Scarlett Johansson in Azzedine Alaïa at Paris premiere: cute or unflattering?

'Ghost In The Shell' Paris Premiere

Noted Asian actress Scarlett Johansson premiered her new film, Ghost in the Shell, in Paris last night, and these are some photos from the premiere. ScarJo is playing a Japanese robot in the movie adapted from the Japanese manga series, but don’t worry, it’s fine, they changed the character’s name to “Major” as opposed to the original name “Major Motoko Kusanagi.”

Scarlett wore Azzedine Alaïa to the Paris premiere – she actually used two pieces from two different runway looks to make this outfit – you can see the two runway looks here. I kind of think she should have kept the “chevron striped” ensemble together and it would have been a much stronger look. The feather skirt looks like a fluffy bathmat in some of these photos, I’m just sayin’.

Meanwhile, ScarJo had an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday. It was actually conducted just days before her divorce filing from Romain, which is when their custody battle really began. You can read the Mail piece here. Some of the quotes are interesting, especially this one about how – as a twin – she’s never really been alone in her life:

‘I’ve realised in the past couple of years that I have never actually been alone. I have always been with somebody. And in those first moments of life, even just the spark of it, having somebody else there must affect one, right? Because of that, I’m learning now how to be alone just with myself. But it’s challenging. It doesn’t mean that I don’t feel alone at times or lonely, but I’m realising that I’ve always had this other half out there.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I’ve never really thought of Scarlett as one of those “I can never be alone” women, like Jennifer Lopez. Scarlett always seemed less needy, like she enjoyed the company of men but didn’t NEED to always have a man. Although I’ve been wondering for a while if Scarlett and Romain are over because Scarlett has a jumpoff. Incidentally, did you know that her Ghost in the Shell director is Rupert Sanders, the same guy who destroyed his marriage by having an affair with Kristen Stewart? Huh.

You’re so right Kaiser, the top half of the dress looks SO much better “whole” than this version. That version is sleek and sexy.

  2. Sullivan says:

Not a good look. At all.

  3. Neverwintersand says:

I kinda like this! What bugs me though, are the really thin black tights, i find them really unflattering on everybody.

    • Nancy says:

I like it too. Tights would have worked with the boots, but I think she tried to dress it up with the more sheer tights??!! Don’t usually like short hair, but she rocks it. I give her a B+

  4. Lucy says:

Now that you’ve mentioned she’s a twin, can I take a moment to talk about her brother? He’s HOT.

    • tegteg says:

I had no clue she was a twin! I looked up her brother and you’re right, he’s cute!

  5. detritus says:

Who’s the lady in the lovely crushed blue velvet? I want her dress. ScarJos look is not good.

  6. Sam says:

So happy for Scarjo! She’s finally bringing representation to Asian Americans on the big screen. What a time to be alive you guys!

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Don’t forget Asian oscar winner Emma Stone, so much diversity!

      • Sam says:

The Oscars this year were so diverse. Two POC won supporting actor/actress, an Asian won best actress and a caveman won best actor.

Then we got Asian Matt Damon and Asian Scarjo to star in huge blockbuster films. Progress is being made you guys. Yay!

  7. Aysla says:

The dress seems… too young for her? Edgy Disney/Nickolodeon star? Like the kind of thing a teenage starlet might wear– ala Hailee Steinfeld back in the day. Just doesn’t look right on Scarlett.

    • Pandy says:

Yeah that’s what I thought too. It looks too young somehow even though she’s not that old. I think it’s her hair? It’s an old ‘do imho.

  8. rahrahrooey says:

    “Noted Asian actress.” Dead. lmaooooooooooooooooooo

  9. Heather says:

The top half of that dress is cute.

  10. minx says:

Yeah, the two halves don’t match.

  11. L says:

Like the top half only. SJ you can do better girl. 💜💜💜

  12. Margo S. says:

Hollywood is so stupid. Casting scarjo and emma stone as Asians. So dumb.

  13. Chem says:

She’s kinda short for the outfit

  14. bonniegirl says:

She looks great and different. Her hair is fab.

  15. teacakes says:

Her hair is growing on me.

No idea how the film is tracking though, she’s lucky she has the Avengers to go back to after this.

Attention: This information might contain some spoilers! So do not read any further if you want to watch the movie. I want to share some thoughts about the whitewashing debate on the foundation of the original manga…

I have read the original manga and I have also seen the animes. Major Motoko Kusanagis ghost/soul/mind is at least one half Japanese. In the manga it is stated that her mother is Japanese. When Kusanagi died, her ghost was put in a shell. And this shell looked different than her original body. In fact, Kusanagi had different shells throughout her life and she can be even male if she wants to. Kusanagi is described to have grey/blueish eyes, dark hair and white skin. At this point she is either Japanese with coloured eyes or Caucasian. But in fact robots have no race like human beings; they are neutral. If Major Kusanagi would have a race, it would be cyborg.

    Cute AF.

  18. enora says:

    Oui….this dress is…une horreur !

  19. seesittellsit says:

Jesus, with a figure like that, she goes out in an outfit like that. The Fashion Furies should descend upon her for misusing Fate’s gifts. For heaven’s sake, give that body to someone who knows how to dress it!

  20. Minty says:

I really don’t think she’s wearing thin sheer black tights, I just think her legs are not tanned and they have a grey complexion in comparison to the rest of her skin.

The reason she most likely mixed these two looks is because the black and white one would have required an alteration to shorten the skirt or it would stop passed her knees. Most likely it was a time issue or the bottom fringe was too elaborate to hem.

The fur skirt actually looks good on the model because it’s really short and sticks out more at the sides. It just looks way too big on Scarjo, almost like a costume.

  21. smee says:

Too many shades of black. Too many little prints on parts of it. Too too busy. While I like the skirt, I don’t like it on her.

Gawd, I hope she isn’t involved with that Rupert creep…….
