She is an open Democrat. I took it more that she was surprised by what happened and trying to be positive about it.
Also, there are lots of privileged elitists that vote Dem just like Republican. Hollywood is super Democrat. She’s being politically correct. Typical Gwenyth. Nothing to see here.

    • jinni says:

I am really hoping that when she means she didn’t understand the opposition that she meant that she looked down on the rural and flyover state people because as a bi-coastal elitist she thought she was so much smarter then them and never bothered to give them the time of day. With this new election she has realized their numbers and power and wants to understand why they voted the way that they did.

At least that is what I hope she means, but considering her friend RDj is a Republican I wouldn’t be shocked if what you surmised about her is true and they both voted Trump.

      • Lalu says:

Jinni… I think you are right about everything except that she might have voted trump. Having one republican friend (that probably voted for Johnson) doesn’t mean she jumped ship and supported trump. Girl is surrounded by liberals and democrats. That is her world. Rdj is the exception to the rule in Hollywood.

      • Susannah says:

This is what I thought too. That Gwynnie just assumed that everybody thought like her and when she found out they didn’t, it shocked her. She needs to know why they feel that way, why they don’t think like Goop.
Unfortunately for her, there’s no understanding the Trump voter, the only common denominator that I can see is anger against their own life and people who think differently to them.

    • Sam says:

Misa nothing you said makes any sense. Goop is an open democrat. She doesn’t hide that away. She talks about understanding the opposition because the opposition won. Why would she try to understand the democrats point of view when 1). She’s a democrat and 2). The democrats lost and won’t be running the country. Honestly it’s comments like these that piss me off. Just because she’s a rich white woman doesn’t mean she’s a Trump supporter and I’m kind of tired of that narrative being played out. Enough.

Also @Jinni RDJ was in an anti-trump ad a few months ago. He didn’t vote for Trump.

    • Fire rabbit says:

Exactly. Banner used almost the same phrase “we’ll throw it up in the air and see what sticks” in the Hollywood Reporter story the other day. She voted Trump. Privileged white woman vote condemning everyone who is not Her/Them.

  8. Josefina says:

If she didnt want to alienante anyone, she couldve remained silent.

    • Lalu says:

      Yes… She could have.
I personally wish all of the Hollywood elite would keep their mouths shut about politics but they don’t. Every four years we have people threatening to move to Canada and then they never do. Like it’s some sort of threat. Like their opinions matter.

  9. minx says:

It’s NOT an “exciting” time to be an American! It’s a horrifying, frightening, sickening, divisive time.
She’s a wealthy pampered white celebrity who can go to another country if she chooses.
She is such an uninformed airhead.

    • K2 says:

      This.

Anyone who finds this exciting is hugely privileged. In her case, she can literally move anywhere in the world she wants, with her money, but she doesn’t need to, because she’s in a very safe demographic, anyway. Most people are saddled with their nationality, even when a psycho is suddenly in charge and they are in the crosshairs of new psychotic policy.

  10. robyn says:

No open mind to bigotry, lady!

  11. Jess says:

Exciting time? Is she mad? It’s a freaking terrifying time for America and the rest of the world.

  12. poppy says:

so relieved she is excited! was waiting with baited breath! 🙄

her answer to life is probably xanax and booze. there’s no other explanation for her total obliviousness.

fairly desperate of her to take any speaking gig she can scrounge but goop must be heard!

  13. CoKatie says:

It is about time she woke up. Her website with the thousand dollars sheets and cashmere throws while the majority of us are struggling to just get by. Mind you, it sounds more likely that’s she playing a role for us now, but whatever…

  14. Kristiec68 says:

Does anyone know what “an amazing inflection point” is? I am seriously asking. I’m wondering if somehow I missed this ted-talk like term.

  15. QQ says:

She is only being coy because the Ivanka Voter ( aka well groomed, college educated certain affluence type gal) IS her consumer base

  16. Cleo says:

GOOP has picked a side, same side as always: her own.

  17. ash says:

In that last photo, she looks like one of those blonde nordic aliens that live in the clouds of venus (too much ufology, i know)

I would bet a small amount of money (1 GOOP dollar) that she is apart of that startling percent of “educated/affluent YT women folk” who voted overwhelming for trump…. ughh just when I was just starting to like her as my blonde bourgie catty girl friend… shes ridic….

I would really expect this type of statement (that was said by GOOP) from Reese (who im sure was apart of said group previously mentioned) at a DraperJames shilling/ or latest “white women” entrepreneurial conference event. LOL

  18. I’m kind of glad she didn’t give her opinion of who she voted for and the other side is wrong etc. She was generic about her thoughts.

It’s so self-absorbed for a singer, actor, director, dancer to use the platform that your average American isn’t afforded to try and sway an election. It’s so arrogant. Clearly, no one cared about their opinion this go around. But they sure as hell tried. If the person working at a bakery or bank don’t get to go on tv and tell the world, ‘look at me and hear what I think on politics because I think I’m so important’ then I don’t want to hear it from an artist who was given that platform for something else. Being famous doesn’t mean you know a darn thing about politics or history and are certainly in no position to tell others how they should think or vote. Just vote and talk amongst your family & friends on your own time like everybody else.

  19. Rachelle says:

You could be on his list? Get over yourself. If you’re a criminal and living here illegally, then maybe, and in that case you shouldn’t be upset or surprised. Stop acting like every foreign person in America is going to randomly be deported.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

You’re forgetting the fact that for the racist pro-Trump white nationalist crowd brown= ‘Illegals’ and ‘not Americans’. These ‘take back our country’ folks want to treat ‘American’ as synonymous with whiteness.
