Natalie Portman in McQueen at Critics’ Choice: rain poncho or fabulous?

The Best Actress race is going to be very interesting to watch in the next few months. While Meryl Streep (who was absent from the Critics Choice Awards) picked up an award for Florence Foster Jenkins, Natalie Portman was on hand to pick up her award for Best Actress in a Drama. Add to that the fact that La La Land scored the most awards, meaning Emma Stone has a good shot too, and the actress race is totally in the air. Portman won for Jackie, obviously. Her maternity dress was Alexander McQueen. Does anyone else get rain poncho vibes from this? I think it’s the shiny quality of the fabric, plus her arms disappear into the cape. Much poncho. Very sack.

Speaking of winners, Moonlight is still racking up significant awards. Well-deserved, I might add. Mahershala Ali picked up Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, and the cast picked up the Best Ensemble Award. Naomie Harris wore a Stella McCartney dress which I (surprisingly) do not hate. Naomie could make a burlap sack look high-fashion though. And Janelle Monae (who is also part of the ensemble for Hidden Figures) wore this bold Nicci Hou dress.

    That’s an ugly dress.

  2. Donna says:

    Dreadful.

  3. Seraphina says:

Natalie’s dress only two words some to mind: hot mess.

And I’m with you on Harris’ dress. I like it to my surprise I like Stella’s creation.

    • detritus says:

      It’s bad.
It looks like someone’s fever dream come to life.

I also really like Harris’ dress, and Monae’s too. Although she’s probably the only one other than maybe Dita Von Teese that could work it.

    • ShoeAddict says:

I have ever understood Portmans choice of clothing. That dress resembles an expensive poncho that has 6 layers to add to each poncho.

  4. Kasia says:

Ugly dress but Jackie was absolutely wonderful. One of the best biopics ever. She really shouldn’t have much competition for Best Actress.

    • Lindsey says:

Thanks! I am glad to hear it. I was wondering about the film, biopics are sometimes tough to get right. It sounds like the clothes, hair, and make up are stunning as well. I will have to see it, Kasia!

    • lightpurple says:

She did a great job in that film.

      • nicole says:

I saw the trailer and said that is my kind of movie, love biopics, and she looks stunning as Jackie, the clothes and the style seems really good, I have to say I think Nathalie Portman is stunning and she has class too, but I dont like that dress she wore to these awards, but look forward always to her red carpet style.

Don’t love any of these either, but I appreciate the bold lines of Janelle’s.

    • NastyWoman` says:

Just tired of her wearing black and white all the time… She would look amazing in a bold color.

  6. Lindsey says:

So the overarching themes are see-through (this trend needs to die out), shoddy construction, incomplete or overworked ideas, and looking as budget as possible. It makes Allison Williams, in a dress I don’t think I’d normally love, and Viola Davis’ basic dress look amazing. Hopefully the see through and amateur sowing and construction trends are Over by the time the Oscars role around. Get it together!

Maybe Kate Middleton is a trendsetter after all. These dresses look like a more extreme version of her and her stylist’s DIY tailoring whenever they get their hands on a designer dress. And Chrissy Tegan(?) flashed everyone at the last big event.

  7. nica says:

Naomi Harris looks great. I really like the dress, and I’m surprised about that as it has that sheer skirt. And I’m a sucker for a tuxedo style.

  8. mkyarwood says:

    I like the checkerboard gown!

  9. LAK says:

    All very deserved awards.

  10. lightpurple says:

I like the boldness of Janelle’s dress but is she going for a Minnie Mouse look with those two mouse ears on her head?

  11. Kezia says:

Naomie’s dress is stunning. Love Janelle
    Monae’s lipstick so much!

  12. Bex says:

Natalie makes me laugh. Calling her Oscar a ‘false idol’ and then turning up at Critics’ Choice, of all places, in search of another! She’s magnificent in Jackie though, and I usually find her acting pretty terrible.

Janelle looks amazing IMO, not many people could pull that off.

    • Lindsey says:

She is only thinking of the salvation of the souls of others. She’ll magnanimously take all the false idols herself due to her enlightened mind she will resist the temptation to attach to much meaning to the award or let it become too revered in her life. Lesser minds may struggle with that. Lol

      • Bex says:

        How selfless of her!

      • HookedonCoffee says:

You are absolutely right. So many of her peers are soulless omnivores who would probably commit rape at the dinner table to be polite. It’s a good thing there exists a thinker like her to take the false idol and forget where she put it.

  13. Brea says:

I wish Amy Adams was in more of these Best Actress conversations.
Naomie Harris is stunning! And I know that black and white is Janelle’s “thing” but I wish she would mix it up with some bright colour or print from time to time.

  14. minx says:

How could Portman look at herself in that thing and think, wow, I look great! Let’s go!

  15. kri says:

Mr. Ali looks stunning but the ladies dresses here…meh.

  16. MrsBPitt says:

WOW…My mouth, literally, fell open when I saw Portman’s dress! What in the world made her think that was a good look?? That may just be the worst dress I have ever seen!!! I don’t even like the other dresses on this post very much, but how can I criticize any ensemble after the horror show that is Natalie Portman…..

    • HookedonCoffee says:

My guess is that she has been in the business too long. She hasn’t surrounded herself with the kind of straightforward non-sychophantic friends who tell people when they are about to embarrass themselves. That dress is what an army of yes-people willdo to a person…so the moral of the story is to choose your friends wisely.

  17. OTHER RENEE says:

Maybe she has pregnancy brain fog. She looked in the mirror and saw herself wearing a long gorgeous black dress and thought “I look great!”

    Naomie’s dress is gorgeous.

  18. teacakes says:

I see she’s Oscar baiting again. After calling the last one a ‘false idol’, no less.

  19. QQ says:

Dead Seriously??: I REALLY REALLY Love every dress in this post, Including Natalie… is like “meh, I’m preggo but who cares here are my legs since im feeling em”

Janelle Monae is the light of my eyes! I Heart her and her music and I’m gonna see Hidden Figures with GUSTO!

    Naomie is tailored to Perfection

  20. perplexed says:

Her face looks kind of mature here, which is unusual for her. Those high-def lenses really are powerful.

    • Lacia Can says:

Bad makeup job? It’s like it settled into every fine line and creased there, making the lines look worse than they really are. She normally looks luminous and here she looks a bit pasty.

As for her dress: it boggles my mind that designers can’t make a nice dress for a pregnant woman. I’ve seen very few pregnancy red carpet looks that worked.

      • perplexed says:

Maybe it’s a bad make-up job. Usually I think she looks pretty young and line-less, and close to perfect in terms of her skin.

  21. Alarmjaguar says:

Janelle Monae is amazing in that dress (and generally at life)!

  22. Sage says:

I love Naomi’s dress and her face is perfection!
