Chrissy Teigen: ‘I think some men are scared of feminists’

chrissyteigen
Chrissy Teigen covers the January issue of Elle Australia. I don’t know what she’s promoting exactly but she always has a lot of irons in the fire, she’s usually fighting with someone online (it’s often someone who deserves to be called out, but still) and she’s very… visible I’ll say. I have mixed feelings about her, but I can definitely cosign her thoughts on feminism, which are to-the-point and well explained in her Elle interview. The more she talks like this, the more I can see myself being a fan.

On if she is a feminist: “absolutely”
“It’s about equality, of course, but people see it as being bigger than it is. I think some men are scared of feminists because they think they’re trying to prevail in a way, whereas I’m like, ‘That’s not what equality is.”

“I love having every right to be as outspoken as I am, as any man would be.”

On motherhood:
She ‘didn’t know how tough it would be.’ It’s “all-encompassing.”

Prior to this if you would have told me that Chrissy Teigen was one of those “I’m not a feminist, I just want equality for everyone” idjits I would have believed you. Yet she gets feminism more than Sarah Jessica Parker, Meryl Streep, Mel B and Marion Cotilard combined. We can add Chrissy to the list of enlightened celebrities. (To be fair they already include Jessica Chastain, Maisie Williams, Melissa McCarthy, Rowan Blanchard and more.) Chrissy is educated about the topic and she summed up the problem some factions have with feminism perfectly – they don’t know what it is. However given all that’s happened I would add that many people don’t even value feminism when they do grasp what it means. So many people think that women somehow deserve to be lesser than men. It also serves their interests to mischaracterize feminism, and to muddy the waters about so many things we used to assume were common knowledge.

In terms of Chrissy’s styling, they made her look both beachy and elegant, which is a real feat. She’s lovely and you can see more photos from the shoot on The Daily Mail. Elle has two videos of Chrissy here and here.

We already knew John was and is a big feminist, so this is (happily) not a surprise!

I think over the last few months I have done somewhat of a 160 on Chrissy. I know the term is 180 but I am not 100% sold on her. She can be obnoxious and overbearing at times, but then she says something like this and I am left liking her a little more than I dislike her. So I have just learned to take her in very small doses.

I agree with your comments on the mischaracterization of what feminism is. I have my own issues with the movement (racism and some transphobia found within the community) but I do agree with the basic tenant that woman and men should be treated equally. The fact that some people don’t seem to want to understand that concept is beyond me. It might have to do with the fact that people don’t do their own research and instead rely on other people’s opinions on feminism and stating those opinions as facts. Or, they just don’t believe that women should be treated equally to men.

To your last few sentences: I think C/B made a great point that it serves people’s own interests to muddy the waters or feign ignorance when it comes to the definition of feminism.

I’ve always kind of liked Teigen for some reason.

I’m with you on Chrissy. I do sometimes roll my eyes because she’s pretty attention-grabby, particularly with the messy social media wars, but I also think she’s a badass most of the time. She seems like a great mom, she’s funny, she’s obviously pretty smart/articulate. Her weakness is being kind of a shit-stirrer.

      We all have weaknesses.

    • I Choose Me says:

Make room for me you guys. I feel the same way about Chrissy. Small doses only. But again, they’re no perfect people and I try to keep that in mind when I’m listening to others views. I hope her brand of feminism includes intersectionality but Good on Chrissy for not shying away from the ‘label.’

  3. Hannah says:

I wanna be friends with Chrissy.

  4. Detritus says:

Chrissy is frequently an immature agitator and attention seeker, that said, I sort of like her. She’s smart and passionate, sometimes it seems misdirected but shes interesting at the very least.
Having someone publicly say this is what feminism is and I support it, and get it right, that’s really valuable. Plus, Chrissy’s level and type of exposure means her statements reach people that don’t necessarily search that information out. she’s a hot model and her audience would be younger boys and girls.

  5. naomipaige says:

Good she’s so desperate for attention. Famewh*re much!!!!!

    • ya says:

*pursuing a career in media much?!!!??!!!

i dont get the vitriol, sorry. she’s a model and a media personality. her whole job centers around being/ staying visible.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

2nd nasty comment from naomipaige so I guess…not a big fan of Teigen, not a big fan of feminism, or both!

  6. Tray says:

    SO thirsty.

  7. Ebon says:

She’s a woc and married to john legend – of course she gets intersectional feminism. She looks fantastic on that cover. I want her hair color.

  8. Jaded says:

About 12 years ago I worked with a man who insisted that being a feminist meant that I believed women were better than men, I explained I wasn’t a radical faminist but one who sought equality for women. The term feminist used to be viewed very negatively, I’m glad to see women using it more freely and with pride. We should never be ashamed to strive for equality

    • velourazure says:

Women are better than men. That’s what men are afraid of.

    • Lola says:

My dad is very conservative (fiscally and socially). He recently was bashing feminists and feminism. I told him that I was a feminist. He was taken aback. I asked him what feminism means and before he could answer with his nonsense I told him it meant equality for everyone. He paused for a moment and said “ok, I’m not against that. I’m for that. ” so, basically I think people are misinformed about what feminism is. Also see all of those Hollywood stars who say they aren’t feminists because they think women and men should be equal…

  9. Snowflake says:

I like Chrissy. She’s real, outspoken and smacks back if someone talks s@it to her. I don’t get why people think she’s such a fameho, she’s nowhere near as bad as a Kardashian. And I love baby Luna, she’s so cute. And John legend is such a class act. Love them!

  10. Nicole says:

If you’ve ever regularly taken a glance at her twitter in between her jokes are actual real political commentary backed with facts. Her stance on feminism should surprise no one considering. She’s been woke for a while now. Also John is a proud feminist as well.

  11. Who ARE These People? says:

Just to counteract any nasty comments: I like her. I like that she says she is glad to have the freedom to be outspoken. She can draw the line where she wants – that’s the point.

  12. QQ says:

You don’t say?!?! …Newsbreak.. Water Wets!

  13. isabelle says:

Other Women are also afraid of Feminist. They upset everything, including calling other women to think outside the box and imagine the possibility of a different choices & possibilities, ownership. A lot of women are scared by those choices and possible regrets. Men actually fear them. They should really, think about it, it takes away their stranglehold on power & control.

  14. Otaku Fairy says:

Definitely agree with her about the fear of feminism. She’s been problematic and annoying in the past, but I think for the most part I like her. Don’t mind her thirst. But then again, I’m usually not bothered at all by celeb thirst and see it more as entertainment than a problem.
