Prince William won’t pay special tribute to his mother while in Paris

BAFTA 2017 - Arrivals

As a gauche American, my belief is that French fashion designers and the French fashion community have impossibly high standards when it comes to how other people dress and present themselves. So what will those French people think of the Duchess of Cambridge during the Cambridges’ two-day visit to Paris two weekends from now? I cannot wait!! I want to take in all of the haughty sniffs and French side-eyes for Kate’s “Marilyn Moments” and doily dresses. I want to hear the French shade for Kate’s wiglet game. I need the translations for Kate’s attempt at high fashion. While the British press has a vested interest in building Kate up as some kind of fashion icon (she is not), the French press couldn’t care less, or at least that’s what I’m hoping. Anyway, People Mag ran a fluff piece about how Kate and William are not going to pay any kind of special tribute to Princess Diana while they are in Paris, but that the expectations are high that Kate will “wow” the French people with her tres chic bum-flashes.

When Prince William and Princess Kate cross the channel for a two-day trip to Paris later this month, there will be no public visit to the places associated with the last days of William’s mother, Princess Diana. Diana died in the city after a car crash almost 20 years ago. And while the late Princess will undoubtedly be on William’s mind over the two days, the visit, which kicks off on March 17, is more about shaking hands and building relationships rather than remembrance. William and Kate will use their so-called “soft” power to help their country’s agenda for the here and now.

The royal couple has been sent to the French capital at the suggestion of the British Foreign Office to cement ties between Britain and France. This comes just as the country is preparing to leave the European Union after last summer’s Brexit vote. They are following the Paris tour with one to Germany and Poland this July with a similar goal in mind.

Though the trip is focused on Britain’s present, the references to Diana are unavoidable. She visited the city in the years before her death, too. When Princess Diana visited Paris in 1994, she lit up Versailles, wowing often hard-to-please French fashion insiders, Eleri Lynn, the curator of the new exhibition Diana: A Fashion Story at Kensington Palace told PEOPLE.

“[She] was really well received,” Lynn says. “The couturier Pierre Cardin was at the event and said ‘We are at Versailles, the home of the Sun King, and now we have the Sun Princess of Versailles.’ Diana was a very proud ambassador of British fashion.”

This month, Kate will no doubt follow in her footsteps and fly the British fashion flag as well. There will be plenty of opportunity to do so, as one of the trip’s key events is a black tie dinner at the British ambassador’s residence.

[From People]

First of all, I do sort of think that William should mark Princess Diana’s death in some way while in Paris. We’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of her death this summer, so maybe there should be an unveiling of some kind of plaque or something? Beyond that… yes, Diana was beloved around the world. And despite Kate’s attempts to Single-White-Female her late mother-in-law, Kate has never captured the same interest or attention as Diana. Plus, William and Kate are so… insular, if that’s the right word. They’re only going to Paris for two days and their two big events involve a reception at the British Embassy (where they’ll likely be surrounded by Brits) and a rugby game. How are they supposed to exhibit their alleged “soft power”?

Speaking of gauche, that picture of her in the red suit is hilarious.

  2. Rapunzel says:

Am I the only one who thinks that there won’t be a tribute because it’s too much work?

And did anyone else hear Rebecca Deacon is leaving them? That can’t be good for Kate’s work ethic and quality.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Just read about that – hmm, something afoot in the Cambridge household. Could be Chuck has instigated a purge of their staff – that he pays for? Please let her stylist and hairdresser be next.

The Cambridge household seems to be a nest of too young/inexperienced people who seem to prefer shagging each other than making their bosses look good. Hopefully they will be replaced with experienced adults. B!tchy I know but considering all the scandals with love triangles, in a normal job those people would likely have been either sacked of disciplined for their unprofessional behaviour.

      • Lorelai says:

I just took it to mean that Rebecca likely wants to start a family as soon as possible after marrying. She’s in her 30s and if she can afford to be a SAHM (if that’s what she wants), good for her.

But knowing W&K, there’s probably more to it.

      • Anitas says:

William seems obsessed with privacy, perhaps they like to change staff often so nobody can be too deep ‘in the know’.

    • notasugarhere says:

She is the latest in a long line of staff who leave W&K, much more quickly than with other royals.

I think marriage is a nifty excuse to get out of a job she doesn’t want anymore. I don’t mean she’s getting married to get out of the job, just that it makes for an excuse W&K can’t fight. I don’t know anyone else in everyday life who quits their job when they get married, not in today’s economy. It will be interesting to see how quickly she gets a new job.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Yes, esp with Private Secretaries who tend to be in the job for many years. TQ has 3 who have been in the job for a long time.

IA, something is very wrong/dysfunctional in that HH and the staff are jumping ship before it implodes. Could be a result of the marriage breaking down or interference from the Middletons – people have been saying for a long time that they have undue influence over the couple and how things are run.

Am sure Deacon will have no issues finding another job – she’ll either end up in another gov dept or at a consultancy.

  3. QQ says:

Of all the things Im gonna dock the Lazies for, this isnt it, None of us owe the public at large our grief like at our mom’s gravesite, public person or not

    • paolanqar says:

Exactly. Plus this is the place where his mother died. I wouldn’t do it either.

    • Sharon Lea says:

      I agree.

    • bluhare says:

      I think so too.

    • minx says:

      I agree, absolutely.

    • Deedee says:

Skipping the Irish Guards? Gets my side-eye. Dressing up a trip to watch a rugby match in France as some sort of diplomacy? Side-eye. Not having a public tribute to Diana while vacationing in Paris? No side-eye.

      • Lorelai says:

KP just released a statement that they WILL be going to the parade before they leave for Paris on St. Patrick’s Day, but I don’t think it says explicitly that she will be handing out the shamrocks? If they merely “make an appearance” to try and compensate for last year but actually do nothing to participate, that would be worse IMO.

    • Sixer says:

      I concur.

    • notasugarhere says:

I agree. While they are all too ready to use Diana as a get out of work and annoy the press card, publicly visiting the site of her death isn’t something they should be required to do. Is there a plaque at the site where Stefanie and Grace had their accident? I hope not. I’d rather they honor Diana through a commitment to hard work and charity enterprises.

    • Anitas says:

Yes. I also think this is a no-win situation for William – he gets slated because he doesn’t pay tribute to Diana, but if he did, you know he’d be accused of trying to get good PR out of the tragedy.

      • Red Snapper says:

Also, where in Paris is he supposed to pay tribute? The accident was in an underpass tunnel, then she died in hospital. And it would be awkward to do or say something about his mom and not mention the two others who died that night. You know, her sleazy boyfriend and the drunk who crashed the car.

      • Cookiejar says:

Not to mention the lack of seatbelts on all but the survivor.

      • Heat says:

I agree 100%. He can’t win. And, truly, we don’t know that he and Harry don’t have something planned in tribute to their mother. Perhaps it’s something private. Or, as something more appropriate, they may chose to honour the anniversary of her passing by doing something for one of her charities.
I think that it would be in poor taste to commemorate the anniversary in Paris for several reasons:
~ They are going to work on building relations with France. Diana’s death was a sore spot for France for several years. They don’t need a reminder.
~ Where would they hold such an event? In the tunnel where she died? Very crass.
~ Wills & Kate would be seen as grand-standers, using taxpayers’ money to make a spectacle of his mother’s death.
        …and the list goes on.

    • Tourmaline says:

I agree, and it is totally understandable if they want to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her death that they don’t want to do so in Paris where she died in a shocking car crash in a tunnel. Maybe if they want to commemorate it publicly they want to do it closer to home in England where they have happy memories of her.

  4. Indiana Joanna says:

    Jacqueline Kennedy she is not.

Just seeing that fly up photo of KM, jeez she really is childish.

  5. Tris says:

Is there not a plaque for Diana in Paris? I’m kind of surprised about that.

    • Lorelai says:

There is something outside the tunnel where she died…a sculpture, maybe? It was years ago that I was there but there is definitely a memorial right near the entrance to the tunnel.

      • Arpeggi says:

The sculpture over the tunnel was there way before the accident. There are still people bringing flowers at stuff, but why would the city or the state want to put something to commemorate her death? Diana has nothing to do with France and she was an ex british royal at the time of her death.

As for Will not wanting to do something to commemorate the event, no shade there. My dad died about 25 years ago when I was 7 and I would be pretty upset if anyone still asked me for public displays of grief. People are allowed to move on.

  6. MunichGirl says:

The rugby game is the reason why Wills wants to Paris.

    • Chrissy says:

I think so too. The Palace is just trying to dress the trip up as something official with the reception at the British Embassy. When all they’ll probably be doing is watching rugby and shopping for more ill-fitting, unflattering clothes. I find the French don’t give a hoot about royals, especially British Royals. I think Kate clothing choices will not impress the French in the least. If anything, this trip will dredge up the Lamebridges’ battle with the press since the trial is coming up. Schadenfreude!

  7. OSTONE says:

It would get so old so quick to be flashing and mooning people left and right, especially a public figure who represents a Kingdom.

  8. Megan says:

Their visit is about the future, not the past. A Diana-themed event is not appropriate.

As for fashion, Kate can take the best pieces in the world and alter and style them to look like they are off-the-rack. I am guessing the Paris fashion world will just ignore her.

  9. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Parisians will rip her a fashion new one, particularly with the french pap case coming up – am sure she’ll show off brand new bespoke dresses for the event that cost more than the trip itself. I wonder if she will flash the french press?!?

We all know he’s only going as it a trip to the ruggers paid for by someone else. They do love their holidays paid for by other people, esp the taxpayers of said country.

They showed face today for an event unveiling a memorial for the fallen troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and she didn’t flash anyone thou it was close with the floaty skirted coat dress she wore. Loved Sophie Wessex’s hat.

PS Theresa May looked like a pale black/grey widow in her outfit. And considering the budget hacks announced yesterday its fitting. Am still fuming about that.

    • Sixer says:

Re, PS – the Theresa laughing gif is giving me life today. She actually looks like her own Spitting Image puppet in it!

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

That GIF was EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING. She does – please bring Spitting Image back. I loved that show.

      • Sixer says:

Last night, Mr Sixer said “OMG she’s an actual vulture”. I said he couldn’t say that on International Women’s Day but he could remind me in the morning. First thing he said to me today – TMay is a VULTURE, Sixer, she’s an actual VULTURE!

I keep sniggering and going back to look at the gif, then sniggering some more!

    • dodgy says:

PS Theresa May looked like a pale black/grey widow in her outfit. And considering the budget hacks announced yesterday its fitting. Am still fuming about that.

Don’t get me started. I work for myself and I’m mad about the budget hikes to my tax returns right now. Not to mention the tax on diesel cars (got a diesel car on the recommendation that it would be good for the environment years ago, and now it’s not, so I think I need to sell it and get another car with a lower tariff).

If Brexit happens, may Scotland and Northern Ireland separate, Gibraltar go to the Spain and just let Britain be torn asunder, tbh. The Tories and Labour don’t give a rat’s ass what happens to us beyond the M25.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Am self employed too, so now i have to pay more NI contributions on top of the VAT increase as well (I go from paying 14.5% to 16.5% for the flat rate scheme from next month).

Scotland can’t financially survive on its own at the moment – the SNP have fkd the economy up and they are doing sod all to get investors. You can’t have an economy built off the tax from whiskey – north sea oil is over, companies are pulling out. An independent Scotland will be another Greece.

      • Sixer says:

I think my NICs will go up by about £350 a year after the Budget.

It’s infuriating because I’m perfectly happy to pay higher taxes for better public services – but this money is going to go on inequality-widening, blast-from-the-past grammar schools and free schools run as vanity projects by the likes of Toby the turd Young. Or to bung Surrey Council cos it’s run by Tories.

So no, not happy with it either. Looking at some of the IFS number-crunching this morning, they note that a) HMG wouldn’t give the OBR any information on Brexit so they openly admit all their forecasting is just guesswork, and b) Hammond has “set aside” £60bn to deal with Brexit but there is no fund from which he has set aside, so in fact, he plans to borrow £60bn to deal with Brexit.

Lions led by donkeys, that’s what we are.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

@Sixer – that whole Surrey council thing makes my blood boil. I used to live in Surrey and its an affluent area – people there can afford to pay more tax.

Like you I don’t mind paying more if it was actually going to areas that helped everyone – NHS, education, social care both at national and local level. But it all goes to Tory pet projects that help people like them.

  10. Sharon Lea says:

With her art background, and his til he switched to geography, wonder if they will go to a museum etc? All I can truly gather is they like sport. Will we see any other side to them on this trip?

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

No. She is Patron of the National Portrait Gallery and the only way they could get her to visit them was to put her Vogue cover on display. Her interest in art extended to getting close to him – she stalked him for years before they started hooking up at St Andrews.

    • Deedee says:

There’s an important rugby match, that IIRC, is part of their itinerary.

    • Sixer says:

Yes, the rugby match is a Six Nations thing (annual competition between England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy). I imagine it’s actually the reason the visit is this weekend.

  11. Trixie says:

Why would they have a plaque in Paris? Why would they do anything in Paris for Diana? If I were William, I wouldn’t want to go to the site of her death on a public engagement either.

    • sam says:

Exactly… and even in the UK her memorials are pretty low-key. Personally I think this is a personal choice for William and his family.

Also, the citizens of Paris may not want to endorse a plaque or memorial (even though she was well received when she visited Paris, I don’t really think that Parisians have a particular attachment to Diana and may have other people they wish to commemorate).

As for the fashion stuff meh – most people on celebitchy don’t seem to like her fashion and that’s fine.

  12. alfaQ says:

They wait until the statue is finished. William and Harry are busy fund raising because they don’t want to pay for Diana’s statue themselves.

    • notasugarhere says:

Has it been announced yet where it will go? If it is in a publicly-accessible part of Kensington Gardens, I can see some members of the public wanting to contribute to it.

If they are raising funds for a statue that they’ll hide away in their “royals only, don’t peek through the new giant yew hedge” section? Then they should be ashamed for making other people pay for it.

      • alfaQ says:

No idea but many people complained that they don’t want to pay for it/they don’t like to spend their own money.

      • notasugarhere says:

I’m sure many have complained. There are die-hard Diana fans out there, however, who would consider it an honor to help pay for it.

  13. Kitty says:

Do people actually think they are serious diplomats?

    • Citresse says:

No and I’m quite sure within most political circles they’re known as lighter than lightweight. And even more depressing: usually the lightweights of the world can provide some interest in their style of dress or the way they present themselves to the general public in interviews, public speeches, writing etc but W&K really don’t have that to offer either.

    • Tourmaline says:

Exactly LOL at “soft power”. Yes very soft, downright flaccid in fact!

  14. Hollz says:

I’m ok with them not paying tribute to Diana – right now. I suspect there will be a tribute later in the year, closer to the actual anniversary. It’s not like Paris is really that far from England.

    • notasugarhere says:

I hope any tribute or statue unveiling happens around her birthday (July 1) rather than the anniversary of her death (Aug 31). Better to celebrate her life and work, not her accidental death.

  15. sara says:

I know people here love royals but they don’t have soft power, they are not important, they dont have influence. You wwant to gossip about royals, but who really think their opinions matters?

    • Kitty says:

Well Sara what about Diana? It seemed to me she had lots of influence and power.

      • sara says:

she had charisma and that was powerful for her! but Willnot and Waity don’t have. Prince Harry have some charisma, but not influence or soft power. I don’t think people care about what they (royals ) say anymore. IDK, I am not british I guess I have to ask what brits feel about the royals.

  16. Citresse says:

I’m wondering if there’s some kind of memorial at the hospital where Diana died? It wouldn’t be right for W&K to visit there if there was…It just isn’t right. The fact William has stated he thinks of his mother every day and the fact they’re visiting Paris is enough.
As for the state of the gravesite of Diana at Althorp, there really hasn’t been an update with regard to the cleaning up/freshening up has there? If Earl Spencer hasn’t addressed that issue we know he has other priorities, in other words more confirmation he’s sub human.

  17. HoustonGrl says:

If you’ve ever lost someone in an accident, there is a deeply painful and complicated aura about the place where they died. I don’t think a 2-day diplomatic visit is the appropriate venue for a tribute worthy of Diana. Not just that, but William would not want to do that publicly.

P.S. for those asking about a plaque, there is a gold flame memorial (statue) at the entrance of the bridge where Diana was killed.

    • Lightpurple says:

The gold flame statue is actually a thank you gift from the US to France for restoration work on the Statue of Liberty. It just happens to be located above where the accident occurred and people have turned it into a makeshift memorial for her.

      • HoustonGrl says:

Ah interesting. I never knew that. I grew up in Paris and everyone called it the Diana memorial.

    • Jaded says:

I’ve been to the tunnel where the accident took place and it is very eerie. There is a bleak sadness about it that is immediately evident.

  18. Starlight says:

The French will be desperate to bring up the boob and bum controversy so Kate will have to be seriously weighting those hemlines to put her exhibitionism to bed. Clearly the media s rant last year on her not attending the Irish Guards hasn’t jolted them into putting that to rest this year with an attendance. Hopefully the Duchess Sophie will step in, wearing a gorgeous green number.

    • Lady D says:

She’s pretty clueless. I can see her letting her skirts fly so to speak. Plus, it will give Wills another chance to bitch about the disrespectful press.

  19. Tough Cookie says:

“Kate will no doubt follow in her footsteps and fly the British fashion flag”

No doubt she will actually fly her skirts up over her head.

  20. Cerys says:

I think William is right not to mark Diana’s death while in Paris. It wouldn’t really serve any purpose as I’m sure he remembers her every day anyway.
As for the trip, I can’t see Waity setting the Paris fashion world alight with an elegant and stylish outfit. The sole purpose of the visit seems to be the rugby match.

  21. A says:

The French say the most when they say nothing at all. And their most profound observations are usually found in the things that they leave unsaid. I’m guessing that the French will likely say nothing about Kate’s fashion whatsoever. Just list her designers, what she’s wearing, refrain from commenting, and let the silence from some of the world’s foremost fashion critics speak for itself.

A few issues though–I really don’t think Kate is all that invested in emulating Diana’s fashion choices or her life, really. I think she wants the same kind of public adoration, preferably without having to do the real emotional work here of connecting with the people. And let’s not forget–Diana was eviscerated for her fashion for a lot of her early years. She may have been a trend-setter, but hardly so early on in her marriage. She learned really quickly though, and got the hang of it and she certainly had a lot more interest in it than Kate. I think Kate expects that as long as she follows a set of steps for altering her clothes, everything she wears will look good on her when that’s hardly the case. That, and also, her taste has really taken a sharp nosedive from when she first became duchess. Everything she wears now looks so stepford wifey and polished, it’s shudder inducing. At least she was interesting in her pre-duchess days.

    • Chrissy says:

In Diana’s defence, the fashions of the Eighties left a lot to be desired. Between the Dynasty shoulder pads and collars, the garish colours and the loud stripes and colour-blocking, it was horrible. Luckily she worked really hard (even while having young kids and a less-than-perfect marriage) and that overshadowed any growing pains she might have had as a young Royal. Kate is a lazy lost cause and yet has no excuses left for her horrendous track record.

  22. Lorelai says:

KP says they will visit the guards on St. Patrick’s Day before leaving for Paris

But is she handing out the shamrocks?? I find the use of the word “visit” to be deliberately vague.

Maybe I’m just reading too much into it!

  23. carolind says:

Couldn’t care less what Kate wears in Paris. She could wear a bin liner for all I care. On the other hand, she and William better be perfection in Poland.

    • Chrissy says:

I pray she doesn’t resort to theme dressing in Poland. So cringeworthy at the best of times never mind at somewhere like Auschwitz.

  24. Ella says:

Am I the only one who is driven BATSH** CRAZY by People’s insistence on referring to her as “Princess Kate?”

  25. Fleur says:

I usually don’t like her ballgown choices–her gowns are usually so matronly, usually squarish high-necked silhouettes which look so blah. I actually really love the ballgown which actually shows her shoulders and a hint of decolletage. It’s fine for a woman’s dress silhouette to be sexy, even a royal woman’s. Diana’s dresses often were. Her dresses shapes don’t have to be square shaped. I like the print of the gown too, very pretty.

For the same reason, I don’t like her habit for matchy-square necked two piece suits like the one above. Blargh. I also don’t know why she insists on being so thin–she is so SO thin. If I thought it was nature, fine, than that would be her shape. But compare to her figure in her early 20s I feel like this extreme thinness is just discipline, not mother nature.

  26. Kaz says:

So a fashionable couple of days coming up for Kate in Paris? That’ll be jeggings at the rugby and a short flippy skirt elsewhere?
