Tom Hiddleston tried to sing in Spanish on ‘Kimmel Live’: cringey or fine?

Tom Hiddleston seen arriving at the ABC studios

Tom Hiddleston appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night as the main guest, which means he got a few big segments. These are photos of Tom outside Kimmel’s studio, and I have to say: he looks really nice in this suit. He looks like a hot undertaker, or the mourner at a funeral that you would grief-bang. Anyway, the Kimmel interview… if you make it past the first clip, he’s somewhat charming. The problem is the rehearsed bit at the beginning where Tom explains why he was wearing a sombrero at the Mexican premiere of Kong: Skull Island, and then he breaks into song because Tom will never NOT make me cringe.

So bloody awkward. My God. In this next clip, Tom talks about his boarding school and the different kinds of pranks and games boys played while left to their own devices.

Tom talks about his wax figure, learning how to surf in Hawaii, how he’s a very safe Go-Kart driver.

Ugh, what else? Let’s see… did you know that Tom will likely come back to his Golden-Globe-winning role in The Night Manager? Even though the miniseries was based on John Le Carre’s book and Le Carre never wrote a follow-up, it seems like the BBC and AMC are eager to make a second miniseries, with or without Le Carre’s permission. I don’t really hate the idea of Tom making another miniseries based on these characters, but for the next series, let’s not make him beat a very short man to death on a hill, okay? Was that a spoiler? Whatever. That scene bugged me because Tom had a good 11 inches over that dude and yet we were supposed to buy that it was an even fight.

While watching that last night, I thought: “he is doing this for Sixer to escape from Coventry!” Although Kimmel sketches and stunts often border on the cringeworthy, no matter who is involved, and this wasn’t bad by that standard. He was being a good sport.

That suit was lovely. Maximum LEGS

    • SusanneToo says:

Agree. It was fine. He was fine. And looked very nice.

    • Grace says:

Honest question: has he ever looked bad in suits? I don’t recall a lot of times. Well-made, well-fitted suits are his thing.

    • slowsnow says:

It was Kimmel who made me cringe so hard. I have no idea why he or Fallon have a job.

LEGS… Oh what not to say about this? He is so not fit for an action role. And before you start saying it’s all about the monkey, that snooker scene is so unconvincing, and the “safety first” comment which was not, by any stretch of the imagination, ironic… He does not have that range as, say, Gyllenhaall does.

I have to watch High Rise and come back to you on his range, but I loved him as the cerebral Loki and the cynical vampire but absolutely not as the alpha male. Does. Not. Work.

      • Nanny to the Rescue says:

I agree here. I like him and I think he’s a great actor but he isn’t convincing in actiony, “alpha male” roles.

Disclaimer: I somewhat dislike the term alpha male for humans. It reminds me of mens rights activists and their constant whining. And by their standards, I find beta males much more attractive.

      • Arachnid (temp name) says:

He looks better fighting on stage, as in Coriolanus and Henry IV Part 1 and Henry V

      • Arachnid (temp name) says:

Except the last two weren’t on stage, doh, Must have meant Shakespeare.

    • Sixer says:

LOL. Sorry though: still in Coventry.

      • Lightpurple says:

        Of course! But he’s trying!

      • slowsnow says:

He did try @Sixer! Even his boarding school comments were safe – albeit a bit zzzzz.

      • Sixer says:

        If you guys say so.

NOT watching video! Also: have rhubarb. My priorities are straight, right?

      • Lightpurple says:

Rhubarb is an important priority. Go for it.

      • Spiderpig says:

Sixer, I am being sent to Coventry in a couple of months! (To work at the Belgrade.) Can you recommend any Coventry must-sees?

      • spidey says:

@Spiderpig, You will be near enough to visit Stratford upon Avon, but being a theatre person I am sure you know that! 🙂

      • Sixer says:

Spiderpig – I’m not in the Real Life Coventry! LEGS has been sent to the idiomatic Coventry by me.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yep. I really wanted to hate on him but he was a good sport and he looked elegant and masculine. Punching myself in the face for saying that.

    • Amy says:

Ditto! I’m a harsh judge, but thought this was sweet and unforced.

  2. ell says:

he reminds me of a bird.

  3. Grace says:

He now has a wax figure?

    • Lightpurple says:

Yes. In both London and New York at Madame Tussad’s. Him as his Conrad character with Kong.

    • Nanny to the Rescue says:

Google it. It’s … not good. Looks right around the eyes but the rest is not like his face at all.
Amsterdam apparently has a Loki wax figure. Now that one is spot on.

  4. Ayra. says:

He does look good in that suit. I got second hand embarrassment from the singing.

  5. OSTONE says:

To his defense, his Spanish accent is not bad. And Guillermo totally made up the lyrics because that is not cielito lindo haha! He does look good in that suit!

  6. Celest says:

In that final video, when he says “the most emasculating and humiliating thing is paddling in the water….”, I was sure he was leading up to that I heart TS vest. Too bad, it would have made that interview less of a snooze fest.

  7. ZZZ says:

I don’t find it cringeworthy at all, if only he could finish the song.

  8. Lolo86lf says:

I have no problem with Tom, he is charming, attractive, good actor, down-to-earth and he sure looks good in that black suit. If anything he is too eager to please everybody, he should in a nice way tell his haters to f**k off and then he will get more respect.

  9. seesittellsit says:

    I can’t even.

Tommy, do you have any, like, serious dramatic roles coming up in a serious film? Like, any? Please, listen to Mama: that’s what you really do well. You need a classy suspense film like, oh, “Dead Again”, or a drama about a marriage falling apart, or a serious crime/detective film playing the lonely tortured private detective . . . OK, ISTL was a shot, it’s not your fault the director totes blew it.

Can you just stop with the movie star shite and go back to being an actor?

    • Cleudo says:

He is promoting a movie at the moment.

    • Beth says:

This is part of his job. Movie stars/actors have to do interviews and get people interested while he promotes a new movie

      • seesittellsit says:

I know he’s promoting a movie. He’s promoting a silly movie. My point is that he keeps looking silly while promoting silly movies. And every time he does, he erodes his identity as a serious actor.

  10. shelley* says:

    Hottest suit yet….Love it.

    • virginfangirl2 says:

The fit of that suit looked so perfect. He looked better than ever, if that’s even possible

  11. QQ says:

I have no words for the inner heat cringe im going through Couldnt even finish watching the First clip TBH there are levels to this Let me find the brown guy and trot him out for the bit… Cielito Lindo is NOT an Unknown Mexican song, I know this cause I’m Venezuelan and I grew up on this from my Parents and their parents, The fact that Guillermo wouldnt sit there and booboo the fool with This Pasty Praying Mantis GIVES ME LIFE!! • third ginger says:

I’m dying!!! As our president Truman once said,” We’ll put you down as undecided.”

      • QQ says:

That is what you wont do on today third ginger.. do PLEASE firmly put my ass in the NO COUNTRY FOR THIS LONG SUFFERING, CORNY, PEDANTIC, PRECIOUS JACK SKELLINGTON Looking ass Dude, I’m gonna stop bothering with these mediocre floppy types

      • third ginger says:

Sorry. that was an old joke. Truman was once asking for votes and was told off in hilarious terms by a voter. That was his response. I meant it as a lighthearted compliment.

      • QQ says:

I know, I got It, I just Promise you Is a No for me LOL ( Or Guillermo, Guillermo is the Unsung Hero of this piece Oh My God!)

      • Arachnid (temp name) says:

Or as we say it in the UK “I take it that’s a NO”

    • I Choose Me says:

I’m completely the opposite of you when it comes to my feelings/opinion on one Tom Hiddleston but your rant gave me a good laugh all the same.

    • Sixer says:

Do pasty praying mantises get eaten by their post-coital mates less often than the non-pasty ones? Asking for a friend.

    • Arachnid (temp name) says:

      And breathe 😆

Sometimes you have to blame the interviewer.

    • Aoife says:

Pasty and corpsey – erm, am not from the US so am really wondering, is it accepted to refer to white people by the color of their skin like this there?

      • DahliaDee says:

As someone from a predominantly white country (as in 99.9%), I can tell you that while these may be slightly insulting comments, they are not in any way, shape, or form racial insults. Please, everyone let go of the false notion that white people experience racial discrimination to the extent that POC do to this day, and let’s move on. Race discrimination is systematic.

  12. Adrien says:

Hey Tom, when speaking another language please use your own accent. It is allowed, trust me. I don’t know about the Latinos but as an Asian, I don’t find it endearing when foreigners speak to us in Mandarin yet sound like a silly character from drunken master movies. People do assimilate accents especially when they lived in a place for a long period but Tom sounded like he watched too many telenovelas and practiced that sh1t in front of the mirror.
Idk, maybe it’s because it was Tom, he is bound to make me cringe. If this was Dev Patel or Idris, I would probably say “nailed the Spanish accent, sounds like a local”.

    • theHord says:

Tom worked for a short while in Spain, in a play.

      • Ennie says:

own accent? I don’t know when I started speaking English fluently, I was using a Northern California accent, because mms sis in law lived there and I learned from her.
Now my regular accent is different. I guess people use/absorb accents differently, particularly when speaking a different language. I LOVED when one of my trainers in ESL spoke in her very nice British accent, as she went to uni at Essex.

      • arachnid says:

In everyday life (a opposed to acting a part!) the main thing is that people can understand what you are saying.

      • arachnid says:

In everyday life (a opposed to acting a part!) the main thing is that people can understand what you are saying.

  13. OTHER RENEE says:

Nope, still can’t unsee those ridiculous underwear photos even when he’s wearing a suit.

  14. Alondra says:

He has a really wierd smile, like he has dentures something. He looks really good in his suit though!
(Please don’t get mad at me, get mad at the person who keeps putting those odd smiling pictures as thumbnails, she’s trying to say something, without actually saying it..lol)

    • bubbamagnet says:

I’m with you on the pix of grinning Hiddleston (Grin-leston?) the stills of the grimace alone make me cringe–I don’t even have to click on the video.

    • Wendy M says:

Agreed. There’s something so forced, so unauthentic about that wide, almost crazed smile. Very odd.

  15. I Choose Me says:

Why am I getting MIB vibes from this suit look? Wonder if it’s the shades.

  16. milibili says:

he looks like a hot but cynical FBI agent.

  17. third ginger says:

Would anyone like to talk a little business? Kong did a good 3.7 million in previews. That’s ok, but not spectacular. It appears that LEGENDARY miscalculated the popularity of LOGAN. The studio felt SI would have the young adult audience largely to itself before the bulldozer known as BEAUTY AND THE BEAST appears [March 17]. LOGAN,although rated R, has been a smash hit and could actually repeat at No. I.

I know some people find this tedious, but I love show business.

    • TotallyBiased says:

Well, Logan only did 1.8 mil in previews, so not sure how that shows Kong off to a lesser start. I’m more concerned by the low opening weekend predictions–at least for a tentpole.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

      • third ginger says:

Sorry, I meant Thursday night showings 3.7 LOGAN did 9 million. I was unclear. Then LOGAN did 33 million dollars last Friday. I am off this afternoon to see SI and hope it does well. It is, however, hard to beat a tested MARVEL product.

      • third ginger says:

Once again, my apologies. Are we both talking US box office or UK?

      • Ann says:

It knocked Logan out of the top spot, estimates are $53 million for Skull Island.

However, I wouldn’t celebrate yet. SI cost a hefty $190 million to make. Double that for P&A and it’s got a price tag of $380 million. Ideally, when you spend that much, you want to see $75+ on opening weekend domestic (the studio % is higher in the US than overseas). If Legendary can leverage hype, it may be fine. It will be considered a bomb if it doesn’t hit at least $380-$400 million though.

On the other hand, Logan cost $97 million and is at $305 million total atm, so it’s already turning a profit.

  18. Saks says:

I don’t know what Guillermo is singing but that is certainly not Cielito Lindo! 😂
That song is pretty much like an anthem for us Mexicans. The chorus is the most known part of the song:
“Ay, ay, ay, ay, canta y no llores, por que cantando se alegran cielito lindo los corazones”
(Rough translation: “Sing and don’t cry, because singing makes the heart happy, pretty little sky”).
In Tom’s defense about the sombrero, we usually shower our foreign visits with things like that, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone had given him a luchador’s mask or stuff like that.

  19. omg says:

he was just being a good sport. It wasnt that bad.

    • Whatdoessheknow says:

Ikr? From where I sat he didn’t ask for any of that. Looked like he was put on the spot.

    • justme says:

Everything he does has to be described as either a “cringeworthy” or “thirsty” – that’s a requirement. He looked very handsome and dapper and seemed very chipper. Japan will be next on his travels and possibly China apparently.

  20. spidey says:

Hope it does well at the Box Office for Tom’s sake and also the shut up the doom mongers.

    • MI6 says:

Spidey, it’s beating Logan at $53M so far 😊😊
I just saw it and had the BEST time. Tom hits all the right notes and his pecs deserve a credit all their own. I’m proud of him. I was expecting some cringe but there was none to be found.
Go!! It’s so much fun. JVR is a bit of a do*che but the man can direct and block a scene!!

      • spidey says:

So glad you enjoyed it MI6 and that is good news about the Box Office – weren’t the predictions for $40/50m for the weekend?

Did you see the giant King Kong went up in flames at the Saigon premiere?

      • MI6 says:

“…the scientists ship out, accompanied by Mason, a no-nonsense war photographer who’s soon trading barbs and looks with the world’s prettiest mercenary, James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston).”
        The NY Times review
        😍😍

Now I’ve got to look, Spidey!! Haven’t seen that yet.

      • spidey says:

        Check the BBC entertainment website.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-39235811

      • third ginger says:

Just back from SKULL ISLAND, not literally,of course. Lots of fun!! John C. Reilly steals the movie. Tom and Brie look like a million bucks. Skull Crawlers are worth the price of admission. It is far better than the most recent GODZILLA.

I don’t get the “cringe” element either. I take Hiddleston as an old fashioned British hero, not a contemporary action hero. Several critics made this same point. I know it’s all in the eye of the beholder.

  21. milibili says:

wiki showing already earning 92 mill $. Nice!

  22. spidey says:

    Is that reliable?

    • MI6 says:

I hope so – not bad for a movie with virtually no plot. It’s like a Rollercoaster ride or a bucket of popcorn. Imminently forgettable but so good while it’s happening.

      • third ginger says:

Does that include overseas grosses? Here, the prediction is 53 million domestic. An analysis from Ann above is exactly what I have been reading in the trade papers. Also, as I noted earlier, LOGAN, while not staying number one, is taking a much bigger share of the box office than LEGENDARY anticipated. Everyone here knows my fondness for Hiddleston, but this is hardcore dollars and cents.

      • third ginger says:

        I agree!

  23. third ginger says:

Obviously, I agree with MI6 and the description of SI.

  24. spidey says:

As you may have guessed, I am having a few difficulties posting. I seem to have gone invisible at times.

  25. Lana 234 says:

Great fitting suit as usual on Tom but I hate that it’s black and white. He looks like an extra from men in black.

  26. milibili says:

Kong is the king now, at no 1 😀

  27. milibili says:

    1.) Kong: Skull Island (20th/Leg), 3,846
    theaters / $20.2M Fri. (includes $3.7M in
    previews) /$24M Sat/$16.7M Sun/ 3-
    day: $61M / Wk 1

    2.) Logan (Fox), 4,071 theaters (0)/ $10.4M
    Fri. (-68%) /$16.4M Sat/$11.1M Sun/ 3-
    day: $37.9M (-57%)/Total: $152.7M / Wk 2

ok, first of all notice the number of opening theaters, then opening $. I say kong is doing pretty good.

  28. spidey says:

Good news about the box office . There is an interesting article about Tom in the Sunday Telegraph today. Can’t put a link up because it is premium but someone has made a nice comment about when he was playing Cassio at the Donmar.

  29. Lightpurple says:

Cringey. He needs to spend time with Taylor to work on his singing.
