Mariah Carey, the biggest diva in the world: ‘I’ve never had a diva moment’

Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Donald Trump, arrives for a private lunch with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the United Nations Heardquarters in New York Cit

Mariah Carey has wrapped on her first Las Vegas residency, #1 to Infinity, and to celebrate that achievement, Mariah did a Vegas-themed editorial with Paper Magazine. The photos are… not good. I mean, Mariah is a beautiful woman who knows her angles. But she also very likely had a “Needs Massive Photoshop Wizardry” clause in her contract. This is not her waist, people! Mariah will also be returning to Vegas this December, when she’ll do another, shorter residency/show called All I Want For Christmas Is You. That show will be Christmas-themed, obviously. You can read Paper’s interview here, and here are some highlights:

Whether she’s having any good moments lately: “I like good moments. There’s often moments that I’m like, ‘This is not a good moment.’ But usually when I’m like, ‘It’s a moment,’ I really mean it in a good way.

Any diva moments: “I’ve never had a diva moment.”

What, no diva moments? “No…Actually, I have had diva moments, and then people can’t handle it. I guess it’s a little intense, because I come from a true diva: My mother is an opera singer. And that’s a real diva, you know — Juilliard diva. And so other people that are like, ‘I’m a diva,’ it’s like, ‘Honey, you don’t know what a diva is, you didn’t grow up with my mom.’ And I mean it as a compliment, or I wouldn’t be the person I am without experiencing that. And so when people hear me say, like, ‘Dahling da da da da’ and talk that way, it’s kinda like I’m channeling my mother. Not that she says ‘dahling’ all the time, but like that voice is… it’s like I inadvertently do it, and I don’t do it to be disrespectful, I just do it and it just happens and it’s like, [in diva voice] ‘I don’t even know why.’ I can’t fight it, no.

The last time she was starstruck: “There’s always people who I admire and when I see them [I get starstruck]. The last time I saw Prince, he came to my dressing room. I had said I wanted to go visit him to say hello because we’ve met before. When he was living we had had lots of conversations, and he helped me through certain moments that were not easy. I don’t want to get too depressing, but I was having a conversation with Prince and then I looked around the room and I noticed that everyone in the room was looking up and staring like they couldn’t believe he was standing there. But I would always be a little bit starstruck [when] I [saw] Michael Jackson as well.

[From Paper]

“I’ve never had a diva moment” is possible the most diva thing that Mariah has ever said. You know why? Because she truly doesn’t believe that she’s being a diva, or that she’s being difficult, or that she’s being a pill. She’s just existing in her Mariah World, making everyone wait on her, expecting the world to revolve around her, and she’s like “diva what, this is just how I live!”

    Snort yeah right 🙄

  2. Beth says:

Give me a freaking break, Mariah. It’s not a secret that she’s a snotty diva. Those are honestly really tacky and ugly pictures

    • lolo86lf says:

      and heavily photoshopped.

      • LAK says:

Photoshop of Mariah’s real body or Mariah’s head photoshopped onto a random body model?

      • I saw someone’s tweet yesterday that said, “Put down the fork and exercise or accept yourself the way you are. Quit the photoshop, that’s not what you look like.”

      • GiBee says:

At this point can you even call it a photoshopped photo of Mariah? I’m 90% sure that’s a composite of Shakira and Beyonce on an entirely separate person’s body.

  3. Clare says:

Has she ever seen an episode of her OWN tv show?

  4. Karen says:

I think she’s hiding behind being literal – diva is an opera term. She doesn’t perform opera.

She’s avoiding how the term had changed to mean difficult female star.

  5. lolo86lf says:

“I never had a diva moment”. That is exactly the point. Divas do not see themselves as being divas. They think it is perfectly normal to expect the rest of us mere mortals to worship them. Mariah thinks she has a birthright to be adored just like a rich spoiled teenager would.

  6. magnoliarose says:

Mariah Carey was destined to be a mess. Tommy Mattola took total advantage her. She didn’t have a happy childhood and was the girl with the bad reputation in high school who was shunned and gossiped about. She still has the need to be thought of as desirable by men at all costs.
I think she broke from reality a long time ago and lives in an alternate world in her mind. The photos are tragic and shopped to death. As far as beauty I don’t think she is a beautiful woman. Her style has always been tacky and now it is worse because she stuffs herself in ill fitting clothes. The dated hair and makeup are just busted.

    • H says:

I agree with the perspective that Mariah lives in her own Mariah World. Back when her first CD came out, I worked with a guy who went to high school with Mariah. The things he said about her were not kind. I blew it off as bs high school rumors then, but who knows. I don’t think she has anyone in her life to keep her grounded in reality. She’s an amazing talent whose losing it because of her ‘diva’ antics.

    • CynicalAnn says:

I would have sympathy for her but she’s not a nice person. !2 years ago we took our kids to Disney World. The Jungle Cruise director told us that Mariah had just been there to film her Christmas special. When she saw a group of disabled kids there to see her she completely freaked out and said they were “gross” and refused to stand next to them. This Disney employee was completely disgusted and was relaying what a witch she was.

      • kaiko says:

seriously, she really said that!? if so, she’s lower than scum in my book. period. i hope the kids didn’t hear her…i mean how horrendous do you have to be to think or worse, SAY that out loud!?!? …horrible inhuman wretched bi$$h. not even gonna click on any more articles about this stank creature.

      • magnoliarose says:

She is not a nice person. She used to make fun of overweight people loudly and she takes joy in humiliating people.
I wish I were shocked about the disabled children and the fact that I’m not is because it is normal for her.

    • GiBee says:

Look at her first album cover – she was gorgeous. Since then it’s been all surgery and refusing to age gracefully. As far as I’m concerned she can weigh whatever the hell she wants, and wear whatever she’d like, but her refusal to acknowledge her weight means she’s constantly stuffed into things that are (and this is being generous) two sizes to small.

    • holly hobby says:

I don’t think Tommy Mottola did a number on her. If anything he cleaned her up and promoted the positives. Let’s be honest in the early years with Mottola you never heard her talk like this and there wasn’t a lot of bad press. They even glossed over how he left his wife and family for her.

One of my friend’s husband is a SFPD officer. He moonlighted as security for her once when she was in Mill Valley to record an album. I believe she was working with Narada Michael Walden at the time (he’s a well known producer that works out of No. CA). My friend’s husband had to accompany to Long’s Drugs late at night. She made him hang back because “she didn’t want him looking at her while she shopped for conditioner.” That’s an exact quote. I think this was near the tail end of the marriage to Mottola. I remember being surprised by the story at that time (well I was still a fan then not much now) but I guess it was true.

Mottola kept the bad press underground and I think he did a good job with that.

      • CynicalAnn says:

Whoa-I’m from Marin originally. I got married in Mill Valley-so it’s so funny to see that referenced here 🙂

      • magnoliarose says:

I disagree. She was only 19, and he was in his late 40s and far more worldly than she was. The power imbalance borders on abusive in this case. He has admitted it was inappropriate and harmful to her. He controlled everything about her.
He was good at promoting her, but then he also urged her to play down her ethnicity specifically that she is multiracial.

It doesn’t excuse her now though.

  7. Naddie says:

I don’t understand how someone can really like this person. I’ll always praise her voice because it is outstanding, but that’s it.

  8. hey-ya says:

…theres a video on YouTube where Mariah goes into the audience & hands out roses…I absolutely love it…let her have her illusions…shes amazing….

  9. Seraphina says:

Well in Mariah’s diva world her behavior is NORMAL. Just like in Duchess Kate’s world her behavior is enabled and she thinks it’s normal. Sad isn’t it????

  10. Don't kill me I am French says:

Many years ago ,a French young and heavily pregnant journalist interviewed her.Mariah was too tendered by this young journalist that they did a longer interview,Carey was absolutely nice with her and she send her some expensive presents for her future baby( twice :after the interview and at the birth) to her office.

  11. naomipaige says:

I don’t get why she’s still relevant. She’s so over in my eyes.

  12. Once back in the 90s she sent back a limo because it didn’t match her dress. This diva attitude isn’t new. She’s always been that way. Now give this woman stuffed lambs and white roses….

  13. Sam Louise says:

She’s like totally inarticulate like. Like wow. 🙂

  14. Michelle says:

Thank you so much for my laugh for the day! ‘I’ve never had a diva moment’…..Hahahahahaha!!!! That is just rich! Those pictures have been photo shopped within an inch of their life. I would love to see her in real life just to see how different she really looks without all of the photo alterations. People ask why she is still relevant. She is relevant because everyone gets a kick out of her behavior and her views of the world. Wouldn’t you love to see her do Running Wild with Bear Grylls??

  15. moo says:

She’s actually correct… she’s never had a diva moment because she’s just ALWAYS a diva.

  16. graymatters says:

I hope she’s easier to understand in person. I love, however, the way she qualified her relationship with Prince. They had “lots of conversations” but only “while he was living.” Now I want to know about the other, perhaps dead, people with whom she converses.

  17. Abby says:

LOL. I think she thinks calling people “dahling” is diva. Not like, everything she does in life.

    Hahahaha. She is something else.

  18. kibbles says:

As someone with a curvy body, and whose weight fluctuates depending on my diet and exercise, I have no problems with Mariah Carey’s weight gain. I’m not one of the haters who thinks she is “fat”. She is nearing 50 and I think she looks great for her age. Her body would look good in more flattering outfits, and her boobs look great too. My issue with her, as I think many others have issue with her as well, is her diva attitude, her ignorance about the way she acts and how she is perceived, and the way she dresses which does nothing for her body type. She would look fine in a magazine without all the Photoshop if she stopped wearing those showgirl outfits made for thin women in their 20s. We also know that she has big tatas, and I’m happy that she’s so proud of them, but it is unnecessary to show them off in every outfit. Maybe she thinks that they distract us from the rest of her body, but it doesn’t. She just looks tacky.

  19. I Choose Me says:

I still think a lot of it is a persona that she puts on when the cameras are rolling. That’s not to say she’s not a diva because she so is. But as far as celebs go, she’s harmless and even though her voice will never be what it was I’m still a huge fan of her talent.
