Allison Williams in Diane von Furstenberg at the Met Gala: on point?

Allison Williams looks so different as a blonde, right? I think that’s because I just saw Get Out and can’t imagine her as anything but brunette. (Rent that movie if you haven’t seen it yet!) This looks like a weird 40s facsimile of Allison Williams. That said, this black and white Diane von Furstenberg gown is stunning. The color blocking, the pointed bell sleeves, the asymmetric slight peplum and the little ruffle fold at the skirt all combine to make a gorgeous understated dress with thoughtful details. Look at the back this is elegant. Plus it has a little sheen to the fabric.

Emma Roberts was also in DVF, she was one of several women in bright red and the color is just about the only thing I like about this dress. Maybe it’s the wearer, but this is just a boring dress and I really dislike her makeup. Allison’s heavy makeup works somehow but Emma’s just looks clownish and like it was applied with no regard to the color she was wearing. That pink stole isn’t bad, it would be a fun accessory with a better dress.

Alexa Chung was similarly a snooze in a loose fitting DVF polka dot gown with a deep v neck. This would be underwhelming at Cannes. She has the opposite issue to Emma and Allison, Alexa’s makeup looks like she’s going to a day event. Alexander Skarsgard was also at the Met Gala looking hot, but I didn’t see him pose with Alexa. I wonder what’s up with them.

    The first dress is perfect.

  2. tegteg says:

Allison’s makeup looks clownish, IMHO. Love her dress though.

Emma’s lip shade doesn’t suit her dress at all. And Alexa looks like she’s wearing what she ALWAYS wears…. yawn.

    • holly hobby says:

      Yep I hate Allison’s makeup!

      • KBeth says:

I also hate her makeup, way too harsh. Blonde hair is terrible, dress is okay.

    • Anners says:

Her makeup ages her. If I didn’t know better, I’d have put her in her mid-forties (nothing wrong with aging, but she’s not even 30!)

      The dress is beautiful, though.

    • Pandy says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Allison’s dress, but her make up makes her look as old and hard as Madonna. Emma is just such a plain … nothing. Always.

  3. Onerous says:

Allison Williams’ dress was IMO, the best way to go if you didn’t want to go full costume. It was elegant, well fitted, on theme, but still just a dress. She looked great.

Alexa Chung looked like she was going to society wedding – for someone who wears bizarre things with some regularity, I can’t parse her decision to dress like this for a FASHION event. And she and Alex are still together – they stayed together the night before at the Bowery and got ready together. However… for people 2 years into a relationship, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t have posed together. It’s not like it’s a secret.

  4. KatM says:

I did not even recognize Allison Williams. I liked Emma Robert’s dress but I hope that stole is faux fur. I assume it is. Alexa Chung looks kind of out if place but whatever.

  5. Daisy says:

Alexa never wears heavy makeup. I like her look, it may not be with the theme, but she has such great style. And I’m glad the bangs are back.

I love Allison’s dress, but the hair and makeup are awful.

    • Sunglasses Aready says:

Love Alexa dress. It would be great for a garden party but it is not for this event.

  6. Lizzie says:

What is Alexa chung? If she’s supposed to be OMG FASHUN – she should be banned from future galas for not even trying.

  7. HK9 says:

Love Allison’s dress! Alexa needs to put her hair up if she wanted to really show off that dress…the styling is boring.

  8. Conroy says:

I blame DvF for Alexa’s look. She’s an outgoing girl and her sequin tux last year was the standout. She and Alex are still together, there are pics of them leaving the afterparty. Couples aren’t required to pose together for things to be together.

    • ell says:

yeah, i was just gonna write that they never posed together anyway, and they don’t have to. i know people love to hate her, but to me it’s nice to see low key couples.

    • brown says:

Margot Robbie never posed on the Red Carpet with her husband (but he almost always was with her at the party) at any event and it was ok but Alex and Alexa must pose together because if not something is wrong with them. I don’t understend this logic.

  9. Huckle says:

Emma needs to wear the stole and show off the matching lining. I think it’s quite glamourous.

  10. ell says:

allison williams’ dress is very pretty, i just wish she’d choose another shade of blonde because this is very unflattering on her.

  11. margie says:

Allison looks like Dianna Agron in this makeup.

  12. Lucy2 says:

Allison looks like a completely different person! I love the dress. The hair and makeup are a bit much for me, but mostly because it makes her unrecognizable.
    Emma Roberts, ugh.
I like Alexa’s look a lot, but it’s all wrong for this event. I don’t mind her not piling on the makeup though.

  13. Neelyo says:

Alison Williams looks so old here. Maybe that’s why I think her dress would like better on Judith Light.

    • Lexie says:

Right? The makeup really hardens her features. I feel like the face and hair pull the dress out of modern and into madame.

    • chaine says:

My thought too. It’s elegant, but mature elegant. It looks like something you’d see Jane Fonda in.

    • senna says:

I came here for this!! Allison is a lovely young woman. So why does her makeup make her look like she’s 50-something?! It’s way too harsh for her combined with her blonde hair.

I also hate her outfit more every time I look at it. Those horrible pointy draped sleeves with their illusion lining are so WTF. That asymmetrical peplum thing is YAWN. Then there’s a dumb corset thrown over it because layering is tres avant garde, or something. Combined with the septuagenarian earrings and the faint sparkle of the fabric, this whole look screams “rich old lady getting dressed up for dinner on a Carnival cruise.”

  14. Ellie says:

I think one reason Alison looks so different is because she has dropped a ton of weight. Her arms are sinewy twigs now, and there’s a stark difference in her body and face if you watch early seasons of girls. I’m worried for her. I’m sure the pressure of Hollywood plus a father as messy as hers is can’t be easy to deal with.

    • Andrea says:

I agree—she looked healthy in season 1 and 2 of girls. Afterwards, it appeared she started losing weight rapidly.

    • vespernite says:

YES!! Was waiting for someone to notice, but the girl is anorexic….she looks terribly thin. She started looking that way when she was filming Peter Pan Live, which was terrible. She is nepotism gone wrong….Just like GOOP!

  15. Linabear says:

No, Allison’s makeup and hair do not work on her. She looks much better in neutral tones.

Emma on the other hand looks gorgeous. Very beautiful and sexy in kind of a dark and scary way but isn’t that generally her vibe?

    • Mocha says:

She has strong features and does best with bland makeup. Even just red lipstick makes her look harsh but she wants to be “high fashion,” which also explains the size zero status. She is scary looking with the makeup and emaciation but the dress is on point.
Her hubby got scared off by Anna Wintour one year or something and will probably never accompany her to another one.

  16. sun says:

    Alison’s weight loss is frightening

  17. serena says:

Love love love Allison Williams’ dress!

  18. Giddy says:

The blonde just does not show off how beautiful Alison is IMO. Also, is she wearing press-on nails? Weird.

  19. Patty says:

    Yeah. Allison is looking rough.

    • Kay says:

I guess she was going for 40s glam. She could have done that with more natural hair and makeup.

  20. SpareRib says:

Chung and Alex were in a friend of mines shop in London the other day. Seemed very happy together, calling each other by their nicknames and trying on clothes. I often meet Alexa around where I work, shes a ‘friends with friends’ type. A sweet person 🙂

    • Onerous says:

Hm. Really? Alex hasn’t been in London in months, although he and Alexa have been together in other cities more recently.

  21. Nacho_friend says:

Wow Alison’s face looks shrunken and hollow from the weight loss. I hope she isn’t sick.

  22. Kay says:

    I love Alexa Chung’s dress!It looks fun and comfortable😄

  23. matahari says:

Allison is such a classic beauty, I hate this heavy makeup on her and I really don’t like the blonde…maybe she would look better with blonde if she wasn’t wearing such thick make up- she really doesn’t need it. I’m all for trying new looks but this is just a big “oh honey, no”

  24. blonde555 says:

Wow. I thought she WAS diane von frusterberg//however u spell it. She looks old. Not a good look. Go back to dark asap.

  25. bella says:

I didn’t even recognize Allison. Blonde and heavy, heavy makeup make her look like an aging Vegas cocktail waitress! The only look I love, is Emma’s. I love everything about it! Emma for the win. I love mixing of the red and pink! Just gorgeous. Also, I agree with Celebitchy, Alexa does look like she is going to a society wedding.
