Kirstie Alley is crushed that Jenny McCarthy got Oprah talkshow deal, not her

kirstieheader
This week’s National Enquirer claims that Kirstie Alley is upset because she signed a deal with Oprah to do her own talk show last year, but that talks stalled and Kirstie’s plans were on hold. When she heard that Jenny McCarthy got a lucrative deal with Harpo Productions, Kirstie was very upset that she was passed up in favor of McCarthy:

Now Kirstie, whose own Oprah-sponsored talk show stalled, believes that Harpo productions is passing on her project because she’s packed on a huge amount of weight this year – some 83 pounds, according to a source close to Kirstie.

“Kirstie feels like she’s been kicked in the head!” the source confided.

“Last year she signed a deal with Oprah to do her own show. But nothing ever came to fruition and many speculated it was due to her weight gain.

“She thought she’d discuss her future talk show after her most recent appearance on Oprah, but by then Harpo producers were on the bring of announcing Jenny’s new show, which is expected to air before the end of the year.

“Kirstie’s show is still just an idea,” the source said.

“She’s really mad that she didn’t push harder and nag Oprah more, because now she sees Jenny’s show as taking her spot on the Harpo lineup.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, June 1, 2009]

Remember when Kirstie Alley announced in February, 2008 that she wanted to start her own weight loss brand after she was ditched by Jenny Craig? She said “I want to create something new that will help millions of people end the seemingly never ending fatty-roller coaster ride.” She went on to gain even more weight and then she did that mea culpa press tour a month ago with more promises that she would lose the weight and had some great program to reveal afterwards. Usually her weight gain would be no one’s business except that Kirstie keeps bringing it up.

kirstie3 Kirstie signed her deal with Oprah back in March, 2008, and instead of stepping up and becoming a little fitter after that point she kind of “spiraled” – to use a Scientology term – down. She didn’t need to get down a size 6, she just needed to show that she was committed to following through on her promise and getting healthier. So she lost her deal with Oprah. Oprah has faced her own battles with food and should of course understand that life happens and people gain weight. When it’s that much weight after someone hinges their whole public image on losing it, it just makes them look like they can’t follow through.

I feel bad for even covering this issue though and like Oprah Kirstie should be applauded for bringing awareness to something so many people struggle with. It’s possible Oprah just realized that Kirstie was a liability, though, and her weight wasn’t even an issue. Kirstie is a Scientologist who has a lot of strange beliefs that don’t seem to be based on any kind of facts.

OK, Kirstie, I love you my crazy sister, but you know that Jenny is the better bet.

  2. Jag says:

I don’t think it had much to do with her weight; rather, she’s an unpleasant, odd person that many people wouldn’t watch.

  3. Ggirl says:

Kirstie is very funny but yea she is a little inconsistent. I think this is mostly her personality. Hasn’t Oprah had some not so good luck with hiring Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray? There were always rumors surrounding various difficulties with her having to deal with Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray. Maybe she is just ready for a consistent performer. Just sayin’.

  4. Jenny is beautiful, nasty, crazy and dating a big star-Kirstie is just crazy-so of course Jenny will get more viewers!

  5. stewie says:

after reading Alley’s batsh*t crazy rants from Twitter, I’m glad to hear she won’t have a theater in which to perpetuate her crazy.

however, I’m not sure McCarthy would be much better…

  6. guest says:

she should do another season of fat actress. that show was hysterical.

  7. bros says:

who the hell wants to watch this woman? she has no career to speak of, is a failed ex spokesperson for a weightloss brand that cleary hasnt stuck in her case, her face looks like a demon beast face that would haunt my dreams, and she is rather unpleasant, whiny, and only in the press for being a big fat failure. i dont understand why she doesnt just retire herself. why is she still a public figure and why does she feel entitled to a national platform? i do not get these washed up actors and actresses with no discernable skills other than acting (which they arent allowed to do anymore) who refuse to do anything else besides slither around trying to get more gigs to remain relevant and have a platform for people to pay attention to them.

we need to have a pasture for these people. tori spelling and this satan-face and all the rest of these sad has-beens can go there and pay attention to one another and take the pressure off us to have to watch and listen them and their insatiable need for attention. or maybe a technical trade school, with vocational ed. classes to teach them to actually DO something, have a life skill to support themselves instead of this pathetic groping groping groping.

  8. Lita says:

Can you imagine a Kirsty talk show? Someone comes on and says that their sister’s friend got pregnant to their neighbour’s flatmate’s ex-husband (who’d later had a sex change) but who’d been boffing their Mother, and there was some issue with bail money for the half brother, who might really be the father (maury comes on for a guest spot) and then you see Kirsty leaning over foaming at the mouth screaming “WITH EYE DROPS!!!!! IN BABIES’ EYES!!!!!”

  9. Amy says:

She is a frightening beast and it has nothing to do with her weight. Seriously, I’m uneasy looking at these still shots. Can’t imagine a talk show — horror!

  10. stewie says:

    “satan-face”…good one.

    and Lita, that was priceless.

  11. Michelle says:

Oh, Kirstie. It isn’t because of your weight. It isn’t that at all.

It’s that you’re absolutely, 100% Grade-A certified batshit insane. I don’t think the world, let alone television, is ready to harness your specific brand of crazy, yet.

  12. bros says:

stewie, is she not the spitting image of a bloated hell-demon? she freaks me out.

  13. gimmeABreak says:

I watched her last interview with Oprah and could NOT have found her more annoying. She’s funny, but she never stopped playing with her hair! And after every sentence she would follow up with “do you know?”

I could NEVER watch her more than once every 83lbs.

  14. stewie says:

no, bros, you’re right…I just don’t think I’ve ever heard it put so perfectly.

  15. gg says:

    Wonder if she’s still a $cientology adherent?

  16. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

God, I wish she’d stop talking about her weight.

  17. Annie says:

    Yes, she is.

And that’s the thing, I think she’d end up calling psychiatrists onto her show and ripping them new ones.

And then screaming that PPD isn’t real and those who may have symptoms of it, should take vitamins.

I’m glad she’s not going to get more air time. She’s batshit.

  18. stina says:

    you guys are hilarious

  19. BlueSkies says:

    Thank You, Bros

  20. Wresa says:

I would definitely rather watch Jenny. And I think Jenny would pull in younger viewers, which is what advertisers are looking for (and that’$ always the bottom line).

  21. Persistent Cat says:

Both women are insane but Jenny is less insane.

Of course I’ve never watched an episode of Oprah and I definitely wouldn’t watch a talk show featuring either Kirstie or Jenny so whatever.

  22. czarina says:

Frankly, I am tired of talk shows that are just about some pointless celebrity using an hour to focus on themselves and their opinions and making themselves look interesting and funny, usually at the expense of their guest.
Very few of them are any good at hosting (Ellen is the exception…but she isn’t ridiculously self-absorbed nor does she try to make herself look good by mocking her guests or treating them like they should feel priviliged to be on her show.)
Can’t Oprah stop creating more talk shows to torture us with? Why doesn’t she go finance a Broadway play? The world always needs good theater!!

  23. SoCal Saluki says:

Yes, Kirstie was VERY manic on her last Oprah appearance. She does not seem healthy (mentally) enough at this point to carry her own talk show.

  24. Wanda says:

I’m sure it has nothing to do with her weight. Kirstie has a history(dating back to the beginning of her career)of being difficult to work with. It’s only because she is talented and funny that she got this far. Anybody else would’ve been back in Podunk slinging hash by now!

  25. Kristi says:

Oprah probably decided against Kirstie after that bizarre last appearance on her show, when Kirstie could not even put a complete sentence together. She cannot express one coherent thought let alone interviewing any guests on her non-existent new show.

  26. Sandra says:

I think people are being very cruel to Kirstie. It goes to show how biased people are towards others that are overweight. Kirstie has had a wonderful career and was/is very popular. If she was all skinny and cute again, I doubt there would be so many haters. Being over weight destroys ones confidence…so maybe her confidence is down now…maybe talk show isn’t her strength…but acting is…I don’t think Oprah is holding her weight against her, I think she probably just sees this herself. As for Jenny…I’m not a fan and I won’t be watching that show either…

  27. Shelly says:

Kirstie is a loose cannon and a poor risk. She can’t seem to gain control of anything, least of all her weight. If I were going to invest lots of moola in a television program, I sure as hell would not put Kirstie Alley at the helm. And quite frankly, I think most people find her extremely annoying. it has nothing to do with her size or age ( keep in mind that baby boomers STILL comprise the largest veiwing segment AND control the buying power in this country. ) Kirstie simply would not be a good choice.

  28. Merle T Cornpone says:

Sane or not, she has failed to manage her appearence. Appearence is the trump card in entertainment.
If I want to watch blimps, I would hang out where the Good-Year and Met Life blimps land.
She lost out with Jenny Craig because she was still fat and wore those clothes made by Omar, the Tent maker.
I’m 60 years old and weigh the same thing I weighed when I graduated from high school. I haven’t eaten a dessert, fast food, fried food, or more than 8 ounces of meat in a day in 30 years. It’s really that simple, no will power, no results.

  29. linda says:

I think you all are a bunch of loser’s. You are so jealous that you didn’t have a life so you have to bash everyone else’s. Who care if Kristie has gained weight or lost. That does not make the person, I like both of them. Get over your selves you don’t know their lives only what the tabloids let you know. so go read the enquirer or something and leave these women alone. duh

  30. linda says:

So who cares what you have eaten for 30 years maybe you are ugly and you can’t lose that. Live a little you are put here on earth to enjoy life a little. Will power has nothing to do with it. You just had small parents at birth.

  31. Gloria B says:

I feel sorry for all these broads, including Oprah!. They should get together on their own comedy show,
called “Disgruntled Fatties”. Who the hell cares if they’re thin, crazy or fat! Get a freaken life!
