The Cannes Film Festival opened last week, and this year’s festivities seem to be subdued. Many are blaming the overall bad global economy, some are blaming the lack of any huge, exciting films premiering in the first week. No disrespect to the incredible talent of Tilda Swinton, but when her sketchy hair is the biggest news coming out of opening night, the festival has issues.
Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino are trying to bring some of the excitement back to Cannes with their premiere of Inglourious Basterds. Brad has already arrived in Cannes, and will begin to do press shortly. But where is Angelina Jolie? As it turns out, she’s still in New York. Will she come? Does the fact that Brad and Angelina are not stuck on each other all the time mean that the tabloid ultimatum has come true? Have they broken up, just as the tabloids predicted? Actually, People Magazine is saying that Angelina is “expected” to show up, all to support her man:
As the sea along the Cote D’Azur shimmered in the sunshine, Brad Pitt arrived to add some further sparkle to his familiar springtime haunt, the Cannes Film Festival.
Pitt, 45, was spotted Saturday at the Hotel du Cap, having lunch on a balcony after flying in from the U.S. It is said he is staying in a chalet on the grounds of the highly exclusive hotel, just along the coast in Antibes, on the Riviera.
The star is in the South of France for his fourth Cannes Film Festival in five years. And, if Angelina Jolie, 33, joins him in the next few days as is expected, this will mark the third time they have strolled the palm-lined Croisette waterfront together in as many years.
On this visit Pitt is showcasing his movie from director Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds, which premieres at the festival Wednesday. The filmmaker has described Pitt’s character in the WWII drama as “a hillbilly straight from the mountains of Tennessee.”

Some sources were reporting that the whole issue of Angelina coming to Cannes isn’t about the breakup rumors, it’s about her shooting schedule for Salt. She may only get a day or two off, if that. So she could just be flying in to walk the red carpet with Brad, and then she’ll leave within hours. The press wouldn’t be paying such close attention if they hadn’t spent the last three months working themselves into a frenzy about how Brad and Angelina’s relationship is at death’s door. Even though I enjoy seeing Brad and Angelina on a red carpet, it would be funny to see the reaction of the tabloids if Angelina just decided to stay in New York, and let Brad have the Cannes spotlight to himself. Because who really needs to fly all the way to the South of France only to leave within 24 hours? That’s not much of a vacation.

The people paying for “Salt” would have to be pretty stupid to not give that to her, if it meant having Brangie do the same for their own premiere.

The break up stories have been going on for 4 years, so I really don’t believe them, but the two of them have been looking extremely unhappy in photos of late (the few photos that are out there). It seems like when she’s home he takes off (concert in LA, NY shopping, Louisiana, and now France). Hope for the sake of the kids they can work things out. Breaking up a family is not as easy as leaving a childless marriage.

Showing up at the IB premiere would help her partner not flying in for a week and sitting in a hotel room while he does interviews when she is in the middle of filming. I imagine Sonia that if they were both there, they wouldn’t be sitting in a hotel room. They would be out schmoozing at parties and showings and drumming up publicity for each other’s film and future projects, much like they did last year when Angelina had two films at Cannes and Brad had none.
As an aside and not particularly directed at anyone, the filming schedule of Salt must have been planned mostly around Miss Jolie and her availability once she signed on for it. It’s not as if the dates of Cannes were any big secret, I don’t understand why this wasn’t negotiated beforehand. It’s not as if she is not an A-list actress who can more or less dictate her conditions after all.

Actually, the French press has been reporting that he arrived on Friday evening, and was seen lunching on the patio of the hotel in Cap d’Antibes where he is staying (which is not in Cannes, for those of you who haven’t situated it geographically yet).
It would be quite simple to avoid the paparazzi by landing at another regional airport in France and then taking a helicopter to the hotel. There is an airport in Hyeres, in Marseille, Lyon, Bastia or even in not very distant Italy etc that are all within chopper distance, yet aren’t Nice where all the paparrazzi are probably waiting.
Just to play the Devil’s advocate, supposing Angelina hasn’t yet decided to come or not, would Brad be out and about alone feeding the rumours?

@Janice: Being neutral on the Angie/Jen on-going saga and being one from a third world country, I think I’m qualified to address you.
Firstly, although marriage is important to the people of Africa, we remain a nation that practices promiscuity and polygamy. I mean, the new South African president, Jacob Zuma, has two wives and has been married at least four times. Lots of people in third world countries have more than one wife. It’s a norm. So, I highly doubt they will hold AJ in contempt. In fact, you are more likely to hear someone from a third world country (who really don’t care much about celebrity news and everything Hollywood like) ask why Brad didn’t simply marry AJ and keep JA as his first wife.
Also, I think it would be unfair if I didn’t correct you and proclaim that many people have indeed benefited from Bono, Jolie and Pitt. Bono has advocated change in Africa and continues to do amazing work in the sub-Sahara. Really, you need to educate yourself on this. Also, the money generated from Shiloh’s baby pictures has benefited many impoverished communities in Namibia (I lived in Namibia for a while, so I know). And in case you were wondering, more Africans know about Angelina Jolie than Jennifer Aniston. Not because Aniston is without child and a boyfriend/husband (which in itself is taboo in Africa), but because she has never been to Africa to carry out humanitarian work. Africans have a tendency to care more for the people they have personally met and benefited from – we remain a nation that many will never understand.
Angelina kissed her brother once in public for shock value when she was much younger…that was years ago! She did NOT “make out” with him. I really have to laugh at the obsessed, pea-size brains who are making more out of that incident than it really was!
