Jackie Chan: I can dance, I can sing, I could be in musicals

Jackie Chan is back on the big screen in the action thriller The Foreigner, his first English-language release since the 2010 reboot of The Karate Kid. With this new role he’s taken a radical departure from the action-comedy roles he’s played in the Rush Hour and Shanghai series. From what he’s told the press lately, he really wants to spread his wings even more and treat us with a little song and dance.

In The Foreigner Jackie plays a father seeking justice after his daughter is killed in an IRA bombing in London (a/k/a the Chinese counterpart to Liam Neson’s character in Taken…and pretty much every movie he’s made since then). The film has become a minor worldwide hit, earning around $13 million over the weekend on a $35 million budget. Jackie was eager to take on a more serious role, telling Peter Travers “I try so hard looking for this kind of role because I always do [this for] so many years, action comedy, action comedy. I just wanted to do something different. I wanted to do like Robert DeNiro, like ‘Meet the Parents,’ all kinds of role[s], not only action-comedy.”

And when Jackie says he wants to take on “all kinds of roles” he’s not kidding. In an interview with People Chica, he said “Doing comedy for so many years, I just want to do something different. When I look at other American movies like Taken, it’s like ‘Wow, those kinds of movies are suitable for me,’ as well as some others like La La Land. I can dance, I can sing. If Pierce could do it, I think I could do Mamma Mia! too.” He added, “I want to prove I’m a real actor. I’m not [just] an action star. If a director hires me to do a slow-motion [movie], singing a song, I’d like it!”

Before you go thinking that Jackie is just talking crazy, the guy has pipes. He’s released a number of albums and has sang a lot of the theme songs for his own movies – and he’s got quite a nice voice. Here’s a quick example of his vocal stylings:

Hmm? Pretty good, right? He’s certainly much better than his Foreigner co-star, Pierce Brosnan, who mutilated an ABBA classic in Mamma Mia. I’d give Jackie a chance to showcase his musical ability. And, with all of the acrobatics he’s employed in all of his elaborate fight scenes, is there any doubt that he couldn’t dance as well?

A big screen musical isn’t the only thing on Jackie’s Hollywood bucket list, the 63-year-old actor, who won a honorary lifetime achievement Oscar at the Governors Awards last year, still wants to add a Best Actor Oscar to his collection, as he told The Hollywood Reporter:

“Right now, for me, it’s not about box office. What’s more important is the audience. I’ve been working so hard for all these years in the film business. I wanted to prove that I’m a good stunt man, I’m a good stunt coordinator, I’m a good director, I’m a good producer, that I can write. Now, I want them to say, “That Jackie, he is a good actor.” After I got a life achievement Oscar, I want to get — I hope one day to get — a best actor Oscar.”

All I have to say here is dream big, Jackie.

I love him and I hear he’s such a nice guy

  2. KLO says:

Well go on then? Why arent you in a musical already?

  3. KLO says:

Oh come on Corey, Mamma Mia is so cringe but its a total classic. It is so bad its good.

    • Faye says:

Everyone ragged on Pierce Brianna but I didn’t have any issue with him. I don’t think he was technically bad, that’s just how his voice is. Colin Firth was easily the worst for me.

    • Caly says:

I love Mama Mia. It’s a mess! Lol

  4. Anna says:

He can probably dance but sing… oh no.

  5. Felicia says:

Thank you so much for something that is not a depressing piece of gossip. Or news.

Jackie should do Carpool Karaoke so the US audience gets to hear him sing!

Who wants to give suggestions about who else should be in that car? I wonder if Dolph can sing? 🙂

Or do a music video like Weapons Of Choice with Christopher Walken, before anyone knew he could dance 🙂

  6. frisbee says:

Bless, in a miserable world I’d pay to see Jackie Chan strut his stuff 😂

  7. Div says:

The Foreigner is actually really good (I’m aware the American reviews are mixed but the international reviews were stronger)… I think people assumed it was just a B film like Taken, but it definitely has more emotional weight. I was happy to see it already made something like 85 mil overseas on a 30 mil budget. I feel like he might get a Golden Globes nom (since they have 5 noms for Best Actor in a Comedy and 5 for Best Actor in a Drama) if the studio plays its cards right…

    • Eliza says:

The movie had like zero press or promotion. But my husband saw the trailer and we all went this weekend.

It was actually good. And he was really good on the emotional scenes. It was hard to watch him mourn.

And it proves you don’t need $200mil for an action movie; I had no idea watching it was “only” $35mil budget.

Lol at name checking Pierce, as they both worked on this film together, I think it was just some friendly ribbing.

  8. CoffeePot says:

Whatever, dude. I used to idolize the guy. I used to actually admire his rags to riches tale, his discipline, and his intellect.

But then I found out he was a little CCP lapdog, and a hypocrite to boot.

    • Nic919 says:

And apparently he is a part of the casting couch scene, especially in the Hong Kong film industry. So not much different than Weinstein.

    • Faye says:

I thought he had disowned one son and one daughter, though I don’t know how many children he has. Admittedly, I don’t want 2017 to ruin Jackie Chan for me too, but it seems like it’s in the cards.

      • holly hobby says:

Yep that’s true. I wrote a long post above detailing what was reported in the HK press but that got deleted? Anyway it is not conjecture but a known fact in the press.

He is married to famed Taiwanese actress Joan Lin. They have a son named Jaycee Chan. For years he denied their existence while fooling around with other actresses. He conveniently trotted them out after he knocked up a c-list HK actress. She gave birth to a little girl that he refuses to acknowledge or see.

        So yes it’s the truth.

      • KHLBHL says:

One of his daughters is lesbian so I’m pretty sure he disowned her/doesn’t acknowledge her over that, if not for the “illegitimacy”.

      • bikki says:

oh woah, I had no idea!
his image is so “sweet”, how deceptive 🙁

    • Snazzy says:

      No wait what? AHHHHHH

    • holly hobby says:

Well he has connections. How else was he able to get his son’s drug bust sentence shortened? I think Jaycee (the son) was looking at a lot of years in prison for possession of drugs (don’t remember what it was).

He’s a dog and yep there were rumors of him bedding a lot of HK actresses when they were starting out. I detailed the press in an above post. Maggie Cheung and Teresa Teng were some of the conquests that was more or less semi confirmed in the gossip rags.

    • Jackielovernot says:

      “little CCP lapdog” – BINGO.

  9. Aang says:

I love his movies. Rumble in the Bronx had me in stitches the first time I saw it. I’m also a communist in ideology if not in practice so I can’t hold that against him. If I only saw movies with stars, producers, and distributors that were completely vetted and cleared of any sketchy behavior, I’d never see another film. I saw Marshall this weekend instead. But The Foreigner is on my list.

    • Jackielovernot says:

China isn’t really communist anymore. They’ve wholeheartedly embraced the capitalism in authoritarian capitalism.

  10. VC says:

    Aw! Love him!

  11. Tx_mom says:

Lol, my kids hand-selected him as the best possible step-dad candidate!

  12. Whatever Gurl says:

Yes, he refuses to acknowledge a daughter born to his girlfriend while still married to his wife. This daughter is open as a lesbian and discusses her father’s refusal to accept her.
You can tell from her Instagram that it hurts her.

  13. adastraperaspera says:

I’ve always been amazed at his stunt talents, but it’s public knowledge that he is no defender of democracy–he toes the PRC line and criticizes Hong Kong severely. At the beginning of his song clip, I wondered how long it would take before the stage filled up with major drama. When I lived in China I saw so many variety shows, and no matter if they were amateur or professional, they always have the same “big bang” productions in every number. And then the fireworks showed up! So hoky, but I got a kick out of it.

  14. StillTotalled says:

    Ninjago is in English.

  15. Jackielovernot says:

I’m Taiwanese. Jackie Chan has a nice, wholesome guy image in the West/HW but he’s an outspoken critic of democracy in Taiwan and should be called out for it. And just saw adastraperaspera’s post. Thank you for posting about his awful propaganda pr work against the HK democracy movement! This guy gets super vicious when talking to Chinese-speaking media about any democracy movements in the Chinese-speaking world. It’s like Jekyll and Hyde.

  16. cs says:

Hollywood absolutely wasted Jackie Chan’s talent. If you watch his Chinese/HK films, he has a LOT more range than action-comedy, and played a lot of serious, iconic roles over the years. I’m surprised he’s even back in the scene, considering he gets much better roles in the Chinese market.

But whichever production company hired him for this is going to make bank. A lot of the Asian markets will turn up for this film, since Jackie Chan is acting in it.

(But yes, it’s a well known fact in Asia that he’s a dog who’s slept around a lot and still refuses to acknowledge his daughter [she looks SO MUCH like him, ugh]. I hope it’s not on a Weinstein-ian level, but after the past week I’m not clinging on to that hope.)
