Rihanna clapped back at when a makeup company came for Fenty: ‘lol still ashy’

Rihanna attends the 'Fenty Beauty' photocall

Rihanna is good at the internet. It is known. She’s great on social media, the perfect blend of funny, silly and serious. She promotes herself and her brand online but it never feels like she only uses social media to hawk her stuff. Rihanna has also been getting some of the best media coverage of her life this month because of the launch of Fenty Beauty. Fenty Beauty has been widely hailed as one of the most inclusive makeup brands of all time. Rihanna clearly had a hand in building the company, and this is her vision for inclusive makeup for everyone, of every race and ethnicity and skin color and skin tone. She’s gone on a global tour to launch Fenty Beauty. But she’s still keeping up with the press.

The makeup brand Make Up For Ever posted an Instagram which threw a little shade on Fenty Beauty. They wrote: “40 shades is nothing new to us -👄- Since 2015, the #ultraHDfoundation released 40 shades for everyone’s unique skin tone understanding the difference between red and yellow undertones. With expertise, time and passion – we shall continue to develop and improve our products for pros, for you, for everyone…” So Rihanna had to say something:

I want “lol still ashy” to be the new “I don’t know her.” What’s going on with that celebrity? “Lol, still ashy.” Why did they break up? “LOL STILL ASHY.” How is it that Rihanna can sit so much shade into so few words? It’s an amazing talent.

Also: Rihanna has been tweeting @ Donald Trump. She’s trying to get him to pay attention to Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, Bigly remains Forever Ashy.

They did this for attention which Rihanna gave them. However, is there makeup good? I don’t recall ever hearing about them. They should have tweeted something nice but neutral like “welcome to the 40 shades club” or something.

    • Nicole says:

I found their foundation doesn’t match my undertone and it was too oily for me. Doesn’t give me that matte finish that I love.
I do use their primer although I’m switching to Becca because again matte finish

    • teacakes says:

I’ve heard talk about their HD powder for years, it’s the stuff celebs put on to soften their makeup iirc? So yeah, not some Johnny-come-lately company coming for Rihanna but they still got owned lol.

      • Nicole says:

I do love their HD powder. They have some good stuff and some not so good. It depends on the person.
        The burn was hilarious though

    • Betsy says:

      Yes, they are very good.

  2. Lilly says:

Ha ha. Love it and, yes, still mad about Fenty and spending too much money on it. I didn’t look, but I heard they deleted her comment. Don’t dish it… I know some may think she shouldn’t have answered either, but I’m good with it. 🙂

  3. Nev says:

    Don’t test Riri

  4. Littlestar says:

Fenty Beauty is cruelty free, I think Makeup Forever tests on animals so yes still ashy.

  5. Veronica says:

Makeup Forever is a really good line for diversity, but why they went for Rihanna thinking it was a good PR move, I’ll never know.

    • Kate says:

I swear every single brand with a half decent shade range started posting pics of it and talking about diversity righy after Fenty dropped. Even the founder of IT Cosmetics tried to join in, despite having an embarrassingly small shade range.

MUFE is the first brand to actually acknowledge their post is a reaction to Fenty, so I kind of respect them for not pretending they just happened to feel like posting a picture of all their foundations, but the wording is bad. It comes across like other brands might as well not have bothered because they’ve already done it (never mind that it took them 31 years before they had that many shades, while Fenty did it from day one).

    • Fiorucci says:

Not the worst move actually it got them attention.

  6. Rainlily says:

That lipstick she wore in the first pic is amazing! I am shook.

  7. Isabel says:

I don’t know if the lighting is wrong but her face looks much more yellow than her arm, which is unfortunate.

  8. Sophia's Side eye says:

I love Rih! “lol. still ashy” is my new favorite thing. LMAO!

I used to buy MUFE. They’re starting to test on animals because they want to sell makeup in China, and in China it’s the law that you have to test on animals. I did not know that before yesterday when they were getting dragged on IG.

Anyway, I won’t buy from them again due to the animal testing, and I’ve already replaced them with Fenty.

  9. teacakes says:

I’m impressed – this line is legit and not just a vanity project cash cow for Rihanna, the way it is for so many other celebs. She could easily have started out with just lipsticks or nail polishes and gone from there, but she started with foundation and that speaks volumes. As does the cruelty-free part (which means she can’t sell Fenty Beauty products in China – that’s pretty amazing, that she put the CF part over the cash).

    • Erica_V says:

I’m not going to give Rihanna too many props for going cruelty-free when she still wears fur all the time. It’s a start but I doubt it’s something she did for conscious reasons – more like $$$ reasons to make her brand stand out.

      • teacakes says:

…she’s not selling fur though, she’s selling cosmetics.

And I literally just said she was giving up the potential of major China cash by not testing on animals (since animal testing is required on products to be sold in China, and Fenty being cruelty-free means they can’t sell there). You seem to have taken the opposite meaning from my comment.

  10. Lynnie says:

Off topic but why would China mandate the whole test on animals thing for makeup? I can see allowing it, but making it mandatory?

    • Anastasia says:

It’s just one of their laws. Which is why I won’t buy any makeup or personal products that are sold in China. Cruelty-free all the way!

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

China’s attitude towards animals is so awful – I really want to believe it’s just a stupid law, which regular Chinese people do not agree with and that that horrible Yulin festival is just for a handful of psychopaths, but I’ve had many bad experiences. I meet lots and lots of Chinese people at work (I run an Asian program at a medical university) and I know maybe 2, who treat animals as more than food. That’s just the way they were thaught from an early childhood. A month ago I took a group of students for a few days trip to get to know Polish culture and I’m still horrified by the experience – they laughed when we saw a body of a dog killed by a car, when we were in the zoo all they talked about was how they would cook animals we’d seen, they said that pigeons have too much freedom in Europe – they would just eat some and kill the rest and two girls kicked a tiny dog who wanted them to pet him and I had to try very hard not to kick them back.

It’s really hard to stay respectful of other cultures when animal cruelty (or child cruelty like with Chinese gymnasts) is involved. I think the same about Spanish corridas.

Trump will keep ignoring the crisis situation in Puerto Rico until the people there put on the Star-Spangled Banner and drop a knee! 😉

    she’s right….

earlier this month…. Nars posted 40 shades….. or something to that effect

as a black woman who supports black businesses (esp black female) i jumped right into dem comments lol and said YAL SHOOK. KEEP STICKING TO ALABASTER IVORY SAND AND 1 FOR MOCHA, YAL TRIED IT

  13. Lauren says:

MUFE runs grey on me even buying the right undertone. I look casket ready and it creases within an hour of application so yeah Riri’s right.
