Rep. Devin Nunes ‘temporarily’ stepping down from Intelligence Committee

While I haven’t been writing about the Devin Nunes situation that much, I’ve been following it with interest. Since I don’t want to do 20 million links, here’s my summary: Representative Nunes, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, forced himself into the spotlight several weeks ago. He was called to the White House by mysterious figures and given classified material which he claimed “proved” that Emperor Bigly was telling the truth when Bigly claimed (on Twitter) that Pres. Obama “wiretapped” him. When Nunes was called out by members of his own committee, he spent weeks trying to explain himself. He also got caught in some weird lies, and he claimed that he would never reveal his sources for the classified material.

The whole situation absolutely looked like this: Bigly called up Nunes and Bigly’s people cherrypicked some classified information which Nunes then willfully misrepresented as a way to justify Trump’s tweets. From this Nunes debacle, we’re also now talking about poor Susan Rice, who was Obama’s NSA and might have authorized some completely legal “demasking” involving Trump and his team. Throughout it all, Nunes is the one who seems to be hiding sh-t – along with Bigly – and he seems to be the one furtively engaged in illegal and unethical activities.

Well, funny story. The House Ethics Committee is now investigating Devin Nunes for disclosing classified material. And Rep. Nunes has just stepped down from the Intelligence Committee.

House intelligence chairman Devin Nunes announced Thursday he was temporarily stepping aside from leading the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 elections. Nunes cited a series of ethics complaints filed against him alleging that he violated terms of discussing classified material following his clandestine meeting at the White House just over two weeks ago.

“I believe it is in the best interests of the House Intelligence Committee and the Congress for me to have Representative Mike Conaway, with assistance from Representatives Trey Gowdy and Tom Rooney, temporarily take charge of the Committee’s Russia investigation while the House Ethics Committee looks into this matter,” Nunes, a California Republican, said in a statement. He added, “I will continue to fulfill all my other responsibilities as Committee Chairman, and I am requesting to speak to the Ethics Committee at the earliest possible opportunity in order to expedite the dismissal of these false claims.”

[From CNN]

Again, I’m wary of arriving early to the #TrumpImpeachmentParty but I do think this is a good sign. This is a sign that House Democrats are applying pressure where and how they need to. I also think this is the last gasp of Republicans trying to look like they are impartially investigating Emperor Bigly. The next step – even with Nunes’ recusal – is for an independent commission to be paneled.

    Hmm.

This “hoax” story sure is taking a lot of people down…

  2. Neelyo says:

I’m not relieved to see Trey Gowdy come slithering back.

    • DavidBowie says:

      Me either

    • Megan says:

Maybe he will apply the same fervor to this investigation as he did Benghazi.

I’m kidding. He is a complete tool for Trump.

      • lizzie says:

        he’s a complete tool….period.

      • Tiffany :) says:

These crazy times have warped my sense of humor. I found your comment to be so funny. The same intensity as Benghazi investigation, LOL!

    • Giddy says:

Gowdy The Conehead will somehow manage to bring up Benghazi constantly.

      • jetlagged says:

Why do you think Susan Rice is getting dragged into this all of a sudden? The Republicans need a credible villain. To all the wingnuts that are sitting at home watching Fox News she is familiar as part of the Benghazi witch hunt so it makes perfect sense she’d be neck deep in whatever new left-wing conspiracy they are trying to conjure out of thin air.

I swear if these morons weren’t actually running the country (into the ground apparently) this would be laughable.

  3. PunkyMomma says:

“And another one bites the dust . . . ”

    *puts champagne on ice*

    • KWM says:

Don’t get too excited, he is not stepping down from the committee he is excusing himself from only the Russian investigation. He will still be on the committee and will be in charge of anything not Russia.

  4. Melly says:

    It’s about f’ing time!

  5. NotSoSocialButterfy says:

Holy moly, the shit really is flowing downhill. “Temporarily,” my foot.
This whole tRump-Russia thing is metastasizing faster than a glioblastoma multiform.

  6. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

So one dumbass is going to be replaced by three other dumbasses. Why isn’t Adam Schiff taking over? The only one I truly recognize is Trey Gowdy and I know he is a functioning idiot.

This is beyond ridiculous at this point. How can someone who is going out in disgrace like Nunes is name three other people to take his place? Why don’t the Rethuglicans realize that dragging their feet on the investigation is only making them look more complicit and treasonous? If there was nothing to show, why not let the investigation go unimpeded.

    • cr says:

Adam Schiff can’t take over, the Dems are not the majority party in either the House or the Senate.

    • doofus says:

“If there was nothing to show, why not let the investigation go unimpeded.”

yeah, this is what I don’t understand. if there was nothing there, they’d welcome the investigation to exonerate them. if they stonewall it, it makes them look like they have something to hide.

  7. Onemoretime says:

Baby fist and his goons are making a mockery of this country! Make America Great my fanny! Just goes to show how American was never great if this is the “low” bar of greatness.

  8. Shambles says:

I just saw this CNN alert and a loud HA! resounded from my throat. I won’t read too much into it just yet, but Devin Nunes is such a slimy, spineless little shit that his downfall simply makes me happy.

Impressed with your breaking news coverage, Kaiser! (Sorry, I said CB originally to reference the general site)

  9. third ginger says:

Ding dong! Trump’s bitch is dead!

  10. evie says:

He’s still on the committee, just recused himself from this investigation. That said, thank goodness! I don’t have high hopes for the outcome of the ethics review but at least it got him off this investigation.

    • Kitten says:

I hate how every little piece of good news comes with a spoonful or two of bad news. I’m so jaded at this point that it’s hard to be hopeful about anything.

Great that Nunes isn’t part of the investigation but in an alternate reality–one where Republicans had any sense of morality and ethical duty–Nunes would have resigned. Sessions would have resigned. O’Reilly would be fired. Roger Stone would be shunned by society. And most importantly, Trump would have never become president.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Wow, your last paragraph was some harsh reality. We’ve fallen so far from our ideals. Congress plays such an important role in checks and balances, and they are completely failing in their responsibility.

I just want Sally Yates to testify. I have a kind of irrational fear for her safety until she goes on record and shares what she knows.

      • Kitten says:

        I worry about Yates too.

And I no longer recognize my country.

      • Juls says:

“I hate how every little piece of good news comes with a spoonful or two of bad news. I’m so jaded at this point that it’s hard to be hopeful about anything.”

I feel the same, OKitt. It’s like bizzaro world, or a Fringe alternate universe. I weep for humanity. And the planet.

  11. Rapunzel says:

Devin Nunes is an embarrassment to the great state of California. George Takei had an April Fool’s joke, that he was going to run against Nunes, and I wish he really was.

    • HappyMom says:

I was so irked with George Takei. He put that out on March 31st-not April 1st. And I really had my hopes up. My sense of humor is precarious as it relates to anything in TrumpLand.

  12. Turtle says:

I almost — ALMOST — feel bad for Nunes. The poor sap, called to the White House, thinking it was a secret, special meeting just for him (it wasn’t), given cherrypicked intel that he no doubt expected would exonerate Bigly and make Nunes a hero, carried around on the shoulders of Fox News anchors, and, instead, wah, wah, waaaahhh….

  13. Eric says:

Look for McMasters to can Cohen-Watnick next.

  14. minx says:

    Weasel.

  15. mee says:

About time – let the dumbinos keep falling.

  16. Lightpurple says:

Meanwhile, Ryan is blaming others for filling ethics complaints on Nunes, says Nunes has integrity and his complete trust, and will be exonerated by Ethics, and hey, while you’re looking over there, I’m planning to file a bill to amend the ACA to throw people with pre-existing conditions into death Pools!

    • Kitten says:

I can’t wait till these asshats have to go home for Spring break and deal with their angry constituents. They want to get rid of one of the most popular aspects of the ACA to appeal to the Freedom Caucus. Yeah you do that, you shitbags, and see how that goes over.

  17. TheOtherOne says:

Bradd Jaffy (NBC News writer) has the receipts – Nunes is being investigated for LEAKING classified information. Bahahahahahaha. Bravo, Universe, Bravo. Let me go make another cup of tea.

  18. fearfactor says:

I met Devin Nunes once a long time ago, when he was just elected to office as a congressman in CA. He was terrible, rude and dismissive back then, I can only imagine what he is like now.

  19. I'mScaredAsHell says:

May there be many more to follow in Nunez footsteps. These Trump stools should realize doing Trump’s dirty work only benefits Trump. He doesn’t give a damn about anyone other than himself and he will throw anyone under the 🚂 to save himself. They are all just collateral damage.

  20. robyn says:

It’s about time, Nunes, the tiniest of cogs in Trump’s horror/clown show stepped down from Russian investigations.

Trump seemed to lie while standing beside the King or Jordan to say he just now discovered that children were dying in Syria in the more horrible ways. Of course, media and Republicans are applauding his new found empathy, knowing he never tried to help these poor children before and eagerly spoke of keeping them out of America.

In fact, just a short week into office his very own team killed some kids, including an eight year old American girl. Chemicals, bullets or bombs, it is all painful. Trump’s military killed dozens more innocent civilians elsewhere later. But never mind, we’ll forget all that and blame Obama instead. Trump, of course, didn’t mention that Russia was supposedly overseeing the chemicals that killed this most recent round of victims.

    • adastraperaspera says:

Yeah, his statement seemed so clearly to be written by adults who forced him to say it. Change in tone, too, which I hope beyond hope could mean that he is scrambling to keep himself and his grifter family at the table.

  21. Eric says:

    So…Devin Nunes IS Susan Rice!

Got it, Emperor Zero. Thanks! Bigly thanks!

    • Rapunzel says:

Nope… If Rice leaked, she leaked to whistleblow. Nunes just leaked to protect himself and other wrongdoers.

      • Eric says:

Just trying to make a joke about Nunes based on what EZ-D said about Rice committing a crime. As in, everything EZ-D says is the opposite.

  22. Lola Lola says:

When will politicians learn that backing Bigly in his ridiculous temper tantrums that have no basis in reality is not doing your job?? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that politicians are spineless but it continues to disappoint me. That said I’m glad this slime ball is off the intelligence committee. Now if we can only get President Bannon to crawl back into his hole in the ground.

  23. Deeana says:

Think about this: Senators and Congressmen can be re-elected again and again and again. Trump will likely only be there 4 years or less. (I hope to god!)

Obviously, Trump’s performance as presidentis worse than anybody thought it would be. Even the Republicans. But right now, they just want to get as much of their own legislation passed as they can, as quickly as they can. They’re looking at the same information as we are regarding the Russian stuff. And despite the pretending, they’re not blind. The Rebub congress critters are going to have to be very, very careful in supporting Trump because it is looking like his stench is spreading.

And please don’t forget, you can influence your congressional representatives. Call or email them. Be polite, be succinct, and let them know your stance on an issue.
