Kellyanne Conway: ‘Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true’

Kellyanne Conway was suspiciously quiet for weeks. I suspect – but cannot prove – that Emperor Baby Fists was unhappy with her deranged self-promotion and she was told to pipe down and stop trying to steal focus from Bigly’s deranged self-promotion. But then this week Sean Spicer had a spectacular meltdown during the White House briefing and suddenly people were like, “Damn, where’s Kellyanne Conway?” I’m not sure if people really thought Conway would be preferable to Sean Spicer, but I think Spicer’s Holocaust-center moment just reminded people that Conway had been quiet for a few weeks. Thankfully (or not so much), Kellyanne came to Sean Spicer’s rescue on Wednesday. She did a discussion at the Newseum with writer Michael Wolff. It got messy. Not as messy as a Sean Spicer briefing, but still.

Kellyanne Conway spoke at a media forum in Washington on Wednesday, in a rare public appearance for the White House senior adviser who seems to be on TV less and less these days. Conway and her interviewer, USA Today columnist Michael Wolff, touched on a number of topics at the Newseum, blocks away from the White House, where the top communications adviser has presumably been hiding during these tumultuous first days of the Trump administration. Since a couple of major missteps in the initial days of the new administration, Trump’s former campaign manager has taken a major step out of the spotlight.

At one point in the interview, Wolfe asked Conway, a longtime GOP politico, if she takes any of the media criticism personally. Conway acted as if she did not understand the question.

“This coverage of you,” Wolff explained, pointing to The Washing Post’s new slogan. “This ‘democracy dies in darkness.’ Because I am going to tell you, when they say ‘democracy dies in darkness,’ you’re the darkness.”

Conway replied, “I’m not the darkness… It’s like I tell small children. Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true.”

As an example, Conway cited the “Saturday Night Live” skit from earlier this year that lampooned her typical day to the tune of Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine.” Conway drew laughter from the room at one point when she said, unironically, “You can turn on the TV and people literally say things that just aren’t true.”

[From Salon]

“Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true” and “You can turn on the TV and people literally say things that just aren’t true.” Both said without irony or self-awareness. And I don’t care what she says, SHE IS THE DARKNESS.

Kellyanne, I’ve come to accept that if you’re saying it, it isn’t true.

    • Giddy says:

Right. If her lips are moving she’s lying. Or listing alternative facts. She is the darkness!

    • AnneC says:

These people all came onto the campaign in the spring/summer after trump had to fire his Russian stoolie, Manafort. They never thought he was going to win, but figured they’d make some bucks and then write a tell-all about crazy trump campaign. I think everyone was shocked (including trump) when he actually won. Now they are trying to run a White House and are completely incompetent and in way over their pay grade plus having to keep a lying psychotic narcissist happy. Rock and hard place-hope they all go down in flames soon. Then we deal with Pence. Ugh.

  2. Lenn says:

Both of these people will never be fired. Trump has a tactic of creating chaos and controversy around the people working for him, to distract us from all the lousy decisions he is making.

  3. robyn says:

Kellyanne look in the mirror without seeking an alternative fact to make yourself credible. You’re supporting a narsissistic compulsive liar and a bully.

    • Madailein says:

Kellyanne herself is a narcissistic compulsive liar and a bully. Also an enormous self promoter–same as Trump. I doubt she’d be alarmed to notice her similarities to him. She’s a truly horrible woman.

  4. naomipaige says:

This woman is a complete and utter moron!!! It’s scary that she’s walking around unsupervised

  5. belle says:

    Oh Really now?

  6. Sasha says:

    Oh the irony.

She speaks to ‘small children’? *shivers*
    Hopefully, that’s just another lie.

  7. Megan says:

This may be the first truthful thing she has ever said.

  8. Jilly says:

I’m still shocked about what this shi**y world can bring us.
I can’t believe this is what represents our nation.

    • Lady D says:

Good point. Still hard accepting reality.

    • Tate says:

@jilly I am still shocked and saddened too. I am currently out of the country and I cringe inside (probably outwardly too) when someone asks where I am from. I know the majority did not vote for him but he is the president now and he is the face of America. This is WAY worse than when GWB was prez.

      • jwoolman says:

Say you’re from Canada. Figure out which Canadian area will match your accent. Start reading a Canadian paper online to be able to toss in Canadian items to corroborate your story….

US citizens have been masquerading as Canadians abroad for many years! Consider claiming Canadian citizenship as aspirational rather than an outright lie. Wouldn’t anybody like to be a Canadian? They even have a pretty flag and a reasonably non-belligerent national anthem.

  9. third ginger says:

Satire is a great weapon against such people. It will not get them out of power, but this group [fearless leader included] does seem to be stung by the truths that comedy can reveal.

  10. SusanneToo says:

    Aaawwww, kellyanne, aren’t you cute!

  11. Heat says:

She reminds me of those people who still insist that the world is flat…or that the earth was created 2000 years ago, and evolution doesn’t exist. Only, instead of manipulating the Bible into some strange fairy-tale, she touts the ‘teachings’ of her creator from his book: “The Art of the Deal”.

  12. INeedANap says:

I don’t know if she believes what she’s saying or is just trying to survive in the mess she made.

I think Kris passed her title of Lucifer’s Homegirl to this chick.

  13. Eric says:

Nice to hear from the Dark One again.

    Alternative facts!

  14. Embee says:

    We know, Kellyanne. We know.

  15. Veronica says:

“You’re the darkness.” Damn, that is savage. And all she could come back with was a condescending and cliche joke about journalists being children. Probably one of the only satisfying things I’ve seen all week.

  16. holly hobby says:

And she says it with a straight face! How does she do that?

  17. Jilly says:

She can’t answer one question with a straight answer. It’s always about the praise work Trump has done.
I made the horrific mistake of watching people interview Trump and I just sat there. The supporters are getting what they asked for but they supported him because “well, if it doesn’t happen to my family” blah blah blah. Everything they’re against Trump is for but they didn’t want Hillary because she’s a “bitch” a “a woman” and because of her husband Bill’s past mistakes.
It’s hard to see a positive area in all of this

    • supposedtobeworking says:

I have such pity for the people who have to report on Trump. I could not imagine sitting through a press briefing with him or Spicer without wanting to crawl out of skin

  18. Indiana Joanna says:

The only “fact” Conway wants you to believe is the one that will keep her pathetic career afloat.

  19. Abbess Tansy says:

We know when Darth Conway is lying, ’cause her lips are moving.

  20. robyn says:

Well here’s some current truth for you. The US dropped a never before used 21,000 bomb in Nangarhar, Afghanistan. A bully simplistic child now has the power to destroy the earth and I don’t mean the North Korean crazy guy, I mean Trump. You can bet there will be some earthquakes somewhere as a result of this eventually. I guess if you don’t even believe in climate change you can’t see how dropping such a heavy weight and explosive into the deep ground will destabilize parts of the globe and eventually the entire planet.

    • jwoolman says:

Yes, people keep forgetting that dropping bombs has other impacts on people and the environment. Just the dust kicked up is a concern, since the particles can remain suspended for a long time and travel around the world. In the US, in earlier times we had a Year Without a Summer due to the dust from a volcano eruption far, far away. It reduced the amount of sunlight hitting the planet, which affects vital things like crop growth.

I don’t know if President Tweeter had to sign off on this one, though. The military report I read didn’t mention him. It sounds as though the decision was made by the military command. So it must be covered by general authorization for bombing the hell out of Afghanistan that they’ve had for years. No reports yet of how many civilians were killed or injured, but it’s rare for only the military to suffer the effects of such bombing. The blast can also cause collapse of structures which can kill unarmed people easily.

We’ve been at war continuously since a few years before I was born. I wonder if the wars will ever stop.

    • Lady D says:

Not that it’s a consolation, but that particular bomb detonated 6 feet above the ground for maximum spread. It left a hole 1000 feet wide in the ground.

  21. Beth says:

She’s such a joke. Always telling lies, changing the subject, and looking like a dumbass. I don’t know who’s worse, her or Katrina Pierson. Katrina was hilarious to watch lie and get facts wrong in interviews.
Sorry Kellyanne, you’re wrong. When Trumps people speak, it’s almost always untrue

  22. JM says:

“Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true”
This is what I say to myself almost every time she opens her mouth.

    • jwoolman says:

I predict that the clip of her saying that will be used frequently after every lie she says. Hope it gets used along with President Tweeter’s -no other Trumpies’ announcements and in Tweets after his tweety lies. Also her pic with that as a caption.

Please go back into hiding, dear. You’ve served your purpose. Thanks for the meme!

  23. why? says:

Kellyanne is all to familiar with “just because someone says something, doesn’t make it true” as she gave not one or even 2, but 3 interviews about the Bowling Green Massacre and then tried to cover up her lie by claiming that she misspoke(that’s when the press found 2 other incidents of Kellyanne referring to the massacre that never even happened). Why does the media cater to Trump and his enablers(Kellyanne, Spicer, Trump’s children)? All these people do is lie and they don’t even care that people know that they are lying. When they get caught in one lie they just tell another. I feel like Kelly, Trump, and Spicers interviewers need to have fact checkers sitting next to them.
