Dakota Johnson in Gucci at the Met Gala: goth, glam & gorgeous?

Dakota Johnson turns heads as she leaves her hotel in NYC

Do you guys remember Dakota Johnson’s absolutely awful Gucci gown at the Oscars this year? Go here to remember how bad it was. Gucci dressed her up like a Victorian ghost, and Dakota was easily one of the worst-dressed women on the Oscars red carpet. Skip ahead to last night’s Met Gala, and Dakota went with Gucci again. And you know what? I don’t hate this at all. This is like a glam-pretty take on the Commes des Garcons theme and Dakota manages to look on-theme AND pretty. You know what helps? It helps that her hair isn’t a f–king mess. Also: her Met Gala date was Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. And the reason why Dakota has been wearing so many pieces from Gucci this year is because she’s the face of Gucci’s new fragrance campaign.

Felicity Jones wore Erdem to the Met Gala. She was one of the last ones to walk the carpet too, which was basically like… *insert sad clown noise*. Oh, you were hoping for Beyonce? Here’s Felicity. That’s what it felt like. Which is mean, obviously. Felicity is a really pretty and really talented young woman… and her style kind of sucks. Personally, I kind of think that she doesn’t really care about fashion all that much. Which is probably why she allowed Erdem to dress her up in a costume from the latest Henry James adaptation.

    Felicity always dresses SO boring

    • Sunglasses Aready says:

The colour of Felicity’s dress if fabulous.

      • Pandy says:

It is a beautiful color! I don’t like Dakota’s hair … and not too keen on her dress but it’s not the worst. Her date though … that’s a hot mess.

  2. LAloopsta says:

This is such a great look for Dakota! Loosing the fringe / bangs has done wonders for her.

Felicity on the other hand – blah. Hair should have been up!

  3. Babs says:

I like Dakota’s dress but it overwhelms her.

    • mellie says:

Yes, I wish it didn’t have those two huge rosettes near her face, lose those and I think the dress works.

    • detritus says:

It looks lovely from the side, where you can see contrast with her skin, but from the front its a big no.

    • QQ says:

I like the dress as well just not on her/highlighting her face? I’m not being shady I can’t Dakota but this dress could have been bangers on anyone else? I feel?

      • ichsi says:

It’s not shady when it’s the truth. The dress is alright, but she is just so bland that it gets blander with her in it. This unfortunately is also true about Felicity (who is a far far better actor than Dakota and isn’t bland per se, she just can’t work fancy clothes well). Just imagine Felicity’s dress on someone like Ruth Negga.

  4. A says:

Dakota was one of the few who followed the theme and damn she slayed hard! Everything about her look is so well put together. Felicity’s dress is plain dull.

  5. Lobbit says:

Dakota killed it. Loved this look.

  6. teacakes says:

I can see Dakota Johnson is trying really hard to be a Fashion Girl but it’s unfortunate that she’s so bland, her dresses wear her – she doesn’t have the presence of a young Kiki or even Sienna Miller (people who’d actually make this look memorable).

I actually like what Felicity’s wearing, I know Erdem is hated around these parts but the colour and fit are beautiful on her and she does have a thing for high necks and slightly period-piece looking dresses. I’m chalking this down as one in the ‘good’ column for her.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

I like Erdem but not everyone can wear their designs, often they wear the wearer. Sophie Cumberbatch wears them well.

The dress looks great on Felicity, esp the colour.

I didn’t hate Dakota’s dress but if she’s going to wear a statement dress she needs to up her makeup – its bland, esp with the dress. Her makeup could have been more ‘vampy’.

      • teacakes says:

yeah, Erdem, for all the ‘pretty dress’ rep, is a tricky label to pull off on the red carpet.

And I know some people will moan about how off-theme Felicity is but joke’s on them, since, as mentioned below, Rei Kawakubo loves to use and deconstruct Victoriana elements in her work – so Felicity is actually right on theme here with the Henry James-looking dress even if it’s not in the ‘wear huge avant-garde shapes’ way.

  7. A says:

Why are they holding hands? Aren’t they on a business date, not a date-date?

  8. squeezeo'lime says:

Felicity has the personal charm and charisma of wet toast.

  9. OSTONE says:

Dakota killed it this time! And to me Felicity could be on the worst dressed list.

  10. frankly says:

Dakota’s dress makes me think of a fancy party on Penny Dreadful. So it’s awesome. That whole schtick is my jam.

  11. Esmom says:

Dakota looks really great, although I think she could have used slightly bolder makeup with the dress.

I love everything about Felicity’s look.

    • teacakes says:

Felicity’s dress actually is in keeping with the theme, in an unexpected way – Rei Kawakubo has a major thing for Victorian aesthetics (her AW 2005 collection) even if the instant association in her case is big sculptural shapes.

  12. Elle says:

I loved Dakota’s both this and last year’s look.

  13. Paris says:

    Dakota looks gorgeous! Goth queen!

  14. Nicole says:

The dress seems a little much for Dakota. I feel like she isn’t working it. Which sucks because the RC should have been a wow moment in the dress. It wasn’t.
Felicity doesn’t push the envelope in fashion so I’m not surprised by her look. It’s fine. Nothing wow

    • teacakes says:

Nicole – that’s how I feel too, the dress is gorgeous but Dakota just does not have whatever it takes to truly make it work.

      I like Felicity’s dress though.

  15. Lindy says:

Just commenting to say that I actually love the blue dress that Felicity is wearing. It’s unusual, the color is perfect for spring, and it fits her like a glove.

  16. chaine says:

Dakota’s dress would be fantastic in a different color. Felicity always seems to wear very droopy, sad designs and colors. This is better than some of the other looks she’s worn.

  17. seesittellsit says:

Shocked to find I rather liked both dresses. Johnson’s is one of the few at the Gala to combine over the top-ness with elegance. She’s a bit slight to carry it and it is the kind of dress that does better with a face off a runway, but still, it works. I like Jone’s dress for its peculiar hint of Victorian era style – and it just happens to my fave color in the world.

They’re like bookends, these two dresses, but somehow, against my better judgment – my heart warmed to both of them.

  18. deevia says:

They should switch dresses. Dakota has no business wearing that dress. She has young Amish mom vibe not goth goddess.

  19. jugil1 says:

I can’t believe I’m going to say this but……I actually like Dakota’s styling here. I think the dress, hair & make up were spot on. I’ll probably never utter these words again, but kudos Dakota.

  20. senna says:

I stanned for Dakota’s oscar dress, and I’ll stan again. I LOVE this! This is a dress for a bad, bad princess. The flowers aren’t pretty. They burst out of the fabric and are almost uncanny. They form pointy supervillain shoulders. There’s straps and cleavage and sideboob but somehow it looks fierce, not delicate. I seem to be the only person in the world who consistently loves whatever Dakota is wearing but so be it. I’ll take her over Felicity’s purple victorian whatever any day.

  21. Nibbi says:

i think dakota looks amazing. that dress is fierce and i think she wears it well.

  22. bella says:

Both ladies are gorgeous, but I don’t like either dress. Gucci has never been the same since Tom Ford was the designer, and Erdem is just ugly. The light lilac color is pretty though, and I like Felicity’s hair and makeup.
