Ed Sheeran will have a cameo in the new season of ‘Game of Thrones’

Che tempo che fa

Ed Sheeran is not content to be the James Taylor to Taylor Swift’s Carole King. No, Ed Sheeran also takes roles/cameos in television and film projects. He turned up in Bridget Jones’s Baby. He had a cameo in Undateable. He had a recurring role in The Bastard Executioner. I have no idea if Ed really wants a career as an actor, or if he’s just doing this stuff for fun. Whatever it is, his acting career is probably going to the next level. He’s got a cameo in the new season of Game of Thrones. Hm.

Though Game of Thrones has a rich history of musical guest stars, usually, those performers fly a little bit under the radar. But this season, creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff landed someone a bit more starry. British megastar Ed Sheeran will appear in Season 7—and at a South by Southwest panel on Sunday, the showrunners explained the very personal reason why.

In a conversation moderated by stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, Benioff said they had tried for years to land Sheeran as a surprise for Williams, who is a huge fan. This is the year they finally made it happen. Past Game of Thrones musical cameos have included members of Coldplay, Mastodon, Of Monsters and Men, and Sigur Rós. There’s no confirmation if Sheeran will be singing or performing (like Sigur Rós and Of Monsters and Men did)—nor even if he’ll be recognizably himself when he appears on-screen. (Members of Mastadon played unrecognizably zombified Wildlings.)

In announcing who would be writing the scripts for Season 8, Weiss and Benioff also confirmed that the show’s upcoming final season will be even shorter than its already shortened penultimate season: a mere six episodes.

[From Vanity Fair]

I’ll admit that I didn’t even realize that Sigur Rós and Of Monsters and Men had performed on the show. I remember that there’s been music performed in some scenes, but it honestly never occurred to me that producers had hired actual well-known musicians to perform. Now that I know that, it makes me hopeful that they’ll properly disguise Ed or maybe even make him an ice-zombie. Because it will totally take me out of the show if Ed pops up halfway through an episode to perform “Shape Of You” while the Khaleesi’s eyes fall on Jon Snow. Oh, if Ed Sheeran plays the character who finally finds GENDRY, I will be very happy.

Also: someone needs to introduce Maisie Williams to some better music. *tosses some old Pixies CDs at Maisie*

Whoever he plays- I just hope he dies quickly. There is absolutely nothing good about that dude.

  2. AreYouForReal? says:

    I didn’t realize they had hobbits in GoT… :-/

  3. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

You have got to be kidding me – its going to make him even more unbearable. He went on and on for months about the Hobbit franchise.

I don’t know what it is about him but he annoys the fk out of me.

  4. ell says:

they also had a bunch of guys from coldplay and snow patrol. they do it every season, and they usually have the musicians sing or play music anyway i.e. not an actual character with lines.

I can’t believe they pushed the date again up to 16/7.
July is such a hot month here to handle dragons!
    I can’t wait that long!

I think Sigur Ros played at Joffrey’s wedding to Margaery. Coldplay members were in the band at the Red Wedding.

Is this a friggin joke?! Why?! WHY?! WHAT purpose does this serve?!-

  8. Adrien says:

Wilko Johnson of blues band Dr. Feelgood played a character but he wasn’t a musician in the series. He played the mute executioner.
As for Ed doing a lot of cameos, why has Guillermo del Toro not cast him yet? No need for makeup and prosthetics. I love to make fun of his appearance but I will always have a spot for him. He is a Yorkshireman. His songs’ lyrics are corny and trite but he is a skilled pop melodist and instrumentalist. One can still enjoy someone’s music even if you find the lyrics banal. He is the inoffensive John Mayer – Talented musically but a little MOR.

    I don’t care about this.

I do care that next season is only 6 episodes long. ::sobs::

Poor guy, he is very unfortunate looking.

I cannot escape this guy. My oldest plays his new album over and over at top volume. At this point the mere mention of his name makes me stabby.

  12. TyrantDestroyed says:

Maybe he is the Justin Timberlake of this generation and wants to do it all

Ed Sheeran has never been on my radar, and I am not at all a fan of his music… but last night I watched the music video for his latest single and I loved it! His love interest in the music video is a black woman who is a total badass, a very capable boxer/martial artist (?) that he struggles to keep up with.

I know it’s silly, but I was just so happy to see a minority play the love interest, even more so given that she has a deep skin tone. Representation really matters- or at least, it mattered to me. I had the biggest smile on my face watching the mv, so kudos to Ed Sheeran.

Do you guys remember that princess Beatrice knighting James Blunt and accidentally cutting Ed’s face story? James Blunt came out and said Ed made the whole story up.
